SMALL IN SIZE – BIG IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP, EXPERTISE AND EXPORTSIn Central Ostrobothnia, local expertise, entrepreneur-

ship and internationalization are deeply rooted in history. Thanks to tar production and shipbuilding, the coastal areas of Ostrobothnia developed in the early 19th century into one of the most advanced and prosperous regions in Finland. At that time, Kokkola was said to be the second richest town in the country.

The tar trade, shipbuilding and the subsequent migration to America also gave the people in the region valuable in-ternational experience. Ostroboth-nians realized they could thrive just as well in St. Petersburg as in Stockholm and learnt to assimilate the lessons learnt abroad for use in their own endeavours.

These elements laid the foundation for the current success of Central Ostrobothnia. Small in size and population yet big in entrepreneurship, expertise and exports, it outperforms many larger players. The lim-ited size of the local market has been compensated by reaching out to the world markets and entering into cooperation with other companies engaged in the same business areas.

Central Ostrobothnia has also succeeded in striking a fine balance between large, export-driven companies and a strong base of local small and medium-sized firms. As a result, the region has weathered economic recessions and crises better than others. Unexpected hardships experienced by specific sectors or individ-ual companies, even if large, have been unable to seriously upset the regional economy.

Another integral part of the Ostrobothnian entre-preneurial culture is a high standard of quality. Do-ing one’s work properly in order to be able to take pride in it, is a point of honour for the local people. Remarkable enough, the tradition of quality down to the smallest detail has been successfully adopted by both small and big companies.

These long traditions and the spirit of entrepre-neurship as well as internationali-zation live strong in the backbone of modern, high-class industry of Central Ostrobothnia. Within the frames of this brochure is gathered a cross-section of some of the fin-est enterprises in the region today. Serving several fields of industries,

the unifying element for all is the constant drive to in-novate and support their industrial customers. I would like to encourage you to take some time, study these summary pages carefully, get excited, and find the best future partners amongst central ostrobothnian, tar trade tradition saturated suppliers of Industrial Services.

SOLID EXPERTISE IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING FINDS EXPRESSION IN MANY AREAS Kokkola is known as a centre of excellence in chemi-

cal engineering throughout Finland. Over a stretch of a couple of hundred of metres of a single street, it is possible to undergo the full circle of chemistry studies from vocational training to a PhD.

High-class training for mining professionalsSolid expertise in chemical engineering finds expression in many areas; for instance, the Central Ostrobothnia Adult Education Institute (KPAKK) trains most of the process engineering professionals working in the mining industry. Teemu Mäkinen, Mineral Processing Instructor at KPAKK, has educated process controllers for almost all Finnish mines. He is a much sought-after lecturer at other institutes of education as well as mining compa-nies throughout Finland.

“Mineral processing and precipitation. Those we mas-ter in Kokkola based on decades of experience. These skills can be refined for many uses,” stresses Mäkinen.

“The expertise we have in Kokkola is widely appreci-ated. Chemistry students flock to Kokkola from all over Finland,” says Laura Rahikka, lecturer at the Centria University of Applied Sciences.

Seamless partner networkProfessor Ulla Lassi, who holds the Chair in Chemistry at the Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius, places

great confidence in chemical engineering, a close-knit network and the power of cooperation.

“We’ve all been involved in creating a unique edu-cation path in chemical engineering in Kokkola. Here, chemistry can be studied at several levels, both on a full-time and part-time basis. For example, precision training tailored for mining companies is organised both at the adult education institute and the Centria University of Applied Sciences.”

Lassi underlines the importance of networks.“National and international contacts are vital for con-

tinual improvement. We’re closely involved in research and corporate cooperation, and in doing so we bring new knowledge and skills to Kokkola on a continuous basis.”

State-of-the-art testing environmentThe power of cooperation is also evident in the highly ad-vanced laboratory facilities available in Kokkola. Several major investments in equipment have been made jointly by the educational institutes. For example, a unique learning and testing environment is provided by Chemp-lant, a pilot-scale chemicals factory.

“It would be highly risky to apply the laboratory re-sults obtained on a test-tube scale directly to produc-tion. Chemplant serves as an intermediate step from laboratory to true industrial scale,” says Laboratory En-gineer Risto Puskala of the Centria University of Applied Sciences who is in charge of Chemplant.

Contract research is being carried out both in labo-ratories and at Chemplant on a continuous basis. This unique, high-end testing environment is available to all actors.

AN ISLAND OF GLOBAL COMPANIES

The Kokkola Industrial Park (KIP) is the largest hub of inorganic chemistry in the Nordic countries. While the

first factories started already in the 1940s, the most im-portant developments leading to the creation of today’s strong concentration took place in the 1960s.

“It’s hard to say whether the accumulation of large industrial facilities in Kokkola was a stroke of luck or due to the efforts of the local actors. At that time, there were a few major mines operating in the country and the policy was that the ores should be reprocessed in Finland. This created a need to establish zinc and co-balt plants,” says Jarmo Herronen, General Manager of Boliden Kokkola which is the second largest zinc plant in Europe.

