LGSP-LED, Bohol assigns tourism workers training to BAHRR

National Kidney Month

TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol, (PIA) -- Bohol will host this year’s four major activities for the National Kidney Month celebration in June. The Renal Disease Control Program (REDCOP) team coming to Bohol this month will feature the country's top experts in renal disease. With the theme “Malusog na Bato, Yan ang Gusto Ko,” the activities here include a consultative forum on kidney diseases with lay persons and medical experts from the Department of Health (DOH), National Kidney Transplant Institute (NKTI) Medical Outreach Program, free Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) tests, and free Urinalysis pre-screening and medical consultations for those with positive urinalysis and FBS results, according to the country’s authorities at the Renal Disease Control Program (REDCOP) and Bohol Kidney Disease Prevention Program Coordinator Macchiavelia Caliao. REDCOP is se t to meet Boholanos via a lay forum set in the afternoon of June 20. About 300 participants from

different sectors in Bohol are set to be invited for the activity. Also simultaneous with the forum is a medical outreach free medical check-up at the Gov. Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital, Bohol event sponsor. Started as Preventive Nephrology Project, DOH issued a memorandum order in 2000 creating REDCOP. The same order put the NKTI as REDCOP’s main implementing agency in activities relative to kidney disease prevention and control as well as promotion of end-stage renal disease patients’ health including organ transplantation and organ donation. Kidneys perform the important function of removing waste products from the blood and regulating the water fluid levels, explained Dr. Rene Sales during one Kapihan sa PIA. "They are so important in removing waste products from the body, keeping toxins from building up in the bloodstream, producing hormones that control other body functions, such as regulating blood pressure and producing red blood cells as well as regulating the levels of minerals or electrolytes (e.g., sodium, calcium, and potassium) and fluid in the body," he shared. commonly called kidney disease usually happens when a person with diabetes or hypertension disregards proper treatment. Also, nephritis or the inflammation of the kidneys possibly due to an auto-immune system failure can cause the kidneys to fail, according to medical experts. In several instances also, kidney failure can be caused by certain medications that can be dangerous to the kidney tissue. Just as kidney disease cases increase in the country, a disheartening picture is seen in Bohol where a radio social service program is clogged daily with kidney patients asking for financial assistance for dialysis and medications. This too as more and more Filipinos with diabetes and hypertension still go about their lives, disregard treatment and healthy lifestyle options, thus potentially adding up to renal disease problems. Diabetes and hypertension still ranks among the factors that lead to kidney diseases, according to medical experts. Complicating the problem is the fact that only a few number of patients with failing kidney consider hemo-dialysis due to its prohibitive cost, said Dr. Mayida Ybanez, nephrologist in Bohol. Hemo dialysis is a method used to cleanse the blood, using a machine which acts as a temporary kidney cleaning up body waste products like creatinine and urea. Owing to the sensitivity of the kidneys and the alarming kidney disease cases here, REDCOP with the DOH, Bohol Provincial Government and the Philippine Information Agency also brings the medical team to talk to media to engage them in helping spread the information.(rmn/RAHC/PIA Bohol)

NEGROS ORIENTAL

DUMAGUETE CITY (PIA) -- The Department of Education (DepEd) in Negros Oriental said that all local stakeholders have shown their commitment in repairing school buildings in time for the opening of classes today. Dumaguete City Education Program Supervisor Jose Miraflor Jr. said their city schools superintendents, parents, and volunteers participated in the DepEd’s Brigada Eskwela Program and gave their time in repairing classrooms to ensure the smooth opening of classes.

“We do not do this for publicity but to show the spirit of volunteerism, it shows that the people of Dumaguete are concerned with their schools,” he said. Meanwhile, Dr. Salustiano Jimenez, Provincial Schools Division Supt. in Negros Oriental, introduced the Brigada Eskwela Plus. Jimenez explained Brigada Eskwela Plus is an extension of Brigada Eskwela Program that usually lasts for a week. It aims for continuous classroom clean-up activities and monitoring even after the actual Brigada Eskwela to ensure classes will not be hampered by poor school facilities.

DepEd Negros Oriental assures classrooms ready as classes

By roi lomotan “It doesn’t mean that after June 3 there will be no more (classroom clean-up activities). It is called Brigada Eskwela Plus because it’s whole year round,” Miraflor said. DepEd in Negros Oriental however, has noted only minor repairs in school buildings. “Negros Oriental has more or less 800 public schools. When I went to different schools there were only minor repairs needed,” Jimenez bared in the dialect. However, Jimenez said he believes that Brigada Eskwela is an effective way to source help from people.

DILG directs LCEs to create transition teams

DUMAGUETE CITY (PIA) -- The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) in Negros Oriental has directed local government units (LGUs) to create their respective local governance transition teams to guarantee a smooth turnover of newly-elected or re-elected local officials. DILG provincial director Farah Diba Gentuya said this is in compliance with DILG Memorandum Circular No. 2013-33 signed by Secretary Mar Roxas on April 18, 2013. Gentuya said: “Our field officers are fully prepared to work with their local chief executives (LCEs) and other members of the transition team in ensuring orderly turnover of accountabilities and in conducting comprehensive briefing to newly-elected officials.” The team will be composed of

the DILG representative, Commission on Appointments (COA) representative, NGO/PO representative, heads of all departments and chaired by the LCE. It is mandated to conduct an inventory of movable assets like vehicles, office equipment, furniture and supplies and immovable properties such as land, buildings, and infrastructure facilities, said Gentuya. “Aside from this, they are tasked to assemble all documents and records and organize a turn-over ceremony," she added. DILG pledged to support the local officials and conduct briefings for those elected for the first time on their duties and responsibilities, provisions of the Local Government Code, status and programs of the LGUs, along with re-orientation of returning officials. He added that a stakeholder’s summit took place after the launching of the program last May 20 wherein school officials presented to stakeholders the list of school equipment and facilities which are needed to be fixed. Both officials were guest speakers on the recent Kapihan sa PIA Forum where they presented to the media documentation pictures that showed improvement of classrooms after the conduct of Brigada Eskwela. Jimenez assured the parents that “We are doing our best that our children will be comfortable in the schools they are enrolled in.” Miraflor also emphasized that DepEd is doing its part in teaching the students the value of care over repair. “We teach children not to destroy school things but to care for it,” Miraflor said. Participants are the Siquijor Womens Association for a Better Environment (SWABE), a women’s association engaged in the production of herbal tea. DOST Provincial Director, Engr. The barangay of San Antonio, noted for the presence of endemic herbs species, can be more productive by introducing income-generating projects utilizing the locally available herbs in the surroundings, he said. “We knew that infused oil extracted from locally available herbs like, buyo, kukugbanog, tanglad, handalusa, luy-a, ganda and many more can be a perfect massage oil,” says de la Pena. Results of the project will also enhance the tourism development in the area because the association plans to set up a massage and spa center utilizing locally formulated massage oil and scents.
