Kathak

The Kathak is an Indian dance. It’s the most popular dance in northern India and it’s one of the eight forms ofIndian classical dance. Today it contains traces of temple and ritual dances. The Kathak began in old times withprofessional story-tellers who recited or sang stories from mythology with some elements of dance. The footwork is the most important in the Kathak show as well as impressive speed pirouettes ending with poseslike Indian statues. The dancers performed in village squares or in the temple courts to earn money. The traditional costume for girls is long and loose colorful skirts and for men is often to be bare-chested. Music toKathak is normally provided by drums and sitar players. Today the Kathak has regained its popularity after the period of decline during the British empire.
