Chumphon province is located in the most upper part of thesouthern region. It is known as the gateway to the southernborder towns. The province is administratively divided into 8Amphoes (districts) : Mueang Chumphon, Lamae, Lang Suan,Pathio, Phato, Sawi, Tha Sae and Thung Tako. Chumphon hasbeen able to maintain plenty of natural resources for tourismwhich have been untouched by the tourists and unspoiled by thetime. Chumphon is an elongated province with 220 kms. ofcoastline offering many fine-sand beaches and attractiveoffshore islands. There are plenty of opportunities for sunbath-ing, swimming, yachting, paragliding, diving and snorkeling.

AttractionsAmphoe Mueang Chumphon(Õ”‡¿Õ‡¡◊Õß™ÿ¡æ√)Prince of Chumphon Shrine(»“≈‡®â“æàÕ°√¡À≈«ß™ÿ¡æ√)This place is in Mu 7 Tambon Hat Sai Ri. It is 20 kms. fromChumphon city center, along the highways 4119 and 4098. Thisis a sacred place for the people of Chumphon and nearbyprovinces.At the shrine stands the monument of Admiral PhraBorommawong Thoe Kromluang Chumphon Khet Udomsak.The shrine is at the north site of Hat Sai Ri facing towards thesea. There is a museum with exhibits about the admiral’sbiography and things which he used. A large torpedo-shipnamed the Royal Chumphon is also here. It is 68 meters longand 6.55 meters wide. This ship was decommissioned onNovember 26, 1975. The Royal Thai Navy turned over the shipto Chumphon province in 1979. After that it was placed nearthis monument for the commemoration of the admiral.

Hat Sai Ri(À“¥∑√“¬√’)About 20 kms. along highway No.4119 and No.4098 withregular bus services from the town center, this long smoothwhite sand and extensive beach is shaded by majestic pine treesand affords some spectacular views of nearby islands. Forhistorical interest, a monument commemorating the lateAdmiral Prince of Chumphon is located nearby, complete with awell-preserved WW II warship. A hillside temple at the siteoffers a panoramic view of the entire area.

Khao Chao Mueang(‡¢“‡®â“‡¡◊Õß)About 2.4 kms. from Hat Sai Ri is Khao Chao Mueang, thedistrict’s highest observation point offering panoramic views ofthe coast and far out into the distant archipelago are rivaled onlyby the peace and tranquility offered by the secluded beachlocated at the base of the mountain.

Ao Thung Makham(Õà“«∑ÿàß¡–¢“¡)This place is divided into outer Ao Thung Makham and innerAo Thung Makham.The bays look like a line of 2 semicircles.Roughly in the middle lies a peninsula, where rocks, large andsmall, are scattered surround in a mysterious fashion. Thispeninsula serves as the bays divider. On the north side lies theinner Ao Thung Makham whose white sand beach stretches for1 km. lined with coconut trees. The distances of the inner andouter Ao Thung Makham from Chumphon city center are 27kms. and 31 kms. respectively using the same highways asgoing to Hat Sai Ri with the directions shown along the way.

Ko Samet(‡°“–‡ ¡Á¥)One of the group of islands which belongs to the Chumphon’sNational Marine Park.This island is at Mu 1 Tambon Pak Nam,about 8 kms. from Chumphon city. To get there, first, take a busalong the highway No.4119 (Chumphon-Pak Nam) about 17kms. Then from this place, take the boat from the shore for 30

minutes to get there. There are beaches at the head, and themiddle of this island. It is the Chumphon’s largest island withthe end of it, is the big well. This island is crowned withcoconut trees making it a suitable place for spending holidaysand relaxation.

