Like many summers for the Medical Alumni Association, this one kept us busy as we prepared for the new academic year. In July, we welcomed the new medical students during their orientation fair, where we shared with them the importance of being a member of our Student Alumni Association and the benefits associated with membership. We also hosted them and their families at one of Birmingham’s most popular spots, Regions Field, for a Barons game. I am looking forward to what this year will hold for our student programs.
I am equally excited about this year’s Medical Alumni Weekend. Please mark March 9-10, 2018, on your calendars. The class of 1968 will celebrate their 50th reunion, and the classes with years ending in 3 and 8 will meet for their class reunion dinners. If you are a member of these special groups, please watch and listen for more information so you don’t miss the opportunity to see your classmates. The CME topic for this year’s weekend will focus on precision medicine and IT security.
This issue of Informal Rounds will take a closer look at our students, featuring highlights on our welcome event, the White Coat Ceremony, entering class statistics, recipients of MAA scholarships, and much more. For those of you who have been out of medical school a few years, like me, it is eye opening to see everything these students are involved with while pursuing careers in medicine.
October 1 marked the new fiscal year. It is important we remember the impact our annual $100 dues make on the MAA and the programs it supports. At the beginning of October, our annual dues campaign landed in your mailbox or email inbox. Please take a moment to complete the form and send in your dues.
Sincerely,
Timothy P. Hecker, M.D. ’04

MS1 WELCOME EVENT
For the third year in a row, the Medical Alumni Association welcomed
first-year medical students and their families for a pre-White Coat Cere-
mony evening of fun at Regions Field as the Birmingham Barons played
the Chattanooga Lookouts. With 350 guests, this event was once again
successful in providing a lively setting for students to get to know each
other and celebrate the start of medical school.
The event featured a full meal and a door prize drawing for students
who joined the Student Alumni Association. Door prizes donated by
local vendors spotlight popular Birmingham and Alabama attractions to
students who are new to the area, including the Alabama Shakespeare
Festival in Montgomery, the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville,
and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.
WHITE COAT CEREMONY
On Sunday, August 13, the incoming class of medical students gathered
at the Alys Stephens Center to officially receive their new white coats,
provided by the Medical Alumni Association. This year a reception
honoring Legacy Families of the School of Medicine and the Martha
Myers Role Model Award Winners was held prior to the White Coat
Ceremony in the Abroms Patrons Lounge at the Alys Stephens Center.
A NEW BEGINNINGWHITE COAT WEEKEND WELCOMES THE INCOMING CLASS OF MEDICAL STUDENTS
3
For the entering class of 2021, there were 21 legacy families identified and invited to attend.
MAA President Tim Hecker welcomed all in attendance and expressed how important it is to the
Medical Alumni Association to recognize the value of our Legacy families and the accomplish-
ments of the students and alumni who are a part of that special group.
The White Coat Ceremony was developed in the 1990s by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation as a way
for medical schools to formally welcome new students into the medical profession and emphasize
the importance of compassion in medicine as well as scientific proficiency. Leaders from the School
of Medicine were seated on stage, while leaders from each of the school’s regional campuses in
Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, and Montgomery stood ready to help students don their white coats.
Selwyn M. Vickers, M.D., FACS, senior vice president for medicine and dean of the School of
Medicine, welcomed the students before introducing Christina Grabowski, Ph.D., the school’s new
associate dean for admissions and enrollment management (learn more on page 10). Dr. Grabowski
shared interesting facts about the Class of 2021 (see page 8) and highlighted some class members’
unique talents, including several musicians, an acapella choir singer, a documentary filmmaker, a
playwright, and even a trapeze artist.

Lisa L. Willett, M.D., the 2016 faculty recipient
of the Leonard Tow Award for Humanism in
Medicine and director of the Tinsley Harrison
Internal Medicine Residency, presented the
keynote address. “A transformation is about to
occur, and many things will change in your life,”
Willett told the class of 2021. “You’ll begin to
speak a new language. You’ll use words such as
leukocytosis, paresthesias, and perhaps if you’re
lucky, phlegmasia cerulea dolens (my favorite).
