Province facilitated a workshop in Jayapura on
“Building Stakeholder Commitment in support
of UNODC’s Project - Countering Illegal
Logging and the linkages between Forest
Crime and Corrup on in Indonesia”. Papua
was made a project area by the government
with special considera ons that the forest of
Papua that are increasingly being threatened
needs to be protected.
Over 50 par cipants from the Ministry of
Forestry, provincial Ministry of Forestry,
police, military, A orney General’s Offi ce,
community leaders, and non-governmental
organisa ons par cipated. A work plan for
the project was designed in consulta on with
all.

mee ng in Bangkok. The mee ng allowed
senior management to take stock of the
regional programme, discuss emerging
opportuni es for programme expansion
and to develop a regional ac on plan. A key
focus of the mee ng also involved refl ec ng
on lessons learned and program results.

and accountability within Indonesian Na onal
Police.
Ini ated by the Head of SESPIM Inspector
General Paulus Purwoko, ini ated a na onal
seminar to discuss the formula on of police
accountability, problems and ideal solu ons
at the conceptual and implementa on
levels. Commisioner General Nanan
Soekarna, UNODC Country Manager, Mr.
Ajit Joy and Chair of The Commission for
the “Disappeared and Vic ms” of Violence,
Usman Hamid were speakers at this seminar.

Urban crime symposium gathers experts from across Asia to share global perspec ve

hosted its 3rd
symposium on
“Learning from
Japan” tled, “Enriching the Way to Crime-
Free Society: The Crea on of Safe and Secure
Urban Living Environment.” The symposium
drew eminent speakers and par cipants
from academia and the law enforcement
communi es of Indonesia and Japan, other
speakers included the Japanese Ambassador to
Indonesia.
During the symposium speakers discussed
their ideas concerning the desirability of a
crime-free society, zero-tolerance enforcement
approaches, and the role of police in
theore cal and prac cal terms. UNODC
Country Manager, Mr. Ajit Joy presented a
paper on urban crime in Jakarta, ci ng the
city’s remarkably low reported crime rate while
assessing poten al threats and nega ve trends
that could poten ally impinge law enforcement
eff orts in Jakarta.
Grass root civil society organiza ons gearing to fi ght corrup on in Indonesia

Partnership for
Governance
Reform are
suppor ng 15 civil society organiza ons to lead
the fi ght against corrup on across Indonesia.
Through this Norway-funded ini a ve, each
civil society organiza on will receive a grant of
up to US$ 30,000 for one year’s work.
The Partnership for Governance Reform
organized an orienta on and training session
for the selected civil society organiza ons in
Semarang. This training was to revise or modify
the submi ed proposal and plan of ac vi es
so that it would be more achievable and
conforming to the logical framework.
In an interview with the par cipants, a
representa ve from the Medan civil society
organisa on feels that if more and more
organiza ons like the UNODC would support
the people’s movement against corrup on,
this would be a posi ve prospect for the future
whereby the people would be far more vigilant