He gives credit to the forward-looking efforts of the people in the ’60s.

“A sound foundation was laid at that time, wise deci-sions made and consideration given to the reprocessing of the by-products of the metals industry. It’s the fruits of those pioneering efforts that we can enjoy even to-day.”

One of Kokkola’s strengths lies in its advanced in-frastructure: an excellent port, efficient rail and road transport services, and quick flight connections. Finland

has provided a favourable operating environment – reli-able access to energy and things move ahead as agreed.

A strong tradition of getting things doneGeneral Manager Herronen is happy to note that in Cen-tral Ostrobothnia there is a strong tradition of getting things done and tackling issues head-on. Work and hard-working people have always been held in high esteem.

“As long as you work, you’ll do nicely!” Boliden is a group with international operations, Her-

ronen is accustomed to looking at things from a global perspective.

“An extensive range of services is a necessary prereq-uisite for our operations.”

Herronen says that KIP is an excellent test bed for actors offering their special expertise for large industrial customers.

“KIP is a strong island of globally operating compa-nies where service providers learn the rules and require-ments of global business.”

WEATHER IS ALWAYS FAIR IN THE PORT OF KOKKOLA!The Port of Kokkola boasts an All

Weather Terminal (AWT), the only one of its kind in Scandinavia and the largest in Europe. Bigger than a football field, the 32-meter high covered termi-nal represents a major investment in the further development of the port. At the same time, it is a great demonstration of Ostrobothnian boldness, the power of cooperation and a pioneering spirit.

Port Director Torbjörn Witting de-scribes the circumstances underlying the decision to build the AWT: “The starting point was highly pragmatic. At the end of the 1990s, we com-missioned a market survey to determine the direction in which the port should be developed. The finding was that the best option would be to work out a technical solution that would serve both bulk and container trans-ports. We hadn’t even heard of AW terminals when we came up with the idea that what we need is a roof over the port with a crane capable of handling containers.”

Bold constructionSteps were soon taken in Kokkola to go ahead with the project. The City Fathers were quick to identify the boldness and urgency of the project – not a word was breathed about it to anybody outside Kokkola before the final decision was made. It took only three years from the final investment decision to completion – the AWT was placed into service at the beginning of 2005.

“When we looked into the matter more closely, we found that one AWT was being planned in Europe at that time. It was to be constructed in a private port in Am-

sterdam and contacts for the exchange of information were soon established. The first thing they told was what not to do! Our frank cooperation has been very close ever since.”

Extremely successful investmentThe massive investment was divided into several projects: civil engineering works were carried out by Ab Tallqvist Infra Oy from Kokkola and the general contractor for the terminal building was YIT, as-

sisted by KL-Asennus which built the truss structure.Since coming into service, the AWT investment has

proved its worth in many ways. For several years now, Kokkola has enjoyed a regular container service to Ant-werp and the AWT has greatly enhanced awareness of the Port of Kokkola and the city.

“AWT continues to be a major attraction that all visi-tors definitely want to see.”

PORT OF KOKKOLAIn terms of tonnage, the Port of Kokkola is Finland’s:

- 1st largest raw materials port.- 2nd largest transit port.- 3rd largest port.

This environment-friendly method offers cost savings and preserves the landscape. The more challenging the task, the greater the effort that Dahlbacka makes to find a solution! The trenchless technique is also used for re-plumbing jobs: old cast iron, plastic and concrete pipes can be replaced by pipes up to be 50% greater in diameter than the original ones. Guided directional drilling: pipe diameters Ø 75–1000 mm, drilling length up to 800 m, installation depth 25 m.

Drilling under roads and rails in all ground conditions: Ø 139–1220 mm.• Laying of geothermal piping for a residential district under the seabed in Vaasa, Finland, total length 8,000 m• Laying of a high-voltage cable in a protective sheath under a lake in Kainuu, eastern Finland• Replacement of a cast iron water supply pipe across Seinäjoki Town: 1.5 km (in lengths of 150 m)

TEIJO-TALOT OY– leading the way in prefab housing Teijo-Talot houses are built indoors in the shelter of the factory. This means there is no building waste of any kind at any time on the client’s site. The only work done on the site is a crushed aggregate foundation and the usual water, power, sewage connections, etc. The house is delivered to the site as a wide load with the footings and everything.

Our unique way of building minimizes environmental impact because construction is orderly and all building waste is efficiently recycled. The water underfloor heating system allows the choice of almost any energy source.

Teijo-Talot houses have a long lifecycle since they are built from only the best, ecological materials capable of withstanding the wear and tear of life and testing weather conditions. A Teijo-Talo house may also be re-utilized to meet changes in life situation. It can be moved to a new location, be exchanged for a larger or smaller one. The building retains its value exceptionally well because it is not tied to one site.

