N.B.E. National Bank of Egypt said it will add 500 new ATM units(automatic teller machines) before the end of 2011. This was reported in the media indicating that the development will increase the total ATM units serving its customers to 1,700. The bank is counting much on deploying those units to boost its retail and individual banking services, and also its personal loans to employees. The bank is now preparing a distribution plan for those new units.

Loans & GrantsA banking consortium led by the N.B.E. - National Bank of Egypt will soon endorse a L.E. 1.6 billion soft loan to back Suez thermal power station. The consortium groups Banque Misr, AAIB, CIB, NBD, the Industrial and Workers Bank and Al Ahli United Bank. Beneficiary of the loan is EDEPC - East Delta Electricity Production Co. The loan is for repayment over 14 years. Worth indicating that the same consortium has earlier arranged L.E. 4.3 billion loan to partly finance the emergency energy generation plan to build power stations in Damietta and Ismailiya.

EGPC - Egyptian General Petroleum Crop. has initiated negotiations with local and international banks to establish a L.E. 2 billion credit line to support winners of the new auctions to issue 15 exploration and exploitation licenses, now scheduled for 3/1/2012. This was reported in the media indicating that the said licenses would cover locations in the Suez Gulf, the Eastern Desert, Sinai and the Western Desert. While regretting the postponement of the auctions dates, repeatedly, to March 3, 2012, yet EGPC's above initiative is deemed by all means professional.

Projects Awards After being reconfirmed in his deserved post, Egypt's Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Eng. Hassan Younis, will soon sign the first two contracts worth L.E. 630 million pertaining to Assuit 32 MW hydro electric power station. The contracts pertain to the supply and erection of the turbines, generators and other electromechanical equipment. Contracts are part of a L.E. 3 billion scheme including both the hydroelectric power station and the barrage going under partial funding from KfW - German Bank for Reconstruction. N.B. Observers at home and abroad could not overview the sincerity, seriousness and capability of the Ministry of Electricity and Energy while progressing on multibillion energy projects in spite of most tough challenges and difficulties faced over the past 11 months, still maintaining strict adherence to full transparency codes.

Cairo Airport Co. has awarded L.E. 2.2 billion contract to LEMAC of Turkey for the revamping of Cairo Airport Terminal No. 2 for completion in three years. The project will raise the terminal annual capacity from 3.5 million passengers to 7.5 million passengers. The job is backed by $ 280 million loan from the World Bank and L.E. 850 million from NBE - National Bank of Egypt.

Delta Cement Co. has announced formally the signing of a contract with RIGDIF - Royal International Group for Development, Investment and Finance regarding the finance and construction of its cement factory in Beni Suef. The project will have an annual design capacity of 1.5 million tons, and will involve L.E. 1.8 billion investments. Chairman of Delta Cement Co. is Mr. Helmi Ahmed Ibrahim Fesikh and Chairman of RIGDIF is H.R.H. Prince Bandar Bin Khaled Bin Abul Aziz Al So'oud.

Egypt's Electricity Sector will soon sign two contracts for the steam turbines and the waste heat recovery boilers pertaining to the 1,500 MW combined cycle power station in North Giza. This was announced by Eng. Ali Hassan, Chairman of CEPC - Cairo Electricity Production Co., indicating that the steam turbines contract will be awarded to a group of Italian companies. The Executive noted that civil works are progressing at the project's site. On his side, Eng. Hamdy Azzab, Chairman of EDEPC - East Delta Electricity Production Co., assured that all subordinated power stations in Oyoun Moussa, Sharm El Sheikh, El Arish and North Port Said were not affected by Sharm El Sheikh earthquake witnessed recently.

Egypt's energy sector has awarded two contracts valued at L.E. 410 million pertaining to two steam turbines of 250 MW capacity each required for the Benha 750 MW combined cycle power station also for its relevant insurance coverage during construction phase. This was announced by Minister Dr. Eng. Hassan Younis indicating that the project is part of the Ministry's 2012 - 2017 plan. The total estimated project's costs are put at L.E. 4.4 billion with its foreign currency component backed by soft loans from AFESD, KFESD, Jeddah based IDB, Abu Dhabi Fund, SIDF and Opec Fund.

