AGE OF
AQUARIUS Tie-dyed clad Elaine
and Robert Kaufman
greeted flower
children, hippies and
war protestors arriving
at the February 23rd
party in our versatile
clubhouse.
Delicious appetizers along a multitude of
sandwich choices and salads gave everyone
the energy they needed to dance to the music
of one of Longboat Harbour’s popular
entertainers, Daniel Fugazzotto. Daniel played
60’s music along with favorites including “The
Cupid Shuffle” where Stuart Sinai was
surrounded by LBH’s beauties on the dance Gwen Wallin & Gretchen Burns
floor. The bar was tended by Jim Gaffney, Brian Doherty,
Ken Comeforo, Tom Drugan, Gwen Wallin and Gretchen
Burns. In addition to beer, wine, soda and water, spiked
sparkling seltzers in assorted flavors were served.
The costume contest proved difficult to judge with so
many brightly colored participants. Jan Vanguard was
chosen as Best Female. Fortunately for doobie toking Bob
Mazurek, the police weren’t called as he accepted his
prize for Best Male. The best/cutest couple award went to
Janice and Brian
Doherty. “Make
Love not War”
protesters, Marie
and Bob Munoz
were voted most
creative. Special
thanks to
Christina Filkins

all who
attended, Delphina and her daughters, Rosemary and
Katherine, for their help in the kitchen and to Gail
Gilvey and Graham Sampson for organizing another
wonderful party. Gretchen Burns

“BINGO”: FUN FOR ALL AGES Each week new people arrived at the Recreation Hall
on Tuesday night to participate in BINGO swelling to
72 players with a cash prize of $35.00 at the grand
finale on March 12th. Big winners this season were
Barbara Darvin, Sue Martin (Rollovers), Barbara and
Bob Lipper (3 games and a carwash coupon in one
evening), Lea Ann Rosenthal (2 games and 2 extra
gifts in one evening) and Art Stefanski and daughter
Susan (2 games in one evening).
January 29th proved to be
a challenging evening for
caller Ken Simpson when 6
players shouted “Bingo” for
one game. On February 19th,
due to Presidents’ Week, it
was great to have some kids
in attendance, the youngest
being Emmaleine and Brendon
from Boston (grandchildren of
Ginger and David Driscoll). Some
guests arrived on the evening of
Mardi Gras sporting decorative
masks as our hostess, MaryAnn
Simpson, handed out colorful beads
to all.
As the Bingo season came to a
close, it is very clear that Mary Ann and Ken Simpson, with
help from Bob “The Banker” Silver, Vanna Sue Silver, and
Checker Pat Geraci complete with delicious pastries from the kitchen of our
favorite baker, Donna Birnbaum, had reached their goal of providing “an
opportunity for social interaction with neighbors.” Can’t forget to mention all the
fun too! Thanks to Gretchen Burns and Maureen Shea for their pastry delivery
service each evening.

It was great to have our hard-working Recreation Committee chairs, Gail Gilvey
and Graham Sampson, join us
for our final evening. If you
did not follow my advice in
last year’s article to free your
Tuesday night schedule from
late January to mid-March,
you missed many nights of fun
and camaraderie.

A HOLE IN ONE John Bock hit his driver off the tee on Hole #3 at
Manatee County Golf Course and guess what? A
hole in one (John insists he also got an eagle), the
first of either in his life. There were lots of
congrats and drinks all around at the Lazy Lobster
on Sunday, March 31.

ITALIAN NIGHT AT LbH More than 120 LbH residents
gathered in the Club House for
an evening celebrating Italian
culture and food. As guests
arrived, our hosts, Gail Gilvey
and Graham Sampson, chairs of
the Rec Committee, greeted us.
Our friendly
bartenders, Ken
Comeforo, Brian
Doherty and Ken
Euerle whose pizza
hat was perfect for
the evening’s
theme, poured red
and white wine. Next stop was a lovely
antipasto followed by a scrumptious
Italian dinner: lasagna, sweet and hot
sausage and peppers and lots of other
goodies from the “old country”. We were serenaded by “Fire and Ice” and after
dinner danced to our hearts content. Mary Bock