Chumphon National Museum(æ‘æ‘∏¿—≥± ∂“π·Ààß™“µ‘™ÿ¡æ√)Any trip to Chumphon should start at the national museum.Established in 1995 at Khao Samkaew, the museum provides anoverview of province, ranging from prehistory through to thepresent. Even for those who are not overly interested in history,the museum’s attractive displays and media resources willfascinate and inform. Khao Phang Forest Park(«πÕÿ∑¬“π‡¢“æ“ß)About 12 kms. south of the town, bordering Amphoe MueangChumphon and Amphoe Tha Sae, about KM. 493 alonghighway No.4. Khao Phang Forest Park is one of the province’snewest attractions. Within the national park, there are a greatvariety of tropical trees, making the park a shady and restfulsojourn for nature lovers and a must for students of forestry.A hill, covering an area of about one square kilometer, is locatedbehind the park providing a commanding view of the entirearea.

Wat Chao Fa Sala Loi(«—¥‡®â“øÑ“»“≈“≈Õ¬)This temple is about 8 kms. from the town municipal area onthe Chumphon - Ao Thung Wua Laen Road. To get there travelalong an asphalt road for 6 kms. and continue the journey alonga brick road for another 2 kms. At this temple lived Luang PhoSong Chanthasaro, a famous religious teacher who passed awayat the age of nearly 100 years and his body still remainsundecayed. This monk is revered by the people of Chumphonand nearby provinces.

Ko Tao(‡°“–‡µà“)The island, is 45 kms. from Amphoe Ko Pha-ngan, Surat ThaniProvince, can easily be reached from the coastline of Chumphon

which is 60 kms. away. Historically, it was once the detentionplace for political prisoners similar to Ko Tarutao of SatunProvince. This small island with the area of only 20 squarekilometers is a paradise for swimmers as well as for skin andscuba divers. It is well known as the best diving site in the Gulfof Thailand, its turquoise water is crystalline, coconut planta-tions cover much of the landscape and many beaches are easilyaccessible by paved road. Getting around the island is either bypick-up taxi or by boat, and moterbikes or mountain bikes areavailable for rent to explore the island. Tourists or visitorwishing to stay overnight will not be disappointed by thevarious types and prices of accommodations the island is readyto offer.

Amphoe Lang Suan (Õ”‡¿ÕÀ≈—ß «π)Somdech Phra Srinagarindra Park( «π ¡‡¥Á®æ√–»√’π§√‘π∑√åœ)This park is in Mu 7 Tambon Tha Maphla about 7 kms. fromAmphoe Lang Suan. The park is accessible by car and a goodplace for relaxation. The park consists of a hill by a rivers.Flowers and plants decorate the area at the foot of the hill.There is also a monument to the present King’s mother.

Tham Khao Ngoen(∂È”‡¢“‡ß‘π)This cave is in the same area as the park. King Rama V theGreat graciously had a pagoda built in front of it to commemo-rate his first visit to Lang Suan in 1889. The cave’s interiorlooks like a big hall or tent. There is a chimney going throughthe top. The cave’s wall is also inscribed with his Majesty’sinitial Chor.Por.Ror.

Tham Khao Kriab(∂È”‡¢“‡°√’¬∫)This is a famous cave and is accessible by car. It is about 80 kms.from the city center along Chumphon-Lang Suan Route or 10kms. from Amphoe Lang Suan. There are many stalagmitesinside. There is a monk residence at the foot of the hill fromwhich 370 steps leading to the cave begin.

Ko Phithak(‡°“–æ‘∑—°…å)This island is in Tambon Bang Nam Chuet and is one kilometerfrom the shore. The island has beautiful rocks and many fishingvillages. When the tide is low you can walk from the shore tothe island. Tel. 08 1093 1443, 08 9018 0644

Amphoe Thung Tako (Õ”‡¿Õ∑àÿßµ–‚°)Namtok Thap Chang(πÈ”µ°∑—∫™â“ß)This is the most beautiful waterfall in Khlong Phrao NationalPark, situated at Mu 5, Tambon Tako. Amphoe Thung Tako. It issurrounded with various varieties of trees, and many differenttypes of animals live here. To get there, travel along highwayNo.41 until you come to a police booth at Sammai, Lang Suancross-road. Then turn right into a brick road and go on foranother 15 kms. The waterfall is about 65 kms. from the citycenter.

