The passion of flying & the curiosity to know the science behind led to the origin of Aerospace Engineering. Department of Aerospace Engineering IITK ,established in 1964, is a premier teaching and research center today, which has put significant contribution in development of India’s aerospace sector. The department is engaged in engineering science instruction, in-flight laboratory work, aerodynamic testing, indigenous design and fabrication of advanced facilities and instruments. The department specializes in aerodynamics, flight mechanics, propulsion and aerospace structures. It has a unique flight laboratory with four powered aircrafts, four gliders and a 1000 m runway. It also has the National Wind Tunnel Facility to meet the national needs in the areas of aeronautical and non-aeronautical related R&D work. Various other academic institutions and research organizations in India also make use of the department facilities.

• As India aims to become one among the top economies in 21st century through initiatives like Make In India; Indian organizations require significant numbers of intelligent, hard working, technically proficient, and innovative talents, considering the emphasis the country places on Aerospace related technologies. The Aerospace Engineering (AE) department of Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) is well known for its cutting edge research and academic endeavours; thereby capable of supporting any requirements from aerospace organizations of the country . The department continues to work towards supporting the vision of the nation by maintaining an exemplary record of academic contribution for achieving excellence in teaching, research and innovation. The department prides in creating young minds well versed in know-how, do-how, and show how aspects of latest technologies in aerospace engineering.

• Low Speed Aerodynamics

A fully functional facility to conduct wind tunnel experiments for the aerodynamics, propulsion and aero-elastic characterization of fixed, flapping and rotary wing and micro aerial vehicles. Laboratory has following wind tunnels to carry out experimental research in the areas of aerodynamics: Low turbulence tunnel Boundary layer tunnel Twin air 5D tunnel Water tunnel.

Research Areas

Unsteady aerodynamics, High – AOA aerodynamics, Flow control on airfoils, wings and other bodies, Bluff body flows, Wind engineering, Decelerator aerodynamics, Transition.

FR• High Speed Aerodynamics

The High Speed Laboratory of the Aerospace Engineering Dept. of IIT Kanpur is well known for research in the area of Gas Dynamics with the facilities mentioned below.

Supersonic blow-down wind tunnel (225mm x 175mm), High speed jet test facility, Indigenously built Jet Acoustic Chamber, Compressor for air supply which can compress the air to a maximum of about 300 psi.

The lab has also acquired a high-pressure compressor which can deliver compressed air at 2000 psi.

Research Areas

Gas Dynamics - experimental and theoretical investigation, Rarefied flows, Applied Gas Dynamics and High speed jets, Sudden expansion problems, Aero acoustics, Active and passive control of jets and base flows, Supersonic, Transonic and Subsonic aerodynamics.

FR• Computational Aerodynamics and Propulsion Activities

The primary focus is on developing and implementing high fidelity computing methods for various flows, including subsonic, supersonic and hypersonic. The emphasis of research is on developing high accuracy computing methods to aid in bridging the gap between theoretical and computational fluid dynamics and heat transfer.

FR• Propulsion and Combustion ResearchThe Lab is equipped with a continuous combustion unit where heat balance studies, exhaust gas composition, effect of fuel and flame stability test can be performed. Following are the facilities available in lab: Low Speed Cascade Wind Tunnel, 2-Shaft Gas Turbine, Continuous Combustion Unit , Gaseous Fuel Combustion Test Rig, Dump Combustor with Optical Windows.

Research AreasInternal flow control (active & passive), flow diagnostics, Turbo-machinery, thrust vectoring combustion, liquid atomization and spray combustion, electric propulsion.

FR• Structures & Material Characterization LabOver the last few years we have been developing and testing smart structural system engineering structures with integrated sensor, information processing, feedback control and actuating devices. The smart structures experiments have been related to building innovative smart sensors, vibration control and structural health monitoring concepts.

FR• Flight Laboratory The flight laboratory is a unique national facility with three single engine airplanes: Piper Super Cub - a

two seater a/c, Cessna Skylane - a four seater and Piper Saratoga - a six seater. The flight laboratory runs courses in flight testing wherein students participate to collect, analyze and evaluate performance and handling qualities of the airplanes. Such courses are also run for the Aerospace Engineering students of other institutes - IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, PEC Chandigarh and MIT Madras. The flight laboratory also has several gliders and an active gliding centre. The expertises developed here are being shared with various aero agencies to contribute towards research and development in the field of flight testing.

FR• Helicopter ResearchThis focuses on the fundamentals of design, manufacturing and testing of systems. Also sub- systems for a mini-helicopter are developed. Autonomous Mini-Helicopter which while weighing only a few kilograms incorporates most of the functions of a real life helicopter and achieves autonomous flight. Following are the main focus areas: •Design and Development of avionics package (Sensing and actuation, Communication, Navigation, Automatic Flight Control and Ground Control) for autonomous flight of a mini Helicopter.•Flight Testing of autonomous Helicopter and expanding the utility by making the vehicle perform intelligent tasks.•Structural design and development of a mini helicopter, test bed for performance measurements, Control law design and validation
