Businesses

RefiningBorn from the vision of achieving self-reliance in oil refining and marketing for the nation, IndianOil has gathered a luminous legacy of more than 100 years of accumulated experiences in all areas of petroleum refining by taking into its fold, the Digboi Refinery commissioned in 1901.

IndianOil controls 10 of Indias 22 refineries. The group refining capacity is 65.7 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) or 1.30 million barrels per day -the largest share among refining companies in India. It accounts for 31% share of national refining capacity.

The strength of IndianOil springs from its experience of operating the largest number of refineries in India and adapting to a variety of refining processes along the way. The basket of technologies, which are in operation in IndianOil refineries include: Atmospheric/Vacuum Distillation; Distillate FCC/Resid FCC; Hydrocracking; Catalytic Reforming, Hydrogen Generation; Delayed Coking; Lube Processing Units; Visbreaking; Merox Treatment; Hydro-Desulphirisation of Kerosene&Gasoil streams; Sulphur recovery; Dewaxing, Wax Hydro finishing; Coke Calcining, etc.

The Corporation has commissioned several grassroot refineries and modern process units. Procedures for commissioning and start-up of individual units and the refinery have been well laid out and enshrined in various customized operating manuals, which are continually updated.

IndianOil refineries have an ambitious growth plan with an outlay of about Rs. 55,000 crore for capacity augmentation, de-bottlenecking, bottom upgradation and quality upgradation. Major projects under implementation include a 15 MMTPA grassroots refinery at Paradip, Orissa, Naphtha Cracker and Polymer Complex at Panipat, Panipat Refinery expansion from 12 MMTPA to 15 MMTPA, among others.

On the environment front, all IndianOil refineries fully comply with the statutory requirements. Several Clean Development Mechanism projects have also been initiated. To address concerns on safety at the work place, a number of steps were taken during the year, resulting in reduction of the frequency of accidents.

Innovative strategies and knowledge-sharing are the tools available for converting challenges into opportunities for sustained organisational growth. With strategies and plans for several value-added projects in place, IndianOil refineries will continue to play a leading role in the downstream hydrocarbon sector for meeting the rising energy needs of our country.Refineries Digboi Refinery (Upper Assam)

PipelinesIndian Oil Corporation Ltd. operates a network of 11,214 km long crude oil, petroleum product and gas pipelines with a capacity of 77.258 million metric tonnes per annum of oil and 10 million metric standard cubic meter per day of gas. Cross-country pipelines are globally recognised as the safest, cost-effective, energy-efficient and environment-friendly mode for transportation of crude oil and petroleum products.

The operational throughput of pipelines was recorded at 74.20 million metric tonnes during 2013-14. The offshore terminals of IndianOil at Vadinar, Mundra and Paradip have handled 218 tankers including 128 VLCCs during the year. The multi-product pipelines successfully prepared to transport Euro IV grade fuels from refineries to marketing centres maintaining the high quality standards of products during transportation. Beginning with the first batch of Euro-IV MS grade quality fuel to National Capital Region in January, 2010, Euro IV grade quality fuels have been transported through the pipelines from refinery locations to the major metros for supply of these environment friendly products to the consumers as per the new emission norms.

IndianOil completed and commissioned the 290-km long Chennai-Bangalore Pipeline to position the petroleum products from Chennai Petroleum Corporations Manali refinery to Bangalore and surrounding areas in a cost-effective manner. Crude oil feed for the expansion of Panipat refinery to 15 million tonnes was arranged through the augmented Mundra-Panipat Pipeline. The augmentation project was commissioned during the year at a cost of Rs. 165 crore against approved cost of Rs. 205 crore.

Integrated crude oil handling facilities being provided at Paradip involves setting up of a second and third Single Point Mooring (SPM) and concomitant sub-sea pipelines. Crude oil blending application installed at Mundra has been an attractive solution for refineries with the ability to blend different crude types to provide a consistent and optimal feedstock to refinery operations. The online integrated crude oil blender facility is now being implemented at Vadinar crude oil terminal to enable the maximization of yields of higher value products.

Implementation of Paradip-Sambalpur-Raipur-Ranchi Pipeline, branch pipeline from Koyali-Sanganer Pipeline at Viramgam to Kandla will further strengthen the petroleum product delivery in central and western India in the coming years.

