Then select and let us do the rest, transforming your desires into your dream holiday or to put it simply, an …. Indus Experience. We particularly welcome you to talk to us, to tell us exactly how you envisage your holiday. On our side, we recommend and advise but, above all, we listen. Air travel is the most efficient way of moving within the region. All the major places of interest and cities have airports within easy reach. The Thai and Vietnam service are particularly well structured: and the other countries rapidly following suit with an increasing choice of carriers and budgets to suit all pockets. Myanmar currently does have a more limited schedule of flights, but with the expansion of tourism, more will soon become available. Flying is the ideal means of transport when time is of the essence. Indus choose the best possible option available at the time of booking for their guests.

B Y R O A D

Driving in the region is an experience in itself. In some places the standard of road is poor and in the monsoon season prone to flooding, however, many new roads are being constructed: connecting all the main towns, cities and places of interest together. Thailand for example

has an excellent network, Myanmar is slowly upgrading, whilst Highway One in Vietnam from Hanoi to the Mekong Delta is virtually a ‘super highway’! Don’t forget there are other forms of transport – ox and buffalo cart rides, Remok (tuk-tuk) fun,’ cyclos’ (rickshaws), elephant safaris and of course – the buses – often fast, loud and manic! All Indus guests have an exclusive private car with a/c, and an experienced English speaking driver, well accustomed to the local road nuances! For small groups all coaches have a/c and knowledgeable driver/guides.

B Y T R A I n

The rail system throughout the countries varies tremendously in style and comfort. In Myanmar it’s old, slow but cheap and a great way to meet the locals – choose between hard or soft benches! Contrast that with the most romantic way of travelling on a train on the fabled Eastern & Oriental Express for a touch of pure luxury or rumble along on Cambodian trains -

still with a few teething troubles after the French built it 100 years ago. But no matter – this is what a holiday is about, meeting wonderful people, passing through glorious countryside, feeling the rhythm of the land.

B Y W A T E R

Water, in the area is a synonym for ‘super highways’. The mighty rivers of the region, the Mekong and Irrawaddy with their countless tributaries have been the main source of internal transportation for generations. Today visitors can take a short cruise through the maze of waterways scattered throughout the region or spend a few days cruising in elegant luxurious cruise boats taking in the sights and sounds of the river bank villages, seeing some of the incredible ancient highlights or simply relax on the observation deck. Other fun water experiences include rafting, long tail power boat and sampan rides. Indus offers an excellent selection of cruises and day excursions for their guest’s enjoyment.

t r a v e l w i t h i n t h e r e g i o nAs with all emerging and developing countries the standard of internal travel can vary tremendously, and Indus endeavours to use the best possible means of travel at each destination. With the advent of tourism Air links have become more widespread as distances to travel can often be vast. Gradually each country is building a network of Local and International carriers and upgrading airports. Roads are often crowded, congested and provide an unforgettable experience! Many tours take to the water and use some of the luxurious river cruisers – whilst occasional trips in sampans add an extra thrill! Trains ply the lands and for Indus guests memorable journeys on the acclaimed Eastern & Oriental Express gives another glimpse into many unseen lands within the region.

I N D O C H I N AIndochina, or Indochine, as it was called by the French Colonists, is a region in Southeast Asia roughly to the east of India and Southwest of China – hence the name – Indochina. Strictly speaking, the title should only apply to Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. However, today Thailand and Burma (Myanmar ) are often included in the region.

For a truly relaxed visit head down to the south of Laos home to many ethnic tribal peoples. Explore the incredible diverse countryside from soaring wild highlands to the Bolaven plateau with its tea and coffee plantations, and the countless Mekong Islands. The small city of pakse is the main focal point of the area.

The main places of interest include the World Heritage site of Wat phu Champassak – a ruined Khmer Temple. The Si phan Don (Four Thousand Islands) area of the Mekong River, with its numerous rapids and waterfalls, including the Khon phapheng Falls. Watch out for sightings of the endangered freshwater dolphins.

