• ISU lost its top rusher in LeMonte Booker as well as its top all-purpose man and receiver from a year ago in Bob Pugh. No quarterback on the roster in 2018 threw a pass last season in a Sycamore jersey.

• The Sycamore defense was pushed to its limit last season, allowing 45 points per game. That may not be a great indicator of how good ISU’s defense was as the unit was on the field nearly 10 minutes more than its counterparts on average due to a struggling offense. The Sycamore offense managed to put up just 90 points over 11 games and were held scoreless twice. In all, the Sycamores converted just 25 third downs on the year and held the worst third-down conversion rate (25-of-110) in the country.

• Indiana State turned the ball over 29 times a year ago and opponents converted those miscues into 103 points. The Sycamore defense forced 16 turnovers - nine fumbles and seven interceptions - which were converted into 23 points.

• This marks the 114th season of football at Indiana State, which dates back to 1896. The University did not field teams from 1899 to 1900, 1908 or from 1910 to 1919. ISU owns an all-time record of 384-528-23 and is competing for the 33rd consecutive season as a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference. All-time, the Sycamores are 61-156 in MVFC play.

• Continuing in 2017, Indiana State was again one of the most disciplined teams in the country, ranking 15th nationally and second in the MVFC with just 56 total penalties and 24th in penalty yards a game with 47.9. ISU has had four games with five or fewer penalties. Against Illinois State, the Sycamores had just one penalty.

• Indiana State played in front of 99,015 fans at Neyland Stadium against Tennessee in 2017, the largest crowd to ever witness a Sycamore Football game. The previous high was 96,461 at Penn State in 2011.

• The Sycamores have played in two of the five largest college football stadiums in the past seven years. Penn State’s Beaver Stadium (106,572) ranks second behind Michigan’s Michigan Stadium (107,601), and Tennessee’s Neyland Stadium fifth behind Ohio State’s Ohio Stadium (third, 104,944) and Texas A&M’s Kyle Field (fourth, 102,733).

• Making his return to the gridiron after a season ending injury a year ago is redshirt freshman wide receiver Dante Hendrix. Hendrix is one of the top receivers in the history of high school football in the state of Kentucky, ranking eighth in career TD (40), 15th in yards (3,107) and 17th in receptions (171). Hendrix had SportsCenter’s No. 1 play in its daily Top-10 following a diving one-handed catch on Oct. 14, 2016.

• Michael Thomas will start at the No. 2 wide receiver slot for the Sycamores to start the 2018 campaign. Thomas played in all 11 games his freshman season on campus. He finished with eight catches for 86 yards and caught a pair of touchdowns on the season with the first coming on a four-yard gain at Illinois State (9/30) and the second at Missouri State (10/28).

• WR Rontrez Morgan showed his playmaking ability as a true freshman in 2017. Morgan caught seven passes for 114 yards (16.3 yards per catch) with a season long 38-yard reception coming against Southern Illinois. He had three catches of 25 yards or more and averaged 17.9 yards per kick return, racking up 179 yards on nine attempts. • With the graduation of Jacquet McClendon at the tight end position, Zach Larkin will move into the starting role. Larkin, a 6-foot-5 redshirt sophomore, caught eight passes a year ago for 73 yards (9.1 yards per catch). There will be plenty of competition at the position as well with redshirt junior Nakia Grier, and freshmen Tynan Williams and Henry Woodcock.

• The Sycamores brought in several talented offensive linemen in what was Curt Mallory and his staffs first true recruiting class. Leading the charge on the offensive line is Independence CC transfer Isaiah Edwards. Edwards stands at 6-foot-7 and 390 pounds and will start at left guard for the Trees. The Sycamores also added a Kentucky transfer in redshirt senior Tate Leavitt.

• Mason Flechler, Wyatt Wozniak, James Lang, Lex Sowards, Kevin Kcehowski, Max Morgan-Elliot, Frederik Fabricius and Alvin Clemons also return for the Sycamores with experience on the offensive line.