Your brains will stretch; they will hold more
facts than you thought humanly possible. You
will learn to survive with less sleep and more
coffee. You will learn to eat quickly or not at all.
And yes, it’s sad but true: Your handwriting will
deteriorate.”
Several awards were presented, including
the MAA-sponsored Martha Myers Role
Model Awards (learn more on page 6) and
the Brewer-Heslin Award for Professionalism
in Medicine. The Brewer-Heslin Award was
presented to Vineeta Kumar, M.D. Dr. Kumar
is an associate professor of medicine in the
Division of Nephrology, program director of
the Transplant Nephrology Fellowship Program,
and medical director of the UAB Incompatible
Kidney Transplant Program.

SARA CREWS FINLEY, M.D., LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP
The Sara Crews Finley, M.D., Endowed Lead-
ership Scholarship was presented to Lindsay
Sheets. Established by Dr. Sara Crews Finley’s
husband, Wayne H. Finley, M.D. ’60, Ph.D.,
and their children Sara J. Finley and Randall
W. Finley, M.D. ’83, the scholarship supports
students who demonstrate exceptional
academic and leadership abilities. It includes
full tuition for the third year of medical school
and is renewable for the fourth year.
Along with Dr. Wayne Finley, Dr. Sara Crews
Finley co-founded the first medical genetics
program in the southeastern U.S. She also
became the first female co-director of the
Laboratory of Medical Genetics at UAB, a
position she held for more than 30 years. Even
with her enormous contributions to the field
of genetics, she found her greatest passion
was her service to patients and their families
referred for genetic evaluation. Sheets mirrors
Dr. Finley’s commitment to serving others.
Sheets’ record includes being heavily involved
with the Equal Access Birmingham Clinic,
the medical student-run free clinic for the
underserved. She served as the research officer
during her second year and was chosen as
co-coordinator for the Global Health Interest
Group during her first year as an M.D./M.P.H.
student. In that role, Sheets helped first-year
students interested in global health plan
summer research trips. “We helped one student
plan a trip to Uganda and recruit students to
go,” says Sheets. “It was such a great group,
and I miss getting to be there all the time now
that I am in the hospital.”
Sheets is no stranger to the hospital. Three
weeks after being born in a small town in
Kentucky, she underwent heart surgery when
it was discovered she had a coarctation of
the aorta and bicuspid aortic valve. Later, she
became part of a clinical trial to see if ACE
inhibitors were effective for controlling blood
pressure in children. “I was up there every
week and got very used to being in that type
of environment,” says Sheets. “Since then, I
have always felt really comfortable in a doctor’s
office.
“Being honored with this award, with Dr. Sara
Crews Finley’s name, reminds me that not only
can I overcome the stumbles and struggles
I’ve faced and will face in my personal life and
medical career, but I can also conquer them.”

Wickliffe J. “Wick” Many Jr., M.D., was
born and raised in New Orleans, the son
of a switchboard operator and a railroad
deliveryman. After earning a Bachelor
of Science in Zoology at Louisiana State
University, Dr. Many graduated from the
University of Alabama School of Medicine
in 1973.
Dr. Many completed his medical internship, one year of residency in
diagnostic radiology, and a residency and chief resident year in internal
medicine at the School of Medicine. He pursued his infectious disease
fellowship training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical
School from 1978 to 1979 and returned to the School of Medicine to train
as a fellow the following year.
Dr. Many became the assistant program director of the UAB Montgomery
Internal Medicine Residency Program in 1985. In 1999, he was promoted
to program director and continued his efforts to create a center of
excellence of medical education and patient care at UAB Health Center-
Montgomery. He has maintained an active practice in infectious diseases,
with clinical interests that include the prevention of maternal-to-child
transmission of HIV. He has been selected as one of The Best Doctors in
America 10 times.
