    Definition The Plant Nurseries industry consists of

    businesses mainly engaged in propagatingand growing ornamental plants, plants fortransplanting into gardens (such asseedlings or young fruit trees) or bulbs.

    This includes the collection and planting ofseeds or bulbs, the growing of plants and

    the sale to retail or wholesaleestablishments, landscapers, or toproduction horticulture (such asorchardists).

    STATUS OF DOMESTICMARKET

    Their production capacity rangesbetween 1 million to 5 million andabove plants per annum with anaggregate production capacity of 180

    million plantlets per year. Most of these tissue culture units are

    GOVERNMENT SCHEMESAND INCENTIVES

    Various Central and State Governmentdepartments have framed financialschemes and announced incentives

    for assistance tissue culture industrywhich are summarized below:

    Under the Integrated Development ofFruits scheme assistance is given forpurchase of planting material under

    the area expansion programme for

    Rs 7 000/hectare for plants of

    Rs. 7,000/hectare for plants ofguava, Amla, Date Palm, Plum Peach,Bes, Fig and citrus

    Rs.10,000/hectare for plants ofmango, almond, pomegrante, apple,nuts, apricot, olive, papaya, litchi and

    sapota. Rs. 30,000/hectare for plants for

    Bananas and pineapples.

    Rs. 70,000/hectare for plants ofgrapes and strawberry.

    In addition, 50% subsidy is given to the

    farmers for purchase of tissue culture

    .(NHB)

    The mandate of NHB is to promote

    integrated development ofHorticulture and to help incoordinating, stimulating and

    sustaining the production andprocessing of fruits and vegetables.

    For setting up of a new tissue culture

    lab there is a provision for back-ended capital subsidy not exceeding20% of the project cost with a 13maximum limit of Rs. 25 lakh per

    The states of Karnataka, Gujarat,

    Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh aregiving financial assistance for settingup tissue culture labs under the new

    agro industrial policy. Karnataka gives capital subsidy of

    20% on investments in setting up

    tissue culture unit whereas thesubsidy is 6% in Gujarat.

    Maharashtra gives a subsidy onpower consumption and

    Some nationalized banks like CanaraBank has opened a special cell forfinancing high tech agriculture

    projects.

    It is recommended that the aboveincentives provided by Central, Stategovernments and financial

    institutions etc., could be availed by

    Proper management of operations byselecting alternatives for costlyinputs and thrust on developing

    indigenous varieties with enhancedtraits would definitely improve thesustainability of the tissue culture
