Industrial Insight

Over the past 12 months, Industrial Demolition & Environmental Services has undergone its greatest period of growth and diversification, not only in the projects it has undertaken, but also in the range of services it now provides to an expanding client base.

As one of Australia’s leading demolition organizations, Industrial has grown from a specialist demolition and dismantling business into an organization with the capability to undertake some of Australia’s largest and most complex demolition and remediation projects.

Industrial Wreckers – as the Company was known for more than three decades – has been a pioneer in much of the advancement made by the demolition industry in Australia over the past thirty years.

Today Industrial is recognised for its skills in a number of areas, which includes demolition, dismantling, environmental services, recycling and specialist emergency recovery services.

Derek Wilson and Rudy Kalab, who formed an enduring partnership in 1976 and developed a specialist business that focussed on the industrial sector, founded Industrial Wreckers. Today –the executive management team has expanded to include Graham Cressey, responsible for the management and development of the Company’s demolition services and Steve McCoach, who is developing the Company’s environmental services capacity and major projects management.

The variety of work that the company now successfully delivers, includes everything from major industrial demolition projects to intricate dismantling works within live plant and production environments, bridge and wharf dismantling, commercial buildings and complex soil and groundwater remediation tasks.

Welcome to the periodical newsletter from Industrial Demolition & Environmental Services.

I.E.S. - was established as a specialist entity, committed to restoring polluted or contaminated sites to places that are safe for people and the environment.

While environmental works are often a part of any demolition project, Industrial saw value in providing a specialist division with dedicated expertise in this area. The Group has a highly experienced team who have worked in a range of environments and projects for a variety of clients.

IES is able to offer a range of services as well as cost effective and site specific solutions. The Company has a broad range of specialist equipment and access to a group of specialist professionals to add value to the project.

IES is also able to provide project management services.

The IES mission is to transform contaminated sites into OHS and environmentally usable places.

Environmental Solutions.

Asbestos abatements• Part 6 hazard audits• Initial investigations• Soil remediation• Soil reclassification• Offsite disposal of reclassified soil or

reuse on site• Import of EPA clean fill

Bioremediation• The process whereby petroleum/

hydrocarbon concentrations in soil are reduced by stimulating aerobic activities.

• This is a cost effective alternative to excavation and the offsite disposal of hazardous waste to landfill.

Underground Petroleum Storage Systems• AIP approved OHS system removal

and disposal of underground fuel tanks and above ground fuel tanks.

Soil Remediation• IES offers cost effective solutions• Timing and customer focussed• Asbestos, heavy metals,

hydrocarbons• Cost effective site reuse strategies

Water treatment systems• Cost effective• EPA legal• Water disposal solutions

Project managementIES can take charge of the whole process, managing consultants, authorities and waste facilities for the client, from the initial investigation through to final clearances or process, or work as part of the client’s environmental management team.

AIP AccreditationAll IES personnel have worked under the AIP system for years and continually update their certificates to keep them current.

HuntsmanOver the past twelve months, Industrial has been undertaking one of Australia’s largest demolition projects for the Huntsman Chemical Company (HCCA).

The 35-hectare Huntsman facility at Brooklyn Victoria was a landmark project – not just for the sheer size of the site, but also for the variety of complex structures that had to be dismantled and recycled.

Between 1939 and 2010 a range of chemicals, styrene and resins were produced on the site.

The project was structured from the onset as an alliance between HCCA, Industrial Demolition Services (IDS) and Grays-on-line. This arrangement provided a unique opportunity for all parties to share in the break up of the site’s considerable assets. Gray’s role was to dispose of stores, workshops and other transportable and relocatable assets. HCCA maintained the role of prime contractor, with a dedicated management team overseeing the development of the project. The IDS primary role was to

undertake the complete demolition of all fixed assets and above ground structures, including columns, reactors, exchangers, pumps, towers and boiler, in accordance with HCAA’s strict OH&S requirements.

Almost 100% of the complex has been recycled. Steel and other metals have all been recycled as have the considerable quantities of concrete and brick rubble from the site. Industrial expects to complete this project in May 2011.

Wodonga Train Derailment.Industrial has a well-regarded reputation for being able to mobilise quickly to emergency situations. The Company’s expertise as an expert in dismantling buildings and heavy equipment meant that when the main railway artery between Melbourne and Sydney became blocked by a goods train derailment, Industrial was able to float heavy equipment and personnel to the site. IDS was able to commence work planning for applications and approvals with local water authorities within hours of being contracted to remove the four most precarious carriages.

One of the challenges of this heavy goods derailment was that it occurred on an elevated section of the railway, which spanned Wodonga Creek and significant wetlands as well as roads and highways.

The Pacific National freight train experienced bogie failure, which resulted in 660 metres of track being ripped up along with 550 concrete sleepers. 16 wagons were derailed.

IDS partnered with expert bridge designers and constructors, Bridge & Marine and quickly mobilised both heavy equipment and personnel to the site to ensure that this main rail artery was cleared as quickly as possible. IDS took the decision to remove the four most difficult carriages at a fixed price as opposed to a multi-million dollar interstate crane mobilisation in a hazardous and flood prone area. IDS also salvaged over 100 tonnes of precious metal cargo.

The derailment occurred in a culturally sensitive area and consultation was held with the Department of Aboriginal and Heritage Affairs.

Major Factory Fires in Victoria.IDS has a longstanding involvement in emergency response and has established strong connections with various fire builders, insurance agencies and loss adjustors.

With access being paramount to getting a fire under control, Industrial was called to assist the fire fighting team at Cowper Street Footscray, while the building and its contents were still burning, removing building components to allow access to hotspots. As excavators removed material from the factory, the MFB was able to apply water to the burning material.

IDS was able to reduce the estimated event duration to less than 24 hours which assisted in freeing up both fire equipment and personnel.

Once the fire event was over and the MFB had demobilised, Industrial Demolition & Environmental Services removed in excess of 12,000 tonnes of building materials and product,

making adjacent structures safe for reconstruction.

At a recent fire at Tuft Master Carpets factory in Preston Victoria, the scene was impacted by the presence of an asbestos roof which had collapsed during the event, contaminating the entire situation site. IDS was able to mobilise specialist equipment to segregate contaminated building elements for subsequent disposal.

Working in conjunction with hazard removal specialists, Industrial personnel were able to segregate contaminated and non-contaminated waste streams and remove all fire affected structural members.

IDS was also contracted at SKM, a major curb side recycling organization which experienced a serious fire in November 2010. An electrical fire started a blaze in the recyclable waste-processing centre with the eventual loss of two major buildings and equipment. Fast work by the 80 strong MFB crew ensured that additional buildings and assets were saved from the fire.

Post fire event, Industrial was able to mobilise equipment to remove destroyed recycling plant buildings. Industrial operators were able to surgically remove affected structural members and concrete, allowing for reconstruction. Industrial Demolition and Environmental Services also installed extensive structural supports, allowing for the retention of non- fire affected structural members.