In November 2012, Dr. Many was appointed regional dean of the UAB
School of Medicine Montgomery Regional Campus. After leading the
Montgomery Regional Campus for nearly five years, he has announced he
will retire as regional dean in December.
Dr. Many and his wife of 40 years, CheeChee, live in Eclectic, Alabama. He
is the proud father of two sons, Benjamin and Wickliffe Joseph Many III.
Sandra King Parker, M.D., was raised in
DeFuniak Springs, Florida. She graduated
from the University of Alabama in 1982 with
an honors bachelor’s degree in biology.
Dr. Parker attended medical school and
completed residency training in psychiatry
at the University of Alabama School of
Medicine. She completed her fellowship in
child/adolescent psychiatry at the University
MARTHA MYERS ROLE MODEL AWARD WINNERSEach year, the MAA presents the Martha Myers Role Model Award to three distinguished alumni. Martha C. Myers, M.D. ’71, served as a medical missionary in Yemen until her death at the hands of a Yemeni extremist in 2002. Dr. Myers’ life serves as a reminder of how physicians are integral members of a greater community that extends beyond patient care. It is in the spirit of service for others in all aspects of life that the MAA recognizes the recipients of the Martha Myers Role Model Award.

of Arkansas for the Health Sciences in Little Rock. She is dual certified by
the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in adult psychiatry and
child/adolescent psychiatry.
From 1992 to 1999, Dr. Parker served as medical director for Altacare
of Pensacola, Florida. During that time, she also served as a child and
adolescent psychiatrist for then Mobile Mental Health Center, which is
now AltaPointe Health Systems. Dr. Parker was named AltaPointe’s chief
medical officer in 2000. During her tenure, the organization has grown
from 300 employees to more than 1,400 employees.
Dr. Parker has received numerous appointments, honors, and awards.
Among others, she was appointed by Alabama Governor Bob Riley as
a member of the Alabama Interagency Autism Coordinating Council
and is past president of the Mobile Bay Psychiatric Association and past
president of the Alabama Psychiatric Physicians Association. In 2015 and
2016, she was awarded the Red Sash Award by the University of South
Alabama (USA) College of Medicine, where she is the vice-chair for the
Department of Psychiatry. The American Psychiatric Association awarded
Dr. Parker the 2012 Bruno Lima Award, which honors contributions to the
care of disaster victims. She is currently an appointed board member
of the Statewide Health Coordinating Council Inpatient Psychiatric
Commission, the Alabama Medicaid RCO Quality Assurance Committee,
and the Mobile County Domestic Violence Taskforce.
She and her husband of 31 years, Jim Parker, M.D., a gastroenterologist
and fellow School of Medicine alumnus, have two children, Colbert
“Colby” Parker, M.D., currently an internal medicine resident at USA
College of Medicine, and Courtney Parker, who is in her final year of
dental school at the UAB School of Dentistry. The Parkers also have a
four-legged child, Penny, their 1-year-old English bulldog.
Amie B. (Jackson) McLain, M.D., was born
and raised in Florida, but calls Alabama
home. She she earned a bachelor’s in
microbiology from the University of
Alabama in 1980. She earned her medical
degree from the School of Medicine at UAB
in 1984.
In her last year of medical school, Dr.
McLain’s father developed metastatic cancer that resulted in the collapse
of his spine and paralysis. It was at that time she discovered the field
of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. This specialty embodied what
medicine represented to her, where the whole person was treated to
achieve maximum health and function. She completed her residency at
UAB and, when asked to remain as UAB faculty, she subspecialized in
spinal cord injury (SCI) medicine and neuro-rehabilitation.
Dr. McLain is a board-certified physiatrist with a long history of research
and clinical care activities involving spinal cord injured individuals. In 1997,
she was appointed chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation, becoming the second woman and the youngest person
ever to chair a UAB clinical department. In 2007, she was appointed
chief of staff during the first years of the health system’s acquisition
of UAB Highlands. She is also the founder and director of the nation’s
first Women’s Clinic for the Disabled at the Spain Rehabilitation Center,
which resulted in her serving on the first National Institutes of Health
Committee for Health of Women with Disabilities.
