IT’S A GREAT TIME TO BE IN INDY.

We live in a city of promise — where engagement in the city is part of the job. Where one can come from a different part of the country or world — or have lived in the city for their entire life — and still effortlessly make this place home.

As IndyHub enters its second decade of service, I’m as optimistic as ever about our city’s future. Our network of 20- and 30-somethings have shown how deeply they care about the direction of our city and are active in the pursuit of progress.

We see engagement in the city as a journey — one that is unique to each person. For the family considering a move to Indy, it’s discovering their perfect community through a quiz on NoMeanCity.com. For the more established professional, it might be direction to a board or introduction to a committee working on city policy. For the person early in her career, it might be Passport to the Arts or IndyVolved, where she can experience Indy and meet new friends. For the person trying to switch careers, he can develop new talents and boost his resume through service as a volunteer.

Our team wakes up every day ready to help our peers experience and thrive in Indy. Our volunteers engage at all levels of the organization, from event support to strategic direction. As an IndyHub investor, you play the critical role of increasing our capacity, connections and resources to reach even more individuals.

IndyHub is proud to be the first, second and third point of contact for this sought-after audience. We are honored to serve Indianapolis as the hub of activity for newcomers, citizens and our 20- and 30-something professionals hoping to make a life and a difference in Indy.

Because there is no more important piece of our city’s economic development plan than ensuring we have a strong pipeline of dedicated, smart and active talent.

OUR WORKIndyHub is an advocate and resource for 20- and 30-somethings and in the past decade has facilitated tens of thousands of connections between individuals and efforts to affect positive change in Indianapolis. Today, IndyHub’s biennial research guides this work and helps to articulate the priorities of this generation with government and business leaders, city builders and investors.

STRATEGIC PLANWith support from Lilly Endowment Inc., IndyHub conducted in 2014 a strategic assessment with our community partners and investors. The work continued into 2015 as board members, key volunteers and staff outlined a plan for IndyHub’s future.

The following is our 2016-2018 Strategic Plan, as adopted by IndyHub’s Board of Directors. We’re excited to share this roadmap with you.

GOAL 1

National accolades for Indy are pouring in. In April 2016, Forbes gave Indy a top 10 nod for the cost of living and job growth opportunities for young professionals.

Acknowledgments like these don’t happen overnight. For more than a decade, IndyHub has worked with thousands of 20- and 30-somethings as they descend upon our city. Whether they arrive by way of a state university or halfway around the world, young adults expect and demand a welcoming and accessible city.

Key Strategies1. Provide resources to help Indianapolis employers recruit and

onboard new interns and young professional employees.

2. Work with colleges and universities within a 50-mile radius of Indianapolis to help them connect students with this community and its employers.

3. Align No Mean City and IndyHub strategies to help new young residents connect easily to the neighborhoods, amenities and civic spaces that will make them feel at home.

4. Host quarterly networking events focused on a variety of industry sectors to onboard new arrivals to the city and its offerings.

Progress Made in 2016IndyHub, in collaboration with our city’s best advocates, launched No Mean City, a citizen’s guide to community, culture, schools and housing in Indy. Through the web platform and print publication, authentic stories of 30 Indy neighborhoods are told through resident narratives and beautiful photography that pulls readers into the place. On the website, photography, videos, interactive quizzes and additional resources connect No Mean City users with real-time housing inventory and school options in Marion County.

GOAL 2

IndyHub believes in the power — and magic — of making meaningful connections. Success is helping an individual tap into their love for Indy through our vibrant neighborhoods and fulfilling opportunities to be involved.

Onboarding to Indy becomes easier with accessible and focused programming that emphasizes meeting people and places. This is a well-honed retention strategy that results in a city full of civically engaged and interested citizens.

Key Strategies1. Reimagine Passport to the Arts to include a broader array

of experiences and venues.

2. Develop partnerships with other community organizations that have compelling offerings for 20- and 30-somethings.

3. Identify and nurture young professional leaders in their civic engagement journey.

Progress Made in 2016A vibrant arts scene is a serious asset to any city. IndyHub’s Passport to the Arts program works to build audiences by engaging 20- and 30-somethings with easy access points to experience vibrant and intimate arts experiences in Indy. Since 2007, IndyHub’s Passport to the Arts has generated 924 unique subscribers. Now in Season 9, the program continues to reduce barriers to the arts through personal engagement and education via an ever-changing, three-show lineup now offered twice a year, winter and fall.

The LAB is a platform to unite the millennial voices of young leaders in arts, civic and social young professional groups in Indianapolis, collectively brainstorming how their organizations can tackle issues facing our city. The LAB relaunched in 2016 with an intentionally curated slate, and is revived from earlier efforts of IndyHub’s Presidents Roundtable and The Exchange.

Engage the diverse 20- and 30-something population with each other and with the Indianapolis community.

GOAL 3

Any city has room for growth. In Indy today, that work includes improving education and our public transportation system, and demanding public policy that fosters a welcoming community for all.

Key Strategies1. Advocate with government, employers and community

leaders about policy and legislative issues that affect 20- and 30-somethings.

2. Provide regular forums for 20- and 30-somethings to engage each other in constructive dialogue about a variety of issues.

3. Conduct market research about 20- and 30-something needs and interests and disseminate data to affect change that helps them become more connected and engaged with the community.

Progress Made in 2016IndyHub played a critical role in advancing the successful Marion County Transit Referendum in the 2016 general election. Building upon participation in the 2015 Transportation Innovation Academy, IndyHub joined the grassroots advocacy efforts of Transit Drives Indy. Director of Development & Operations Karissa Hulse, played a significant role in crafting messages and engaging IndyHub’s network through a new IndyHub signature program, The Dinner Series. More than 200 people got on the bus and took part in conversations about the need to invest in connecting more Indy residents with opportunities for economic success and greater quality of life. Equipped with knowledge and resources, they became informed voices — and voters.

Ensure 20- and 30-something perspectives are infused into conversations about critical issues facing the Indianapolis community.

A successful organization must be willing and committed to constantly assessing their relevance, efficiency and potential to progress.

Key Strategies1. Invest in technology solutions to track organizational data and allow

staff to work more efficiently.

2. Strengthen the board’s skill at governance and leadership.

3. Expand staffing to support expanded impact.

Progress Made in 2016IndyHub invested in a Customer Relationship Management system and added two staff members to the team. Ashley Miser, Community & Events Manager, has been instrumental in fine-tuning and executing our programs and engaging new individuals in our network and the city. Laura Granieri, Communications Manager, manages IndyHub’s and No Mean City’s digital presence, engaging both current and future residents with opportunities to be involved. These investments will allow IndyHub’s mission-focused work to prosper as we expand the breadth and depth of our engagement with individuals and community organizations to advance Indianapolis.

Grow IndyHub’s capacity to achieve greater impact for 20- and 30-somethings and the broader community.
