Ken Jarrold CBE is Chair of the Programme Board for Rebalancing Medicines Legislation and Pharmacy Regulation.

AWARD OF FELLOWSHIP 2013Being appointed a Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society NI is one of the highest honours that can be bestowed upon our members. It is an honour which recognises those individuals who have attained distinction in a particular aspect or aspects of their pharmacy career.This year the Fellowship panel approved three nominations for Fellowship, these have been awarded to the following:

50 YEARS SERVICEAcknowledgement of those pharmacists whohave remained on the Pharmacy registerdelivering over 50 years of service to theircommunity or practice.

Sarah Mawhinney

GOLD MEDAL WINNERSUndergraduate Gold Medal Winners awardedto the overall top student in final yearPharmacy in 2012-13

Sarah served on the Pharmaceutical Contractors Committee and the Council of the Pharmaceutical Society NI. She also sat on the Central Pharmaceutical Advisory Committee, Pharmaceutical Advisory and Drug and Therapeutics committees Northern Board, Pharmacy Practices Committee, National Appeal Panel and as pharmacy representative on A&B LHSCG. She is a member and Company Secretary of the Board of Northern Pharmacies Ltd and a Trustee of NPL Trust Fund.

Sarah has always had a keen interest in developing new services which could be delivered by community pharmacists and over the years has been involved with numerous projects such as prescribing advice for GP practices, repeat dispensing and connected health. She was one of the first pharmacists to engage with Building the Community Pharmacy Partnership and has always had a keen interest in promoting Public Health initiatives.

Sarah graduated from Queen’s University Belfast in 1977 and after completing pre-registration training at St James Hospital, Leeds she registered as a pharmacist in 1978.

After working in hospital pharmacy she joined a community pharmacy in Bermuda for four years. On returning she purchased a pharmacy in Belfast and in 1985 opened a pharmacy in Cloughmills. Sarah joined the Executive Committee of the Ulster Chemists Association (UCA) and became President in 1995. During this time she was involved in developing the UCA magazine, the Annual conference, business events and links with other organisations.

Professor David Jones

Since 1999, he has held a personal Chair (in Biomaterial Sciences) at the School of Pharmacy, Queens University Belfast. His research concerns the characterisation, formulation and engineering of pharmaceutical materials/dosage forms and biomedical devices. He is the author of two textbooks, six patents and over 400 research papers/communications and has been awarded the Lilly prize for pharmaceutical research and the British Pharmaceutical Conference Science Award.

Professor Jones is both a Chartered Engineer and a Chartered Chemist and is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and Member of the Institute of Engineers in Ireland. He is the Editor of the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology and holds the prestigious position of a Royal Society Industrial Fellow.

In 1985, David graduated with a first class honours BSc in Pharmacy, he went on to attain a PhD in Pharmaceutics in 1988, and in 2006, a DSc, all from Queen’s University Belfast (QUB).

He registered with the Pharmaceutical Society NI in 1989 and the Pharmaceutical Society of New Zealand in 1990. From 1989-1992 he was a lecturer in Pharmaceutics at the University of Otago and from 1992-1994 he held the position of Head of Formulations at Norbrook Industries Limited.

In 1994 he was appointed to a lectureship at the School of Pharmacy, QUB and was promoted to a Senior Lectureship in 1997.

Neil GordonNeil graduated from Pharmacy at Bradford University in 1974, before completing his pre-registration year at Connors Chemists in Warrenpoint.

Neil performed various roles with Connors Chemists including opening, establishing and managing their new Pharmacy in Banbridge in 1975, which culminated being appointed as a Director. In 1978, he moved to London to manage a community pharmacy with a view to owning his own pharmacy. In 1979, he returned to Northern Ireland and in May 1980, in partnership with his brother Robert, Neil purchased Mc Knight's Pharmacy in Donaghadee.

In 1996, they opened a Head Office and Distribution Centre in Banbridge, and from 1996 to present day, the business and Head Office grew to its current size: 49 Pharmacies and 3 Health and Beauty Stores in Northern Ireland and 9 Pharmacies in Scotland.

Neil also sits on many voluntary organisation’s boards and committees both inside and outside Pharmacy, for example he is a trustee of the Lighthouse Trust, a co-founder of the Donaghadee Community Workforce and long standing member of Belfast Chamber of Trade and Commerce (BCTC) & Belfast City Centre Management (BCCM) to name but a few.

DesmondAustin

Desmond graduated in 1962 and first worked as a locum in the greater Belfast area before taking up a six month position in Canavan’s Pharmacy in Portadown.

This was followed by six months in Brogan’s Chemist in Lisburn after which Desmond took up a position as a medical representative with Crookes Laboratories for next three years.

In 1966 Desmond started working for Warner Lambert, again as a medical representative before opening Austin’s Pharmacy on the Cregagh Road where he worked as a community pharmacist for 45 years.
