Inductive Limit Switches
4 Subject to technical modifications; no responsibility is accepted for the accuracy of this information.
Inductive multiple and single limit switches are used for positioning and control in all areas of mechanical and systems engineering. They are ideal for performing automation tasks in machines used in the wood, textile and plastics industries, as well as for areamonitoring in robot installations.
Thanks to their non-contact, wear-free principle of operation, inductive multiple and single limit switches are unaffected by strongvibrations or heavy soiling and have an above-average mechanical service life even under aggressive ambient conditions.
Five different inductive multiple limit switch designs with 8 mm, 12 mm or 16 mm proximity switch spacing are available to cover awide range of applications; these can be equipped in turn with a large number of different inductive switching elements. In additionto these multiple limit switches, the product range also includes single limit switches according to DIN 43693 and the particularlycompact ESN design. This flexibility ensures that a solution can be provided for practically any application.
Interchangeability with mechanical multiple and single limit switches means that machines can be converted without any problems. The switches can therefore be retrofitted on existing machine installations to take full advantage of the benefits of non-contactswitches.
The multiple limit switches can also be equipped with a mixed complement of mechanical safety switching elements and inductiveswitching elements for safety-relevant end of travel limit switching, EMERGENCY STOP functions or other safety-critical applications. In this way, the advantages of non-contact switching can be combined with positively driven NC contacts.

Trip rails / trip dogs
U-trip railsenable the adjustment of the trip dogs from the switch side. Thetrip dogs can be installed and adjusted quickly and easily in anylocation.
U-trip dogsare designed for use in U-trip rails. They have an expansion plateclamp and enable precise adjustment, even when the limit switchis activated.
G-trip railsenable the adjustment of trip dogs from the side opposite theswitch. They are made of steel and are protected from corrosionby a special surface treatment. Trip rails can be ordered pre-assembled or as a component for self-assembly.
G-trip dogsare designed for use in G-trip rails. The trip dogs are clamped inthe trip rail by a hexagon socket screw with spring washer. Thiswasher locks the trip dog in place even when the trip rail is invertical position, and allows precise adjustment.

Rated operating distance sn
The rated operating distance is a generalvariable used for measurement of opera-ting distances. It does not take into ac-count either the production tolerances orchanges caused by external effects suchas voltage and temperature.
Assured operating distance sa
The assured operating distance is theoperating distance at which correct ope-ration of the inductive switching elementis guaranteed within the permissible ope-rating conditions (temperature and volta-ge).The actuation distance lies between 0 and81 % of the rated operating distance sn.

Repeat accuracy RThe repeat accuracy is the accuracy withwhich the real operating distance sr isreproducedr for two switching actions insuccession within 8 hours at an operatingtemperature of 23 ±5 °C and an operatingvoltage of UB ±5 %.
Operating voltage UB
The operating voltage defines the voltagerange in which the inductive switching ele-ment functions reliably. The specified va-lues represent limits without any toleran-ces. The values can be obtained by refer-ring to the technical data for the switchingelement. In the case of two-wire switchingelements, this is applicable only in seriesconnection with the load.
Voltage drop Ud
The voltage drop is measured across theactive output of the inductive switchingelement when the output is in the „through-connected“ condition and when the ratedoperating current Ie flows.
Rated operating current IeThe rated operating current is the nomi-nal current which can load the inductiveswitching element in continuous operation.
Off-state current IrThe off-state current is the current whichflows in the load circuit of an inductiveswitching element in the non-conductingcondition. In practical terms, this currenthas to be taken into account only for two-wire switching elements.
Operating current, minimum ImThe minimum operating current is the mi-nimum current required for the functioningof a 2-wire switching element in activeenergized condition.
Inrush current IKThe inrush current is the maximum currentwhich can flow in an AC-2-wire switchingelement for a particular period at themoment it is switched on. The details inthe technical data are valid for 20 ms.
Switching frequency fThe switching frequency is the maximumpossible number of switching operationsper second. This is determined accordingto IEC 60947-5-2 and is based on a mark-space ratio of 1:2. The switching frequen-cy is a switch-specific variable and canbe obtained by referring to the technicaldata for the switching element.
Ambient temperature TThe ambient temperature is the temperaturerange in which the reliable operation of theinductive switching element is guaranteed. This range is between - 25 and + 70°C.
Temperature drift ∆∆∆∆∆sThe temperature drift defines the offset inthe switching point in µm/K on a change inthe ambient temperature from -25 to +70 °Cunder otherwise constant measurement con-ditions.

Inductive switching elements accordingto NAMURThese switching elements fulfill the speci-fication IEC 60 947-5-6 and IEC 61 934.The current consumption at UB = 8.2 V isgreater than 2.5 mA when the oscillatorface is not activated and less than 1.0mA when the oscillator face is activated. The current consumption characteristicis linear during the transition from theinactivated to the activated state of theoscillator face, i.e. these switches do nothave a snap action.
Customized versions
DC-2-wire switching elementsTwo-wire switching elements can be usedin principle instead of mechanical swit-ches. Their low off-state current makesthem especially suitable for use in con-junction with programmable logic control-lers.Compared with three-wire switching ele-ments they have the advantage of requi-ring less wiring.
The inductive switching elements are lar-gely protected against external interferenceby use of various circuit techniques (sup-pressor circuits). For utilization category DC-13 the outputmust be protected with a free-wheelingdiode for inductive loads.
Short-circuit and overload protectionThe inductive switching elements aredesigned so that short circuits cannotdamage the outputs. Pulsed short-circuit protection is used. This means that the output transistor isswitched off and on again in quicksuccession in the event of overloading ora short-circuit. In this way, it is possible toestablish whether the fault is still presentor has been rectified.
Suppressor circuits
Transient protectionEUCHNER proximity switches are protectedagainst interference caused by the occur-rence of inductive voltage peaks in accor-dance with IEC 801-4. The respective va-lues are specified in the technical data.Testing is performed in accordance withthe stipulations in DIN VDE 0660, Part 208and IEC 947-5-2.
Wire break safetyEUCHNER proximity switches with wirebreak protection are designed so that theswitch does not output spurious signalsin the event of a break in any connectingwire.
Reverse polarity protectionProtection against reverse polarization ofthe operating voltage.
NO functionThe NO function means that the load cur-rent flows when the sensing face of theinductive switching element is activatedand that no current flows when the sen-sing face is undamped.
NO + NC functionThe NO + NC function incorporates bothan NO function and an NC function.Associated circuit diagrams and wiringdiagrams are given in the technical data.
NC functionThe NC function means that the load cur-rent does not flow when the sensing faceof the inductive switching element is acti-vated and that current flows when the sen-sing face is undamped.
