The tag line MOULDING MASTERMINDS, says it all about Vaidya group of companies. Located in Waluj, industrially buzzing area of Aurangabad, this company has been churning out mouldings for various applications. Founded in the year 1985 by the visionary leader Mr. Ramesh Vaidya, the group has evolved as a leading manufacturer of extensive range of injection moulded plastic components of international quality.

It is an immense task for any company to attain expertise in multifarious area of applications. Vaidya group of companies has gained this unique status through their power of futuristic technology enabling them to produce wide variety of complex components using extensive range of materials.

Their prowess in injection moulding technology is amply demonstrated by the fact that their clientele is drawn from varied application segments such as oral care products, furniture, automotive, packaging, house-hold, luggage, medicare, caps & closures and electricals. In a nutshell, it can be concluded that there is hardly any field of application, where Vaidya group is yet to stamp its mastery. As they cater to food grade and health related products, these moulding operations are carried out in clean room with dust levels controlled below 15 microns.

Association of L&T Plastics Machinery Limited (LTPML) with Vaidya group of companies dates back to beginning of this millennium. That was the time when they wanted to foray into applications which demand precise controls on the machine together with fast responding hydraulics and robust mechanical design. Further, fast cycling was mandatory to

meet high demands of production from their customers. To cap it all, electrical energy was to be used minimally by the machine. LTPML could meet all these exacting requirements with their proven range of machines. The journey from then on for both the companies has been quite progressive with more than 30 machines running at Vaidya Group.

Couple of years back, when low cost machines from overseas started getting dumped in Indian market, Vaidya Group also wanted to experiment with those machines. Not to be disheartened by this move, LTPML came out with the S-Tech range of newly engineered machines. These machines were priced relatively lower but performance far outstripping the imported machines. Vaidya group whole heartedly supported this move by LTPML and swiftly took delivery of 12 nos of S-Tech range machines. Today, they are happy to acknowledge increase in productivity to an extent of 15% and energy savings to an extent of 35% using these machines.

Mr.Ramesh Vaidya, Chairman and Managing Director of Vaidya group of companies says that they have been extremely happy with the machines and services of LTPML from the day one. He was exuberant to make a special mention of Mr.Kailas P, Chief executive of LTPML. To quote his words, “Mr. Kailas is a man of great vision, who pays personal attention to even small details when it comes to meeting the requirements of customers”. No doubt, both of them have high regards for each other and enjoy very cordial relationship.

Mr Vaidya rates service support being rendered by LTPML to international class. He has incidences still fresh in his memory which he is not tired-of to narrate to substantiate his above remark. Being a discerning customer, he is able to differentiate LTPML machines vis-à-vis other machines in areas such as:

• Shot weight consistency• Repeatability of set parameters over extended period of

time• Versatility of applications – equally good both for

engineering and commodity applications• User-friendly page layouts.

It is a known fact that injection moulding machines with Servo Pump, offers considerable energy saving compared to machines having a variable displacement pump. While this technology is fairly contemporary, it is a great boon that it can now be adapted to older machines as well, by the way of retro-fitment of pumps. We present a case study to highlight the benefits.

A De Tech 150T machine fitted with SYDFEE 71cc Variable Displacement Pump (22kW power unit) supplied 3 years back was taken up for retro-fitment with the latest generation of Servo pump. LTPML’s engineers tailor made a pump conversion kit to offer the lowest possible machine down time during the

As a part of L&T Plastics Machinery’s commitment to continuously enhance awareness on latest trends and developments in the plastics industry, it shared a joint video conference connecting Reliance’s polymer business offices across 14 regions of the country in an event organized by Reliance’s southern regional office headed by Mr. TMS Mani, General Manager.

The event was initiated by Mr.Bhaskar Ghosh, Sr Vice President at RIL and carried through by Dr. UK Saroop, Vice President, Development. LTPML’s four member team headed by Mr Girish Handigol, Head-Marketing actively participated in the event and shared their views on the emerging market applications & their experiences in the plastics industry.

There were two detailed presentations made by LTPML, the first one on precision molded components, electric machines, In-mould labeling & thin wall technology by Mr. S.Narayanaswamy, Manager-Exports and the other one on two component/color system and gas assisted moldings by Mr.K.Kumar, Sales Manager-Bangalore. The event also outlined opportunities in polypropylene based packaging and paved way for joint working in specific areas for promoting new applications for mutual benefit.

Mr. TCN.Sairam, Sr Technical Manager, RIL coordinated the whole event to perfection.

retro-fitment, this ensured that the time taken for the changeover be reduced causing minimum down time. The retro-fitment was completed in a span of less than three days and normal production started from the fourth day onwards.Following results make it an interesting observation:

Being a preferred customer of LTPML, Vaidya group enjoys the privilege to seek services of local sales and service team at even odd hours. They are highly satisfied with responsiveness of the team together with support rendered by customer care cell operating from LTPML factory.

