Extensive Product RangeHOBAS has been an established supplier of pipe systems for various industrial sectors for several decades. Continuous further development and improvement in our product range ensure that our pipe systems meet the highest standards, for example in the paper and chemical industries, refineries, desalination plants, etc. Total solutions are available for instance for cooling water systems in power plants or for acid regeneration in steel pickling plants – from structural and hydraulic calculations through material selection to installation.

Given the various different requirements in the market segment, we have specialized in a wide range of applications, including wastewater pipes and process lines for industry. In order to supply complete systems to each individual customer's specifications, we not only manufacture pipes but also special components such as tanks and duct work in various designs. They consist of pipe sections, prefabricated thermoplastics, and GRP panels that are welded and securely laminated to each other.

We manufacture the stub ends, fixed, loose, and blind flanges required for flanged joints using sheet molding compound (SMC) and wet molding and hand lay-up processes. These fittings are also made of GRP and complete the extensive industrial product range from HOBAS.

SCC certification also guarantees comprehen-sive safety standards in installation. At the HOBAS TechCenter, which is itself certified to international standards (including ISO 17025 and a TÜV SÜD certificate), the products undergo extensive testing to verify compliance with the standard. One of them is the survival test based on ISO 14692. It serves to prove the HOBAS Industrial Pipe System’s resistance. Pressure fittings made of several pipe sections joined with laminates are subjected to 2.4 times the nominal pressure, e.g. 24 bar in the case of PN 10, for over 1,000 hours (just under six weeks). Showing no damage, HOBAS Quality Products even pass this endurance test with flying colors.

1 | Power Plant Construction

Cooling Water LinesAs the demand for energy is rising steadily in virtually every country around the world, more power stations are also being built. Many of them are combined cycle power plants (CCPP) which significantly reduce the consumption of primary energy carriers thanks to their high efficiency. Like in all thermal power plants, the cooling water system plays a key role in a CCPP's steam process. After the steam passes through the turbine, the cooling water causes it to condense and it can then be returned to the process.

HOBAS Industrial Products have excellent thermal properties and are also capable of withstanding adverse weather conditions. The combination of extremely stiff pipes for buried sections and custom spools for the above-ground parts of the pipeline enables HOBAS to supply complete system solutions for power plants that meet all the customer's needs. Eco-friendly trenchless installation and using HOBAS Pipes for marine outfalls is also a problem-free option.

2 | Metal Industry

Acid Regeneration in Steel Pickling PlantsPickling plants treat steel strip with concentrated hydrochloric acid. This process removes contamination and deposits from the steel strip, resul- ting in a consistently high quality surface finish.

Under the stringent environmental regulations and to achieve an efficient process, the acid used has to be recycled. In an acid regeneration plant, the hydrochloric acid is recovered from the pickle liquors and can thus be returned to the steel pickling process. HOBAS Industrial Products are highly corrosion resistant and therefore ideally suited to use in the metal industry. Pipelines and process equipment such as the scrubbers in acid regeneration plants are for example made from HOBAS Products.

3 | Lean Gas and Vent Pipes

Corrosion-Resistant PipelinesDuring many industrial processes, lean gases occur in various different compositions sometimes with corrosive properties. Only in corrosion-resistant pipelines can these lean gases be transported safely within the plant.

The HOBAS Industrial Pipe System has already proved its worth for this application in many industrial operations and is used for example in paper factories and waste-to-energy plants.

Sea Water DesalinationFresh water – regardless of whether potable or process water – is a rare and valuable resource. All too often people in dry coastal regions have to rely on treating sea water to meet their daily water requirements. In desalination plants salts are removed from the water using various pro-cesses. Sometimes they also produce useful by-products such as table salt (sodium chloride).

HOBAS Pipes are highly suitable for the intake and outlet pipelines in desalination plants. Highly flexible, the corrosion-resistant products can be adapted to the various requirements – large diameter and low pressure for outside pipes or small diameter and high pressure for inside pipes – and can transport salt water and brine safely for many decades.

h CC-GRP Cooling Water Pipes Employed for Combined Cycle Power Plant

In May 2011 the turnkey EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contracting partner, German Siemens AG, assigned

HOBAS for the design, production, delivery, and installation of an underground cooling water line for one of the world’s

most modern combined-cycle power plants (CCPP). Erected next to Statkraft’s existing power plant in Knapsack nearby Cologne in Germany, the plant is designed to have a gener-ating capacity of about 430 MW and an efficiency of almost 60 percent.

HOBAS GRP Pipes have been standing their ground regarding high performance and quality in a vast field of applications for more than half a century. This as well as the service and expertise HOBAS offers can be exemplified by a cooling water line project implemented in the context of the construction of Statkraft’s new combined-cycle power plant at the chemical park Knap-

sack in Hürth, Germany.

comprehensive quality measures and proof as well a rigorous group-wide quality management system that ensures unvarying high

quality at every single HOBAS Production Plant. A further advan-tage unique to centrifugally cast GRP pipes is the possibility to

apply the 1 mm thick vinyl ester internal pipe layer required by the client Siemens.

