The Haze Concert

T he Haze is a Perth based band that has

been delighting metro and country

audiences for many years. Formerly

Purple Haze in the 70s, the quartet re-formed in

2009 and has been busy ever since. Vocal

harmonies are a speciality of The Haze. With a

range of instruments in the band they pay tribute

to many artists and genres. Greg (Bazz) Clarke is a

fine sax player and vocalist who doubles on both

trumpet and rhythm guitar. Robbie Jones is a

creative guitarist who can move between many styles of music. He plays both acoustic and

electric guitar and contributes vocals. Rod Christian is a composer and professional music

teacher. He plays bass in The Haze and is the “choir master” behind the band’s harmonies.

Our very own U3A member, Nige Ridgway, completes the quartet on drums and vocals. He

has been playing in rock ‘n’ roll, jazz and country bands since the mid-60s. ◼

2020 membership fees for those who

want to pay online. Those of you sharing

an email will now have received an email

from our Secretary, Christine, outlining

why you need to have individual emails

for using the On-Line Management

number of our members but if you are

one of those and are unsure of what you

need to do or want assistance, contact

your Council Delegate or Secretary and

they will direct you to the person in your

region who can assist. If you are still

unsure what to do contact Christine, our

As we move quickly toward the end of the

enjoying U3A then perhaps you might like

to be more involved at a Regional level.

There are lots of ways you can help out, it

Dear Editor

Loved the inclusion of all the great talks

etc, going on in all the regions in

chronological order. Now up on my

noticeboard so that I can see at a glance

all the wonderful variety of talks, outings

and other things U3A has to offer its

members.

Thank you and congratulations on a

I’m sorry Christine, I don’t like the new

format at all, find it messy & hard to

follow.

I much prefer the original way of showing

the individual regions activities.

It must have taken a lot of time to get all

the information into this new way, but I’d

be surprised if many people prefer it.

However I do wish the new editor ‘good

luck’ for future editions of our important

newsletter. ◼

I for one like the combined schedule. If I

could I'd take advantage of some of the

fabulous events taking place across Perth.

Only other comment in regard Schedule

would be to Highlight the Month or

maybe put it in the middle of the line.

Thanks again

Jean. ◼

Dear Peter

Congratulations on your first edition as

editor of Inform. It certainly is an

extensive coverage of U3A groups and

well set out.

I would just like to mention that our choir

members were delighted at making the

front page and were pleased to have the

article also. By the way, that person in

front of the picture was our musical

director, Gioi Papillon, not me, but she

wasn’t fussed and anyway I didn’t give

you her name.

Well done. Kind regards

Gay Eivers. ◼

Hi Peter

Congratulations, Inform looks terrific. I

like the fresh new look and I am sure the

members will find it interesting and

informative. It may take some time for

members to get used to the new program

format but it should encourage people to

get out to see some of the activities

happening in other regions.

Well done Ron. ◼

Hi Peter,

Some feedback on your Inform issue from

a previous Editor of Inform from March

2014 to February 2017. I enjoyed reading

all of the magazine, but there was one

thing I found frustrating – the combined

layout of the meetings of all Regions

sorted by date. If you are to continue with

these 5½ pages of tables then I think you

should initially Data Sort on Regions then

make the secondary sort on Days.

Otherwise I would like to see you return

to the old format that has stood the test

of time over some two decades. I guess it

depends on whether one is interested in

the Region programs or the day on which

meetings are held. Also finding a meeting

and then having to check back on the

legends was fairly cumbersome.

Editor:

Thank you all for your feedback. It’s fair to

say that while many liked the combined

format, many didn’t. In this issue of

Inform; therefore, the Schedule of Events

is in Region order. Don’t forget the

combined schedule is still available on the

website. Keep those letters coming in and

I hope you like this revised schedule

format. ◼

I wonder what the rooms of the

houses we have lived in

Look like now there is no-one to see

their still mess,

Full of light, and stillness, and a mouse

That you were sure you'd baited properly.

Somewhere, someone is speaking about

you

In the present tense, like a visitor

Explaining to his friend the timetable of

trains

Of a city I lived in for ten years.

I hope you think of when you carried my

first name

On your tongue, sometimes, even though

I think of us very little. I don't know

What I am expecting, except that we sink

Into dark water like skipping rocks

And are forgotten. ◼

T he party was in full swing with

music blaring, loud chatter and

laughter. People crushed against

each other having a quite wonderful time,

drinks spilling as they danced and nobody

cared at all. It was simply the best kind of

birthday party the couple could have

wished for.