Best time to visit: Laotian weather is influenced by the annual Southeast Asian monsoon cycle. The best time for visiting most the country is between november and February/March with cooler temperatures. The monsoon rain is heavy coming in brief bursts. Then the glorious sun shines! If you’re on a cruise november is probably the best time, whilst in January – June water levels are low.

Wandering mists drift slowly across high mountain peaks. The silence of the dawn is broken by the sound of chanting, as Monks leave their morning prayers, and go in search of alms in the towns and villages. Their saffron robes shimmer, in the suns first rays. Mysterious plains are scattered with ancient relics. Mighty rivers, with small isolated villages dotting the banks constantly fight back the verdant jungle, encroaching, on their already fragile ecological existence. Life is slow. Life is traditional. no mad rush here – the Laotians are laid back.

Laos is still unspoilt – a gentle country with an ageless charm, and relatively speaking, still ‘off the beaten track’ of mainstream tourism. However, for many, this lack of sophistication is the attraction of Laos, with the genuine warmth and hospitality of the people.

l a o sLaos is the hidden gem of the region and, after years of unrest and uncertainty, is slowly emerging like a chrysalis from its cocoon - revealing its stunning beauty. It’s a country overflowing with spectacular sights, glorious scenery, mouth-watering food and truly delightful people.

Vientiane (Sandalwood City) is a sprawling old Colonial city, on the banks of the Mekong, with a laid back and almost serene atmosphere. Locals consider it as being ‘mad busy’ in comparison with the other Laotian towns! Originally founded in the 10th C. Vientiane became the capital after the fall of Luang prabang.

Like the rest of the country, its history is turbulent: reflected in the many cultural influences from the Siamese, Burmese, Khmers- more recently the French. Charming French Colonial boulevards and ancient Buddhist Temples blend seamlessly together.

p L A I n O F J A R S

In xieng Khuang province, there lies the mysterious plain of Jars. Myth and legend abound but, as yet, no clue is forth coming as to why these jars, apparently cut from the solid rock 2-3000 years ago, are there. unESCO is sponsoring projects to help unravel the mystery. phonsavan, the capital of the region, is the main tourist centre.

The mountainous area is one of great strategic importance – both commercially and militarily – located close to the Vietnamese boarder. By 1964, the north Vietnamese and pathet Lao had established vast tunnels under the plain of Jars, as part of the Ho Chi Minh trail. Local ethnic tribes live in the remote mountains, including the Thai Dam, phuan and H’mong, the largest minority group in the area: all still follow their traditional ancestral way of life.

until the mid-16th C. Luang prabang was the Royal capital of the country - Lane xang. Today, it retains an air of old world charm and tranquility; graced by its softly faded French Colonial legacy. A myriad of ancient streets, hidden alleyways and over 30 glorious gilded Temples create a medley of culture and history. not surprisingly Luang prabang is a unESCO World Heritage Site. As dawn breaks, a timeless ceremony takes place, when offerings of food are given to the solemn lines of saffron robed Monks, coming forth from their Monasteries, to receive alms from the local people. It’s a moving and very special sight. Luang prabang continues to be the main centre for Buddhist learning in Laos. There are some delightful and fascinating places to visit close to Luang prabang. Take a boat trip along the Mekong to the sacred pak Ou Caves. Set high in the cliffs, they shelter thousands of images of the Buddha, many are gold lacquered and left by pilgrims. Visit a Lu tribal village to see traditional weaving and dyeing, or go for a swim in the crystal waters of the Kuang Si Waterfall (water levels permitting).

Best time to visit: Cambodia experiences its south western monsoon roughly from May/ June until October which brings with it high humidity and temperatures. April sees the start of the monsoon continuing until October, with short, sharp cloudbursts. From november to March temperatures are slightly cooler with little rain. The land of the incomparable Angkor Wat: the crown jewel of ancient Cambodia. A single glance at this monumental structure cannot fail but to take the breath away! Scattered around are other wondrous Temples: many still embraced by the tangle weave of the jungle.

Life is slow and traditional: tribal people live in the far mist strewn mountains of the northwest in dense jungle, whilst stilt and floating villages on Tonle Sap Lake follow the cycle of the seasons. For a faster pace of life visit the capital phnom penh, a delightful riverside city with a French Colonial air.

