EVENTS

Masters of Air performing in and for the USABy Paul Humphreys

The Marriot in Marco Island, Florida, played

host to the U.S. leg of the Industrial Air “Masters

of Air” tour. This two day event involved over 100

attendees from all across the U.S., as well as members of the Product Marketing Team from Airpower.

This set-up allowed the presentations to be dually presented; with one half being presented by the U.S. based Product Manager and the second

half by their Airpower counterpart. For every topic, the audience received both a global and a local perspective.

Focal to the two days was a custom exhibition area which showcased

some of the new and updated products that have been launched or are in the process of being launched, such as the new LS Piston Range and the new Nitrogen

Membrane Generator, which proved to be a massive draw among the attendees.

The audience was not without a voice during the event and success stories from the field

were presented to the group. During the Monday night, a “Masters on Air” Oscar’s style theatre was set up and the attendees were tasked to make 30 second commercials on the products in the display area. Participants could give their creativity a free

rein and the winners were announced the following day. Tuesday’s session was very interactive and featured a

guest speaker focusing on Dealer Development. The event was appropriately finished with a dinner and live karaoke event, which was jointly held with colleagues from the CTS team in the U.S.

“We wanted the attendees to go on a journey and understand what we mean when we say Masters of Air” commented Robert Eshelman, VP of Industrial Air in the United States. “We want to position ourselves as the industry experts in our customers’ minds and being known as the Masters of Air is something we continually strive to achieve”.

“Being known as the Masters of Air is something we continually strive

to achieve.

Railway compressors go hydraulic

by Klaas-Willem Roest

In their new production facilities in Chambly, the Railway Competence

Center has room for expansion… They have designed hydraulic-driven air

compressors up to 37 kW and test them on their new, state-of-the-art test bench

for hydraulic devices.

This brand-new product portfolio meets the demands of the railway market,

but also those of related applications like construction & mining vehicles, service vehicles and agriculture.

Hydraulic motors – the mobile powerAfter electricity and combustion engines, hydraulic systems are the third system to transfer high power energy from a source to the point of use. A hydraulic system runs similarly to compressed air, but instead of air, hydraulic oil is the medium by which power is transferred. The oil flow to the hydraulic motor generates

pressure, which regulates the speed of the motor, based

on the volume swept off the motor. We have

8 different motors available to

run our

compressors within the

speed limits.

Hydraulic systems are specifically used

in “mobile” applications, especially those applications that also make use of hydraulic systems to power other devices than their compressed air system. Powering their compressor by a hydraulic system, means they do not have to invest in generators or combustion engines.

A second advantage is the compactness of a hydraulic motor, it is a small, simple and low-weight design: even up to 10 times smaller and lighter than an engine or electric motor.

Atlas Copco’s railway compressors put to the testAtlas Copco’s Railway Competence Center has been developing hydraulic compressors for a few years now. Earlier this year, we presented our hydraulic-driven piston compressors on several exhibitions. The LER 3-10, LFR 3-10 and the LTR 3-10 are based on standard LE/LF/LT block, but adapted to tough railway conditions. The LER is now ready to be ordered as a basic model, so without dampers.

The LFR and LTR will be available on demand, the article number will be assigned by first order. We have some options available like a full metal (remote) heavy duty filter and railway-approved vibration dampers and of course we can customize a complete system on request.

The GAR oil-injected screw c o m p r e s s o r s are now also available in a compact, l o w - w e i g h t h y d r a u l i c version in 2 ranges: the GAR 5-14 and GAR 11-37. Because there are so many various options and customization possibilities, we have no standard machines available. For every order or series of machines, we will create a dedicated article number.

Thanks to our brand-new test bench, we can develop and test these new hydraulic products according to the Atlas Copco standards as well as the stringent railway requirements. On Hannover Messe in April 2011, we had an exclusive preview of a very recent development: the direct-drive hydraulic screw compressor. Thanks to our new test bench, we can test and develop this unique concept even further and we plan to launch it end of this year.

