Beore maintenance projects can
start, precautions have to be taken -
machines and production lines must
be physically shielded to prevent
contamination or parts and materials
getting into the production process. All
our materials and equipment, including
scaolds, are specially cleaned beore

technicians wear protective clothing
while on site, such as dust-ree

Air-fows, work-fows and waste-

to reduce the impact on the working
environment.
One o the ood-industrys key
requirements is that dust ormationmust be prevented during insulation
work. To comply with this, all our
insulation and cladding is as ar as
possible pre-abricated, and only non
dust-orming materials are specied.
In terms o plant, machinery and

Our Preventive Maintenance
Programme (PMP) solutions are
based on a multidisciplinary approach
to maintenance or wellhead,
compression, production and satellite
platorms. We pre-abricate insulation
materials and supply site-specic
scaolding systems based on minimal
components or ease o erection.
To optimise labour costs on oshore
platorms, our operatives are
multiunctional - besides their expertise
in scaolding and insulating, they are
qualied proessionals in painting,
welding, tracing and rope access.
In oshore emergencies, it is vital that

immediate action to ensure the security
o all crews as well as the plant. All
our operatives are thereore required

At the start o each project, we work on
identiying customer specications and
carry out a risk-assessment, taking into
account the nature o the product being
generated at the site. Our extensive
experience with volatile substances
and working in hazardous environments
makes us a partner o choice or many
o the worlds biggest petrochemical
companies.
Scaolding erection, cladding,
insulation installation or removal, heat
exchanger cleaning and repairs are all
aspects o our work at petrochemical
plants. In addition to this we can also
inspect equipment, measure wall
thicknesses and undertake valve
expansion.
In a single production shutdown, any
combination o these may have to
be carried out beore production can
be restarted. Because downtime is
expensive, we take a tight and well-
disciplined approach, to guarantee that
no production stop ever takes longer
than strictly necessary.
Working together with our customers,
we develop long-term maintenance
schedules indicating priorities and
deadlines or months and years ahead.
The planning-based maintenance
approach prevents disruption and
expensive ad hoc solutions, resulting
in more controllable maintenance
costs. It also means reduced energy
consumption, while the pre-emptive
inspections or Corrosion Under
Insulation (CUI) reduce costs urther.
Harsco Inrastructure has proven

Opened in 1993, Peterborough Power
Station owned by Centrica Energy, is
a medium sized, gas-red plant with
an output o approximately 360MW.
Like most modern power stations,
Peterborough has an air-cooled
condenser grid which avoids the need
or clean water rom the local supply
and reduces the use o chemicals in
protecting the boilers and steam turbine.
We were approached to devise an
access solution or painting the main
supply pipes to the cooling grid. Access
rom below is made dicult by the
ragile condenser panels which extend
out at an angle below the pipes. Heavy
scaolding was also impractical due to
the lightweight structure o the cooling
grid which cannot support heavy loads.
Case study
c egy, Pgh Pw s, uK
Our solution was a pair o specially-designed mobile steel gantries supporting
conventional powered cradles. The cradles move both vertically and horizontally
along the gantry, while the gantries can be winched along the pipes on guide
wires. The gantries are mounted on two sets o o-set, jack-up wheels which
allow them to ride over the pipe ribs. The cradles can be lowered to the walkway
at the base o the condenser panels or easy access. Once work on each pair o
pipes is complete the entire gantry/cradle assembly is craned to the next row.
The entire assembly, painting and re-positioning operation is designed to be
carried out without aecting the normal operation o the power station.

Working with specialist abricator SBV Fabrications, we installed 11
MASTCLIMBERS. To access the 22 fat aces o the gas holder, we erected
single-masted platorms against each alternate ace and then re-erected them on
the remaining aces to complete the reurbishment.
Installation o the platorms was complicated by the presence o a large amount
o pipework, tanks and other obstacles at the base o the gas holder.
To overcome this, a 7m steel bridging structure was designed to transer the
weight o the masts to the ground. We also designed a special H-bracket to
tie the MASTCLIMBERS onto the gas holder without damaging the structure.
This is one o a number o term maintenance contracts which involves call outs
and shut downs either planned or emergency.
Steel giant Corus produced 3.5 million
tonnes o steel at its 3,000 acre Redcar
site every year and in the process
consumed high quantities o gas to

production cycle,the gas holder needed
to be periodically reurbished. We were

On 21st January 1890, two trains
rst crossed the Forth Rail Bridge,
travelling across two and a hal
thousand metres o track suspended
nearly 50 metres above the Firth
o Forth. This eat o engineering
remains an iconic structure and today
requires equal eats o
ingenuity to maintain. The exposed
location, the extraordinary structure,190 train movements per day and the
busy shipping lane below, make this
amous bridge one o the ultimate
access challenges.
Scaolding the bridge starts by reversing the conventional ground-up approach.
The evident complexity o the bridge, built with more curves than angles, means
that every scaolding member has to be individually designed, abricated and
suspended in position high above the Forth. Access platorms then have to be
encapsulated in plastic sheeting, to prevent old lead paint being shot-blasted into
the environment and to protect the new, glass fake epoxy paint rom the
weather while it dries.
The bridge is well over a 100 years old, but it takes 21st century technology
and expertise to keep it in sae use, making our experience on live industrial
maintenance invaluable. We have already supplied two and a hal thousand
tonnes o bespoke steel scaolding and at least another one thousand are
anticipated beore the project is complete.

