REACH Anniversary REACH (Redwood

Empire Air Care Heli- copter, Santa Rosa, Calif.), which provides 24-hour VFR/IFR emergency air ambulance service throughout Northern California, recently cele- brated its fifth anniversary.

REACH has performed over 2,200 incident-free scene and interhospital patient transports in its Agusta 109 helicopters over the past five years. A unique feature of REACH is its flexible staffing, which allows for the use of

physician flight crew when indicated. Standard staffing is nurse/paramedic.

REACH is the only heli- copter air ambulance program in Northern Cali- fornia which performs flights under known IFR conditions. REACH has the capability to do so because its helicopters are single- pilot IFR certified, and its pilots are IFR-rated and current.

REACH recently added a second single-pilot IFR Agusta 109 helicopter to its fleet.

REACH'S fixed-wing counterpart, Mediplane, operates a medically dedi- cated Cessna 421C airplane that Derforms emergent

and non-emergent patient transports throughout the Western United States.

Helicopters Inc. (Provo, Utah) has announced that its AllStar model helicopter is now available through- out North American with a gross weight increase of 330 pounds.

EMS and external load missions. The increased lifting power also allows the seven-place seating configuration to be a promising and viable option for both tour and utility operators.

Steep Angle Research The FAA has contracted

with FlightSafety Inter- national (New York, N.Y.) for the use of one of the company's Dash-8 simula- tors for research into the procedures appropriate for steep angle MLS approach- es. The simulated flights will assist the FAA in col- lecting Terminal Instru- ment Procedures (TERPS) data for approaches using a Microwave Landing System (MLS).

A Level "C" Dash-8 sim- ulator will be MLS-equip- ped for the tests at the FSI Seattle center. It will be

used to create a resource for the development of spe- cial performance aircraft MLS TERPS criteria. The simulator information and additional aircraft flight tests will form the database for the design of safe steep angle (greater than 3 degrees) approach proce- dures to the MLS-equipped airports.

The tests will be con- ducted with approximately 20 two-pilot crews. They will examine issues relat- ing to landing after a steep angle approach such as necessary piloting tech- niques and dispersions during such landings.

FlightSafety will collect the test data for the FAA and ship the tapes to the FAA Technical Center in Atlantic City for analysis.

Many training programs for the FAA are entrusted to FSI. The company trains hundreds of FAA nilots

each year for a wide variety of aircraft programs.

porting more than 250,000 people living within a 150- mile radius of the hospital's campus. The 141-bed facili- ty has inaugurated its air medical operations as "Air Care 1" serving the four corners southwestern region, including portions of New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado.

The initiation of service at San Juan Regional Medical Center marks the first introduction of medi- cal helicopter service in this region of America. Air Methods has provided the hospital with pilots and mechanics to operate an Instrument Flight Rules (IFR)-certified Bell Long- Ranger (206L-3) heli- copter in connection with this program. This long- term contract represents significant potential rev- enues for Air Methods.

Compliance Kit

: i

The Universal Pre- caution Compliance Kit, recently introduced by Armstrong Medical Industries, provides the supplies necessary for per- sonal protection against HIV (AIDS virus) and HBV (hepatitis B) as recom- mended by OSHA and the CDC. For all workers who may be in contact with blood-borne pathogens, this kit contains everything necessary to clean up spills.

All contents are contained in one sealed bag for easy storage and quick access. Complete personal protec- tion is offered for fast, safe clean-up of spills.

The Universal Precau- tion Kit contains RED-Z TM

solidifier. RED-Z is ideal for use on potentially infec- tious spilled bodily fluids such as blood, urine, vomit, and feces. It will quickly solidify and assist in the safer handling, trans- portation, and disposal of aqueous fluids.

Two-In-One Using revolutionary new

technology, Nellcor has created an ultra-efficient combination pulse oxime- ter and capnograph. The

ULTRA CAP TM monitor combines Nellcor's well- known pulse oximetry with the most advanced CO2 monitoring available, to offer you unsurpassed accuracy and reliability. Nellcor designed the ULTRA CAP monitor using miniaturized mainstream technology, which pro- vides excellent moisture resistance, even in high humidity environments. The CO2 sensor is remark- ably small, lightweight, and easy to use; it requires minimal warm-up time and no routine calibration.