“Being a good leader is looking at the positives, following the truth, and
respecting diversity as well as individuality,” she says.

MEET MS1 CLASS PRESIDENT DANIEL SARRAF
Where are you from? I was born in Montreal, Canada.
My parents moved (back) to Israel six months later, and we lived there until I was about three. We then moved to Los Angeles, where my father works as a dentist at the University of Southern California. We moved
back and forth between Israel and LA, but I spent the majority of my youth in Israel. I moved back to LA permanently after I finished my military service in Israel in 2011, and I attended undergrad at UCLA.
What specialties interest you and why?Vision offers the chance to mix medicine and surgery, to integrate pre- and post-surgery care, to combine both clinical expertise and compassion, and to specifically deal with the challenging, unfortunate outcome of vision reduction or loss.
Why did you choose UAB for medical school? UAB was my top choice for several reasons. First, I really liked the research environment here. UAB has numerous internationally renowned researchers, and I knew it would be fertile ground to learn and work in a great lab. Second, since I come from a big city, I liked the warmth and friendliness of the faculty and people in general; in a metropolis like Los Angeles, that is hard to come by. Third, the medical education here is quite good; from the basic sciences to the clinic, UAB has all the tools necessary to provide both a superior education and experience. I had heard this from a friend prior to starting classes, and I now see how accurate the description is.

Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, and Henry Ford are
extraordinary talents who hail from Michigan.
The Great Lakes State also fostered a talent
in education, Christina Grabowski, Ph.D., who
began her career in undergraduate admissions
and admissions and enrollment management
at one of the state’s top-rated academic
institutions, Oakland University.
Dr. Grabowski later became the assistant dean
of its William Beaumont School of Medicine,
a role she began in 2009 that has prepared
her for her current role as UAB School of
Medicine’s new associate dean of admissions
and enrollment management.
Dr. Grabowski spoke to Medical Alumni
Association board members at the spring board
meeting, where she answered questions about
her training, the applications process, and the
holistic review process. Below is an excerpt
from that question-and-answer session.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND?
I’ve been an admissions professional for
my entire career that spans over 20 years. I
was the founding admissions dean for a new
medical school in Michigan. My doctorate is in
educational leadership and higher education
administration, which involved learning a lot of
policy, efficiency, and student development. My
research has been in holistic admissions review
by finding out how we can holistically look at
students to determine who is going to meet
the needs of our patient population. I have
also been involved with the AAMC’s Advancing
Holistic Review Initiative and its national
admissions committee.
Q: CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE APPLICATION PROCESS?
Applicants apply to AMCAS, the
centralized application service. If they are
Alabama residents and U.S. citizens or
permanent residents and have a 495 or
higher on the new MCAT, they receive our
secondary application and move forward to be
reviewed in the process. If they are out-of-state
applicants, they have to have the 495 MCAT
score, citizenship or permanent residency, and
at least a 3.4 grade point average either in
undergraduate, post-baccalaureate or graduate
coursework. That’s new starting last year
because we have so many applicants—about
BUILDING A STUDENT BODYA Q&A WITH NEW ADMISSIONS ASSOCIATE DEAN CHRISTINA GRABOWSKI
11
4,000 each year. Applications are holistically
reviewed by faculty to determine who should
be invited for an interview.
We invite approximately 450-500 applicants to
interview for 186 spots. Some of those spots are
already filled by our rural medical scholars and
our EMSAP (Early Medical School Acceptance
Program) students. The interview process
involves one traditional interview and then
multiple mini interviews. Then, the interviewed
applicants are reviewed by our Admissions
Selection Committee for a final decision.
Q: HOW DO YOU RECRUIT APPLICANTS?
We have a team of folks going out
to universities across the state, and we’re
broadening our reach this year. We’re trying
to get out to more of our communities
within Alabama, and we have a
new recruiter from our Office of
Diversity and Inclusion who is part of
expanding our reach. We are building
relationships and getting the word
out about what we’re looking for even
more than we have in the past.
