Proposals for an Improved CERN PXI Support
First CERN PXI Users Group meeting - 19th October 2011 - H. Reymond - EN/ICE

Why to Establishthe CERN PXI Users Group ?
To allow knowledge sharing about PXI Experience about HW / SW Known issues on drivers, cards, LV-RT, …
To promote the use of PXI at CERN by helping new users Selecting the best PXI solution that fits their needs Best programming practices (i.e. RT, fast triggering, …)
To be stronger actors when requesting new features/improvements Asking development of CERN specific using Improving existing PXI cards for our needs

CERN PXI Users Group
Mandate of the CERN PXI Users group :
Validate a catalogue of recommended components
Build knowledge base for configuration & use
Define the critical spare parts, managed by EN-ICE

More than 1500 PXI products are available Proposal for a reduced list of well known equipment From National Instruments and other firms
Based on most popular PXI cards used at CERN…
… and on domain specific components
Catalogue of recommended components
RF Generation & Analysis Instrument controlVMEGPIB
RS-232/422/482VXI
Sound & Vibration

Several cards have the same purpose but with different specifications i.e. DAQ cards We propose to keep multifunction cards with the highest capabilities
The idea of this catalogue is to give a best support to the recommended components
It will be established on yearly basis and will be updated according to new requirements and obsolete devices
Catalogue of recommended components

Shared knowledge base
Build a knowledge base for configuration & use People interested will be asked for examples, proven solutions, … EN/ICE will gather information from CERN users
A Web tool will be developed Examples of code for specific PXI cards Programming structures by app. area (RT, fast ACQ, multi cards trig.) Known issues / fixes Information about restrictive features or device behavior
This will not be a copy of the www.ni.com Only data to use or debug PXI systems No specifications or guidelines for selecting components

Critical spares identification
Define the critical spare parts, managed by EN/ICE Based on risk analysis & impact on accelerator availability
Criticality is different for a test bench & operational system Depending on the number of cards in use
On request also specific cards could be added to the spare list For chassis, controllers and cards
EN/ICE will buy and store these components They will be available for participating clients On demand a spare component will be delivered
The user will then refund EN/ICE to replace this component For operational systems the delivery could be done by SBS (24/24)

Support for recommended & critical systems
Monitoring tools (based on DIAMON or MOON)
Technical Support, through our actual LabVIEW support (Odd O. Andreassen, Cedric charrondiere, Alessandro Raimondo, Adriaan Rijllart, Hubert Reymond)
For obsolescent systems, proposal for staged update
Remote reboot (standard BE/CO solution)
Extended warranty from NI Discussions in progress