Suan Nai Dum or Nai Dum Orange Orchard( «π â¡π“¬¥”)The variety tropical fruit garden, which growth many kinds offruits, such as orange, papaya, durian mangoesteen, and dragonfruits. Also the fruits dessert product, as famous souvenir fromChumphon province. Hat Arunothai(À“¥Õ√ÿ‚≥∑—¬)Arunothai beach on the Tako river estuary is a scenic area. Toget there from the Phetchakasem highway, turn left to HighwayNo.4096 for 6 kms. The serene beach, is lined with pine treesaffording shady resting places. There is also a shrine-memorialto Prince Chumphon erected here. From Arunothai beach, boatscan be hired to visit many off-shore islands.

The fishing village at Ban Ao Mamuang is located further onabout 14 kms. The typical fishing community has a quiet andrelaxing ambience. The lines of coconut trees forming thebackdrop adds colour and life to the scene.

Amphoe Tha Sae (Õ”‡¿Õ∑à“·´–)Tham Rap Ro (Wat Thep Charoen)∂È”√—∫√àÕ («—¥‡∑懮√‘≠)Located in Tambon Tha Kham about 15 kms. from thePathomphon intersection. This foothill temple cave actuallyconsists of two adjacent caves, Ai Tay and Sai, which are both,according to legend, purported to contain hidden treasure, TheAi Tay Cave houses an old Buddha image known affectionatelyas Luang Pho Lak Mueang, or the town god’s revered grandfa-ther. Hin Chang Spirit House(»“≈‡®â“æàÕµ“À‘π™â“ß)Between kilometers 453 and 454 on the Phetchakasem highwayin Mu. 2 Tambon Salui, a spirit house was installed for therevered god of the stone elephant image.

Amphoe Sawi (Õ”‡¿Õ «’)Wat Phra That Tham Khwan Mueang(«—¥æ√–∏“µÿ¢«—≠‡¡◊Õß)Located about 2 kms. from the District office of Sawi or about48 kms. from the provincial town of Chumphon along theHighway No. 41. It is a fascinating temple perched on top ofa limestone hill. Besides possessing a commanding view amidtranquil surrounding, the temple’s stupas house reveredBuddha’s relics.

Wat Phra That Sawi(«—¥æ√–∏“µÿ «’)This temple is near Sawi River. It is 47 kms. from the city

center along Highway No.41, Chumphon-Lang Suan route.According to legend, Phra Chao Si Thamma Sokarat and hisarmy took a rest in Sawi District where they had strangeexperience. Albino crows and other types of crows flockedtogether above the debris of a ruined structure. His Majesty,therefore, issued an order to remove the debris. After removingit, they found a large pagoda. When they dug the ground deeper,they found a jar containing the Buddha’s relics. So, His Majestyhad his men build a new pagoda over the old one. The construc-tion could have taken place in the Ayutthaya Era. In 1916 arepair was done. A new structure was made over the old one. Atthe front of the temple next to Sawi River stands a shrine wherea human-size effigy is kept. People in Sawi District call thisshrine“San Phra Suea Mueang”

Hat Sai Ri Sawi(À“¥∑√“¬√’ «’)It is the most beautiful in the district. It is in Mu 8, Tambon ThaHin. It is a large sand beach parallel to a long line of manycoconut trees. This beach is good for relaxation and enjoyingthe atmosphere of fishermen’s lives. Tourists can get thereeasily by car, traveling along Highway No.41, Chumphon-Sawiroute, turn left into an asphalt road, Sawi-Bor Kha route and goon for about 6 kilometers, then turn right into a brick road, and

go on for 6 more kilometers.

Tham Thip Prida(∂È”∑‘æ¬åª√’¥“)This area is a rocky mountain with a stream flowing past thefront. This mountain has about 40 beautiful caves, some ofwhich contain pools. These caves are in Mu 2, Tambon KhaoKhai. Tourists can easily get there through Chumphon- Sawiroute up to Khao Beep intersection, Thung Tako District. Then,go along Khao Beep- Khao Thalu Route for about 16 kilome-ters, turn left into a brick road and travel for 4 kilometers moreuntil you arrive at Huai Kaew intersection. Then, turn left into avillage road and travel for 6 kilometers more, you will be atTham Thip Prida. The total distance from the city center is 70kilometers.