FEDERATION REPORT The Federation of Longboat Key Condominiums had its
beginnings here at Longboat Harbour on August 18,
1973 when there were fewer than a dozen
condominiums on the entire Key. Sid Ochs, one of our
early leaders, was First Vice President and the whole-
hearted participation of LbH people have been an
integral part of the organization ever since.
The purpose of the Federation is to encourage and promote a mutual
understanding and appreciation of common problems, to advise and assist one
another in their solution, share ideas and information and to sponsor
programs/activities for the protection and improvement of the general welfare of
the condo unit owners among the condominium owner associations of Longboat
Key. Today, more than 75 of the Key’s condominiums are members of the
association and this membership represents a very significant proportion of the
island’s population.
The March meeting of the association was another in
the long list of sessions intended to help board
members and managers to understand how seaside
buildings are different from those up north. That our
buildings have more than the usual threats was the
topic. Attacking the problems, it was pointed out,
requires a systemic approach. The March meeting also
saw the election of Margie Clarke to the association’s
board, continuing a long series of Longboat Harbour
people playing important roles in the group’s affairs.
As well, Bonnie Coughlin replaced Bart Wassmansdorf
as Nominating Committee Chairman, a post he had
held for several years.
In February, the meeting featured two topics. The first being an update of the Gulf of Mexico “Electrical Undergrounding Project with Emphasis on Street Lighting & Provision for Enhanced Cell Service” with Isaac Brownman, LBK
Bart Wassmansdorf
Director of Public Works, and James Linkogle, LBK Project Manager, as presenters. Following their review of the GMD project, Allen Parsons: LBK Planning, Zoning & Building Director described how the Town is preparing for the real possibility of the replacement of older buildings and how owners might be able to deal with existing bylaws through a new Non- Conforming Condominium Building Certification Process. This is a major accomplishment by the Town as there is now a process for older condominiums, who have excess density that is currently prohibited by code, to work with the Town’s Planning, Zoning & Building Department to complete recordable documentation that will show existing factors and privileges that were in place prior to the 1984 downzoning. This meeting was held at our clubhouse with a good number of residents in attendance.
“Red Tide” was the subject of December’s session held at the Players Club. This is
a complex topic with many factors influencing the intensity and length of the
blooms. Water temperature, salinity, sunlight and runoff all play a part. The
meeting was well reported in the Longboat Observer and can be reviewed on
their website here: (https://www.yourobserver.com/article/longboat-group-calls-
for-red-tide-czar)
Grand Bay was the location of the January meeting at which the Insurance Market of Today and the impact of climate change was the primary topic. David Hendrick, Vice President, and David Burr, Vice President, of Insurance Office of America, along with Mike Mailliard of MIC Insurance were presenters. The range of topics was very broad, ranging from definitions of terms to amounts considered appropriate for various coverages.
If anyone has interest in seeing minutes of these or any other meetings, Slade Cargill, our representative to the Federation now, may be able to assist you.
The Federation has been an important part of the island’s affairs. Even though it is non-political it nevertheless exerts considerable influence on the political environment. Next month, for example, it will consider its annual submission to the Town Council

Barbara was a longtime resident of Longboat Harbour.
She and her husband, Lou, purchased their condo in
1969 being one of the original owners. For 50 years
Barbara enjoyed the amenities that Longboat Harbour has offered. She was a longtime
participant in the art studio, sculpting many fine pieces, and an active member of the
Harbourettes, enjoying hours of competitive bridge. Together they enjoyed being
members of the Longboat Harbour Yacht Club and for numerous years loved boating in
the bay and having their boat on one of the inner harbor slips.
Barbara enjoyed being a part of the bingo group, pool side parties, and of course the
memorable sunset gatherings. And far beyond the activities of Longboat Harbour were
the countless friends that were forever in her heart. Family members Eleanor
Osborne Carnese, Vincent Falcone and his wife Dell, Jimmy Falcone and his wife
Pam are currently residents at Longboat Harbour.
A remembrance celebration of Barbara’s life will take place at the Island House Dining

