• Indie Rock is a genre of alternative rock

• It originated in the UK and USA in the 1980’s

• Indie Rock is very diverse with many sub genres

• Originally used to describe record labels and the music they produced

• When punk bands in the USA and Britpop bands in the UK became mainstream the term indie rock was used to identify the bands outside the norm

• Indie rock bands became successful when the internet became more predominate in everyone's life (2000’s)

• The term indie rock derived from independent which describe the low budget record labels

• The term gradually became the term for bands which were outside the norm and not in mainstream success
