As a preliminary stage of cyber-phys-ical systems, the magazine modulesof the module Engraving areequipped with compact CoDeSys-Controllers (effectuators) and Ether-net interfaces to achieve fullfunctionality and to also allow self-diagnosis. During the process, the in-telligent Festo handling modulesinitialize the digital product memoryvia RFID with a production order. Thisproduction order is loaded througha http-protocol by the web server ofthe higher-level ERP-Systems via anespecially developed web client. Ac-cording to the product memory, anindividual engraving is applied witha CNC engraving control, whichmeans that the production of per-

Workpiece magazines with controller

sonalized products is implemented atthe module level. An integrated OPCUA server guarantees the problem-free interaction of different modulesbeyond proprietary limits. In this way, information about plant topology,workpiece-specific energy consump-tion, and status messages is trans-ferred.

The presented, already available tech-nologies offer advantages even todayregarding the development of mod-ular and flexible production plants, and very clearly point the way to INDUSTRIE 4.0.

Short description of our contribution

The module Engraving unloads the base plate of the business card holder andapplies an individual engraving to it via a CNC-controlled miniature millingmachine. Afterwards, the engraved base plate is rotated and provided on aworkpiece carrier for the further manufacturing process.

Our implementation of INDUSTRIE 4.0

Festo joined the manufacturer-independent technology ini-tiative SmartFactory KL e.V. in2013. The membership en-ables Festo to closely cooper-ate with other industrialenterprises and the science, aswell as adding a high practicalvalue because now we havethe opportunity to test and de-velop the interaction of intelli-gent components fromdifferent manufacturers andalso their mutual networkingunder real conditions.

The broad application of IN-DUSTRIE 4.0 will require newqualifications over the nextfew years. Festo Didactic takesaccount of this fact by devel-oping and providing appropri-ate teaching and researchplatforms. The SmartFactoryKL

membership ensures therecognition of relevant con-tent and their integration intoprofessional training and edu-cation after being didacticallyprepared.

Continuous interface standardiza-tion is the basis for modularizationwithin the context of INDUSTRIE 4.0and, therefore, the key for smart fac-tories. HARTING faces this challengewith a module in its own form factor, which offers us the opportunity toderive the special module task froman existing modular system and toconsequently realize it. Furthermore, module design according to themodular principle involves an easyand especially fast integration, meaning interoperability, into theSmartFactoryKL.

A smart factory requires a genericmodule infrastructure. The Han-Modular® connector forms the

The interior of a Han-Modular® connector

electromechanical backbone. Oursmart Power Network Unit takes overthe management of data and powerand collects signals concerning theoperating status because only asmart infrastructure ensures the ad-ministration of all industrial lifelines.

Short description of our contribution

The HARTING module Force Fitting is the place for central assembly of the twocasing elements. Therefore, the base plate with a mounted RFID transponderand a holding bracket is provided from the adjacent module via integratedconveying systems. Through a robot, the HARTING module places the coveron the base plate and force fits the parts together.

Our implementation of INDUSTRIE 4.0

INDUSTRIE 4.0 is taking off.Summarized in one sentence,INDUSTRIE 4.0 leads to a trans-formation of today's factoriesinto smart factories.

Therefore, we are developingsolutions and testing themwithin the scope of smartfactories. The SmartFactoryKL

has a special status, because itoffers the possibility of compa-ring our competence withother providers. This not onlyresults in a higher degree of in-novation, but is also the basisfor the necessary standardiza-tion, because only in this wayinteroperability between diffe-rent automation modules canbe guaranteed. The client hasthe ability to select the manu-facturing module of the provi-der that is most suited to his orher needs, and that is alsomost effective at improvingtheir production efficiency.Furthermore, the integrationinto their own business IT ap-plications increases pro-duction flexibility. This requiresinterfaces like OPC UA, whichwe are testing in the scope ofthe SmartFactoryKL .

The Rexroth module Clip Mounting reads the product memory via RFID andautonomously takes over the mounting of a clip to the casing bottom of thebusiness card holder with the help of its decentralized intelligence. Throughopen core engineering, the open control of the module also performs functi-ons created in high-level languages and meets all the requirements of functio-nal safety.

Our implementation of INDUSTRIE 4.0

Rexroth already provides hard-and software for INDUSTRIE4.0-enabled automation solu-tions which are based on a de-centralized intelligence, opencommunication and program-ming languages. This allowsmachine manufacturers andusers to network automationhorizontally and vertically. With its module for the Smart-FactoryKL, Rexroth shows thatthe vision of INDUSTRIE 4.0 hasalready become reality. Besi-des technical standards, open-ness to Rexroth especiallymeans the willingness torealize completely new ideaswith users and machine manu-facturers in close partnership. Therefore, the technology ini-tiative SmartFactory KL e.V. of-fers the ideal platform.

For the development of cyber-physi-cal production systems, it is essentialto control the continuous use of in-formation and data across all stagesof development and added value.Cyber-physical production systems,in which individual production mo-dules independently organize andoptimize parts of production, needthe ability to simulate processes inadvance. Starting with a conceptual, digital modeling of the productionplant, every production system recei-ves in parallel with its real develop-ment stage, a virtual representationacross all development stages. Ascomplete digital data about theplant is provided to all decision ma-kers, concrete models for specificquestions to be simulated can be de-

rived at any time. Due to this ability offuture autonomous productionplants, the technological complexityin industrial added-value processeswill increase significantly comparedto today's level. The control of thiscomplexity requires the developmentof corresponding software tools forthe design and construction of suchsystems and plants and their opera-tion. According to this task, SIEMENSresearches and develops the metho-dologies and modeling techniquesneeded.

Short description of our contribution

In the infrastructure solution Product Lifecycle Management, all informationbecoming available during the product development process of the businesscard holder is seamlessly integrated into a coherent data structure. Due to thisconvergence, a superior platform is created which, as a central system of record, enables the support of diverse data needs.

Our implementation of INDUSTRIE 4.0

A fundamental part of our ac-tivities as the market leader inthe field of industrial automa-tion is the implementation ofan integrated engineeringprocess for our customers inthe sector of mechanical andindustrial engineering andtheir customers, e.g., in the au-tomotive industry. The task isthe implementation of the ap-proach of "Digital Enterprise",and SIEMENS develops andprovides the corresponding in-dustry software. The INDUS-TRIE 4.0 brought this issueback into focus. Therefore, thetechnology initiative Smart-Factory KL e.V. offers a verygood demonstrator and re-search platform to illustrate aclearly practical and gradualimplementation. It is ab-solutely essential that long-term development andmodification, which come veryclose to real conditions, are in-tended.