• Redshirt junior Wyatt Wozniak has been the steady hand on the Sycamore offensive line. Wozniak is one of the most experience interior lineman on the roster after seeing game action in five contests in 2016 including three starts. Wozniak is the lone Sycamore on offense that started every game at the center position in 2017.

DEFENSIVE NOTES

• The Sycamore defense returns seven players from last year’s team, including All-MVFC linebackers Jonas Griffith and Katrell Moss. The unit also boasts Second Team Preseason All-MVFC picks in Inoke Moala (DL), Rex Mosley (DL) and Rondell Green (DB). Griffith, Moss and Green each started every game at their respective positions in 2017.

• Griffith has recorded six or more tackles each game this season for the Trees and ranked 19th nationally in tackles.

• Griffith played in 10 games as a redshirt freshman in 2016 and returns as the third-best tackler on ISU’s roster with 37 total tackles last year. Griffith helped lead ISU to a near-upset at No. 14 Youngstown State in 2016, where he led the Sycamores with nine tackles and his first career interception at a crucial juncture in the game.

• LB Katrell Moss owns 9.0 TFL on the season, including 2.5 sacks (10 yards). Moss is second on the team and fifth in the MVFC with 101 tackles including 36 solo tackles. He recorded a career high 20 tackles against SIU last season.

Bonner enters his first season with the Sycamores after transferring from East Mississippi CC where he totaled 67 tackles to help the Lions to a National Championship.

• Junior DB Kaelub Newman earned the second defensive back starting position after recording 32 tackles, two interceptions, eight pass breakups and a sack in 2017 at the College of Dupage.

• Sycamore defensive back Anthony Tucker Jr. came away with his first two career interceptions against the Salukis (Oct. 21, 2017). Tucker became the first Sycamore with two picks in a single game since 2015 when Jameer Thurman did so against Butler.

SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES

• Junior kicker Jerry Nunez saw action in 10 games for the Sycamores in 2017. He was 9-of-14 on field goals and 15-of-17 on PAT. He hit two field goals in the season opener against Eastern Illinois and had two field goals at Liberty and South Dakota. Nunez notched a career long field goal of 48 yards in the season finale at Northern Iowa.

• Nunez led the MVFC and ranked ninth nationally in 2016 with a 15-of-18 mark in field goals last season. For his efforts, Nunez earned Second-Team All-MVFC and MVFC All-Newcomer honors in 2016, and this fall was just honored as the Preseason All-MVFC selection for kicker. In 2016, Nunez was one of nine kickers in the nation to start the season 7-for-7 in field goals. His 83.3 percentage in field goals in 2016 tied a school record set by Tanner Fritschle in 2012, who also hit 15 field goals on 18 attempts.

• Indiana State brings in a new punter in Travis Reiner with the graduation of Thomas Bouldin. Reiner comes to ISU as a redshirt sophomore from College of the Canyons in California where he earned Second Team All-Conference honors in 2017 after averaging 43.1 yards per punt. He pinned the opponent inside the 20-yard line 21 times and finished with a long punt of 64 yards.

OTHER NOTES

• Indiana State has signed two players from the Netflix series “Last Chance U” in OL Isaiah Edwards (Independence CC) and DB Denzel Bonner (East Mississippi CC).