Q: WHAT IS HOLISTIC ADMISSIONS REVIEW?
Some people get the idea that
holistic admissions review involves
bringing in students who aren’t
prepared. That’s not true. Students
need to be able to handle the rigors
of medicine and standardized exams
for the rest of their lives. Previous
academic performance is important
because previous grades help predict future
grades, and previous test scores help predict
future test scores. However, we have some
students who have lower test scores—just not
great test takers—but have the discipline and
the ability to do well academically. We need to
take grades and test scores into consideration
together. In addition, we look at their trend in
grades, where they went to school, and the
rigor of their work to determine if they are
academically prepared.
In addition to looking at academics, we want
to evaluate what kind of physician applicants
are likely to be. We look at their motivation
for medicine and their understanding and
appreciation for the physician/patient
relationship. We look at their community
service, leadership and research experiences.
We evaluate their interpersonal skills and
communication skills—certainly their integrity
and honesty. We look at applicants as
individuals—how they’ve prepared for a career
in medicine, how they are likely to contribute
to medicine in the state of Alabama, and of
course, whether they can handle the academic
rigors of medicine. The holistic admissions
review process involves all these factors.

DEAN’S LETTER
With a new academic year in full swing, I’m excited
about the positive momentum I see in all our mission
areas, and especially in medical education. This is due
in large part to the strong leadership of Craig Hoesley,
M.D., our senior associate dean for medical education.
Under Dr. Hoesley’s direction, we are continuing to
incorporate more active, team-based learning into our
curriculum (which research shows increases knowledge
retention and enhances problem-solving skills as well
as teamwork and leadership skills).
We are also working to enhance our Learning
Communities as social and emotional “homes” for
our students, and as venues for discussing topics
suitable for small groups, such as medical ethics, study
skills, managing finances, and coping with stress.
In September, we were honored to host more than
160 medical students, faculty, and administrators
from 40 medical schools across the U.S. and Mexico
at the Learning Communities Institute’s 14th annual
conference. The conference provided workshops,
group discussions, and presentations on a wide variety
of topics, including innovative curricula, teaching and
mentoring techniques, and student and physician
well-being.
Dr. Hoesley was also instrumental in recruiting our
new associate dean for admissions and enrollment
management, Christina Grabowski, Ph.D. Dr.
Grabowski brings a deep knowledge of medical
school admissions and the holistic admissions process,
and we are immensely pleased to have her on our
team. If you haven’t yet, go back and read the Q&A
with her on page 10 of this newsletter; I’m sure you
will find her insights compelling. Dr. Grabowski was a
guest at an alumni reception in Mobile earlier this year,
and I hope you will have more opportunities to meet
her at future events.
Finally, we continue to make exciting progress in the
Campaign for UAB, the largest, most comprehensive
fundraising initiative in the university’s history. As you
can see from the graphic on this page, our ambitious
$1 billion goal is coming ever closer on the horizon.
Alumni are integral to the School of Medicine’s
philanthropic efforts, and I extend my gratitude to
all those who have made gifts and pledges. If you’d
like to learn more about giving to the School of
Medicine, contact Jackie Wood, Executive Director of
Development, at (205) 996-0815 or [email protected].

LEARNING THROUGH GIVINGSERVICE LEARNING PROGRAMS ENHANCE MEDICAL EDUCATION
In recent years, service learning has become an increasingly key element
of the medical school curriculum, one that helps reinforce lessons about
the importance of compassion in the practice of medicine and the myriad
ways that health care (and lack thereof) affects people’s lives. The School
of Medicine has developed several new service learning programs, in
response to both accreditation standards and growing student demand.
