The integration platform for multi-objective optimization, multi-disciplinary automation, and analytical decision making. information sheet Coupling modeFRONTIER with Optimate: Easy Set-up of DOE and Optimization Studies Integration with Coupling modeFRONTIER with Optimate could not be simpler: once the user has defined the input and output parameters of the optimization in STAR-CCM+ and Optimate, the Optimate node in modeFRONTIER need only be opened, and the STAR- CCM+ file identified. This file will be introspected to present the user with a list of all the input and output parameters, from which those of interest can be chosen. At this point mode- FRONTIER will automatically create a workflow with all the required connections, leaving the user just to define the upper and lower bounds of the parameters, and to select the best algorithm for the study. This easy-to-use integration between modeFRONTIER and Optimate works just as well for single and multi-objective opti- mization studies, and can be used for cases where the geometry comes from the STAR-CCM+ 3D-CAD Modeler, or from external CAD programs such as CATIA, NX or CREO. For many years STAR-CD and STAR-CCM+ users have been turning to mode- FRONTIER to help them with Design of Experiments (DOE) and optimization studies for a variety of applications from many fields, including aerospace, auto- motive, architecture, and chemical. The process of allowing modeFRONTIER to drive STAR-CCM+ in such parametric studies is now much easier, due to the advent of CD-adapco’s Optimate add-on module, and ESTECO’s direct integration between modeFRONTIER and that tool. About ESTECO ESTECO is a pioneer in numerical optimization solutions, specialized in research and development of engineering software for all stages of the simulation-driven design process. Over 250 international organizations have entrusted the modeFRONTIER multidisciplinary and multiobjective optimization platform to accelerate product innovation across a wide spectrum of industrial sectors. The company headquarters are located in Trieste, Italy, with offices in North America and India. www.esteco.com

Coupling modeFRONTIER with Optimate:Easy Set-up of DOE and Optimization Studies

Integration with

Coupling modeFRONTIER with Optimate could not be simpler: once the user has defined the input and output parameters of the optimization in STAR-CCM+ and Optimate, the Optimate node in modeFRONTIER need only be opened, and the STAR-CCM+ file identified. This file will be introspected to present the user with a list of all the input and output parameters, from which those of interest can be chosen. At this point mode-FRONTIER will automatically create a workflow with all the required connections, leaving the user just to define the upper and lower bounds of the parameters, and to select the best algorithm for the study.

This easy-to-use integration between modeFRONTIER and Optimate works just as well for single and multi-objective opti-mization studies, and can be used for cases where the geometry comes from the STAR-CCM+ 3D-CAD Modeler, or from external CAD programs such as CATIA, NX or CREO.

For many years STAR-CD and STAR-CCM+ users have been turning to mode-FRONTIER to help them with Design of Experiments (DOE) and optimization studies for a variety of applications from many fields, including aerospace, auto-motive, architecture, and chemical.

The process of allowing modeFRONTIER to drive STAR-CCM+ in such parametric studies is now much easier, due to the advent of CD-adapco’s Optimate add-on module, and ESTECO’s direct integration between modeFRONTIER and that tool.

Example: Multi-objective Optimization of a PipeThe example shown here is a mixing pipe; half the inlet is water and the other half ethanol. There are 4 geometric variables: the size and angular position of the first baffle, and the size and axial position of the second. The objectives of the study are to maximize the mixing of the 2 fluids, while minimizing the pressure loss in the tube.

Step 1: Set up Parameterizationin STAR-CCM+ and Optimate 1

Step 2: Open modeFRONTIER and insert Optimate Node in the workflow2

Step 3: Open Optimate Node and perform introspection for Input and Output Parameters 3

Step 4: On clicking “OK”, modeFRONTIER automatically builds the workflow4

Step 5: User defines input variable limits and objectives for optimization5

Step 6: Post-process results and choose final design 6