HEAD COACH CURT MALLORY

Curt Mallory enters his second season at the helm of the Sycamore football program after being named the 21st head coach in the history of Indiana State on Jan. 23, 2017. “Curt Mallory is a grinder who has coaching in his DNA,” Director of Athletics Sherard Clinkscales said. “His dedication to developing young men into leaders on the field and in life has been a core piece of his coaching philosophy throughout his career. He will raise the competitive bar and hold all accountable to that end. He is the right person ¬at the right time to lead this program into becoming a nationally recognized school. I am excited to welcome Curt, his wife, Lori, and his three children into the Sycamore family.” Mallory, a 22-year veteran as an assistant coach in the college ranks, is part of one of the more prominent football families in the United States, as he is the son of Indiana University’s all-time winningest head coach Bill Mallory, who coached the Hoosiers from 1984-96. Bill Mallory was also the head coach at Miami of Ohio (1969-73), Colorado (1974-78) and Northern Illinois (1980-83) over an illustrious 27-year coaching career. Mallory also has two brothers in the NFL coaching ranks: Doug, the defensive backs coach for the Atlanta Falcons, and Mike, a special teams coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars. “I’m extremely excited to be coming back home to the state of Indiana to become part of the Indiana State University family,” Mallory said. “I would like to thank President Dan Bradley, Sherard Clinkscales and the whole administration at Indiana State for this great honor. This University and the city of Terre Haute are very intriguing to me as a coach, as there is a lot of potential to build a strong football program here. Most of all, it feels amazing to be back in this great state again and work alongside all the wonderful people I know throughout the state.”

In Mallory’s first season in Terre Haute, the Sycamores finished 0-11 overall and 0-8 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference with seven games coming against nationally ranked foes. He coached five All-MVFC players in 2017 including linebacker Jonas Griffith and tight end Jacquet McClendon who were tabbed to the Second Team while running back LeMonte Booker, punter Thomas Bouldin and linebacker Katrell Moss were named Honorable Mention. Prior to coming to Indiana State, Mallory was the pass coordinator and secondary coach under former North Dakota State head coach Craig Bohl at the University of Wyoming in 2015 and 2016. There, Mallory mentored 2016 Thorpe

Award semifinalist Andrew Wingard, who was a First-Team All-Conference honoree as a sophomore. The previous year in 2015, Mallory helped Wingard and Marcus Epps to nods as Honorable Mention All-Americans.Mallory spent the previous four seasons at his alma mater, the University of Michigan, as a secondary coach under Brady Hoke. There, he worked with several superb defenses, including the seventh-best in the FBS his final year in 2014 that only allowed 311.3 YPG. That same year, Michigan ranked 15th in rushing defense (117.7 YPG), tied for 19th in passing defense (193.7 YPG) and 27th in scoring defense (22.4 PPG). The Wolverine secondary also finished top-15 in the nation in pass defense in both 2011 and 2012. The 2011 defense was an especially impressive feat that first season, as they jumped from 107th in scoring defense in 2010 to sixth nationally in 2011. In Ann Arbor, Mallory had the opportunity to coach current Jacksonville Jaguars safety Jarrod Wilson, as well as help recruit and coach 2016 Heisman Trophy finalist and projected top 2017 NFL Draft pick Jabrill Peppers during his freshman season in 2014. Mallory was the defensive coordinator at Akron for the 2010 season, and before that he spent five successful seasons at the University of Illinois from 2005-09 under head coach Ron Zook (now the special teams coordinator of the Green Bay Packers). Mallory’s first two seasons in 2005 and 2006 were spent as the secondary coach, and his final three years he was promoted to co-defensive coordinator. At Illinois, Mallory was instrumental in one of the best teams in Illini history in the 2007 Rose Bowl team. That year, Mallory’s Illini defense held opponents to under 20 points per game en route to a 9-4 finish. Illinois also ranked second in the Big Ten in passing defense (182.2 YPG) in 2006 and led the Big Ten in sacks and tackles for loss in 2008. Mallory’s 2006 secondary only allowed 11 passing touchdowns and 6.5 yards per pass attempt all season. At Illinois, Mallory’s prized pupil was All-American Vontae Davis, who was a two-time Thorpe Award semifinalist and a 2009 First-Round NFL Draft Pick of the Miami Dolphins. Davis has been a two-time Pro Bowl selection during his NFL career and has been a member of the Indianapolis Colts since 2012. Other notable pupils at Illinois include current Detroit Lions safety Tavon Wilson, a 2012 Second Round pick of the New