Automan piston compressors are on the rise

by Bert Dirks

The Atlas Copco Automan range of piston compressors have proved to be a sustainable

product in the product portfolio of Atlas Copco. For our distributors, this range is one of the most important models to complete the range of compressed air products in their showrooms.

From dealer to distributor to reseller and whole seller, everybody in your region can sell these “off the shelf” products.

Distributor container salesThe Automan is a typical product for distributors, who can help you to increase Atlas Copco’s market share. In the last 12 months, more countries started to realize this and since the introduction, success stories came from Germany, France, India, Belgium, Swiss and Spain. Now other countries like Bangladesh, Algeria, Argentina, Colombia, South Africa and Peru also experience the advantages of the Automan and all these countries have order containers full of Automan piston compressors. Their local distributors are now working on promoting the Atlas Copco brand.

From blue to greyIn order to keep the differentiation clear within the products of Atlas Copco brand we are going to change the Automan color from blue to the well-known Atlas Copco grey color. The make-over will start in Q4 and we

will phase out the blue versions in different timing for each model. For a short time there will be a mix of the 2 colors because of stock units. The leaflet will remain as it has been launched earlier this year, only the color of the units will change. The exact date will be communicated later.

ModificationsIn the past months the Automan range has been modified, including an improved pressure switch from Condor. The drain valve on the receiver has been replaced with a ball valve.

Automan in the futureIn order to increase the product offer for our distribution channel we are working on more models for this important basic range. New developments are base mounted units and silenced tank mounted. We are also investigating if there is a need for petrol and diesel driven units. If you have suggestions and input on this matter, do not hesitate to contact us...

Workstation vans - a story from BelgiumOne of these success stories comes from Belgium, where local Sales Engineer Filip Dillen sells Automan compressors to ACT Research, a manufacturer of mobile workstations. They integrate the Automan AC30, mounted on a 150 liter vertical vessel, in these vans. This reliable, compact compressor is perfect to be built in. ACT Research offers these customized vans as complete workstations to their end customers.

The Automan as we all know it...

... the Automan in his new look.

Poland organizes “workshop without oil”By Agnieszka Trzaska and Arek Mrokwa

It is our ambitious goal to double the share of GAC47 in total sales of our division. That means

we should focus on those sectors that have a lot of oil-free applications.

That was exactly the main goal of this one-day workshop in September: to intensify sales representatives’ focus on oil-free compressors, with the active support of our colleagues from Airpower who are responsible for the oil-free products.

Why holding a oil-free only workshop?Workshops encourage participants to be active, which makes it one of the most effective training methods. Discussion and presentations, some of them prepared by the participants themselves, allowed them to get familiar with our oil-free products and technology.

Arek Mrokwa, BLM of Industrial Air Poland, presented the analysis of oil-free compressors’ market potential.

Colleagues from Airpower shared their knowledge and best practices from the other markets. Every presentation was followed by a discussion and opportunities to share ideas.

Pure air for sensitive applicationsOne of the main messages came from Vladimir Kozłowski, GM Atlas Copco Poland: oil-free compressors are like a good insurance policy. Consistency in oil-

f r e e air systems avoids risks of contamination of the end product and the high costs as the inevitable result.

Our colleagues’ p r e s e n t a t i o n s were based on real projects where oil-free compressors demonstrated their advantages.

All this information can be directly taken to the field. Participants can start

updating their knowledge on potential and typical customers, like hospitals, water treatment plants, companies in food & beverage, pharmaceuticals and chemicals.

We will also prepare an educational campaign concerning oil-free compressors and the risks of oil contamination in oil-free applications.

Although oil-free compressor sales do not constitute the largest chunk of

Industrial Air sale’s, oil-free technology has great opportunities for significant

sales increase. In the “workshop without oil” in Poland sales representatives got to know the technology, the applications

and the market.

“Very good idea and good organization. It allowed me to fully focus on key points.