Remerging after a long and tumultuous past Cambodia is a stunning destination; the people are quietly welcoming - and always smiling. It’s a land to savour and to roam.

c a m b o d i aAs day breaks a rustle stirs the air as a soft breeze awakes the sleeping Temples, breathing the life of a new day into their ancient souls: colours change, moods change and the night slips silently away. Cambodia is a land wreathed in mystery. A land shrouded with secrets still to be discovered.

Kep is a delightful seaside resort (once called Kep-sur-mer by the French) – and is famed for its old Colonial heritage, wonderful seafood (especially the crab) and white sand islands. Sihanoukville or Kompong Som is nicknamed the “Riviera of the East”, with its beautiful white sand beaches, crystal clear water, and delightful bars and restaurants sprinkled along the beaches.

Offshore tiny resort islands, like the romantic Song Saa, offer excellent snorkelling, scuba diving and ocean fishing.

Today, phnom penh, after weathering the ebbs and flows of history, still has a decidedly Colonial atmosphere with boulevards, cafes and now has a vibrant modern air. It’s noisy, alive from dawn to dusk and full of surprises. The rejuvenated waterfront is a haunt of the ‘in crowd’ with al fresco restaurants and bars. Markets are perfect for bartering for hand woven silks, silver and precious stones; ancient monuments sit comfortable side by side with their new neighbours.

The most important places to visit include the Royal palace, home of the Royal family: the Silver pagoda with its floor splendidly covered with 5,000 silver tiles: the recently restored national Museum displaying superb sculptures, Royal barges and palanquins, dance costumes and glorious art ranging from the 6th – 13th C.

Visit Temple sites farther afield including: The Banteay Srei - The Citadel of Women which has the finest pink sandstone carving in Cambodia. The Beng Melea – 11th C. “Lotus pond” Temple built, by Suryavarman II, as a Hindu Temple, hidden in a maze of jungle. See the stunning River of a Thousand Lingas (Kbal Spean) with its intricate Hindu carvings.

The pre- Angkorian Roulos Group are quite fascinating. preah Ko was built with six towers dedicated to the Kings and Queens, who, in death became Gods. Consecrated in 881 AD to Siva, Bakong was the State Temple of Indravarman, and the first ‘Temple Mountain’. The last Lolei, is sadly in a bad state of repair and was once an island Temple.

A n G K O R - T H E B I G T H R E E !

Words truly pale into insignificance when you actually visit these amazing Temples – superlatives mean nothing as you ramble around Angkor, considered the largest religious building in the world, and originally built around the 12th C as a funerary Temple for Suryavarman 11. To truly absorb its stunning beauty visit in the first light of dawn: Angkor has mastered the art of making a grand entrance!

Ta prohm has not been restored and is shrouded in gnarled banyan trees and evocative fallen Temple stones. It is totally indescribable as the first rays of dawn caress the land; as tantalising glimpses of this wonder of man, emerge from its nights slumber.

Each Temple is unique, individual and magical –none more so than the Bayon with 200 giant smiling faces: enigmatic and awe inspiring. The 300 metre long Elephant Terrace with its famous parade of elephants, complete with their Khmer mahouts, is truly magnificent. The Temples have to be seen, touched, explored and to let the memories, hidden in the walls, flood over you. For a truly different perspective take to the skies and view these indescribable monuments from a helicopter.

The scenery is spectacular, particularly the towering limestone islands of Halong Bay with its awe inspiring beauty. Ancient towns like the sleepy old Imperial City of Hue, and charming Hoi An, with its cobbled streets and colourful markets are so delightful - life here is slow and easy.

The main cities are fascinating and very different: frenetic Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) – never sleeps or pauses for breath, whilst Hanoi, with its Colonial French chic graced with elegant boulevards, is relaxed with the smell of freshly baked baguettes mingling with the aromas of Vietnams amazing cuisine!