The contract provides for the supply, supervision and erection of a wide variety of solutions including HVAC control, medium voltage ring main unit and switchgear, low voltage system, busway, access control and CCTV system, fire alarm, UPS, KNX control system and a power management system. No mention was given to financial details.

Holding Co. for Airports and Air Navigation announced it has awarded an L.E. 2.3 billion contract to Limac of Turkey to implement Cairo Airport's second terminal building for completion in three years time. The project will increase the terminal's annual capacity to handle 7.5 million passengers. Other four international and regional companies were competing for the deal. The project will raise total annual capacity of all three terminals at Cairo Airport to 30 million passengers by the year 2022.

Misr Hotels Co., reporting to Hotac has awarded a L.E. 494.1 million contract to the UAE based ACC - Arab Construction Co. for the architectural, civil and electromechanical works pertaining to Ritz Carlton Hotel Project (Ex Nile Hilton). This was reported in the media indicating that the issue was endorsed by Misr Hotels' board of directors and that another limited tender will be issued for kitchens, elevators and laundries. Meanwhile, reports revealed that financial statements of Misr Hotels Co., reporting to HOTAC - Holding Co. for Tourism and Cinema, for the first quarter of 2011/ 2012 showed L.E. 4 million net losses which compares with L.E. L.E. 0.84 million net losses incurred for the comparison quarter of FY 2010/ 2011. Reports have further revealed that the company has posted for FY 2010/ 2011 about L.E. 12.4 million net profits which compares with L.E. 7.5 million net profits posted for FY 2009/ 2010.

This was reported in the media indicating that the first was signed with a South Korean Consortium grouping Hyundai Co. and Daewoo Co. regarding a package for North Giza 1,500 MW power station while another contract was signed with Ansaldo of Italy regarding another package pertaining to Benha 750 MW power station. Both projects are part of the Energy Sector 2012 - 2017 plan. A third contract was signed with PGESCO regarding engineering consultancy services. Regretfully no breakdown of the figure was given.

Projects in Pre-Tendering PhaseAn L.E. 12 billion, 1,950 MW, steam fired power station project was launched by Egypt's Energy Sector in South Helwan backed by part finance from six international financing institutions. They include the World Bank, to raise $ 455 million, ADB - African Development Bank, to raise $ 520 million, Jeddah Based Islamic Development Bank, to raise $ 200 million, the AMF - Arab Monetary Fund to raise KD 55 million and the KFESD, to raise $ 30 million. Project, which occupy 90 feddans land and host 3 x 650 MW units, is scheduled for completion by 2015. The project is a major component of the Energy Sector's 2012/ 207 plan.

More details were released on the earlier announced huge natural gas find in the Western Desert hit by Khalda Co. involving additional reserves put at 2.3 trillion cubic feet of gas and 67 million barrels of condensates. The find, identified as the Century's find, is located at Kasr gas field. This was announced by Eng. Abdalla Ghorab, Minister of Petroleum and Minerals, indicating that the plan to develop the find prepared by Khalda Co. provides, in its first phase, to drill up to 20 wells. Eng. Ghorab noted that several international groups have expressed interest to invest in gas exploration and exploitation at the field. Worth indicating that the find will enable three gas treatment factories in the Western Desert (Salam, Tarek and Al Abyad) to operate at maximum capacity and the same is said for the gases complex in El Amriya.

Same applied to brand new instruments to now range L.E. 1,000 to L.E. 1,500 down from L.E. 1,500 to L.E. 2,500 a year ago. Laptop prices are also said to decline by 30 %.

A statement of Intel's CEO quoted in the international and local media indicated that its revenues during the quarter reached $ 14.3 billion of which net profits were put at $ 3.7 billion. More than 6,000 ATM units are now serving Egypt's banking sector. Claims were raised that 300 ATM units were destroyed since January 2011. This was revealed in a report of NCR Africa indicating that the figure translates into a ratio of 70 ATM units for each million citizens and that compares with 1,400 ATM units for each million citizen in the US.