The 847 Megawatt Langage Energy
Centre near Plymouth is the rst gas
red power station to be constructed in
the South East o England or several
years. The 400 million combined-cycle
power plant is being built by main
contractor Alstom Power on behal o
Centrica Energy. We were asked to
supply a comprehensive portolio o
access equipment, based on our recordo delivering sae and eective solutions
that meet programme deadlines.
We have provided a total o 200 tonnes o CUPLOK system scaold, two
MASTCLIMBERS and two 27m high mobile elevating work platorms (MEWPs).
The equipment was used to provide access or exterior cladding as well as or
plant installation and tting out o the main Turbine Hall and Heat Recovery
Steam Generator Building. Several large birdcage scaolds were created using
CUPLOK system scaolding to provide access to the underside o the distinctive
curved, roo overhang.

General contractor Strabag AG
approached us to develop an ecient
ormwork and scaolding solution with
prompt delivery o materials, including
various special ormwork solutions, or
this new power plant block.
The construction o the new Lignite Power Plant in Boxberg, is one o the
most challenging projects we have undertaken in recent years, both in terms o
ormwork and scaolding.
Sophisticated load bearing structures created rom our modular scaolding system
provided signicant savings in time and cost in the construction o the main
beams. Instead o bracing the building completely using rame scaold supports
at every level, orces were transerred using modular scaold towers arranged at
selected points. In this way it was possible to start other work on the lower levels
beore the nal storey was completed. Even where the production o the main
beams demanded a working platorm outside the building, this could be achieved
without diculty using system components.

Totals Lindsey Oil Renery at
Immingham is the UKs third-largest
renery, processing 200,000 barrels o
crude oil per day. For the construction o
their new Hydro Desulphurisation plant,
contractor Jacobs needed multi-purpose
access or all trades involved in this
complex project the largest o its type
currently under construction in the UK.
The project has involved the construction o approximately 10,000 scaold
structures utilising over 3,300 tonnes o scaolding equipment and up to
180 operatives. Key products employed were CUPLOK system scaolding,
conventional tube and ttings and a range o beams or larger spans.
Providing sae access or all trades, as well as the logistics o managing the supply
and welare o a large workorce in a relatively remote location, required careul
planning and constant liaison with all the project teams. Our solution included the
provision o a skilled, specialist management team based at our on-site compound
incorporating supervisors, administration, saety and logistics personnel.
Harsco Inrastructure now provides an access and insulation support service
which includes planned and unplanned outages.

A joint venture between Shell and
Saudi Aramco, the Motiva Enterprises
Renery in Port Arthur, Texas,
expanded to become the largest in
America and one o the top ten in
the world. As part o this project,
approximately 53 new renery
modules were assembled at
Cianbros Modular Manuacturing
Facility in Brewer, Maine, eachrequiring a vast amount o scaolding
to set all the various pipes and
structural beams in place.
With very little continuity in design, as each module diers rom the next, there is
only one-eighth o an inch margin or error, as all structural, piping and unctional
elements have to t precisely. The harsh winters in Maine add to the challenges
o working outside at this scale.
Harsco Inrastructures scaold system was chosen or its high levels o
adaptability, which means dierent lengths and heights can be accommodated
without interruption, and projected levels o productivity can be maintained.
Scaolding specications or this vast and complex project have, to date, drawn
on 90% o the component range. During winter assembly, some modules were
wrapped in more scaolding and plastic sheeting to provide shelter rom the
weather. Finally, ater each module was completed, they travelled by barge rom
Maine, around the Florida coast and then west to Texas. Once in Port Arthur, the
modules were assembled together to orm the renery. This mega-project will
increase the renerys current capacity o 275,000 barrels per day to more than
600,000 barrels per day.

SABIC, (Saudi Arabia Basic Industries
Corporation), is one o the worlds
leading manuacturers o chemicals,
ertilizers, plastics and metals. In Europe
they are a major producer o polymers,
chemicals and innovative plastics.
Their Wilton and North Tees chemical
complex in Teesside is one o the UKs
largest chemical plants, producing
ethylene, propylene and butadiene
as well as housing a major logistical
acility incorporating large scale storage
capacity, a cross-country pipelines
network and distribution and shipping
services.
To accommodate the maintenance
and upgrading o the plants Butadiene
Columns, SABIC required a 64m high
weatherproo access structure which
could accommodate the stripping,
cladding, painting and re-cladding o
these complex vessels whilst the towers
remained operational.
Working around live plant places heavy responsibility on designers, managers and
erectors and highlights our traditional strengths o saety, technical innovation and
attention to detail. To deliver the painting and insulation requirements rather than
opting or conventional tube and ttings scaold, we devised a solution using
CUPLOK system scaolding. Not only was this able to accommodate the many
pipe-runs connecting into the tower, it provided clear working platorms, ree rom
diagonal braces. It was also substantially quicker to erect the CUPLOK system,
saving the client time and money. The scaold structure was clad using the latest
breathable sheeting to allow or any plant leakage without compromising blasting
and painting operations, and topped with a ventilated roo structure spanningacross the towers.

To create weatherproo access solutions
in a exposed coastal environment or
the new build o a regasication plant or
customer Taylor Woodrow.
For the construction o this major new regasication plant in West Wales, we
developed and erected a series o weatherproo access solutions or the installation
o insulation or the tanks and pipelines. The insulation work had to be carried out
under protected and dry conditions a particular challenge in view o the exposed
coastal position o the plant.
Our solution was developed using a modular aluminium roong system. Despite
its light weight, it was able to span large widths. The structure was covered with a
translucent covering, allowing all work to be carried out in daylight with ull protection
against the weather.