FINANCE COMMITTEE: An ad-hoc Finance Committee was appointed by the Board of Directors to assist in
the analysis of the reserve study and to research funding options of future capital
projects. This work will be carried out in conjunction with the Operating
Committee. The Finance Committee issued a Request for Comment on future
funding methods. The analysis of the responses validates that we have a very
diverse community and many different opinions on how projects should be
funded. The Committee appreciates your comments.
The ad hoc Finance Committee in conjunction with the Operating Committee will
develop information that can be present to the Board of Directors to assist the
Board in making informed decisions, using their best business judgement, in
fulfilling their fiduciary responsibility to the Association.
THE WEARIN’ OF THE GREEN Bagpipers, Irish Step Dancers, Corned Beef and Cabbage, Irish Soda Bread and a sea of green welcomed a sold-out house to celebrate St.
Patrick’s Day and did LbH celebrate! No matter your ancestors’ country of origin, on this night everyone was Irish! Our own bagpiper, David Driscoll piped us
into the merrymaking where we were
greeted by our hosts Graham and Gail.
There was
plenty of
entertainment starting
with our talented DJ
Saxman who
serenaded us during
the cocktail hour and
dinner. After dinner,
The Flynn Family
Singers pleasured us
with authentic Irish
songs that crossed the gamut of Irish history. The
Flynn’s were followed by The Legacy Irish Dance Troupe
who ranged in age from late twenties down to four or
five. Adorable and talented step dancers some of whom
Gail Gilvey & Graham Samson
David Driscoll
have competed nationally and internationally in Irish Step Dancing contests.
And the “piece de resistance”
(pardon my French), our own Joe
Callahan delivered Wild Colonial Boy
and Danny Boy in his beautiful Irish
tenor. He didn’t miss a word of the
latter! There was many a tear shed during
Joe’s performance, so glad we were to
hear him sing again.
Later, Graham and Gail, our tireless Rec Committee Chairpersons who have
brought so much joy to our community during their tenure took time to thank
four special people that have always been on deck to help them Brian Doherty,
John Shea, Tom Drugan and Ken Comeforo.
Thank you to Gail and Graham and their “aides de camp” for a great party and a
fabulous season! Mary Bock

which is different
each day of the
week. The group is
available to all LbH
residents of all ages.
Jeannie McIvor has
been a dedicated
seasonal leader of
the group for many
years. Because Jeannie is moving, she will pass on the leader’s baton at the end of

Jeannie and Dennis all the best in their new home. Pam Euerle
BOOK n’ BUDDIES Hi All!
As most of
you know,
our dear
friend,
Diane
Vanderpoel
has moved
back home
since Dick’s Marge Geiger
passing. Diane was an integral part of our book club, filling in for me if I could not
make a meeting, doing exceptional research on the authors, etc. Diane
contacted me and has forwarded all of this season’s books for donation to our
Longboat Harbour Library. We are so grateful and Beverly Grimes, our library
caretaker, is ecstatic. We will invite Beverly at the end of our season and donate
all the books to her formally. Thanks Diane for your comraderie, friendship and
dedication to our book club.
I’m delighted to report that Marie Munoz has joined me as co-chair of our book
club. We are entering a new and exciting phase. Not only have we gotten great
feedback for this year’s book list, we have been invited to “Meet the Authors” at
the Longboat Key Club on Monday, March 11th. Longboat Key’s local authors
represent many different genres. We met seven different authors and conversed
with each one. It was an interesting day.
I have been approached by one of our local authors expressing her interest in our
book list and our book club. Her name is Helaine Mario. Ms. Mario gave me her
website (helainemario.com). She has authored four novels which, upon reading
the jackets, look very enticing. She writes mystery suspense novels. I’m looking
forward to getting to know them. Ms. Mario has an impressive website. I
encourage any reader to check it out. Her books can be found on Amazon and
Barnes and Noble. She has presented her books at the Thrillers Show in New
York, a prestigious writers’ consortium.
I expressed to Ms. Mario that she is most welcome to join us at our meeting on
Wednesday, March 13th in the Library Lounge @7pm. She did join us on the 13th.
To the delight of our audience, Helaine brought two of her four novels to our
book club, The Lost Concerto and Dark Rhapsody. Both novels embrace music
and the arts. She explained to the audience the key to any writer is inspiration.
Once the seed is planted then process can be achieved. Ms. Mario continued by
telling us how much she loved the writing process and explained the publishing
submission process. She prefers, if you can afford it, to self-publish. She also let
us know that her first book was published when she was 68 years of age. Her
presentation was interesting and knowledgeable, with a comedic flavor. Our
audience was mesmerized. Helaine has donated one of her books to our library
and has autographed two others which we will donate to our library when we
finish reading them. All agreed that her presentation was wonderful. We ended
the evening with coffee and treats. Thank you Helaine!
All of our members stayed on to discuss the night’s book, Nutshell by Ian
McEwan. This book is outlandish, funny, and delightful to read. Nutshell is a
classic tale of murder and deceit, with a twist, from one of the world’s master
storytellers. A great read not to be taken seriously.
If you are curious and have never joined us, don’t be shy. Check the bulletin
boards in your laundry room and it will give you the dates, times and titles of our
meetings. Even if you have not read the book, you might want to join us to listen
to the discussion. We have lots of fun and at the end of the season, we will join
together for lunch or dinner at Lazy Lobster. Enjoy!