N.B.E. National Bank of Egypt said it will add 500 new ATM units(automatic teller machines) before the end of 2011. This was reported in the media indicating that the development will increase the total ATM units serving its customers to 1,700. The bank is counting much on deploying those units to boost its retail and individual banking services, and also its personal loans to employees. The bank is now preparing a distribution plan for those new units.

Business News Data transmission and Internet access via mobile are projected to make up almost 50% of future gross operating revenues at communication companies by the year 2015. This was announced by Mr. Ashraf Helal, Director General for Customers Service at Vodafone Egypt in an almost half page full interview published in the media. He revealed that operating cost of his sector reaches annually L.E. 250 million, 75 to 80% of which allocated to salaries and outsourcing services. Meanwhile, the Executive revealed two important developments achieved so far by Vodafone including the completion of 95% of the database of mobile telephone holders, also being technically and technologically ready to launch 4th Generation services in the local market yet that depends on endorsement by the government.

During the third quarter of 2011, China has out bid the US as the largest market for smart mobile telephones world wide. The development took place with total sales of those smart devices in China during the quarter reaching 9.3 million which compares with 3.23 million only in the US. This was revealed in a report prepared by Strategy Analytics Inc. for Market Research of the US. The report further disclosed that the population of those smart devices in China by the end of the quarter increased by 58% against 7% decline on the US market. The report also noted that while Nokia - the Finnish giant, is leading the Chinese market for smart telephones with 28% market share, HTC of Taiwan is leading the US market with 24% market share.

Libyan Authorities announced that the reconstruction of the country's communications sector would require investments of billions of dollars over the next few years. This was reported in the media quoting Mr. Fawzi Khalifa Al Barrani, head of the Libyan Telecommunications Authority, assuring that his country will respect its commitments in past contracts, yet it intends to re evaluate previous contracts signed with local, European and international companies to build mobile and other telephone networks, with nil execution so far on most of them. This indicates that Libya would respect those contracts as much as applicable and that it may replace some of them to get better conditions, bearing in mind that those contracts are wort several billions of dollars. While assuring full transparency in that process, the Executive assured that the transitional government will only execute urgent and crucial repair and maintenance works, leaving the release of new plans to comprehensively revamp the sector to the new government to be formed.

Losses of Internet service providers from unauthorized service connections are estimated annually at L.E. 1.25 billion. This was reported in the media quoting Eng. Tamer Gadallah, Managing Director of TeData, attributing the development to the lack of any means to control the issue. The executive noted that his company now controls 63% of the Internet access market in the country. The company, celebrated recently its 10th anniversary, targets to achieve L.E. 1 billion revenues for the year 2011 which compares with L.E. 15 million in 2001. The company employs now almost 3,000 persons. Latest released statistics indicated that Internet users in Egypt reached 27 million of which 1.7 million are subscribers to the broad band service.

Data transmission and Internet access via mobile are projected to make up almost 50% of future gross operating revenues at communication companies by the year 2015. This was announced by Mr. Ashraf Helal, Director General for Customers Service at Vodafone Egypt in an almost half page full interview published in the media. He revealed that operating cost of his sector reaches annually L.E. 250 million, 75 to 80% of which allocated to salaries and outsourcing services. Meanwhile, the Executive revealed two important developments achieved so far by Vodafone including the completion of 95% of the database of mobile telephone holders, also being technically and technologically ready to launch 4th Generation services in the local market yet that depends on endorsement by the government.

During the third quarter of 2011, China has out bid the US as the largest market for smart mobile telephones world wide. The development took place with total sales of those smart devices in China during the quarter reaching 9.3 million which compares with 3.23 million only in the US. This was revealed in a report prepared by Strategy Analytics Inc. for Market Research of the US. The report further disclosed that the population of those smart devices in China by the end of the quarter increased by 58% against 7% decline on the US market. The report also noted that while Nokia - the Finnish giant, is leading the Chinese market for smart telephones with 28% market share, HTC of Taiwan is leading the US market with 24% market share.