In a corner of the room though it seemed

that something was happening – Nathan’s

wife Sue was missing. ‘She’s been gone a

while,’ he said. ‘I thought she was just

taking a breather, but now no-one can

find her.’ He looked as though he was

about to cry. They hadn’t been married

long, and the poor man was quite dis-

traught.

‘It’s okay, Nathan,’ someone said, ‘we’ll

find her. Come on, lads, we’re on a hunt

looking for the lovely Mrs Nathan …’

The Birthday Party fiction by Sonia Kellett

They looked everywhere, in and under

beds, in the kitchen and under the table,

every nook and cranny was searched but

the lovely Mrs Nathan could not be found.

His brother Brett had the forethought to

go out into the garden, probably drawn by

a strange sound coming from the top of a

stand of trees at the rear of the property.

As he neared it became apparent that it

was a woman’s voice singing the national

anthem rather drunkenly from the top of

a tree - the lovely Mrs Nathan.

Looking up in the darkness he called gen-

tly, ‘You have to come down, Sue. Come

on.’ But Sue was not going to move, and

sang on very much out of tune while wav-

ing her arms about and almost falling

through the branches.

Meanwhile crumpled in a heap on the

floor of the kitchen Nathan was being

consoled. ‘I think she’s left me,’ he

sobbed. ‘It’s all my fault,’ and his voice

trailed off into unintelligible self-pitying

mumbles.

‘Has she had too much to drink?’ some-

one ventured. Nathan looked up, mutter-

ing, ‘Same as me, I suppose. A few glasses

of red before everyone arrived, and then

we got into it, I suppose.’

‘Wipe your nose, Nathan, and get up on

your feet,’ said a friend sternly. ‘She’s

going to be alright. Come on, let’s explore

outside,’ and with that he lifted Nathan

off the floor and led him out into the gar-

den.

That’s when he saw his wife. Sitting in a

wheelbarrow in a dishevelled state at two

o’clock in the morning being wheeled

back into your own birthday party was

never going to be a good look. ◼

The memorial plaques next to the trees to

commemorate the fallen soldiers, were all

painted neatly by the volunteers! We

drove past the huge Kimberly Boab tree. It

has settled in well here in Perth!

Lesmurdie Hills group went on

a trip to Kings Park. Robert was

our driver this time. We enjoyed looking

at the beautiful display of wildflowers as

we walked to the "The Botanical Cafe" for

our morning tea. Robert then took us on a

slow drive through the park, where we

admired the wildflowers from the comfort

of the bus! The park looked well cared for!

M embers have enjoyed a wide

variety of interesting

speakers and topics. External

speakers included Tammy Gibbs,

underwater photographer, who featured

her recent trip to India as well as sharks

underwater. We welcomed several

visitors to this excellent presentation.

Anthony Alborn gave a highly

recommended, in-depth talk about 'The

Fenians'. David Hounsome helped us

make sense of Modern Art. Our members’

talks have followed the theme of

'Explorers' with presentations on Burke &

Swan Hills Region Report 2019 By Janice Brooks

Wills, Major Sir Thomas Mitchell and

Kieran Kelly (a modern day explorer).

We've also heard about Andrew Carnegie,

the philanthropist

Our member Corry Donovan, gave an

excellent talk about 'The Spanish Flu' at

Weatherburn, a doctors' conference and

to Swan Hills at the end of July. Our

shorter talks are appreciated by both the

speakers and the listeners. We've heard

about The Gunbarrel Highway, The

Quenda, Coming Home WW1 and The

Ghost Singer (Marni Nixon). Our five

minute Mystery Talks continue to be a

favourite with amazing variety.

At our Christmas-in-July lunch at

Parkerville Tavern we brought donations

to the Food Bank.

Our special groups, open to all members,

continue, including Brain Games. While

Keep the Marbles Rolling City Course fell

through, members can visit other Regions.

You will receive a warm welcome.

Remember, that you do not necessarily

have to be a regular attendee at Regional

meetings to join the individual groups. ◼

I t has been found that creating art in

a social painting environment,

allowing people to use their

imagination and focus on expressing their

feelings has great benefits in restoring

confidence and personal development. It

also helps enhance social skills.