Patents filed (since 1972) 499 Patent applications filed in 2012-13 52 Patent applications filed in 2013-14 54 Patent applications filed in 2014-15 (Till 31st August ) 15PetrochemicalsIndia is amongst the fastest growing petrochemicals markets in the world. Taking this into consideration and to enhance its downstream integration, IndianOil is focusing on increasing its presence in the domestic petrochemicals sector besides the overseas markets through systematic expansion of customer base and innovative supply logistics. Petrochemicals have been identified as a prime driver of future growth by IndianOil. The Corporation is envisaging an investment of Rs 30,000 crore in the petrochemicals business in the next few years. These projects will utilise product streams from the existing refineries of IndianOil, thereby achieving better exploitation of the hydrocarbon value chain. Beginning with a low-investment, high-value projects such as Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) and Butene-1 at Gujarat Refinery, Vadodara, IndianOil has set up a world-scale Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) plant at Gujarat Refinery and an integrated Paraxylene/Purified Terephthalic Acid (PX/PTA) plant at Panipat. A Naphtha Cracker complex with downstream polymer units is also in operation at Panipat. These initiatives are designed to catapult IndianOil among the top three petrochemicals players in Southeast Asia in the long term. In order to penetrate the petrochemicals market effectively, a separate Strategic Business Unit (SBU) has been created in IndianOil for marketing of petrochemicals. This SBU has five exclusive sub-groups, classified product wise (LAB, PTA, Polymers) and function wise (Logistics & Exports), in addition to regional/field set-ups to offer reliable customer service. This SBU has already established IndianOil's LAB business both in India and abroad. Today, IndianOil is a major supplier to the key players in the detergent industry, both national and international. Similarly, in PTA business, all major domestic customers are catered to by IndianOil. A robust logistics model has been the key to IndianOil's success story and facilities have been put in place for seamless product dispatches to customers by rail, road and sea.

Mega Plants:

Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) plant, Gujarat Refinery:

IndianOil made its big-ticket entry into petrochemicals with the commissioning of the country's largest Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) plant at Gujarat Refinery in August 2004. It is also the largest grassroots single train Kerosene-to-LAB unit in the world, with an installed capacity of 1,20,000 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA). Currently, two grades of LAB high molecular weight and low molecular weight are being produced for manufacture of environment friendly biodegradable detergents. The quality of the LAB produced here has found wide acceptance in the domestic and overseas markets.

Built at a cost of Rs. 1,248 crore and commissioned in a record 24 months' time, the plant produces superior quality LAB for manufacturing environment-friendly biodegradable detergents. The key raw materials for the plant, catering to domestic as well as export market requirements meeting the latest and most stringent quality standards, are Kerosene and Benzene produced at Koyali Refinery.

The LAB unit at Gujarat Refinery achieved 102.8% capacity utilization during the year 2009-2010. LAB sales touched 126 TMT including export of 19 TMT to 19 countries during the year 2009-10.

Paraxylene/Purified Terephthalic Acid (PX/PTA), Panipat:

The most technologically advanced plant in the country, the PX/PTA plant marks IndianOil's major step towards forward integration in the hydrocarbon value chain by manufacturing Paraxylene (PX) from captive Naphtha and thereafter, converting it into Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA). The integrated Paraxylene/Purified Terephthallic Acid (PX/PTA) complex was built at a cost of Rs. 5,104 crore within the Panipat Refinery in Haryana.

The PTA Plant is the single largest unit in India with a world-scale capacity of 5,53,000 MTPA, achieving economy of scale. The process package for the PTA plant was prepared by erstwhile M/s Dupont, UK (now M/s. Invista) and that of the Paraxylene Unit was prepared by M/s UOP, USA. M/s EIL and M/s Toyo Engineering were the Project Management Consultants (PMC) for executing the PTA and PX respectively.

