Industrial Revolution
• Began in Great Britain in the 1700’s.
• Brought about industrialism which was a new economic system that relied on the use of machinery, rather than on animal or human power.
Causes of the Industrial Revolution
• Change in how British landowners used the land
- Landowners enclosed lands and grew
large tracts of the same crop. This
allows for larger crops and more money.
- Often the land was used for pasture
to provide for sheep and cattle.
Causes of the Industrial Revolution
• Britain had a large number of people available to work in industry.
- The enclosure movement forced many peasants off the land - These people moved to the big industrial cities to work in the new factories. - Population grew in the 1700’s and more workers were available
Causes of the Industrial Revolution
• Britain had an abundance of natural
resources such as coal and iron.
- Coal was used for fueling the machines
used in the factories
- Iron was the main material used for
fabricating the machines