A few years ago, as President of an Art

Association, I started a weekly social

painting group. A young man joined us

and over time I watched him grow from

painting very dark sad subjects crying, to

This is all about letting your feelings loose.

attend meetings in all WA Regions and in the City (http://www.u3auwa.org/). At most meetings there is a modest charge of

around $3‐$4 for room hire and refreshments. Items in bold denote lectures. Find your event on the tables on the following

pages. When planning to attend a meeting for the first time, please make contact with the group leader to confirm venue and time as

there may have been a change since publication. It should be noted that some groups have a limit on the number of people to allow

attendees the opportunity to participate fully. In this instance a second group may be started provided there is enough interest. As a rule,

some but not all Regions are in recess during January, please refer to the schedules. No meetings are held on Public Holidays. ◼ Across: Wayward, Squat, Saviour, Idiot, Diary, Pros-

Editors Note

S ome members may remember a

few years back when I shared

with them the story of my

grandfather’s journey round the world in

1896. This was based on a diary he kept

on his travels, his photo album and family

photographs.

Each time I gave my presentation,

members urged me to write a book based

on Bertie’s journey.

Thank you so much, U3A! Your

encouragement motivated me and the

book has now become a reality. As I

researched the subject, it has expanded to

cover other contemporary travellers and

travel generally, as it was in the 19th

Century. The extensive network of

railways and shipping, all driven by steam

enabled countless thousands of people to

explore the world.

It has been so much fun writing this book.

I have called it ‘Travels in the Realms

of Gold: The Revolution in Travel

Empowered by Steam’. ◼

Travels in the Realms of Gold by Virginia Bristowe

A change of venue, a full house

and a terrific topic. Saturday

13 July 2019 was full of

expectation. 'The Genius of DNA' brought

together speakers and audience and a

well organised committee. The day had to

be a success and it was.

The Seminar was opened by patron,

Emeritus Professor Alan Robson, who set

the scene with some background thinking.

From German scientist Friedrich Miescher

who isolated DNA; to James Watson and

'The Double Helix' structure; to public

opposition to genetic modification of

crops. Professor Robson had minds ready

for what was to follow.

Dr Gavin Turbett, Head of Forensic Biology

at Pathwest spoke about 'Forensic Biology

and DNA Profiling in WA'. Dr Turbett

discussed situations where forensic DNA

can be of assistance, the sources of the

DNA, the technology used for collection

and steps used to protect exhibits from

contamination. With DNA profiling he

asked 'What is reasonable doubt?' in light

of the changing expectations of the jurors,

lawyers, offenders, victims and the

general public.

Dr Shane Tobe spoke about Non-human

DNA in forensic science. Dr Tobe gave

insight into this field of research and the

breadth from wildlife crime; animal and

plant protected species and food products

that might not be what they are claimed.

However, strategies for testing can only

detect what they are testing for and this is

too expensive at the moment. Also use is

limited by a lack of a data base and lack of

statistics. Still, the Douglas Beamish

murder case established that white cat

hairs found on the leather jacket of the

victim, Shirley Duguay, proved to have

come from Snowball, who belonged to

the murderer.

Dr Ruey-Leng Loo spoke about

‘Establishing Personalised Nutrition and

Health: The Metabolic Phenotyping

Approach’. This deals with interactions at

a molecular level of the genetic make up,

environment and lifestyle and are highly

dynamic in response to changes in the

micro environment. This understanding is

not entirely new. In fact, in 1491 Johannes

de Ketham published a medical book

which promoted the 'Urine Wheel' to help

in diagnosis. Uroscopy or the physical

study of a urine sample had been used for

hundreds of years but rose in prominence

at this time. Dr Loo went on to explain her

research into 'What You Eat' and 'Where

You Live' at the micro level.

Christine Harris from Family History WA

spoke about ‘The Search for Your

Ancestry’ and explained that genealogy is

the basic evidence and family history is

telling the story. Christine gave an

excellent timeline of family history

research from the pen and ink of the

family bible to genetic genealogy of today.

Christine warned that you may unearth

something you may not be prepared for

and asked, 'can you deal with what you

find?' Her talk ended with where this

research is going and that is with facial

recognition using DNA markers.

To conclude, Dr Bob Mead (Emeritus

Professor Robert Mead) from Medical,

Molecular and Forensic Sciences gave a

Biochemistry Forensic Toxicologist version

of 'The Saturday Night Strangler'. Dr Mead

told the story as a who-done-it. A DNA

break-through came but first the serial

murderer had to be exhumed to prove his

guilt.