England Patriots and a member of New England’s Super Bowl XLIX champion team, and Jeremy “J” Leman, a 2007 All-American linebacker for the Illini Rose Bowl team and current Big Ten Network color analyst. Mallory spent the previous three seasons at Indiana as a secondary coach from 2002-04, which was preceded by one year as the secondary coach at Central Michigan in 2001 and six seasons at Ball State from 1995-2000 in charge of both the linebackers and secondary. Mallory was on staff for Ball State’s 1996 team that went to the Las Vegas Bowl. His coaching career began as a student assistant at Michigan in 1992, followed by two years as a graduate assistant under his father at Indiana in 1993-94. Mallory was a four-year player at the University of Michigan from 1988-91 under legendary head coach Bo Schembechler his first two seasons, followed by Gary Moeller his last two. Mallory was on four Wolverine teams that won a Big Ten title, including three teams that went to a Rose Bowl. Mallory capped off his Wolverine career with an interception in Michigan’s 35-3 win over Ole Miss in the 1991 Gator Bowl. Longtime Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr, who led the Wolverines to a national title in 1997, was Mallory’s defensive coordinator during his playing career. Mallory earned his bachelor’s in sport management and communication from the University of Michigan in 1992, and he finished his master’s in outdoor recreation at Indiana University in 1999. WHAT THEY'RE SAYING ABOUT CURT MALLORY

Craig BohlWyoming Head Coach (2014-Present)Former North Dakota State Head Coach (2003-13)“We want to congratulate Curt and his wife Lori as they open a new chapter in their lives and in Curt’s coaching career as he becomes the head coach at Indiana State. Curt’s efforts in his two years at Wyoming were greatly appreciated and had a significant impact on our program as we benefitted both from his coaching and his recruiting abilities. Curt is a well-experienced coach, who has a great understanding of players from the Midwest. He’ll be a great fit at Indiana State, and he will make them competitive in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.” Lloyd CarrFormer Michigan Head Coach (1995-2007)“Curt Mallory is an outstanding choice as head football coach at Indiana State University. He is a man of integrity who will be a great representative of the University and a coach who will be a great role model for his players. ISU will be successful on and off the field of play.” Gerry DiNardoBig Ten Network AnalystFormer Vanderbilt Head Coach (1991-94)Former LSU Head Coach (1995-99)Former Indiana Head Coach (2002-04)“From the first time I met and worked with Curt it was clear he was destined to be a head coach. His character, knowl-edge, passion and love for the game make him a very spe-cial coach. Often times when picking a head coach people always talk about ‘the fit.’ Well, Indiana State got the perfect fit in Curt Mallory. I’d also like to congratulate the Indiana high school coaches because one of your own is coming back.” Don FischerRadio Voice of the Indiana Hoosiers“The Mallory family is one of the great football families in all of the United States. I don’t know of any family more involved in the sport throughout their whole lives. All the Mallory boys not only played but have coached the game and are still coaching at a high level. Bill is still the best coach in Indiana University history. His 13 years here we went to six bowl games, and IU hasn’t come close since and didn’t go again until 2007; the struggle has been mighty since then. We’ve had a couple of other great football fam-ilies pass through here, like Terry Hoeppner and Bill Lynch, whose families are as engrossed as the Mallorys. Without a doubt, Bill Mallory is one of the most respected coaches in the country, and he was revered by all of us who worked with him here. His sons are all class people, and I am still very close with Bill, his wife and the entire family. Every time I went to Michigan while Curt was there it was like seeing an old friend. Curt is a terrific person and coach; the people are going to love him at ISU. I’ve watched Indiana State from afar since I worked there because I loved my time at WVOW; I just had a ball in Terre Haute. I still follow ISU closely, and I