BEST OF BROADWAY AT LbH Another wonderful musical event
presented by our inhouse talent, Jan
Ortmann on the piano and Bob Geraci
on the Sax! It was the best of LbH
presenting The Best of Broadway, the
fifth annual musical cabaret we have
enjoyed in as many years. This year’s
show featured selections from Cole
Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein and George
and Ira Gershwin eloquently delivered to more Bob Geraci & Jan Ortmann
than one hundred attendees by Bob and Jan who was also responsible for the
arrangements.
Some songs, “I Whistle a Happy Tune”, “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa
My Hair”, “A Wonderful Guy” and “Do-Re-Mi” were enthusiastically sung by our
Women’s Chorus; others, “Bloody Mary”, “The Surrey With the Fringe on Top”,
“There is Nothing Like a Dame” and “Kansas City” were vocalized by the Men’s
Chorus led by their principal
singer Larry Bateman.
“Getting To Know You”, “It’s a
Grand Night for Singing”,
“Oklahoma” and “I Got
Rhythm” were performed by
the LbH Combined Chorus with
gusto! All this with the help of
Connie Haubert who turned
pages for Jan and Beverly
Lorie. Our tech guru and
husband of Jan, Bob Ortmann, was
responsible for the delightful screen display that complemented the musical
renditions. Thanks to Ken and Pam Euerle and Shahe and Shirley Momjian who
served a scrumptious dessert table at
intermission.
Of course, our tireless Rec Chairpersons,
Graham Samson and Gail Gilvey were
again on scene to kick off the evenings
festivities and to encourage folks to dig
deep in their pockets for donations to the
All Faiths Food Bank which totaled
$791.00. All in all, a lovely evening spent
listening to great music with neighbors
and friends at LbH. Mary Bock