The future plan as per Mr.Vaidya portends substantial growth in their requirements. They have chartered out a plan to add a fleet of 8 to 10 machine in the coming months. Needless to mention, LTPML would continue to play an active role in meeting all requirements of injection moulding machines of Vaidya group.

TECHNO SAVVY FEATURES

Active mould safety

With the advancing technology and sophistication, the moulds have become highly expensive and protecting the mould has become one of the main tasks of injection moulding machines. LTPML in its new iCon controller developed a feature perfectly meeting this requirement. With active mould safety, the necessary force for closing the mould is captured with the help of transducers and this can be stored as a master curve.(envelope curve) If a part is in the mould or if the mould becomes more sluggish, then the force required to move the mould increases. This force increase is recognized by the measuring system and if it exceeds the envelope curve and tolerance band, the mould movement is stopped immediately. Hence the moulds can be protected precisely even at high speeds.

Hydraulic UPS

Frequent power break downs are the order of the day. These power break downs cause hardships to all and the plastics industry is no exception to this. In moulding shops considerable amount of time and money is wasted for re-starting the production after the interruption of a semi finished cycle. This is on account of time wasted on cleaning the mould with unfinished plastics component struck in it due to interruption of cycle.

LTPML’s Hydraulic UPS, is a perfect answer to address this issue. Powered by an already charged accumulator with an Electrical UPS for the controls, this devise completes the ongoing cycle in case of power break down. With the application of proportional control valves, the parameters are well controlled and help in achieving the acceptance standards even for the interrupted cycle. This feature is well appreciated in case of PET pre-form moulding and also can be used in other similar applications.

It is beneficial to note that the above unit can be ordered as a retro-fitment kit also. Please contact us with machine serial number - Benny Mathew

Aug 27, 2010 was a day to remember for all at LTPML. That was the day our company zoomed past the invoicing figure of 4000 machines. To mark this momentous occasion, a function was organised inside the factory premises in which customers who were to take delivery of 4000th and 4001st machine, senior personnel of various units of L&T and employees of LTPML took part.

Mr. S. Raghavan, Senior Vice President & IPM OC Head, handed over the 4000th machine to Mr. Quintin Fowler, Managing Director, TCI, in the presence of Mr. N.S. Sivaraman, Vice President, Shipbuilding. In the same function, 4001st machine was also handed over to the domestic customer, Mr. Ashok Goyal, Director, Tenty Group, Kolkata – a leading moulder of writing instruments.

Mr. P. Kailas, Chief Executive and Mr. S. Venkataraman, Vice President, welcomed the gathering followed by keynote address by Mr. S. Raghavan. Mr. N.S. Sivaraman, the first Chief Executive of then JV Company delivered the felicitation address. Both the domestic and international customers spoke on the occasion about their association with LTPML. Mr. I. Venkatesan, Head-Manufacturing, conveyed a vote of thanks. Mr.V.Padmanaba Bhat performed the role of Master of Ceremony.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL UNITS

In Injection Moulding of plastics, the temperature of the mould as well as that of the cylinder and screw, has a significant influence on both the quality of the component produced and the cycle time. Temperature Control Units not only improves the quality and surface finish of the plastic products but also ensures minimal rejections and a quick start of the operation. As the tonnage of injection moulding machine goes higher, there is an increase in the need for faster and higher circulation of water for creating the turbulence to ensure quick heating and cooling of the moulds.

The temperature of the mould influences the following factors: • Surface Quality• Shrinkage• Distortion• Melt flow rate• Cycle time

Moulders try to achieve this by higher melt temperature but higher mould wall temperature control will give better result.Selecting a temperature control unit for Injection Moulding application is governed primarily by material to be processed, weight of the mould, the desired heating – up time, the processing rate, the acceptable temperature drop across the mould and pressure and flow conditions of the mould.

• For mould temperature up to 90 Deg C water can be selected in the absence of significant arguments against its use. Otherwise Oil can also be used as required for the application. Ideal for normal applications and the unit is simple with a open tank system with heating and cooling housed in the tank. ( preferred for Injection Moulding Machines up to 250 T)

• For bigger moulds and temperature up to 140 Deg – 160 Deg C water with flow rates ranging from 200 – 450 lpm and heating capacity from 12 – 36 kW can be selected with a direct cooling temperature control pressurized unit. ( preferred for Higher Tonnage Machines, Rubber Moulding and Extrusion processes )

• For Die Casting applications Temperature up to 200 to 300 Deg C , Oil unit is recommended

Coupling a Direct Cooling Unit for each Injection Moulding Machine to chilled water input from Central Chiller can also lower the operational costs of the Chiller and optimize the operational efficiency. Hence look out for the range of units where we can work together for ensuring maximum productivity.