Vietnams complex and poignant history will never be forgotten - and memories linger on – but one thing never changes.....the warmth and friendliness of the people.

v i e t n a mVietnam is a palette of colour: greens of every hue cover the craggy mountains of the north with their emerald paddy fields and ancient forests. Down on the coast stunning golden white sands and turquoise seas are almost to perfect to behold! The mighty Mekong River, the life blood of the country, is a rush of colour – whites, blues and greens.

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) is alive and pulsating – a modern metropolis with stylish international hotels, fashionable restaurants, shopping malls and trendy bars. Vietnam might have arrived late at Southeast Asia’s beach party, but it was worth the wait. The country boasts more than 3400km of coastline, with infinite stretches of powdery sand, hidden coves, lovely lagoons, impossible boulder formations and tropical islands ringed with yet more glorious beaches.

Incredibly gorgeous offshore islands astonish visitors with their scenery. Clichés are inevitable! phu Quoc is quite simply the most stunning island in Vietnam: liberally sprinkled with picture-perfect white sand beaches and embraced with dense evergreen jungle. Long Beach is sophisticated, Ong Lan Beach romantic, and Bai Sao utterly irresistible.

Con Dao is another breathtakingly beautiful area, protected as a national and Marine park. The beaches are sheltered by a swathe of brilliant green forested hills, the sea is an unbelievable blue and the sands..........blindingly white!

The beaches on the mainland vie with their offshore siblings for beauty. nha Trang is an old favourite with a hectic nightlife and the beach is yet another gem. Mui ne is an absolute charmer.

Dalat was originally built by the French approximately 100 years ago as an escape from the humid summers of the coast, and this heritage is still very much in evidence today. The landscape is a blanket of pine trees dotted with lakes and rivers. At 1475 metres above sea level, Dalat offers cool respite from the humid lowlands.

Bangkok is a city that never sleeps: it simply sizzles with life! Here you can shop till you drop.... party till dawn..... But, turn a corner and life slows to a traditional pace. Canals meander hither and thither, filled with people following their time-honoured daily life – selling goods, chatting to neighbours or visiting a nearby Temple – all by boat of course! Don’t miss the wonderful historic monuments including the magnificent Grand palace, once the Royal residence, with its towering gold encrusted towers, the extraordinary 45cm statue of the Emerald Green Buddha at Wat phra Kaew, and the Wat Traimit with its solid gold Buddha statue.

In the 13th C. Sukhothai was the capital of the first Kingdom of Siam, with its subsequent architecture evolving to become the zenith of the ‘Sukhothai style’. Set in beautifully manicured parklands, the beauty and sensitivity of design of the monuments is outstanding – classic elegance with delicate spires, delightful lotus ponds and enigmatic carved Buddha’s make this an incredible experience. Today it’s protected as a unESCO World Heritage site.

Conveniently close to Bangkok Ayuthaya, was for 400 years, the capital of Siam. Here history, religion and nationalism are all inextricably intertwined. Destroyed by its Burmese enemies the mighty city died leaving behind a ruin of its former glory. So great was the cities influence, in those far off days, that it literally put Siam ‘on the world map’ as the city.

Thailand is acclaimed for its glory of beaches on its offshore islands and Gulf coast. phuket is one of the most outstanding and popular Thai seaside destinations with some of the best beaches, nightlife and water sports in the country. Hua Hua - was Thailand’s first beach resort and is more relaxed and laid back. Most visitors to Krabi stay at the beautiful beach resort of Ao nang with its white sandy beach framed by dramatic limestone cliffs, amazing islets, and coral reefs bounded by swaying coconut palms.

Off the Andaman coast Koh Lanta is a small group of islands quieter than most Thai beachresorts. Long white sand beaches, with coconut palms rustling gently in the breeze, are perfectfor relaxing. Koh Samuii, in the Gulf of Thailand, has over 60 perfect tropical islets to explore and are almost too beautiful to be true!

Chiang Mai, the ancient northern capital is now, slowly, being absorbed into a new dynamic modern city juggling its heritage and culture. 300 Buddhist Temples grace the old city including the most famous –Wat phrathat Doi Suthep. Festivals are a passion in the area - the 3 day fragrant flower festival is beautiful beyond description, whilst the Loi Kratong festival is quite moving with people floating banana leaf containers (krathong) on the river, decorated with flowers and candles.

