Indian Steel & Trade Conference 2018, Metalogic’s flagship event, has been designed to discuss and deliberate on the current global trade-war situation which is threatening the export market of Indian steel and is likely to create a route for diverging the global excess steel into India, virtually turning it into a dumping ground.Indian economy is strengthening itself to secure a near 130 Kg per capita steel consumption in the years to come and simultaneously it is also battling the world’s excess capacity dialogue which often points fingers on India due to its mission of 300 million tons of steel capacity.
Mining, which is the backbone of the Indian Steel industry is currently undergoing a major change. Majority of mines in the most iron ore rich Odisha state are about to expire in next 2 years and in order to avoid a vacuum in production, policies are being shaped to speed up their revival post 2020. Karnataka and Chhattisgarh have limited production capacities of iron ore which have to be augmented while Goa can be revived if better technologies for beneficiation are adopted.
Coal mining is staring at auctions to be their lifeline and washeries to be their support limbs. Import dependency of coking coal can only be reduced if better blocks are opened up and more technically sound washeries are setup at mine heads. Pet coke production has to be speeded up within the country and graphite electrodes and scrap, which are one of the major ingredients in steel making, have to be cultivated domestically.
Overall, the raw material scenario will undergo a radical change in the next 2-3 years and steel industry has to very patiently and carefully monitor the changes to comfort their steel production for the generations to come.
