Music lessons & lesson times

Children are expected to commit to an instrument for a full year as it is only after a year that one can determine if sufficient progress has been made. A child is expected to have his/her own instrument at home.

There are 14 guaranteed music lessons per week. Music lessons take place from 13:00-15:00 from Monday- Friday, with later lessons available to external students on Tuesdays/Wednesday between 15:30-16:30 by special request. Preparatory School learners will only be permitted to have music lessons from 14:30, outside Academic time.

Music lesson preparation

Children will receive age appropriate written and practical homework after each lesson. Even just coloring in a music instrument for our little ones, lays a good foundation for the discipline it takes to play an instrument. Practicing at home, as well as support from parents, are essential to ensure progress. Parents are encouraged to check their music book regularly. Failure to do homework would result in lesson time being used to complete concept before moving ahead.

Students need to bring the following to each lesson; 1. Message book – A5/A6 book for feedback & homework 2. A4 Flip File (Vocal/Recorder students) 3. Piano book- John Thompson’s easiest piano course Part 1 (Students will progress through course, and parents kept up to date on when new Piano book is to be purchased.)

DISCOUNTED AFTERCARE OPTION: We offer an optional discounted aftercare option to Capriccio! learners - this entails 2 - 3 hours of afternoon care at the school at a reduced daily fee of R100, for each of the 8 afternoons per term that the learner will be participating in an extramural program at our school. The cost per school quarter amounts to R800, billed pro rata monthly in advance with extramural fees.

Children not making use of above option to be dropped off (ready in the relevant dress code) - and collected punctually, as no other supervision before or after classes will be available.

PARENT OPEN CLASS: The last lesson of our first semester (Term 2) will be open for parents who wish to sit in and watch with a concert to show case our skills at the end of the year. Kindly note that we are unable to accommodate parents attending any of the other lessons, as this is very distracting for the children. For security reasons, we do not offer a waiting area for anyone arriving early to collect a child after an extramural lesson. Thank you for your understanding in this regard.

CLASS PLACEMENT & PROGRESSION Students will be placed in different level classes at discretion of teacher. Students may be moved mid-year with parent approval. Class fees differ slightly, so please be aware of these changes as your child progresses.

EXTRAMURAL TERM DATES & MISSED LESSONS Classes run for 8 weeks per quarter, starting week 2 of each term. Any lessons missed due to public holidays will be caught up on a different day and be communicated ahead of time. If a child misses a lesson due to illness or personal reason with communication from the parent, the teacher will endeavor to schedule a catch-up lesson. Any catch-up lessons are dependent on Teacher availability.

Aim The program as it is taught at Capriccio! is a “pre-gymnastics" class, teaching young gymnasts physical and cognitive fitness skills that can prepare them for Gymnastics levels at a competing gymnastics club in future, if they so choose. From age 7, children have the choice to start competing on a national level at a competing gymnastic club, but before that, gymnastics lessons focus on fitness, fun, flexibility, muscle development, locomotion and rotation skills, jumping and landing skills. Instruction focused on above elements prepares their bodies and gives them the required technique, strength and flexibility, should they continue on to Competition levels, whilst providing a fun and low pressure environment for children to get fit.

Curriculum The curriculum consists of three levels. Throughout the year we explore different skills on all equipment including Beam, Horizontal bars, Floor, & Trampoline.

1. Level 1: 30 min sessions once a week. Focused on developing basic gross motor skills; Balance, spring and landing, rotation, locomotion.

2. Level 2: 30min sessions once a week. Increasing difficulty in skills and more time working on equipment. Start working on technique, flexibility & strength.

3. Level 3: 45min sessions once a week.. Introduction of routines on all equipment. Focused on technique, strength, flexibility & stamina.

All levels are delivered in a learn-through-play environment. The aim is not to create perfect gymnasts by age six, but rather to awaken a passion for this beautiful sport all while having fun and staying fit and healthy.

Lesson Consists of the following: 1. Warm up (Gymnastic shape retention as foundation for other skills, and cardio) 2. Floor skills (Rotation & locomotion skills eg. Cartwheels, handstands, round offs) 3. Circuits (Skills on trampoline, Beam, Bars and floor in continuous circuit) 4. Cool down (Stretch and strengthening exercises) This class is not competitive or strenuous, but rather a fun way to learn and progress. Instruction: Teacher Tashai (Qualified Community Coach)

Sport Stars Unite! is a physical education program for children that provides a positive, fun and uplifting sport experience for participants. Studies have shown that physical exercise primes the brain for peak performance.

The focus of our sport activities is on promoting fitness and participation in ball sensing skills, to encourage sport readiness in children.

This is a fun-filled, games-orientated activity once a week in age-relevant groups where our sport teacher guides participants in engaging in physical activities and exercises designed to develop an affinity for sport, while at the same time enhancing their social skills and keeping them active and happy.