Marta, participant

“ We had an opportunity to

exchange experience and to refresh our

knowledge. Workshop as training method is

very interesting.Rafał, participant

The workshop was all about discussing and sharing ideas, rather than participants sitting still and watching presentations.

VSD Bounty Hunters from Poland celebrate their victory in ParisBy Agnieszka Trzaska

In the last weekend of September, 14 colleagues from Industrial Air in Atlas

Copco Poland traveled to the City of Light, for a weekend full of impressions, entertainment, art and a feel of city life.

The decision to visit Paris was not taken lightly: the Industrial Air team

held a poll and

the majority voted in favor of Paris. Their citytrip took them along some famous Parisian landmarks like the Eiffel tower, the Champs-Elysées, the Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre Museum, Georges Pompidou Centre, a cruise on the Seine and Père Lachaise cemetery. In the evening they got to wind down at some French dinner and

cabaret. This weekend away to one of the most inspiring venues in Europe is sure to trigger new energy for bringing the VSD technology to the Polish market.

Poland was one of the winners in the VSD Champions League 2010-2011. They were the first

country in their group (Europe 1), so they received €10 000... and

they found the perfect way to spend their reward...

APPLICATION STORY

SUMOL+COMPAL produces juices, nectars, non-carbonated soft drinks, canned vegetables, tomato products and fruit pulps and the company sells its products in more than 50 countries. The

number of employees reaches 1400 and its turnover is around EUR 340 million / year.

In Almeirim, about 100km north of Lisbon, lies one of the main facilities of the company. The Almeirim plant was one of the first industrial facilities in Portugal to obtain Quality Certification under ISO 9002:1994. In 2008 the production and marketing of pasteurized fruit pulp packed in aseptic PET was certified according to BRC reference.

Relationship based on high standard requirementsFor all these reasons, it is obvious that SUMOL+COMPAL demands the same quality from its suppliers and equipment.

The relationship with Atlas Copco began early in the new millennium, with the challenge to set up a new compressed air installation for the new plant in Almeirim. The company’s main requirement for the production of compressed air was efficiency, as Rui Miguel, Head of Planning / Maintenance of the company explains:“So we installed the first variable speed compressor in our facilities with remarkable results in terms of energy efficiency. The VSD technology adapts the compressed air output to the needs of our real consumption, which by nature of our business, suffers several regime changes over time”.

Currently the compressed air installation has five active compressors, of which three are from Atlas Copco, one GA 180VSD, which covers for the general compressed air requirements like conveyor belts and two oil-free water-injected AQ37VSD and AQ55 compressors, specifically used for the compressed air network of PET aseptic filling lines, where the oil-free air is a requirement. Atlas Copco also provided and certified the air net of the oil-free installation and could, if required, also supply general compressed air net.

“A flexible solution that perfectly suited our needs,” explains Rui Miguel, who also notes that the “sustainability and adequacy in terms of energy efficiency are necessarily evaluated on any solutions that we acquire. And Atlas Copco has responded to the challenge.”

In addition to the equipment and air net, also technical service is provided by Atlas Copco.

Future PartnershipsSUMOL+COMPAL is satisfied with Atlas Copco’s equipment and service and this project proved to be a successful partnership. “We have taken some risks in the installation of some innovative solutions. This is a shared risk that has been evaluated together with Atlas Copco, and the balance is positive “,

says Rui Miguel. SUMOL+COMPAL looks beyond the borders of the Portuguese market and has the ambition to grow effectively in the emerging international markets where it is already present with local commercial operations. “This growth may go through local partnerships or our own investment in production facilities,” says the company’s representative. And he adds: “Then, surely, we have to look into Atlas Copco’s solutions again. We obviously consider extending our relationship with a supplier with whom we developed several projects with these great results.”

