What is Influenza A (H1N1) ? Influenza A (H1N1) is a group of influenza

viruses.The current swine flu which is infecting

people is a new strain – influenza A/H1N1. Not certain how it developed/ mutated.

What is the current Influenza A(H1N1) virus status?

CDC/WHO have determined that this virus is contagious and is spreading from human to human.

On June 11, 2009, WHO raised the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 6

A level 6 alert means the disease has become widespread globally (pandemic)

The disease has spread to more than 70 countries with about 27,000 infections.

1st Local Transmission A 17-year-old girl admitted to the Kuala Lumpur

Hospital has been identified as the first locally transmitted A(H1N1) case in Malaysia. on Wednesday, 17th June.

The teenager had not visited any of the countries where a flu pandemic had been declared.

Investigations revealed that the girl had contact with the 12th case that was confirmed on June 13.

Disinfect surfaces (eg: surfaces in the bathroom, children’s toys, phone handles, doorknobs) with a disinfectant.

Disinfected eating utensils in a dishwasher or by hand with detergent and sanitizer.

Wash linens (such as bed sheets and towels) by using household laundry soap and tumble dry on a hot setting.

Wear gloves when handling dirty laundry.

Throw away tissues and other items used by the suspected person.

Linens, eating utensils, and dishes belonging to those who are suspected should not be shared without disinfecting thoroughly first.

Cleaning & sanitation of utensils and hardware to be done more frequently

Use gloves to dispose used tissues and similar waste

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth

Avoid direct contact with people who are sick.

Avoid sneezing or coughing without covering your mouth

Avoid shaking hands, hugging and kissing while greeting

Avoid “hugging” laundry prior to washing it to prevent contaminating yourself.