Founded in 1262 by King Mengrai, Chaing Rai became the capital of the Lanna Kingdom and is known as the ‘Gateway to the Golden Triangle’. The town is filled with Temples including the most famous Wat pra Keow, once the home to the famed ‘Emerald Buddha’. Take a trip to Mai Sai on the Thai/Myanmar border for a real ‘border town’ feeling. Become a mahout for a day at an amazing elephant sanctuary and help ‘rehabilitate’ retired working elephants, or trek through the jungle to visit remote tribal people. Then, after lunch river raft back ‘home’. numerous ethnic tribes live in the furthest regions of Thailand, including the Karen people famed for their beautiful embroidery and unique brass neck rings.

Bagan, is, as Kipling said about Burma ‘unlike any land you know’ – as indeed it does – simply taking your breath away. Temples and Stupas rise majestically as far as the eye can see – and further and further...

Built over a long period the monuments change in style and grandeur as each ruler vied with his predecessors to make his architectural religious mark. Sunset changes the landscape as the fading rays linger a moment, caressing the stone with muti-coloured rainbow hues and filling the sky with wonder. Then it is gone. The moment passed and night comes with darkness.

Y A n G O n

Yangon is alive and pulsating – yet it still retains its cloak of turn-of-the-century architecture with mansions straight from London and civic buildings in the immortal Colonial style. The extraordinary Shwedagon pagoda or Golden pagoda is totally unique – no building in Yangon dare rise higher than its Golden Spire – and encrusted with gold plate and the top studded with over 4500 diamonds with the final stone being 72 carat. Shaven-headed monks in chocolate or burgundy robes still walk solemnly, quietly accepting alms in the misty dawn. Markets teem with colour - with hawkers peddling everything you could possible imagine! Hidden alleys with amazing architecture are truly captivating. Smiling faces and warm greetings – this is Yangon.

I n L E L A K E

Close to Yangon in the fresh green highlands of the Shan Hills, lies the beautiful Inle Lake in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Small villages float on the waters, each with its own garden tethered in place by bamboo poles – gently rising up and down with the water level. Local fishermen are known for their distinctive rowing style which involves standing on one leg in the stern and wrapping the other around the oar. It evolved quite simply as a means to see where they were going as the lake is covered by reeds and floating plants! Hill tribes live in the surrounding verdant valleys and soaring mountains. Religious monuments abound including phaung Daw u with the shapes of its five 12th C. statues totally obscured by the offerings of gold leaf rubbed onto them.

M A n D A L A Y

‘The Road to Mandalay’ – the poem immortalizing Mandalay by Rudyard Kipling - still brings a sigh to the lips! It evokes the romance and history so closely intertwined in the former Royal capital and cultural heart of Burma. The main sights include the Royal palace with its surrounding moat and countless Monasteries and pagodas: all breathtakingly beautiful and demanding a visit. Highlights include the Shwenandow pagoda, with its walls exquisitely embellished with woodcarvings, the Mahamuni pagoda with its gold leaf covered Buddha and the Kuthodaw pagoda, home to the world’s largest book. It is estimated that 3 out of every 5 monks in Burma lives in the city!

no journey to Mandalay would be complete without a climb to the top of Mandalay Hill encrusted with wonderful stupas, and to linger, at the end of the day, watching the magnificent sunset. Much of the cities life revolves around the life giving Irrawaddy River, still a main artery of the country. Mandalay is also famed for its ongoing traditions of nurturing skilled craftsmen who created the “Shwe Chi Htoe” (Golden Weaving) tapestries, and, excel at wood carving and silver and bronze ware.

Life, for the myriad of city and village dwellers living along the banks, without the mighty rivers, would be impossible to comprehend – they’re the super highways with craft of every shape and size plying the waterways: from laden barges to bamboo rafts, elegant river cruisers and bustling ferries weaving their way constantly up and down stream. Along the riverbanks, small villages live as one with the rivers: children laugh and shout as they play, women pound clothes at the washing area and men take their small boats and fish for their supper.