Etisalat Misr, affiliated to Etisalat of the UAE, is investing in green energy to feed its network of communication transmitting stations. The company claims being a pioneer in that field revealing that so far it has built 40 such stations and planning to build further 150 stations during the first half of 2012. The development would obviously contribute to eliminating CO2 emissions hence improving environment. Etisalat have succeeded also to use aluminum stands for both the windmills and solar cells surfaces instead of copper stands being by all means of higher cost apart from eliminating theft chances of those expensive copper stands.

HUAWEI of China has predicted its sales of mobile telephone sets in Egypt in 2012 to reach 8 million claiming that it now controls almost 95% of the domestic USB market. This was announced by Mr. Alaa Ahmed, HUAWEI Marketing Director Middle East and North Africa, revealing that sales in the Region in 2011 grew by more than 150%. The Executive further revealed that HUAWEI will soon sign an agreement with a third agent in Egypt to promote and distribute its products in the country.

Business News Libyan Authorities announced that the reconstruction of the country's communications sector would require investments of billions of dollars over the next few years. This was reported in the media quoting Mr. Fawzi Khalifa Al Barrani, head of the Libyan Telecommunications Authority, assuring that his country will respect its commitments in past contracts, yet it intends to re evaluate previous contracts signed with local, European and international companies to build mobile and other telephone networks, with nil execution so far on most of them. This indicates that Libya would respect those contracts as much as applicable and that it may replace some of them to get better conditions, bearing in mind that those contracts are wort several billions of dollars. While assuring full transparency in that process, the Executive assured that the transitional government will only execute urgent and crucial repair and maintenance works, leaving the release of new plans to comprehensively revamp the sector to the new government to be formed.

Losses of Internet service providers from unauthorized service connections are estimated annually at L.E. 1.25 billion. This was reported in the media quoting Eng. Tamer Gadallah, Managing Director of TeData, attributing the development to the lack of any means to control the issue. The executive noted that his company now controls 63% of the Internet access market in the country. The company, celebrated recently its 10th anniversary, targets to achieve L.E. 1 billion revenues for the year 2011 which compares with L.E. 15 million in 2001. The company employs now almost 3,000 persons. Latest released statistics indicated that Internet users in Egypt reached 27 million of which 1.7 million are subscribers to the broad band service.

This was concluded by a research paper prepared by GSMA for Market Research revealing that annual increase in the number of users since 2005 averaged 20% with the pre paid cards system serving almost 96% of users. The study noted that huge opportunities exist for promoting the service since one of each 4 persons in the continent has not yet subscribed to it.

Figure was revealed in a recent report of Comescure (for market research) indicating that during September 2011 about 55 million persons accessed different Internet sites via their mobile telephones and the figure represents one quarter of total users in those five countries. Report further noted that during the same month, 50 % of those users accessed Internet daily making 67 % growth compared to access ratios recorded during the same month of 2010.

Telephone cables thefts during 2011 were estimated at L.E. 100 million which compares with L.E. 25 million worth of relevant thefts during 2010. This was announced by Eng. El Sayyed Dessouki, CEO first deputy of Telecom Egypt, indicating that the practice resulted in service shutdowns at various cities and locations. The practice is seen as part of the overall looseness of security witnessed all over the country, yet strong hopes and acts exist that will soon put an end for such looseness. Thefts are harming both stationary telephone lines and Internet access. A salvage thought was to deepen the path of those cables down in the earth.

Meanwhile, media reports revealed that France Telecom is exiting Switzerland as part of a plan to reorient its business towards faster growing markets in the Middle East and Africa. Reports indicated that the French company has agreed this month to acquire Congo-China Telecom, the fourth largest mobile telephone operator in Congo.

Telecom Egypt SAE has announced it has posted for the first 9 months of 2011 about L.E. 2.3 billion net profits giving no comparison values. This was reported in the media indicating gross revenues during the period reached L.E. 7.3 billion marking a slight decline below their level during the same period of 2010 put then at L.E. 7.7 billion. Subscribers to stationary telephone lines by the end of the third quarter of 2011 reached 8.6 million. Meanwhile, the company revealed that its revenues from broadband Internet services during the period reached L.E. 760 million claiming it controls about 63% market share in that segment. It has further revealed that its investments during the period reached L.E. 497 million. More details will be revealed upon publishing the full text of the financial statements.