Food & beverage company profits from effective partnerships

“A flexible solution that perfectly suited our

needsRui Miguel, Head of Planning/Maintenance SUMOL+COMPAL

SUMOL+COMPAL holds a leading position in the Portuguese drinks and

food products market. Itspartnership with Atlas Copco began

with acquiring a GA VSD compressor for non-food applications, extending it to two AQ VSD oil-free water-injected

compressors for their production lines. Energy efficiency and sustainability are

cornerstones of SUMOL+COMPAL in their choice of equipment.

By Catarina Teixeira

Atlas Copco’s compressed air powers 18 production lines in the factory. Sumol+Compal’s capacity surpasses the 160 000 ton per year.

Don’t forget to boost your own AQ sales! The AQUA Boost campaign still runs until end of 2011.

New product information online

Once you land on the Atlas Copco homepage, the product information is just one mouse click away.

The new product pages integrate perfectly in the website, an improvement on the old product information.

Even the language of the product information corresponds to the language the visitor has chosen for the website. That means we have translated every product page in up to 21 languages. A huge task, that could only be realized thanks to the cooperation of our local translation reviewers in the customer centers around the world.

Getting to our productsAnd the new product pages have more improvements in store... The most powerful of all is the new search engine that allows to quickly find products by searching on product name, description, keywords or article number. That search engine is continuously updated and improved, so in the future your search results will become even more accurate.

Getting into our productsAs soon as you have found your product, a dedicated page bundles all the information on that product:

pictures, product description and benefits, technical data and links to relevant websites or related products. Also leaflets, application stories and movies can be integrated directly on the product’s page.

When a prospect is happy with what he saw and read, there is an option to compare up to three products side by side. The left-hand column is always visible, showing direct links to contacts, information on spare parts and rental and options to request information. However, the new product pages are not a web shop, so ordering online is not (yet) part of the scope.

Discover the new product pages by simply visiting your local Atlas Copco website. if you would like to launch the new product pages to your external stakeholders, the project team offers a set of templates you can use. Download them on their dedicated webpage.

Your suggestions and user experiences are most welcome at [email protected].

One of the largest projects in the Atlas Copco Group finally came

together: the new online product information is a catalogue

that harbors all Atlas Copco’s products: from compressors to

tools and mining equipment.

A complete list of all products shows Atlas Copco’s versatility, while the bright yellow search field invites visitors to look for something specific.

A product page explains all the benefits of a product, at the bottom the leaflet is available for download and in the tab sheets pictures, videos and stories are available.

Comparing products side by side is another way of guiding customers through our portfolio.

OneNote: the digital notebook

Mi c r o s o f t O n e N o t e

2010 is a digital notebook that supports not only text, but also pictures, videos, drawings

and audio recordings. You can share your notes with others and a powerful search engine allows you to quickly retrieve all the information you stored in your OneNote. Microsoft claims it is comparable to all the notes you make on paper, in mailboxes and files on your computer, but with the advantage you can offline and online share and search your notes.

Notebooks - organizing your informationOne of the basic concepts within OneNote is “notebook”: a collection of notes of all types that are stored under one project. Of course you can have multiple notebooks (many people have notebooks for “Home”, “Work”, “School”,...) and every notebook can be subdivided in “Sections”. Those sections can be different topics in your notebooks, and each get a separate tab sheet (for example in the Notebook “School” you have tabs “Maths”, “Biology”, “History”, etc.).On an even lower level, you can have different “pages” under every section, like chapters in courses.

OneNote includes the option to save all your notes automatically, so you can really sketch, type and upload your information without bothering to save you work. A feature that is particularly useful in meetings and seminars...

Get noting, typing and drawingJust click in the workspace of your page and start typing. OneNote creates text boxes wherever you want them. Every page can be as large as you want, without the limitations of an A4 page or canvas.

You can drag in pictures, media files, web links and other files where you want them.

And if even all those features do not give you enough freedom, just go to “Draw” in your top menu and you can freely sketch, draw or handwrite your information.

Share and synchronizeHappy with your work? Or have you made something others should contribute to? Go to the “Share” and discover all the options to send your content around. You can choose to either share your notebook on a network or to host it online on the web.

