INDUCT ION TASK
WEEK 1
MUSIC PRESS & JOURNALISM
Music Journalism is an intrinsic part of the music industry, not only in terms of promoting music products,
but also in maintaining the continuous dialogue between the music artist and consumer.
A music journalist benefits from a wide reaching contextual understanding of the music industry. The abil-
ity to research and write well about your own and others’ music and culture is a valuable skill that will
benefit you far beyond the journalistic sector.
TASK 1 Research one journalistic piece from an online or physical source. E.g. an online album review by
The Guardian or a music interview in a physical Q Magazine
Screen shot the publication you have chosen and copy it into Microsoft Word/Publisher/
PowerPoint. Alternatively, you could take a photo of it if it’s a physical resource.
Annotate the article by writing a short analysis of the content (what is included in the article e.g.
interview questions, the discussed topics etc.), the structure of the article (how does the piece flow?
Does it gradually build throughout? Why is this?), the tone of language (is it formal or casual? Why
do you think this is? What effect does it have on the reader? Does it have interview questions? If so,
how are these posed to the person answering?, the possible target audience (who do you think this
article appeals to? What are your reasons?)
*At least 500 words worth of annotations, please*

All units on the Commercial Music course are comprised of both written and practical music tasks. Due to
the pandemic and the nature of home-learning, these induction tasks will only be written to enable you to
submit them via email with ease. Please do not think that five written tasks means we will not be playing
our instruments that much; this is far from the case.
