BestManagementPractices encourage the disposal of pharmaceuticals which are nothazardouswastebyincinerationatafacilitypermittedtoacceptnon-hazardous pharmaceuticals. They should not be placed into red sharps containers as these may be treated by methods other than incineration. Segregation into a dedicated non-hazardouspharmaceuticalcontainerinsurestheirdisposalbyincineration.

CaliforniaDepartmentofPublicHealthrequires the segregation and incineration ofwastepharmaceuticalsthatarenotfederallyregulatedunderRCRA.Thesemustbeincinerated at a medical waste treatment facility.

Source segregation is very important. Factors in choosing the appropriate glove material include the procedure being performed, the protection level required, the potential for contact withbodyfluidsandexposuretobloodbornepathogens,possiblereactionstoglovematerialsorcomponents,andglovepowdercomplications. Glovematerialstrengthanddurabilityshouldbeappropriateforthetask(s)andtheirassociatedrisks.Also,glovesshouldfitsnugly,butbecomfortable. Understandingthedifferencesbetweenlatex,nitrileandsyntheticbarrierpropertiesandmaterialstrengthswillhelpyoumaketherightglovechoice.

NITRILE

Acrylonitrile butadiene, a synthetic co-polymer.

Nitrile exhibits strength, elasticity and resistance to a wider range of chemicals than vinyl or latex, offering excellent barrier protection.

Excellent strength and puncture resistance. Minimum ASTM tensile strength is 14 MPa.

Medium to High, conforming to the user’s hand with use. Minimum ASTM requirement for elongation is 500%.

Highly resistant to punctures and tears. Once punctured, tear is visible and easily propagated. Reported in-use failure rates range from 1% to 3% (one study).

Good to Excellent with a variety of common chemicals.

Recommended in ONS guidelines. No other documented guidelines to date.

Water-based and petroleum-based.