OneNote is especially suited as a collaborative work tool. Changes made by others can be highlighted and you can track which author has edited the notebook. Next time you organize a brainstorm session, you could consider using OneNote instead of more static ways of sharing ideas...

You can also work offline and afterwards synchronize and merge with your own as well as others’ online content.

For more information, Microsoft has some online training material and help files.

OneNote is one of those programs that is as a standard application installed on your computer and maybe even on your

smartphone or tablet computer. But have you ever wondered what this program can

do? We will give you a short introduction to this digital notebook...

OneNote’s design resembles other Office applications, but also has the visual look and feel of a classic ring binder.

Collaborative work becomes possible thanks to various tracking options.

For the time being, OneNote only runs on Windows Phone 7 and iPhone, but a Blackberry version is expected.

Animated GIFs in your e-mail signature

In the previous Industrial Air News, we introduced our “animated GIFs” for the Focused Segments and

presented the animated GIF we created for Marine. In the meantime, we also finished the GIFs for Medical and Nitrogen.

We received lots of questions about this easy way to promote our microsites. A lot of people even indicated they want to send the animated GIF along with every e-mail. So here are the instructions on how to add the GIF to your e-mail signature.

Find the animated GIF on the GBP1. Download the animated gif from the GBP, we have

GIFs available for Marine, Medical and Nitrogen.2. Save it locally on one of your drives.

Make up your signatureOpen a new e-mail in Lotus Notes. You will see your signature as it is now. Just include the image where you want it.3. Click in your signature where you want the image. For

example right under you name and title. 4. Go to “Create” in the top menu > “Picture”.

Find the image in your folders and import it. Now the image is in your e-mail. Make it interactive by adding the link to the microsite:

5. Select the image by clicking once on it. Go to “Create” > “Hyperlink”. Fill in the URL (http://www.atlascopco.com/marine or www.atlascopco.com/medical or www.atlascopco.com/nitrogen).

6. Now your animated, interactive GIF is securely in place. You can test the link if you save the mail (as draft) or send it.

7. Important last step: copy your complete signature, including the image (select everything, click CTRL+C)

Activate your new signature Return to you inbox screen. Right above your list with incoming e-mail, you will find a button “More”. Choose “Preferences”. 8. Find the tab “Mail” and “Signature”. Now select

everything that is in your old signature, delete it. Then paste your new signature with the image in place (CTRL+V). Press OK to close.

Now you can start mailing the animated GIF around.

New sales leaflets

We have created a few new sales leaflets and datasheets in the past

months. All these are already available for order in English.

One of those actually precedes the launch of the product. The NGM is our new membrane nitrogen generator, which seems to be in popular demand even before we officially launch it. To support the presales of this innovative product, we created a datasheet.

The new Automan leaflet also includes a new direct-drive oil-free piston compressor model: the AH. Lightweight (10-22 kg), compact and easy to maintain, this oil-free piston can be carried anywhere to supply users with small flows of compressed air.

Also the CD 220-300 heatless adsorption dryer now has its own datasheet.

Your first point of contact.

Since October 2011, I am the new Management Assistant to the

Marketing department. I will support both the Atlas Copco and the Multibrand marketing teams and I am reporting to Koen Lauwers.

I hold a Bachelor degree in Communication Management, Public Relations from the Lessius College in Mechelen. My first job was as a event coordinator and management assistant to an Event and Safety Agency, a 5-year challenge that allowed me to gain a lot of experience.

Afterwards I worked as an office manager for a company specialized in Human Recource Managament and my last job was at the Local Police of Antwerp, where I worked as consultant and team leader Invoicing.

I will certainly put much of this experience to good use in my new function. I can help to plan events and organize visits from customer centers around the world. Of course I will also support the management team in their daily activities: keeping agendas up-to-date, preparing presentations, reports, trainings and meetings and handle the administration when they travel.

From now on, I will be your first point of contact in the Marketing Department. I look forward to meeting colleagues from all over the world.
