MATILDA SUMMER SCHOOL 2018Thank you for your interest in Cambridge Theatre Company’s Matilda
Summer School.
Even if you have been in our shows before, we politely request that you read this
document very carefully.
In the spring of 2017 we auditioned nearly 200 young people for Les Misérables,
School Edition, but we could not include everyone in the show. This year we are
keen to develop the talented younger generation and we will be launching our first
Summer School and focusing on highlights from the smash hit musical, Matilda.
We have been extremely lucky to secure a special license for us to perform a
revised version of the show. We are looking to secure 3 teams of young people
and each team will perform 2 shows each but these performances will be ticketed
for friends and families only.
We are now looking for a cast of enthusiastic, talented and committed young
people to take part in this special edition show.
Participants must be at least 8 and no older than 14 years of age on Monday 23
July 2018. Proof of ID may be requested. Unfortunately, we are unable to make any
exceptions to these age restrictions.

OFFICIAL OVERVIEWMatilda is the multi award-winning show,
inspired by the beloved book by the
incomparable Roald Dahl.
Matilda is the story of an extraordinary
little girl with extraordinary powers. The
daughter of abusive parents, Matilda finds
refuge in library books, which she reads
quickly, and in creating her own stories.
Things are no better at school, where
Matilda must also face a tyrannical and cruel
headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, who believes
in Crunchem Hall’s motto: “Bambinatum
est Magitum,” or “Children are Maggots.”
She finds companionship in her teacher,
Miss Honey, who though well-intentioned,
is shy and fragile. Brave little Matilda knows
she has to stand up against the adults in
her world and, in doing so, discovers her
own remarkable powers. Matilda’s bravery
teaches Miss Honey and her classmates
an important lesson -- that even though
life can be hard, “nobody but me is gonna
change my story” so “sometimes you have
to be a little bit naughty.”

SUMMER SCHOOL The Summer School Project aims to bring 3
teams of young people working together to
create our version of the show with performances
at the end of the second week. The friendships,
experiences and memories that are formed
during projects like these are wonderfully unique
and last a lifetime. The project is the product of a
lot of hard work and time, and it is only through
the commitment of everyone involved that the
final result is so spectacular.

DIRECTOR’S VISION Emily Starr, Director
What struck me when I first watched Matilda in the
West End was the sheer energy of the children. They
completely outshone the adults. During our workshops and
performances we will be exploring energy and exploring
games and exercises to make the most of energy. Matilda
is such a wonderful story, which explores imagination and
creativity something which young people have, in abundance.
We will be playing and unleashing creativity throughout the
two weeks working through song, dance and acting to create
our own exciting version of Matilda. Both adult and youth
characters will be played by 8-14 year olds so it’s a great
opportunity for the youngsters of Cambridge to show their
talents. The set will be relatively simple to allow the audience
to also use their imaginations but we will have a lot of fun,
learn lots of new skills and put on a memorable production
for Cambridge.

comfortable, loose clothing. Please do

HOW THE AUDITION DAY WORKS Once everyone is signed in we will introduce the members of the Production Team and
explain how the audition workshop will be run.
Participants do not need to prepare anything for the audition workshop. Participants will be
taught a verse and chorus of a Matilda song, and they will be taught a short dance piece on
the day. It’s important to highlight that we don’t just expect the ‘best’ singers, dancers and
actors; we like to recognise potential and work with individuals throughout the process.
We cannot predict a finishing time, but our aim is to have seen everyone by the end of each
session. After that we will ask selected individuals to come back for recalls on the day of
their audition from 2.30-5pm, so please ensure you will be available for this.
If you are asked to stay on you can wait in the waiting room until you have been seen or
leave the site but it’s your responsibility to be back on time, so please bring plenty to eat
and drink.
We would recommend bringing a mobile phone so that you can contact your parents for
lifts at the end of the audition.
Expect there to be a lot of waiting around, as we have many young people to see. Bring
quiet things to do to keep you occupied; CTC will not take any responsibility for personal
belongings that may get lost.
Parents/guardians wishing to stay and wait for their children may wait in the waiting room.
Once everyone is signed into the building and the auditions are underway the main doors
will be locked. This is to enable us to keep the building secure whilst the auditions are going
on. Parents/guardians will not be allowed to watch the audition workshop.
You must request your audition by email to [email protected] with your
preferred workshop date/time, age and MATILDA in the subject line of the email.
Please bring your completed audition contact form with attached passport style photo
with you on the day.

The fee does not include meals or transportation, which remain the
responsibility of the parent/guardian.
All fees must be paid by Sunday 24 June 2018.
If you decided to withdraw from the project then the participant’s

result in the participant being excluded from the project.

who genuinely cannot afford the fees. Please contact Louis Ling,
[email protected] for an application form. You may
be asked to supply proof of earnings.

asked to provide some elements of school uniform that hopefully
can be found easily at home or from a charity shop etc. We will
also create a props list and ask participants to ask family and
friends to look in attics and garages for items that we can use in the
production.
NOTE TO PARENTS We rely on good communication with parents to ensure that the
project runs smoothly, therefore please ensure that all the forms are
filled out correctly. We will endeavour to email any information to
you as well as your child to keep you informed of rehearsal times
and schedules. Please don’t hesitate to contact us should you need
to discuss further any information regarding your child and their
involvement in Matilda.

correspondence regarding casting will not be entered into.