Sometimes the only noise heard is the cacophony of sound from the jungle, which at dawn and dusk, becomes a riot of colour and noise as birds of every hue come to roost or take flight in the cool of the morning.

Occasionally wild elephants can be spotted quenching their thirst, imperiously ignoring the flashes from the cameras of the passing river cruise passengers!

Ancient ruins, gripped by the inexorable march of the jungle, enveloping all it touches, can still be seen, silent testimony to past golden ages. pagodas rise above the dense canopy and the echoes of Monks chanting float gently in the breeze. Today, major cities line the banks - a stark contrast to the village life that melds into the rivers - but even here, the pulse of the river still reigns supreme as it floods with the torrential monsoons or drops in times of drought – whatever the mood – the Mekong and Irrawaddy still hold sway over the millions who depend upon them for life.

B A n L A O L E E S C H O O L Chiang Rai, Thailand

100 kilometres from Chiang Rai city, Ban Lao Lee village, in the remote picturesque Vavee valley, is home to members of Thailand’s Hill Tribe peoples, who survive on a meagre income gleaned mainly from working on tea plantations. The school with approximately 200 pupils, aged from 4-15 years, is of vital importance to educate and give opportunities for the coming generations. Monies donated are secured by trust type funds set up to sponsor children, who show particular promise, or used to buy specific items needed – i.e playground equipment or books.

K A L A Y W A T A W Y A M O n A S T E R Y -Yangon, Myanmar

Kalaywa Monastery is located in the suburbs of Yangon. Many orphans and children from poor families are sent to live in the Monastery, out of necessity, as a novice Monk. Here children, some as young as 6 years old receive the basics of life..... food, shelter and an education. The aim of the Monastery is to ensure they become well versed in the Buddhist scriptures and to have modern academic tutoring. Due to financial constraints medical services are limited and donations go towards providing medical care; including checkups and medicines.

Indus’s moral compass is resolutely committed to giving something back to the communities that its tours visit in South-East Asia. We work with selected aid projects on a very transparent and simple platform – that our contributions and efforts should be tangible.

Working with our partners in Asia to ensure each Indus supported aid project is, in fact, a vital organisation working for the local people, we will donate £5.00 per person for every booking made to the region. Clients wishing to donate extra monies or items can either get in touch directly with the project or if you wish, Indus would be delighted to assist. Visits to the projects can be arranged (itinerary permitting) whilst on holiday.

We are currently supporting the following projects in Indochina, Thailand & Burma:

H I V C L I n I C F O R O R p H A n S Ba Vi, Hanoi, Vietnam

Donations to the HIV Clinic for Orphans in Ba Vi, Ha Tay province provides support to the Centre for Labour Education who manage the home. In Vietnam the children, innocents as they are, bear a stigma of shame for having HIV. Sadly, all the children at the centre have been abandoned by their parents who are unable to cope. Their ages ranging from virtual new borns to 16 years. The money is used to improve the living conditions of the children - anything from antiretroviral treatments to washing machines and fun days out.

S u A n L u A n G B O A R D I n G S C H O O L Luang Prabang, LaosRun by the Laos Government, The Suan Luang Ethnic Boarding High School, with over 600 pupils, mainly from minority tribes, is located 25 km south of Luang prabang. unfortunately the limited funding does not fully cover the running costs. Donations received provide basics including bedding and books. Also individual cases are evaluated to grant scholarships to aid students, who have not received their annual funding. Consequently they have to stop their studies and stay at home - perhaps midway through their school career - until the monies hopefully arrive.

H E A R T S u R G E R Y H O S p I T A LSiem Reap, Cambodia

The Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC), supported by ‘Friends Without A Border’, is the paediatric department for Siem Reap’s provincial Hospital, It also covers neighbouring provinces, providing a vital community service. The hospital sees roughly 300-400 children per day and has 50 inpatient beds. All treatment and inpatient care is provided free of charge as the majority of families are unable to pay even a modest sum. Monies donated will go towards specific projects or to pay for a particular treatment for a sick child.
