September 2009

Dear all,

September. The year in comfortable middle age: impetuous spring, a distantmemory; failing winter, still to come. A time of change; not the bursting change ofMarch, but a gentle mellowing.

Change is a strange thing. With no change at all, there would be no time: everythingfrozen, forever. Change brings loss, if only the loss of today to yesterday. Changealso allows hope.

1100 years ago, Athelm, a monk of Glastonbury Abbey, became the first Bishop ofWells. A lot of water has flowed along the Chew since then. What changes has theriver seen? The Norman bishops ousting the Saxon. The monks of Bath and thecanons of Wells jostling for the See, with the Bishop swapping seats faster thanchildren playing musical chairs; Pope Innocent IV calling it a dead heat, formingBath & Wells. The Lollardy heresy, with Pensford’s priest excommunicated. Thedissolution of the monasteries; a huge change for the people of our parishes, withtheir connections with the monasteries at Bath, Keynsham, and Glastonbury. TheQuakers, hiding from persecution here. The Methodists, with John Wesley himselfpreaching in Pensford (20 October, 1775, if you’re curious; a Wednesday); and soon, and so on…

Just names and dates. Hard to connect with, perhaps, but think what impact someof those changes had on people’s lives: deeply held beliefs, habits of practice, everyday certainties, gone.

We are of course in a period of (somewhat smaller-scale) change in the Benefice atthe moment. Our third Rector in as many years will hopefully be arriving later thisyear; she or he will doubtless make changes. And the Archdeacon told us at arecent open meeting that this will be the last Rector contracted for only a few hoursa week, without pay; after that, there will be a full-time salaried priest, but one withadditional duties beyond the Benefice. On current plans – we shall see how it turnsout.

Good or bad, change is inevitable. Except from pay-and-display machines.

Matthew Critten

The Chew Valley Branch of ARC has beenvery busy in the last two months raisingfunds for this worthwhile charity. On 21stJune Mr and Mrs Southwell kindly openedtheir beautiful garden in Litton for us withall profits going to ARC. On a day thatcould not decide whether to be sunny orjust to drizzle on us, we neverthelessmanaged to raise £308. 90. Everyoneenjoyed wandering leisurely around thegarden and then relaxing over tea, coffeeand cakes. Then on 15 July Peter Handleyhosted his popular Coffee Morning atWayside Bishop Sutton. This time theweather looked decidedly unkind to beginwith, but the optimistic team of helpersput chairs, tables and stalls outside andamazingly the sun decided to shine.£330.30 was raised during the morning.Tony Wade organized a very successfulPaper Quiz and raised £224, the winnerreceiving a £25 Garden Voucher.Unfortunately this good fortune, as far asthe weather was concerned, could notlast, and members of the committee spenta very wet day at Somerfield in Yattonwith their collecting buckets on 29 July. You may recall that a monsoon hit the

Arthritis Research Campaign Fundraisingarea that day and Somerfield’s car parkrapidly turned into a very uninvitingswimming pool. Despite this, £162. 25was collected from the extremely wet, butvery generous shoppers. Maybe they feltsorry for us. Sorry to mention the weatheronce again, but the final event in July, was a secondhand book sale on 31 Julyat the Chew Valley Fruit Farm in BonhillRoad Bishop Sutton, when miraculouslythe sun shone. A total of £152 was raisedand thanks go to all those who supportedus both by donating and buying books. This is the second time that this eventhas taken place and special thanks go toJulie le Valliant for finding the space for itin her busy shop, and think how manythings you could do at the same timewhen you came along to it. Where elsecould you buy beautiful fresh fruit andvegetables, browse over dozens ofinteresting books and hopefully buy a few, recycle the books you no longer want, thus doing your bit for the planet, meetup with friends over coffee, and all thisright on your doorstep? Another book salewill be planned probably around the endof the year.

Open Day

Pretty jolly scary!!.....no, not the Show, but the five scarecrows that were at thedoor to welcome visitors to ChelwoodVillage Hall. There was a delightfulcountry maiden (pretty),a plump farmer(jolly) and a doctor from your worst evernightmare (scary) plus a little one and alarge one to keep them company. Veryimpressive.Inside was just as interesting - a threefeet long “Nessie” made from marrowsand turnips; green and yellow“parakeets”in a cage that on closerinspection turned out to be courgettes.Cakes depicting topical subjects such asCricket and TV cartoon characters andthere was a huge display of classic fruit, victoria sponge and chocolate cakes.Flower arrangers produced magnificentdisplays;children showed lovely works ofart including painting on silk. They also

CHELWOODFLOWER SHOW

made super models out of waste materialsand had obviously enjoyed themselves inthe process. A plentiful supply ofvegetables, flowers, jams and chutneysshowed the hard work that goes on aroundthe villages. This year there were 401 entries and £725was raised towards the building costs forthe upkeep of the Village Hall. Thank youall for your exhibits, for visiting the Show, for spending ridiculous amounts of moneyat the Auction and for providing a goodfew laughs along the way. Jackie Young

PUBLOW WITHPENSFORD MU

Compton Dando Village Hallwas the venue for the Mothers’ UnionDeanery Tea Party this year on 7th July. Itwas a happy “get together” afternoon. ACream Tea was served and there were‘goodies’ to purchase on the Bring andBuy table. There was a lovely display ofMU cards with some of this year’sChristmas Cards already available! Theladies who won in the raffle were fortunatethis time as the prises were really super. We spent a most enjoyable afternoontogether. On 9th July, our usual MU Day, eight of usmade a visit to Congresbury where we

had lunch and then visited their ParishChurch of St. Andrew and the quietgarden there. The garden was a verytranquil and relaxing place to be but it isat present in need of some ‘tender lovingcare’ which is obviously in short supplyat the present time. We were able tomake tea in the Refectory and after arefreshing cup made our way homeward. Our thanks to Ann and Linda for kindlybeing our chauffeurs for this trip. Muchappreciated by the 6 of us.Our next meeting in the Church Roomwill not be until 10th September when weshall have a Harvest Bring and Sharegathering. New comers most welcome,do join us at 2.15pm.