Service is at the core of the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship (ASF), which
was founded in 1940 to support Schweitzer’s charity hospital in Gabon,
Africa. Today, the ASF works to develop a corps of professionals skilled
in creating positive change in their communities and within the broader
health care and human service systems. Each year, approximately 250
graduate students in a variety of fields are selected as Albert Schweitzer
Fellows. Each fellow partners with a community-based organization to
develop and conduct a yearlong service project.
In 2015, UAB established the organization’s 13th U.S.-based chapter
housed at the School of Medicine. This spring, the second class of
Alabama Schweitzer Fellows was named, including four School of
Medicine students:
• Caroline Fuller (MS2) is addressing childhood nutrition and exercise
in the East Lake community by creating a nutrition curriculum for the
Promoting Empowerment and Enrichment Resources’ (P.E.E.R., Inc.)
summer camp at East Lake United Methodist Church.
• Ashleigh Burns Irwin (MS2) is working to improve health literacy in
children kindergarten through second grade through the creation
and implementation of a healthy lifestyle curriculum for the YMCA of
Greater Birmingham Youth Center’s after-school program.
• Koushik Kasanagottu (MS4) is focusing on the lack of access to
quality nutrition information for disadvantaged groups by developing
a lifestyle checklist that contains evidence-based guidelines to
prevent or manage chronic diseases. His community partner site is
University Medical Center in Tuscaloosa.
• Carson Klein (MS2) is addressing the effects of social isolation on
the elderly in Birmingham. She is developing a volunteer program
that pairs medical students with socially isolated vulnerable seniors
currently enrolled in the UAB House Calls Program.

CONFRONTING HEALTH INEQUITIES
This year, the School of Medicine’s Office of
Service Learning launched a new program
aimed at providing medical students with
the skills and training they need to work with
medically underserved populations. The Health
Equity Scholars Program gives students an
understanding of the social determinants of
health, such as social environment, physical
environment, economic status, and health
services. The program also aims to provide
students with expertise in a specific area of
health disparities and population health, as well
as an understanding of common issues that
medical professionals who care for underserved
communities confront.
The program has five major components:
• 15 hours of School of Medicine Service
Learning electives by graduation
• 40 hours of direct service work by the start
of the MS3 year
• A scholarly project (research, education,
etc.) examining health equity issues
• Teaching preclinical students for four hours
during the MS4 year
• Health Equity Scholars Program training
sessions in all four years of medical school
Seven second-year medical students have been
selected for the inaugural class of Health Equity
Scholars: Kelsie Dodson, Hannah Hashimi,
Winston Joe, Shreya Kashyap, Callie Perkins,
Michael Puccinelli, and Jamiko Rose.
“We are excited to provide this expanded
learning opportunity for select students
who are motivated to provide quality care to
underserved populations,” says Kristin Boggs,
director of the Office of Service Learning. “We
believe this opportunity weaves together their
volunteerism, coursework, and scholarly work to
allow them to dive deeper in a particular topic
and become both culturally competent and
committed to health equity.”
GENEROSITY RUNS IN COMMON
The Equal Access Birmingham (EAB) Clinic
hosted the Fourth Annual Heart + Sole 5K on
Saturday, August
26. MAA was once
again a sponsor of
the race, which this
year returned to
the Crestline area
of Mountain Brook.
Approximately
200 runners ran in the 5K and more than 30
people participated in a “Sleep-In Option,”
which allowed them to donate and receive a
T-shirt without running in the race. Preliminary
totals indicate the race raised approximately
$24,000-$25,000 to benefit the medical
student-run health clinic for the uninsured
and the underserved in the Birmingham
area. Each year, School of Medicine
departments compete to see who can field
the most participants in the 5K. This year
the Department of Medicine edged out the
Department of Surgery by only one runner. In
addition to friends and family, UAB’s mascot,
Blaze, and UAB cheerleaders were there
to cheer on the runners of many ages who
participated.

A LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE LEARNING COMMUNITIES ARE RENAMED TO HONOR KEY FIGURES FROM SCHOOL OF MEDICINE HISTORY
BARFIELD-CARTER COMMUNITY
In 1945, Melson Barfield-Carter, M.D., became the first female faculty member at the School of Medicine and the first female to be named a department chair (of the Department of Radiology).