The Paraxylene plant is designed to process 5,00,000 MTPA of heart-cut Naphtha to produce about 3,60,000 MTPA of PX. Naphtha is sourced from IndianOil's Panipat and Mathura refineries, for which Naphtha splitter units are set up at the respective refineries. The PTA unit produces 5,53,000 MTPA of Purified Terephthalic Acid from Paraxylene. Naphtha Cracker Plant, Panipat: The world-class Naphtha Cracker at Panipat, built at a cost of Rs 14,400 crore, is the largest operating cracker capacity in India. The feed for the unit is sourced internally from IndianOil's Koyali, Panipat and Mathura refineries. The Naphtha Cracker comprises of the following downstream units - Polypropylene (capacity: 600,000 tonnes), High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) (dedicated capacity: 300,000 tonnes) and Linear Low Density Poly Ethylene (LLDPE) (350,000 tonnes Swing unit with HDPE), Mono Ethylene Glycol(MEG) plant (capacity: 325,000 tonnes). The cracker will produce over 800,000 tonnes per annum of ethylene, 600,000 tonnes per annum of Propylene, 125,000 tonnes per annum of Benzene, and other products viz., LPG, Pyrolysis Fuel Oil, components of Gasoline and Diesel. The Polypropylene (PP) unit is designed to produce high quality and high value niche grades including high speed Bi-axially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) (used for food packaging and laminations), high clarity random co-polymers (used for food containers and thin walled products) and super impact co-polymer grades (used for batteries, automobile parts, luggage and heavy duty transport containers). Polyethylene is used for making injection moulded caps, heavy duty crates, containers, bins, textile bobbins, luggage ware, thermoware, storage bins, pressure pipes (for gas and water), small blow-moulded bottles, jerry cans, etc.Natural GasDrawing on its vast experience and carefully nurtured skill sets, IndianOil has made successful forays in diverse areas such as Natural Gas, Petrochemicals, Exploration & Production, Renewable Energy, etc. Over the years, Natural Gas has emerged as the 'fuel of choice' across the world. It is steadily replacing traditional fossil fuels due to its environment friendly characteristics which help in meeting the stipulated automobile emission norms. Natural Gas has significant cost advantages over fuels such as Naphtha and commercial LPG. Demand for Natural Gas in India is primarily driven by the fertiliser and power sectors, which account for almost two-third of the countrys gas consumption. IndianOil has co-promoted Petronet LNG Limited (PLL) for setting up LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) terminals at Dahej & Kochi. IndianOil has marketing rights for 30% quantity of the LNG procured by PLL from RasGas on long term basis at Dahej besides long term contract at Kochi. Demand for Natural gas in India is growing and cannot be met by the current indigenous production. Hence, IndianOil is in the process of sourcing more quantities of LNG to meet the increasing requirements. Within the gas business, City Gas Distribution (CGD) is a rapidly growing segment. Green Gas Ltd., IndianOil's joint venture with GAIL (India) Ltd., is already operational in Agra and Lucknow in the state of Uttar Pradesh and is further expanding to cater to the increased demand in various sectors. In an initiative to expand the CGD network, IndianOil has formed a consortium with M/s Adani Gas Ltd. to develop CGD networks on pan India basis. In Gas Transmission business, IndianOil owns and operates Dadri-Panipat Pipeline. IndianOil has formed a consortium with GSPL and other OMCs to build & operate Gas pipelines across the country. In a major step to increase IndianOils presence in Natural Gas industry, Corporation is currently implementing 5 MMTPA LNG import Terminal at Ennore near Chennai which is targeted for completion during 2015-16. IndianOil is in the process of procuring LNG from world market on long term as well as short term basis for meeting the Internal Consumption at our own Refineries and for Ennore LNG Terminal. IndianOil has the capabilities to supply re-gassified LNG to customers presently located in the Northern and Western regions of India. With the expansion of the pipeline network in Southern region as well as other parts of the country, IndianOil can supply gas to customers located near those pipelines. As a committed supplier, IndianOil is completely responsible for delivery of gas to the customers premises. The transportation services of the company engaged in transportation of gas are hired to ensure deliveries. This model is used world over wherein multiple gas suppliers operate through one transportation system. The LNG at Doorstep initiative involves making LNG available to the customers not connected by gas pipeline. Gas is transported through a cryogenic system, stored in a cryogenic holding tank at the target location and re-gassified on-site through vaporizers for use as fuel. The entire operation being concealed eliminates the possibility of adulteration and pilferage. Introduced in 2007, this initiative has been well received and is attracting more customers located away from the pipelines. IndianOil has in-house capabilities in the manufacturing of Cryogenic equipment at the State of Art facility at Nasik for the last three decades.Major HighlightsTotal sales (RLNG+LNG) of 3.219 MMT in 2013-14R-LNG turnover grew by 37%.IndianOil has recorded a growth of 18.1% in total LNG Sales over the last year.IndianOil is expanding into City Gas Distribution.oIndianOil JV Green Gas Limited granted authorisation for City Gas distribution in Agra and LucknowoIndianOil - Adani consortium is the lowest bidder for Chandigarh & Allahabad in the second round of bidding invited by PNGRBIndianOil is expanding into Gas Transmission business.oIndianOil owns and operates Dadri-Panipat Pipeline,oIndianOil in consortium has won bids for the following pipelines for which LOIs have been issued by PNGRBMallavaram Bhilwara Pipeline (30 MMSCMD),Mehasana - Bhatinda Pipeline (30 MMSCMD),Bhatinda Jammu - Srinagar Pipeline (15 MMSCMD)The initiative of LNG at Door Step has been well established and LNG is being supplied to number of customers not connected by pipeline safely and successfully.Indian Oil is implementing 5 MMTPA Ennore LNG import terminal and it is targeted for completion during 2015-16.InitiativesSustainabilityTowards A Better TomorrowEconomic development alone is no longer viewed as a strategy for poverty reduction and well being of society.
