Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPE) are the class of copolymers, and are produced by cross-linking Elastic Rubber with
Thermoplastic Material. Thermoplastic Elastomers exhibit stretchibility, resistance to chemicals and high
performance at low and high temperatures. Different types of Thermoplastic Elastomers include Styrenic Block
Copolymers (SBC), Thermoplastic Olefins (TPO), Thermoplastic Polyurethanes (TPU), Thermoplastic Vulcanizate
(TPV), Copolyester Ether Elastomers (COPE) and Others, such as Polyether Block Amide Elastomers, Melt
Processable Rubbers, etc.

Styrenic Block Copolymer (SBC): SBC is a type of TPE with possesses mechanical properties of rubber as well
as processing features of thermoplasts. SBC demonstrates good flexibility at low temperatures, and exhibits
extreme protection against chemicals like acids and bases. Majorly, there are three types of SBCs, namely,
Styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) Block Copolymers, Styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS) Block Copolymers and
Hydrogenated Styrenic Block Copolymers (HSBC).
Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU): TPU is a class of Polyurethane Plastic, and is made up of hard and soft
segments. Hard segment can be either aliphatic or aromatic, while light segment may be either Polyester or
Polyether group. TPU offers great flexibility, transparency and wear & tear resistance from oil and grease.
Thermoplastic Olefins: TPO refers to the blend of a thermoplastic with a filler. TPO is generally a mixture of
Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) with Polypropylene (PP). TPO is easy to process and offers strength,
reduced flexural modulus and seals heat.
Thermoplastic Vulcanizates (TPV): TPV belongs to a special class of TPOs wherein blending of vulcanized
rubber is done with thermoplastic materials. TPV offers properties like good chemical and heat resistance and
UV resistance.
Copolyester Ether Elastomers (COPE): COPE is engineered Thermoplastic Elastomers which performs
extremely well at high temperatures, and is as an excellent candidate for replacement of metals, rubbers, glass,
PVC and other materials.

India Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPE) Market to Cross $900 Million by 2025
According to TechSci Research report, “India Thermoplastic Elastomers Market By Type, By End Use Application, ByLeading State, Competition Forecast & Opportunities, 2011-2025”, the Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPE) market in India isprojected to $900 Million by 2025. TPE is being widely adopted as an environment friendly substitute for PolyvinylChloride (PVC) polymers. Over the last few years, increasing consumption across various applications such as automotive, consumer durables, industrial, medical, footwear, etc., has been instrumental boosting demand for thermoplasticelastomers (TPEs) in India.
During 2011-2015, the production of passenger cars in India grew at a CAGR of 2.67%, while the production of two-wheelers in the country exhibited a CAGR of 5.34% during the same period. Regulatory intervention by environmentalagencies aimed at carbon emission reduction through an increase in fuel efficiency has also made major automotiveOEMs in India to increasingly opt for plastics as a substitute to metals and alloys in automotive components.Consequently, TPE demand has been growing from the country automobile sector over the last five years, and the trendis expected to gain market traction during the forecast period.
India’s consumer durables industry stood at $9.7 billion in 2015 and is projected to reach $20.6 billion by 2020. Apartfrom providing durability and high tensile strength to the finished goods, TPEs provide high chemical resistance, flameretardant properties and protection against ultra violet rays. As a result, thermoplastic elastomers are being increasinglyused in consumer durables industry in India. Medical sector is another major demand generator for thermoplasticelastomers in India. Increasing investments in the country’s healthcare sector is expected to have a positive impact onthermoplastic elastomers market through 2021.
“In India, thermoplastic elastomers consumers are highly price conscious. They prefer to purchase low to moderatequality of TPEs at a reasonable price as compared to high quality TPEs available at premium price. TPE consumers in Indiahave a tendency to neglect the quality and advantages associated with high quality TPEs, and often switch to economicalalternatives, consequently impacting the growth of India thermoplastic elastomers market. However, on account ofanticipated growth in TPE adoption across diverse end user applications, the market is expected to witness continuingexpansion over the next ten years.”, said Mr. Karan Chechi, Research Director with TechSci Research, a research basedglobal management consulting firm.