All in all a most interesting theme and

seminar. Congratulations to the

organising committee and helpers for a

job well done. ◼

Mid-North Writers Group Gets

To Grip With Poetry

O ne 'homework' topic at our last meeting at

Morley Library was to write a poem. Most

members made some very commendable

efforts, and following are some worthy of mention. The

form of these poems is in various styles. For example:

The following is an ETHERE poem -

All about Cat by Maxine Marshall

Cat Loves me On Sundays I’ll fill her bowl She purrs ... snuggles close Mondays Lou gives the grub Cat loves Lou ... snuggles sooo close

Snubs me ... she’s fed ... faithless feline. ◼

This poem is in a JAPANESE style -

Love Passed By by Margaret Summers

Straggly unkempt garden

Gone to seed Proud Owners long departed. Courageously determined The glory and colour of the roses remain Neglected They share their beauty with all who pass by Giving pleasure to their eyes Hoping that someone Some day Someone Will again cherish them

with the love that was Bestowed on them

When they were young and fragile. ◼ Lastly, this poem is a LANTERN style poem -

A Day in the Life of a Flower by Ginie Bristowe

Dawn Sun rising Daisy petals unfold Flowers softly close, at

Dusk. ◼

Veterinary and Life Sciences.

The facility has 350 volunteers and only

one paid member on the staff! They visit

schools on a regular basis. It can be visited

by appointment and night time tours are

also conducted, mostly at the weekend. It

is operated under policies and licensing

administration by the Parks and Wildlife

Service. Funding is by donation and some

sponsorship for specific projects. You can

adopt an animal/s to assist in the funding

and care of some animals.

We all had a most interesting and

informative morning. One member

purchased a charming silver bilby

ornament.

The excursion continued with lunch at

Embers Restaurant in Gooseberry Hill

which was enjoyed by all and everyone

seemed happy with the seniors’ lunch

menu arrangements. The trip home was

via the old Zig Zag railway road with many

wildflower shrubs in bloom. ◼

W e visited Kanyana on

Thursday 22 August as an

outing for Mid-North. We

were small in numbers, just seven in total;

however, it was a very interesting and

happy day.

Kanyana is a wildlife rehabilitation centre

for small native birds, animals and

reptiles, set in the hills at Lesmurdie. The

main headquarters, now heritage listed, is

a building which had been a Girl Guides

camp from 1954 to 2004 and which was

subsequently bequeathed to Kanyana in

2010.

Kanyana was founded by June Butcher

who looked after these small creatures at

her home in a purpose-built facility

constructed by her husband, Forrest,

until:

a: she became too well known;

b: there were too many of these creatures; and

c: she was unable to continue at this intimate level.

June was awarded a Member of the Order

of Australia in 2002 and is still very much

an ambassador for the protection of our

small native species.

We were shown around by the very

enthusiastic Christine and her helpers,

firstly with a PowerPoint video and then

interactive introduction to Henry, a very

boisterous red-tailed black cockatoo, a

friendly python, and Smuggles, a

bobtailed goanna - all permanent

residents. Next we met an echidna, a

woylie who wanted to stay asleep and an

enchanting bilby. Then we took a small

tour of the hospital where we met some

strange fat insects from the eastern coast

and two baby possums. Other buildings

were pointed out, such as quarantine and

a larger enclosed free-range area.

Kanyana has a small research program in

partnership with the Department of

Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions

and Murdoch University School of

where we interviewed members from the

Perth area. Our latest creation is being

edited as I write this, and it is an

interview with our former president

Valerie Buckley.

Jan Bowra, the latest member of our

team, talks to Valerie at her home in

Shoalwater. (Pictured) Jan and I spent a

pleasant afternoon chatting with Valerie

and enjoying her warm hospitality with

Watch out for Jan chatting with Valerie

on our website. It should be there by

the time this goes to print. ◼

Remember us? We are still here and

meeting the challenges of making videos

on a next-to-zero budget. And we think

we are winning! A lot of our projects have

involved Jenny Davis and Agelink and

more recently, Theatre 180.

Unfortunately, we are not allowed to put

these videos on the net because of

theatrical copyright. We don't own them,

although we can "show" them to a small

audience. Through all of this we have
