Dear prospective parents and pupils

We are delighted that you are considering Culford School for your child’s future education. Our

prospectus and web site will give you a flavour of what Culford has to offer but by far the best

way to decide whether this is the right school for you is to come and visit us.

We are always delighted to arrange private visits. At the Senior School you will have the

opportunity to meet the Headmaster, a Housemaster/mistress and a Deputy Head as well as have

a tour of the school with a current pupil. At the Prep and Pre-Prep Schools you will meet the

Head and other members of staff and enjoy a comprehensive tour of the school.

You are also welcome to attend an Open Morning; these are held throughout the year. Many

prospective families choose to attend an Open Morning initially and follow this up with a private

visit. Taster days for day and boarding pupils may also be arranged.

We strongly encourage all prospective families to contact the Admissions Office on +44 (0)1284

385308 or email [email protected] to arrange a visit.

This booklet contains information about how to apply for a place at Culford School and we hope

that it answers many of your initial questions. However, we are always pleased to help with any

specific queries that you may have, either in person or over the telephone.

We hope that you will choose to visit Culford soon; you will receive a very warm welcome.

Yours faithfully,

Dave Watkin

Young people of all nationalities are welcome at CulfordSchool with boarding places available from the age ofseven. Approximately 15% of pupils at Culford comefrom overseas to board each year. Most pupils come toCulford for full-time courses, but it is occasionallypossible for stays of three terms or less to be arranged.

Entry requirementsInternational applicants will sit aptitude tests andexaminations in English (EAL) and mathematics, to testgeneral intelligence and ability to cope with academicstudy in English, and all pupils will be required toproduce current school reports and references.

Candidates may sit Entrance Examinations at theircurrent school, or by other arrangement, subject tosupervision and appropriate examination conditions. Theschool will organise a telephone or Skype interview.

Where possible, prospective pupils are encouraged tovisit Culford and to meet with the Headmaster andDirector of Studies.

EAL provision All pupils for whom English is an additional language areassessed prior to and also upon entry to the School.Pupils must be able to access the curriculumindependently in the classroom; to facilitate this, pupilsare provided with individually tailored curricula to suittheir specific needs and aptitude.

Teachers are regularly trained in EAL differentiationmethods and we also have three specialist teachers whooffer individual or group support lessons which are eitherembedded in a pupil’s timetable or offered on awithdrawal basis or arranged before or after school.Supported reading is also provided.

At ages 13 and 14+ pupils are prepared for theCambridge English examinations. At age 15+ pupils areprepared for IGCSE English and at age 16+ pupils maybe prepared for IELTS.

At the Prep School, EAL provision is available on a smallgroup or a one-to-one basis by arrangement and at anadditional cost. Pupils are taken out regularly on culturaltrips.

These lessons are charged at extra cost, details of whichmay be found on page 22.

GuardiansAll overseas pupils are required to have a Guardian wholives in the UK. This person will be responsible for thepupil during short holidays when he/she may choose notto go home and in special circumstances when he/shecannot stay at school. The requirement for a Guardianmay be waived by the Headmaster in exceptionalcircumstances. The Guardian may not be a student.

Culford School will only admit pupils whose educationalneeds can be adequately met. The educational interestsof the child are at the forefront of our selection process.

It is a general principle, therefore, that Culford School willonly admit a pupil in the belief that they will qualify forthe next stage of their education within the school.

Making such judgements may be difficult, particularly atyounger ages, and on occasion there may be pupilswithin the school who do not qualify for transfer to thenext part of the school or make sufficient academicprogress. Any decision to refuse such progress, however, will be made:

• with timely, documented and open discussions withthe parents

• with regard to the best educational interests of thechild concerned

Parents whose children are admitted with suchreservations will be written to formally informing them ofthe likelihood of progression to the next stage ofeducation.

Culford reserves the right, in consultation withparents/guardians, not to offer places to those whom itconsiders would not benefit from the school’s education,or whose presence might have a detrimental effect onother pupils.

Admission responsibilityIn all cases the Head of the relevant school is responsiblefor deciding to admit or refuse entry to a pupil.

Where such a decision is to be challenged by the parentsthe normal complaints procedure of the school should befollowed. The point of first appeal with regard to entry tothe Pre-Preparatory and Preparatory Schools is to theHeadmaster of the Senior School and, in the last resort, beyond him to a panel of the Governors. An appealagainst the refusal to admit a pupil to the Senior Schoolmay be made to a panel of the Governors in the firstinstance and, beyond that, to a panel consisting of theChairman of Governors and a representative from theMethodist Board.

Admissions policy