After installation, an energy-efficient Teijo-Talo house is ready to move into. Our clients know exactly how much everything costs because each stage in the building process is completed inside the factory, thus ensuring no budget overruns.

AN UPBEAT REGION WITH A RESILIENT STREAKConductor Sakari Oramo sees Kokkola and Central

Ostrobothnia from a global perspective. As chief conductor for the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Oramo is a familiar sight conducting the world’s most famous orchestras, but his schedule also makes room for various projects in Kokkola. In autumn 2013, Oramo began work as Artistic Director of the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra.

Oramo believes that the strong entrepreneurial spirit of Ostrobothnia is apparent in its support of the arts. “In this part of Finland, it is not cus-tomary to expect any support from the state, foundations or sponsors. A home-grown entrepreneurial spirit encourages people to act boldly and take risks. People here are less in-clined to complain - when things get difficult, everyone stays positive and gets to work.”

Growing in fertile ground“Kokkola is a growth centre with rural surroundings – there is no major city nearby. To me, this is fertile ground for innovation. In larger cities, young people are easily sucked into conventional career paths. Here, peo-ple are motivated to create a new paradigm for success by crafting a new innovative livelihood in their home district.”

Chief Conductor Oramo says that the Ostrobothnian spirit is contagious. Although he can claim some Ostro-bothnian genetic heritage from his grandfather’s side, he

only grew to know the area properly through his native-born wife, the accomplished soprano Anu Komsi. “I im-mediately felt at home in Kokkola, it has always been a very welcoming city to newcomers.”

Maintaining a positive attitudeOramo is also one of the core founders of an ambitious opera project in the region: the West Coast Kokkola Op-era. An idea that appeared crazy at first has now flowered into an impressive string of superb opera productions.

“It is the collaboration of several world-class music professionals who wanted to bring something back to their hometown, in recognition of the good foundation they received. Countless hours of work has gone into the project, fired by the dauntless pioneering spirit of which I speak.”

Oramo is of the opinion that the Central Ostrobothnia region serves as a great springboard for persons in-

terested in pursuing music professionally. “The region is characterized by strong traditions, a vibrant cultural life, a positive atmosphere and a good attitude towards work. Many people from this area have risen to the top echelons of the international music scene, providing a great example and giving hope to future generations.”

This same spirit and tradition, along with the inspira-tion and will to innovate, is a strong illustration of the Central Ostrobothnian mentality and entrepreneurial spirit. Discover the courage to create something new!

“A home-grown entrepreneurial spirit

encourages people to act boldly and take risks.”

KOKKOLA LCC OY – specialist in laser coatingLaser Coating Centre (LCC) specialises in the manufacture of new laser-coated com-ponents and the renovation of used parts to make them as good as new.

LCC coatings are designed to prolong the service life of engineering components exposed to extremely aggressive environments. This is achieved using high power industrial lasers that apply a high performance coating to the areas subjected to wear and/or corrosion.

Laser coating offers substantial cost savings as the body of the product may consist of a lower-cost material which is then finished with a hard-wearing laser-applied coating. In laser coating, the heat supply is low enough not to cause warping or distortion typical of conventional welding while at the same time the laser-welded joint between the coating and the core material ensures that the coating adheres firmly to the surface.

Product sizes coated and manufactured:• Length 25 m • Weight up to 20 tonnes• Maximum diameter 3.5 m

KORSÖ BÅT LTD. – excellence in boat modeling and moldsKorsö Båt has more than 30 years’ of experience in boat design and construction. Recent years have seen the company’s strong expertise in 3D modeling and high-performance CNC milling machines respond increasingly more often to complex modeling needs also in other areas. Using 3D measuring equipment, Korsö Båt can also measure and make 3D designs, for example, for earlier made individual objects for which there is no documentation.

Korsö Båt has two large CNC milling machines that can be used to machine objects up to 15 m x 5.5 m x 2.3 m in size. The CNC milling machine first makes a 3D model of the object out of EPS, to which fiberglass is laminated and epoxy paste added to the surface. This creates the plug, which can then be used to make the mold needed in production.

The company is currently working on a direct molding process development project, which in time will enable the plug phase to often be by-passed. This will significantly improve cost efficiency and speed.

SK PROTECT OY– Professional Safety ManagerSK Protect Oy’s PRO24 safety management system takes corporate safety manage-ment to a new level – regardless of company size. PRO24 software is the result of long-term development and includes all areas of safety. Protect’s experts have a sound track record in safety and are fully aware of the legislation and regulations in their own specialist areas.

The PRO24 concept is based on a detailed definition of corporate customer re-sponsibilities and on risk assessments. When the areas of a company’s operations are entered into the database one point at a time, the same documentation can be used in all areas of safety and at different levels: workplace safety, rescue plans, chemicals, environmental aspects, buildings, etc. – all in the same system.

We can tailor, for example, customised department- or user-specific desktops. This means each employee has access to the key safety data relevant to his or her own work.