FINLEY COMMUNITY
Wayne Finley, M.D., Ph.D., and Sara Crews Finley, M.D., became pioneers in the field of medical genetics when they co-founded the Laboratory of Medical Genetics, the first center of its kind in the Southeast, in 1962.
HAMILTON COMMUNITY
Herschell Lee Hamilton, M.D., came to Birmingham in 1958 as its first African-American, board-certified general surgeon. He was the first African-American to receive operating privileges at University Hospital.
HARRISON COMMUNITY
Tinsley Harrison, M.D., served as both the first chair of medicine and the second dean at the Medical College of Alabama. He is best known as the founding editor and editor-in-chief of the first five editions of Harrison’s
Principles of Internal Medicine.
HILL COMMUNITY
Longtime School of Medicine faculty member Samuel Richardson (Dick) Hill Jr., M.D., served as president of UAB from 1977 to 1986. He was appointed dean of the Medical College of Alabama in 1962 and remained there as it
evolved into UAB.
HIRSCHOWITZ COMMUNITY
Basil Hirschowitz, M.D., Ph.D., is a medical pioneer who, along with his colleagues, invented the first fiberoptic endoscope that became the standard for visualizing and treating virtually every cavity in the body.
Since their creation in 2011, Learning Communities, led by faculty mentors of various disciplines, have helped our medical students navigate medical school while maintaining physical and mental well-being. Students in six of the Learning Communities recently had a chance to choose new names for their groups based on a list of leaders and luminaries from our school’s past and present. The students selected the following names: Barfield-Carter, Finley, Hamilton, Lyons, McCallum, and Oparil. Here is the full list of the Learning Communities and the noteworthy figures who inspired their names.
19
KIRKLIN COMMUNITY
In the 1950s, while at the Mayo Clinic, John Kirklin, M.D., performed the world’s first series of open heart operations using a heart-lung machine. Kirklin joined the UAB faculty in 1966 as chair of the Department of Surgery and
the surgeon-in-chief for UAB Hospital.
LYONS COMMUNITY
Champ Lyons, M.D., arrived in Birmingham in 1950 to become the first full-time chair of surgery, a position he retained until his passing in 1965.
MCCALLUM COMMUNITY
Charles “Scotty” McCallum Jr., D.M.D., M.D., earned a medical degree from the Medical College of Alabama in 1957 and became dean of the School of Dentistry in 1962. He later served as director of UAB Medical Center before becoming the third
president of UAB in 1987.
OPARIL COMMUNITY
Suzanne Oparil, M.D., is a renowned cardiologist and a member of the prestigious National Academy of Medicine. She is a distinguished professor of medicine at UAB and director of the UAB Vascular Biology and Hypertension
Program.
PITTMAN COMMUNITY
As the School of Medicine’s longest-serving dean— 19 years, from 1973 to 1992—James Pittman Jr., M.D., left an indelible mark. He is remembered for recruiting renowned physicians and scientists from across the U.S.
STUDENTS BOND AT LEARNING COMMUNITY OLYMPICS
For about the past five years, the Medical
Student Services office has hosted the annual
Learning Community (LC) Olympics at
orientation. The purpose of the LC Olympics
is to create a sense of friendly competition
among the 11 different groups and allow
members of the various Learning Communities
to get to know each other better and bond.
As part of this year’s LC Olympics, students
participated in a variety of events, including
dodgeball, basketball, kickball, swimming
relay, and table tennis. Students interested in
participating in nonphysical activities joined
events like a Jenga tournament, a cooking
competition, or a pool tournament. Each
Learning Community rotated through the
events, collecting points for the ones they
won. This year’s winner was the Hamilton
Learning Community.
“The LC Olympics give students a chance to
take a break from studying, allowing them to
participate in physical and mental activities
that promote a well-rounded physician-in-
training,” says Jason Noah, program director
for student success at Medical Student
Services.