MENS CLUB First Men’s club meeting of the 2019 season was
Tuesday January 22. We are excited to report we
had record breaking attendance for a Men’s club
meeting and a packed house at 1:00 for the guest
speaker from the Center for Brain Health. We
listened to an interesting, informative lecture on
“How to be You for as Long as Possible.”
The big winner of the day was John Macomber who walked away with $272 from the 50/50 raffle. All the proceeds from our 50/50 raffles go toward paying for the Women's Appreciation Breakfast. Jim Vinci won a bottle of wine, Artie Stefanski won a free Optimus car wash, Vinny Flynn won the free Men's Club certificate and Alan Malone won the Lazy Lobster gift certificate. It was so nice to see Alan and Ron bringing their dad Alex to the meeting. Alex has been a long time LBH owner. The Fitness Tip of the Day was a demonstration on how to use the “senior citizen” crunch machine from our gym and how to get a good, quick work out using rubber bands.
The Men’s club hosted the Super
Bowl party on February 3, we were
treated to great food and a great
game. The food definitely had a New
England Theme...New England Clam
Chowder, Boston Baked Beans,
“Fenway” Franks”, Not Your Momma’s
Mac n Cheese, Anthony’s Pier 4 Cheese
Spread, all made by Bonnie Coughlin Janice Doherty, Marjorie & Alan Hurwitz
Bill Coughlin
North End Pepperoni bread made
by Pam & Ken Euerle and
Spaghetti Pie made by Sparky &
Karen Pashtow. We didn’t forget
the LA fans, Bonnie made Chili,
although it was Cincinnati style,
with all the fixings, and avocado &
veggie wraps. Thanks to Graham
Sampson, Brian Doherty, and
Maintenance Supervisor Ryan
Hayes for getting the new
speakers & broadcast equipment installed in time for the game. As at most Super
Bowl Parties, the game of chance is as much fun as the football game. Graham
filled two boards of squares. Winners on board one were: Bob Hefner, Bill Stamp,
Ellen Heffner and Bonnie Coughlin. Winners on board two were: Vinny Flynn, Joe
Longtin, Bonnie Coughlin & Ellen Heffner. The 50/50 raffle winner was Kathy
Clarke, Marge & Bob Clarke’s sister-in-law renting in I building.
The Men’s Club hosted 112 Longboat Harbour Ladies at the Ladies Appreciation
Breakfast Sunday,
Feb 10. Over 40 men
volunteered to set up
and decorate on
Saturday and serve
and clean up on
Sunday to make the
day special. Guests
were greeted at the
door by Joe Longtin, looking dapper in his tuxedo, and Larry Bateman and Bill
Stamp presented each guest with a flower and bag of sweet treats. Music was
provided by Bob Geraci. Guests were treated to a relaxing Sunday morning
breakfast.
The February Men’s club luncheon was also well attended with another huge
crowd. The guest speaker was financial guru Lauren Rudd. Lauren’s was engaging
and his presentation informative. Feedback from the presentation has been great.
The theme of Lauren’s presentation was investing in equities that have increased
dividends for at least ten years. Thanks to Darroll Meyer, Barbara Stamp and
Bonnie Coughlin for preparing a delicious lunch for us at every Men’s Club
meeting.
New owner John McCardle and his guest Robbo won a huge 50/50 raffle of $310. They were also kind enough to donate money back into the Women's Appreciation Breakfast fund. Once again, we had some neat door prizes. Bob Tosby won a bottle of wine. Keith O'Connor won a neat package of batteries. Al Fischbein won the Optimus Car Wash, Tom Vitro won the Lazy Lobster gift certificate, Vinny Flynn won the neat LED flashlight Ron Malone won the free ticket to Men's Club. Who says there is no free lunch? The Fitness Tip of the Day was on diet with facts on the obesity epidemic. One of the simplest diet solutions discussed was before going to bed, record everything you ate during the day. The March Men’s Club was once again well attended with 60 plus Men and 40 plus women joining at 1:00 pm for the Guest Speakers. The meeting featured owners Ted and Barbara Janssen as our guest presenters. Ted and Barbara are avid scuba divers. They have explored and photographed parts of the earth most of us will never see. We are grateful for their willingness to share their adventures and passion with us. Thank you to Ted and Barbara for the time they devoted to preparing their presentation. The presentation was engaging, entertaining breathtaking and filled with interesting facts.
Special thanks to Darroll Meyer, Barbara Stamp, Jan Ortmann and Brian Doherty for their help with this event. The fitness tip for the meeting was on the benefits of strength training, whether it is with rubber bands machines or weights. It was discussed that around the year 2000 research showed how beneficial these activities are for senior citizens. Of course, before beginning any exercise program, you always need to check with your doctor Our lucky prize winners were: Frank Carbone winning the bottle of wine, Tom Drugan winning Optimus car wash, Yo Kimura winning the free Men's Club certificate, Don Atkinson winning the hot and cold drink metal cup, Charlie Geiger winning the $15 gift certificate to Lazy Lobster, Mike King winning the package of three flash lights and last but not least I won $220, half of the 50/50 raffle, which was donated back to the Women's Appreciation Breakfast fund. Men’s Club wants to thank members Dave Driscoll, Vin Flynn (& family), Joe Callahan, Bob Geraci, and Bob Ortmann’s wife Jan for the wonderful entertainment they provide for the Community with their breathtaking musical performances during the Ortmann/Geraci Fundraising Concert and the St. Patrick’s Day Party. The next Men’s Club meeting is April 9th and will feature owner Bart Wassmansdorf with a presentation on the History of Longboat Harbour. Longtime residents Bart & his wife Jean have amassed a tremendous amount of knowledge about our community and have cataloged our history through the years in amazing photos. I guarantee you will learn facts about LBH you didn’t know. Bill Coughlin
Dateline: March 25, 2019, Longboat Harbour Broadway’s best brought to life by LbH residents! I am not much of a joiner. We
are not much for Broadway musicals either. We never gave Playreaders a chance.
Fact is, we were at Playreaders’ season finale because we were asked/shamed
into going by one of the co-leaders, Allen Ross. What Gail and I found was a fun
group and a vibrant environment. This was enjoyable. I definitely could do
Mondays at 7:15 pm. Just have to get it on the calendar. Done! I’ll be there.
I project that there will be lots of new blood when
Monday, January 13, 2020 arrives. Gail and I plan on
being active members and we will be imploring our
60 and 70 somethings friends to join us for two
hours of fun. I heard that Ross & Reilly are thinking
of doing “Hamilton”. Imagine that…how fantastic!
I’m thinking of the historical lesson in addition to
bringing “Hamilton to life at LbH. Gail and I are
looking forward to the 2020 version of The Ross &
Reilly Show. There will be more reminders as the
starting date nears. We really want to see you
there! Graham Samson
PICKLE BALL HAS TAKEN LbH BY STORM Thanks to the persistence of
Ken Comeforo and Mary Bock
and the welcome help of our
Manager Igor Solovyev and the
Operating Committee, Pickle
Ball has arrived at LbH. Our
beautiful tennis courts were
under used while residents
were heading to a crowded
and over used Bayfront Park to
play Pickle Ball. The Operating
Committee agreed to paint
Pickle Ball lines on the tennis court yielding two Pickle Ball courts. Wow! Two for
the price of one! The OC also agreed to fund the purchase of two mobile nets to
facilitate Pickle Ball play and still not interfere with play on the tennis court. An
added bonus was a shade providing bench overhang that benefits both Pickle Ball
players and Tennis players.
Many new friends have been made on Wednesdays at 3:30 pm and Saturdays at
1:00 pm. where often more than 16 players gather to play round robins. All ages
and skill levels are welcome. Come on over and join the LbH Pickle Ball group.