HOBAS from A to ZApart from stringent product tests on the pipes, bends, tees, and laminated joints which were conducted in-house as well as by independent experts such as the TÜV to verify compliance with standards and project require-ments, the job comprised an array of supplementary work such as planning, engineering, site management, instal-

lation, and the final pressure test. Furthermore, HOBAS attached great importance to adhering to waste disposal,

health, and safety measures not least due to accumulations in the soil from a former coking plant. Trained personnel and

instructions to the workforce in regard of these issues therefore formed a requisite part of the responsibilities at site.

Preparation and InstallationFor an exact installation of the cooling water line and optimal future service of the pipe, HOBAS made sure that the pipe trench and bedding were pre-pared strictly in accordance with standards and client requirements. Since the soft sandy soil of the terrain would easily wash out from beneath the pipe, geotextiles were used forming a gravel cushion beneath the pipe and to envelope several layers of backfill material. Every step was documented in detail.

Given the restricted space, parallel construction works and to keep weather-dependent lamination on site to a minimum HOBAS opted for just-in-time deliveries of prefabricated pipe spools. The 10 to 12 meter-long spools were one after the other aligned and joined by lamination respecting tight lateral, horizontal, and vertical tolerances of 25 to 30 mm per spool.

Site Inspections, Tests, and FinalizationStrict inspections and tests at site were conducted throug-hout the whole installation. Checkpoints along the line for instance served to double check the line’s correct position. Pipes as well as raw materials and joints underwent strict tests such 24 hour creep tests on pull-out drilled laminate cores by third party experts, and general inspection by the client in respect of dew point, bonding, hardness to Barcol, ovali-zation, general condition, etc.

Once the two parallel underground cooling water pipes were com-pleted and the trench backfilled end of November the HOBAS Pipe was ready to pass its final test: The hydro test that served to prove the pipes’ leak tightness and perfect bonding of the laminated joints lasted more than 70 hours to 1.1 times the design pressure. With this the job was successfully finalized to the complete satisfaction of the client who will consider HOBAS as reliable partner also in future industry projects. The CCPP was completed mid-2013 and is now supplying up to 500,000 households with electricity.

Omya is a leading raw material producer for the paper and plastics indus-tries. In the manufacturing process, carbon dioxide is used for processing the materials.

One of the Omya plants is located in Moerdijk in the Netherlands. At a neighboring power station, carbon dioxide is produced as a by-product and to make environment-friendly use of the gas it is piped from the power plant to the Omya facility. The pipeline made of HOBAS Industrial Pipes consists of some 1,000 m of centrifugally cast DN 300, 600, and 1200 pipes in pressure classes PN 1 through PN 6. Adapted to meet Omya's specifications, the pipes were tailored to the special chemical conditions. The outdoor pipeline is also resistant to temperature fluctua-tions and UV radiation.

It was installed in exposed areas on supports and pipe bridges. When it came to the color, HOBAS delivered the pipes in gray and white to cus-tomer specifications, ensuring that the industrial products comply with Omya's corporate identity.

Previously, the company had mainly used steel pipes. The centrifugally cast HOBAS Pipes however won over the client because they are easy to install, available in a choice of colors, and have many options for combin-ing them with other materials. Comprehensive technical advice and fast delivery on the part of HOBAS rounded off this successful project.

One of the world's largest and most advanced production lines for coated fine paper stands in Gratkorn in Austria. At this plant, Sappi produces up to 950,000 tons of triple-coated fine paper and 255,000 tons of totally chlorine free chemical pulp per annum. During the production process, lean gas consisting of air, water vapor, volatile organic compounds, SO2, and SO3 is released. These gases then undergo thermal treatment. When selecting the pipe material, the low pH and high temperature (90°C) of the gas therefore had to be taken into consideration. In addition, the pipes also have to be UV resistant as most of the pipeline runs outside the factory building.

HOBAS Industrial Pipes are corrosion resistant and thanks to the use of a UV-resistant resin ideal for this lean gas pipeline. We supplied a total of 140 m DN 700, PN 2.5 pipes in sections prefabricated at the factory, which were then joined on site with hand lay-up laminate.

The old pipeline was removed and the new one in-stalled. Confined space and a working height of up to 15 m were considerable challenges for the laminating work on site. As construction also had to be carried out while the plant was in operation and keeping to a very tight schedule, careful planning and efficient project management were extremely important here.

Due to an unexpected accident at the plant, the construction work had to be completed as quickly as possible. Instead of taking three weeks as origi-nally planned, the fitters and project managers worked so efficiently that the HOBAS Team managed to finish the job within 16 days – and the lean gas pipeline went back into operation earlier than hoped. Top quality, innovative products, and pro-fessional installation on site: HOBAS again showed great expertise in industrial pipeline construction in this project.

Beginning of December 2011, 18 workers from HOBAS Germany installed roughly 800 meters of HOBAS GRP Pipe with CPVC liner in the world’s biggest copper mine. The line has been completed within four days only and under extremely challenging working conditions in the Chilean Atacama desert 3200 m above sea level.

