Three music videos which have influenced our project…

Syma Rahman; Group 24

Page 2: Influences

First music video is Sandi Thom – I Wish I Was a

Punk RockerI really enjoyed this music video. I think the main thing I liked about definitely the editing; although there are no cuts and different shots in the video, Sandi Thom sings but really fast, so in editing they speed it up. So when the final product is showing, everything else is slowed down, but her singing. This is something I would like to in cooperate in my music video. In some parts, they reversed it, so they made the whole thing faster but made her sing slowly, so it fit.Where in the music video is this present? - 0.09 – 0.28; 1.06 – 1.26 - Reversed; 0.40 – 0.50; 1.41 – 1.54

Sandi Thom – I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker

Another thing I liked about the music video is that even though Sandi Thom remained the centre of attention within the music video, behind her there were other performers conveying the lyrics. They used Andrew Goodwin’s theory of Illustration.

Check in the next slide to find out where in the music video this is present..

0.33; Thom sings “When the head of state didn’t play guitar”, there is a man behind her playing the guitar.

0.35; she sings “When not everyone had a car”, there are two people behind her riding bikes -Amplification or Illustration?

0.54; the chorus is “revolution was in the air” there are protestors behind her with posters.

1.41 to 2.41, all the performers who were in the music video follow her to the park and continue to dance. I would like to incorporate this in my music video, but not this way. It is not a whole load of people but a couple of boys following our artist.

Second music video is Madonna – Material Girl

I asked my mother what she thinks about our song choice and she said to use Madonna’s old songs as influence. Watching Material Girl is literally portrays what we want to show; a girl getting everything she wants, surrounded by guys, but still staying classy.

Page 7: Influences

Madonna – Material GirlDuring the music video, Madonna dismisses boys and takes cash and jewellery of the boys. This shows that she gets everything she wants and is interested in materialistic things not boys. This is what we want our performer to convey in music video.

Page 8: Influences

Madonna – Material GirlI really liked the mise en scene in the music video. Its set in a studio maybe, but it is really elegant and sophisticated. Also the way they are dressed is very formal and smart, looks like they’re going to award show. The men are wearing suits whilst Madonna is wearing a elegant, long, pink dress. This would connote diva-ness and femininity. Also fur and chandeliers represent a lavish lifestyle, something a diva would have.

Third music video is Rita Ora – R.I.P

This music video has a good range of shots and angles, some of which I will definitely use in my music video. There is a shot in there which I really love and I think if we had it in our music video, people will definitely link it to this music video.Rita Ora has various gold jewellery and poses and holds it in her mouth, showing her trademark red lips. This shows that Rita has the best and deserves the best. It is also her trademark to wear this kind of jewellery, so when we present our artist we want her trademark to be lavish things such as pearls, red lips, fur, etc.Next slide shows this…

Rita Ora – R.I.PAs I mentioned I really like the shot ranges in the music video.

03:27; I really liked this shot as there is a silhouette of her dancing behind her. There is one strand of light reflected on her to show a dark side of her. Her choreography also goes with the beat, which is crucial for a music video.

03:47; I want to use this in my music video. In this shot, Rita is walking away from the camera. I want to use this when we pretend the camera is a guy and our performer is dismissing him.

Overall…Sandi Thom – I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker; everything I mentioned I liked in the music video and will contribute to my music video. However, Sandi Thom’s performance let me down. Although she was good at slowing her singing, there were some parts where the lip synching did not work for her; 01:20.

Madonna – Material Girl; this is the main video in which we will look for inspiration. The mise en scene, choreography, performance and setting will contribute to our music video. There is one thing I dislike about it is that it is quite cheesy. My group and I will make sure that our music video is not cheesy. Another thing I disliked is that it told a story before the actual music video played. People should just focus on the music.

Rita Ora – R.I.P; this has iconic shots and mise en scene in which people will recognise within a second. This would add some positive recognition to our artist. The style of Rita Ora will be a definite inspiration to our artist due to the same hair, make up, style and presence.