Chumphon Horticultural Research Center(»Ÿπ¬å«‘®—¬æ◊™ «π™ÿ¡æ√)Located in Highway No.41 in Amphoe Sawi, is also a Centerfor testing the coconut variety, MAWA which is a hybridbetween the parent materials from Africa and Malaysia. TheCenter has a total area of 1,700 rais used for offices, resident,and experimental fields. There are also plots for intercropexperiments such as Robusta, coffee, and cocoa, intercroppedto coconut, aromatic coconut, vanilla, local vegetables, fragranttrees and medicinal plants. Amphoe Pathio (Õ”‡¿Õª–∑‘«)Ko Khai(‡°“–‰¢à)A small, mountainous island with the distance of 4 kms. fromHat Bo Mao, Ko Khai is surrounded with many short, attractivebeaches. The island’s beauty, however, lies below the surface ofthe crystal clear water. It is encircled by colorful coral reefsteeming with fish and other marine life. It is counted as one ofthe best fishing place in the district.

Ao Yai Ai(Õà“«¬“¬‰Õã)A 25 metres above sea-level viewpoint located just near the baywelcomes visitors with a panoramic view of the coast. TheSheltered water of the bay front hosts a great variety of coralwhich stretches for a distance of about 7 kms. It attractstourists for skin diving at all times.

Hat Thung Wua Laen(À“¥∑ÿàß«—«·≈àπ)Located in Pathio District in Tambon Sa Pli, some 16 kilometersfrom the town’s center along Chumphon-Hat Thung Wua LaenRoad, Thung Wua Laen is perhaps Chumphon’s most popularbeach. Both native swimmers and experts will enjoy this beachas its fine white sands slope gently into the sea. The southernend of the beach adjoins the foot of the Mountain. One ofChumphon’s premium dive sites. Sea fans, marine flowerssponges and a tremendous variety of reef fish make the scenerybelow the surface of the water every bit as spectacular as thebeach itself.

Ko Chorakhe(‡°“–®√–‡¢â)Although “Chorakhe” means “crocodile” in Thai, visitors tothis charming, respite some 11 kilometers offshore from AoThung Wua Laen, need not worry as the island gets its name-sake from its shape, not its inhabitants. It takes about 30minutes to reach the island by boat, but visitors will berewarded for their efforts with peace and quiet, two smallbeaches to choose from, and excellent snorkeling conditions.Offshore fishing is also reported to be good.

Ko Ngam Yai and Ko Ngam Noi(‡°“–ßà“¡„À≠à·≈–‡°“–ßà“¡πâÕ¬)This pair of adjacent islands is located 17 kilometers off the

southern part of Thung Wua Laen Bay. It is known amonglocals for the swallows’ nests which are harvested there forexport. Visitors, on the other hand are drawn to the islandsbecause of their fascinating rock formations, underwater caves,and spectacular coral reefs excellent for scuba diving.

Amphoe Phato (Õ”‡¿Õæ–‚µä–)Namtok Heo Lom(πÈ”µ°‡À«‚À≈¡)Located at Ban Bok Fai, Mu 3, Tambon Pak Song, about 16kilometers from the District Office of Phato along the LangSuan-Ratchakrud Highway (Highway No.4006) : These scenicfalls are a perfect fresh water adjunct to Chumphon’s beachesand islands. From the bottom of the falls, two-hour rafting toursdown the scenic Bok Rai River can be arranged betweenNovember and April. Khao Thung-Klong Pi Waterfall(‡¢“∑ÿàß-πÈ”µ°§≈Õߪî)Khao Thung is cover 3 provinces of Chumphon-Ranong-SuratThani, this large mountain is the main waterway of Lang Suanriver.