3200 meters above sea level in the middle of the Chilean Atacama desert lies Minera Escondida, the world’s biggest copper mine. Atacama is the driest desert as well as one of the regions with the most mineral reserves around the world. It makes Chile the richest country for copper on earth, with almost a quarter of the global reserves. This is why Chile is also the internationally leading copper producer – 5.42 million tons in 2010. As the copper prices multiplied by four and due to Asia’s great demand it seems that copper mining in Chile will be profitable also in the future.

Copper is won by various methods. One of those applied at Minera Escondida is the oxide method in which large areas of crushed rocks are treated with sulfuric acid. Pipes then transport the extracted copper sulfate to electrolysis that produces plates of pure copper. A total of one million tons of rock are daily moved and 20,000 people work at the mine. This and the long distances that need to be overcome over the vast terrain pose great challenges to logistics.

Material ChoiceThe medium, a high concentration of sulfuric acid and other chemicals at temperatures

around 50°C and above, makes high demands on the piping material. The client had initially filed a tender for pure CPVC-Schedule-80 pipes. However,

600 mm in diameter CPVC pipes installed on supports would have been very difficult to work on. Barbara Prommegger, Sales Director of

HOBAS Latin America, seized the opportunity and convinced the client that HOBAS Pipes would clearly be the better choice.

After a comparison of materials with comprehensive docu-mentation in Spanish as well as a presentation of and tests

on the material, that was new to the mine, HOBAS and the local partner Buildtek were assigned for the job in

February 2011. HOBAS delivered a total of 800 m of pipe with CPVC liner.

“Purely CPVC pipes would have weighed 97 kg per meter whereas HOBAS Pipes merely weigh 38. The wall thickness of CPVC would measure 31 mm which is difficult to weld and the design for HOBAS Pipes only requires 12 mm”, summarizes Barbara Prommegger. The GRP Pipes delivered by HOBAS have an internal chlorinated PVC layer and therefore withstand temperatures up to 80°C. Moreover, the outside pipe surface is extremely resistant; an important factor regarding the high concentration of acid in the fog prevailing in the hall during the process.

Production and InstallationThe pipes for the mine were produced in Germany and shipped to Antofa-gasta in Chile. Here a team of HOBAS Germany and Buildtek prepared as long as possible spools to be transported into the mine to minimize works in the mine. A standstill in the mine costs 1.5 million US-Dollars per day and the available installation time was therefore accordingly short.

The starting signal for the works was given beginning of December 2011. In record time of merely 4 days 18 welders and laminators of HOBAS Germa-ny installed 800 m of HOBAS Pipe welding and laminating almost 60 joints. The result is even more impressive in regard of the difficult conditions in the dessert. Neither the great variations in temperature nor the altitude, wind, dry air, or the for safety reasons very detailed paper work could stop the HOBAS Team. On the contrary: the job was finalized ahead of schedule and the project was a great success. “The client, partner, as well as all third-par-ty companies involved are impressed. The installation of a second section is already being planned”, says Barbara Prommegger rightly pleased with the first job from Chile.

The two combined cycle power plants (CCPPs) built by Siemens in Gönyü (Hungary) and Malženice (Slovakia) are the most advanced of their kind. It came as no surprise that Siemens requires top quality. BIS VAM Anlagentechnik contracted HOBAS for the supply of the cooling water pipeline to be installed above ground at both power plants. Pipes of diameters DN 25 through DN 1600 and an operating pressure of 5 bar were used for the project. The pipes with the very small diameter of DN 25 served as vents and drains and as intakes and outlets for instrument connections.

In Malženice the 80-m-long cooling water pipeline has a diameter of 1,200 mm, while in Gönyü DN 1600 pipes totaling 77 m in length were installed. What was important was that the pipes had to be designed for a possible vacuum of up to -0.9 bar and therefore had to be particularly resistant to buckling. Thanks to the flexible manufacturing pro-cess, the problem was solved quickly and cost effectively by mounting ribs on the HOBAS Industrial Pipes.

Cool Water for More Electricity

Above-ground h Cooling Water Pipelines in Hungary and Slovakia

Before starting manufacture, we analyzed the cooling water pipeline in detail so that we could come up with the optimal design. In addition to calculating structural loads, we also carried out stress analyses that reflect the forces occurring at various points in the pipeline. Work also involved taking all the possible load cases into account, such as water hammer, draining, earthquakes, or temperature fluctuations. As it is an exposed pipeline, our engineers were faced with the great challenge of developing a complete support concept that absorbs all the forces, thus enabling force-free connection to machine and equipment sockets.

A major part of the contract was installation on site. The sheer size and complexity of the power plant construction site meant that many different contractors were working on it at the same time. This required a high level of coordi-nation and exact deadlines for all the companies involved. Tailor-made for the experts at HOBAS: installing the pipes with the difficult route, many bends, and fittings under such pressure went very smoothly.

The eco-friendly CCPPs went into operation in 2010 and each now generates some two billion kilowatt hours of electricity per annum. They can thus supply the power required by up to 1,200,000 households.