Rescue in High Seas
Lorenzo Bartholomew Hornblower here, call me LBH
for short. I want to tell you about this extraordinary
rescue that took place on the way to the rendez-
vous at Mar Vista. It involves the vessel Elixir and its
knucklehead skipper and three heroes who rescued
him, his passengers, and his miserable vessel.
To go to Mar Vista everyone knows you turns left
just before getting to red marker #40 staying close to
south end Jewfish key to reach Mar Vista. Upon
noticing deeper waters on his depth sounder,
captain nincompoop decides to turn left at red
marker #38 and instructed his wife to alert him if
they get too close to the shallows. Apparently, this ignoramus doesn’t know how to read charts
nor can he heed the alarm of his depth sounder, nor the pleading of his wife to turn back since
the depth sounder started reading negative numbers. The pea-brain kept going full steam
ahead until he ran aground.
Normally if someone runs aground, best action for his type of vessel is to put the engine in
reverse and head back where it came from. This ignoramus instead kept pushing ahead and
getting further wedged into the sand bar. The hullabaloo drew the attention of LBK Police who
came by to observe and stood by with lights flashing as the fathead tried to extricate the cursed
vessel from the sand bar.
After what seemed like hours, the halfwit finally gave up and called his buddy Ulf Langgard. Ulf
marshaled his friends Larry Bateman and John Macumber and arrived on the scene. Within
minutes they were able to break loose the wretched vessel. The experience of passengers was
so disturbing that one passenger decided to get a ride back with the Geraci’s instead of
experiencing another trauma on the way back. Insisting all along that the car ride was arranged
weeks ago. So, don’t be like Captain Dimwit. Go hear John Shea on April 2, talk about his vast
experience navigating around the shallows in the bay.