still believe it can take off. I’m also very close to Trent Miles, who I think started to turn this program around, and Mike Sanford kept some of that success going too. I know a lit-tle about Indiana State Football and the background of the people that live there, and I’m really excited for Curt and his family for this opportunity.” Brady HokeFormer Michigan Head Coach (2011-14)“Curt Mallory is a man of unbelievable character and in-tegrity. He is a great teacher and role model for the young men that he has had the privilege to coach. The high school coaches in the state of Indiana have a coach at Indiana State that will be passionate about the relationships Curt and his staff will have with them. The University, the alumni, the fans and the players will be proud to have Curt Mallory as their head football coach.” Jordan KovacsSafety, University of Michigan (2008-12)Five-year NFL Veteran2009 Freshman All-AmericanThree-time All-Big Ten“I had the privilege of playing under Coach Mallory for two years at Michigan. He is undoubtedly one of the best guys I’ve come across in the football world. His enthusiasm and passion for the game is unrivaled and is why he’ll make a great head coach. Good luck, Coach Mal!” Jeremy “J” LemanLinebacker, University of Illinois (2003-07)Big Ten Network Analyst2007 All-AmericanFour-year NFL Veteran“Competitor and character; those are the words that come to mind when I think about Curt Mallory. He loves to com-pete at the highest levels and demands the same from his players, yet knows that the foundation of any program is the character and integrity of its staff and players. He will make Indiana State proud on and off the field.” Bill LynchDePauw Head Coach (2013-Present)Former Butler Head Coach (1985-89)Former Ball State Head Coach (1995-2002)Former Indiana Head Coach (2007-10)“Curt Mallory is an outstanding football coach and a tre-mendous leader of young men. His energy and passion for the game of football is contagious. Curt is a proven recruiter and will represent Indiana State University in a first-class manner.” Bill MalloryFather, Former Indiana Head Coach (1984-96)“My wife and I are coming up to the press conference on Wednesday and are very excited for him. Curt had called me to say a job had opened at Indiana State, and I told him I thought it’s a great move for him. I’ve always had great

respect for ISU like Curt does, and he’s very excited to have the opportunity to be the head football coach. We moved to Bloomington when he was in middle school, he played football at Bloomington South, he went onto play at Michi-gan but then came back with me as a graduate assistant, so he has always had a warm sport for the state of Indiana and football. The key, without question, is recruiting the state of Indiana and making it a hub – which he will do. He will do a thorough job of that in the state, as he has great respect for the football in the state and the coaches, and that is so important to getting those players. Curt is a great people person and he cares about his players. He’s not a person up on a pedestal or with an ego. He’s very caring, and I say that with all sincerity. He’s a down-to-earth and caring individu-al with passion for the game. Most important to him are the people involved; it’s like a family to him. I know he’ll make people understand that they’re important, and together they’ll work to make the program succeed. He has a lot of good positives there that will be good for Indiana State. He’s anxious to surround himself with a good quality staff to make this program succeed.” Mike MalloryBrother, Jacksonville Jaguars Special Teams Coach“I’m thrilled for Curt. He is well-prepared to lead the Indiana State Football program. His passion and attention to detail will serve the Sycamores well.” Tavon WilsonSafety, University of Illinois (2008-11)2012 Second Round NFL Draft Pick (New England Patriots, Pick 48)Detroit Lions Safety (2016-Present)New England Patriots Safety (2012-15)Super Bowl XLIX Champion (New England Patriots)“Coach Mallory is so deserving of this opportunity to be-come the next head coach at Indiana State University. Ever since I stepped foot onto campus at the University of Illinois, Coach Mal took me under his wing. He taught me so much about the game of football, and I credit him for believing in me to become a versatile defensive back. He trusted me as a leader at multiple positions, which has been very beneficial throughout my NFL journey. Coach Mal also helped devel-op me into the man I am today. He was my father figure throughout college, and I know that he will be able to help turn ISU into the next great program of young men and stu-dent-athletes.” Ron ZookGreen Bay Packers Special Teams Coordinator (2014-Present)Former Florida Head Coach (2002-04)Former Illinois Head Coach (2005-11)“Curt comes from a great football family. I played for his father, who was a man of integrity. Curt is a great coach, he cares about his players and will be a great ambassador for the University.”
