It was an event that offered

much food for thought. The eventwas the 3rd convocation of theGraduation ceremony of the PGDiploma Courses in Counsellingoffered by Manasa EducationalFoundation for Mental Health,Shivamogga, and BharatiyaVidya Bhavan’s H. B. Collegeof Communication andManagement, Bengaluru. It washeld on December 28, 2019.

There was a huge chasmbetween the number of peoplewho were trained in offeringcounselling help and thosesuffering from mental healthproblems, said Dr. Preethi V.Shanbhag, Academic Director,Manasa Trust, who spoke at theGraduation ceremony.

Recalling her father,Dr.K.A. Ashok Pai, whom shecalled a crusader in the cause of

mental health, said that he hadbeen committed to it at a timewhen it was considered to be astigma, and when people refusedto talk about it. The ManasaTrust was founded to dispelsuch an attitude to mental health. The objective of the trust waspromoting positive mental healtheducation and driving away thestigma associated with mental illhealth.

Today, there is an everincreasing need for counsellors inhospitals, schools, NGOs, andfamily counselling centres. As perWHO estimates, one in fourpersons is likely to be affected bya mental illness at least once intheir lifetime.

Guest of Honour, Dr. AliKhwaja, Chairman of BanjaraAcademy, Bangalore, said mentalhealth problems like loneliness

could reach epidemicproportions in today’s world. He lauded the fact that the U.K.government had thought it fit tohave a Minister for Lonelinesslast year. While we may say thatsuch problems do not exist inIndia, it is quite possible forpeople to live together and yetlive in loneliness, he said, especially in a world where onewas pre occupied with howmanyfriends they had on Facebookor how many likes they got. “Weneed a thousand more Manasas,”he believed, based on his yearsof counselling experience.

Shri. K. A. Dayananda,Director, Department ofWomen and Child Development, encouraged the graduatingstudents saying that their work ascounsellors was indeed veryimportant as they were now

responsible for people’s mentalhealth. He said many peoplesuffered from stress in the currenttimes.

Prof. Sreedhar Murthy,Retired professor of Psychologyfrom NMKRV College forWomen, delivered a speciallecture on “Indian marriage minefields – Changing Paradigms,”which was as telling as it washumorous.Speaking on how manymarriages crumbled today andended in divorce, he also advisedthe students to read up onphilosophy, literature, andanthropology for a holisticperspective and to avoid beingjudgmental while counselling.

Speaking on the occasion,Director of Bharatiya VidyaBhavan, Shri. H.N.Sureshcongratulated the graduatingstudents.

Kerala. Usually staged duringtemple festivals and culturalprogrammes, these performancesuse elaborate expressions andstories recited in verses to bringimportant mythological tales andstories to life. An elaborateintroduction on Thullal as an artform of Kerala and also on thestory of Kalyana Sougandhikam’was also given.

On August 6, Kurathiattamwas presented by Shri.Thrissur Nadanavedi & party.Kurathiattam is a performancebased on narration of Kuravanand Kuravathi in the ShivaPurana. It is performed indifferent ways in South andNorth Kerala. Only threeartistes perform it in the southwhile eight artistes perform it

in the north. Very few musicalinstruments are used. The maincharacters are Kurava andKurathi.

Kurathiattam, an art formbelieved to be more than 200years old, is in dire straitson account of lack of stages, performers and audiences.Like many folk art forms,Kurathiattam is also fading intooblivion. There are hardly twoor three groups earnestlyinvolved in performing this artform. Kuravan and Kurathiwho come to participate in theThrissur pooram get separated. They wander around in searchof each other. The story endswith both meeting, after a seriesof quarrels and then accostingeach other.

On August 28,ThullalThrayam was directed by Shri.Thamarakudi KarunakaranMaster & party. Thullal Thrayam(Parayan Thullal, SeethankanThullal, Ottan Thullal) are artforms of Kerala.Sri. KunjanNambiar, a renowned Malayalampoet in the 18th century, createdthe different art forms of ‘Thullal’.This work is noted for its uniquestyle of social criticism in theguise of humour.

The story goes thus: oncethe poet fell asleep while playingthe Mizhavu for Chakyar Koothuperformance thus inviting ridiculefrom the Chakyar. It is said thatNambiar developed Ottanthullalin response to that. Parayandance includes Pacha KuthalKachakettal etc., wearing

glittering costumes. The face isadorned with colours called“minukku vesham’ for seethankandance. Ornaments made of “kururthola” is used for seethankandance while a triangle shapedcrown and ornaments made ofrudraksha beads are used forparayan dance. The dancerapplies ash on his body, wearssilk robe and one jingling anklet. The dancer has to sing andperform on the stage in all theseart forms. The lines are repeatedby the background singers.

On September 25, ChakyarKoothu was presented byShri. Kalamandalam Anoop andparty.Chakyar Koothu is an artform of Kerala in which storiesof Hindu mythology and epicsare orally rendered, primarilywith the support of acting andhand gestures. In the oldendays, it was confined to templepremises. Only the membersof the Chakyar communityperformed this art form andhence the name Chakyar Koothu. This was performed in templetheatres called Koothambalam. In Chakyar Koothu, the entire

story is presented by a singleperformer. The costumes arethose of a court jester. Facialmakeup is done with rice powder, turmeric powder and blackpowder. He wears an ornament inone ear and a betel leaf in theother.

An accompanying artisteplays the percussioninstrument,Mizhavu, in thebackground. The highlight ofChakyar Koothu is satire, socialcriticism and humour presentedthrough related stories orepisodes. In the olden days ofroyalty, the Chakyar had the rightto criticize even the king and hisacts while performing. Thepractice was that the audienceshould listen to the Chakyarand accept his criticism.

Any opposition to commentsmade by the Chakyar whileperforming would put an end tothe performance of the art formin those premises forever.

The story of Panchalee-svayamvaram is drawn from theMahabharata. The Pandavas livein Ekachakra disguised asBrahmins. Hearing the news ofPanchalee’s marriage byswayamvaram, they go to theplace along with Brahmins.Arjuna’s ability with the arrowearns him the admiration ofDrupada, who decides to givehim his daughter in marriage. Itwas not easy to win the hand ofDroupadhy since Drupada hadarranged a contest to prove theability in archery of the suitor.

An arena was constructed and inits center was fixed a high polewith a revolving ring on top. Thesuitor had to shoot five arrows inquick succession through thering. A mighty bow was kept inthe arena to facilitate this shooting. The successful candidate waseligible to marry Droupadhy.

The Pandavas in the guiseof Brahmins waited in patienceamong the assembly. Once theKshatriya kings failed, Arjunarose from the crowd and cameforward, took the bow andarrows and shot five arrows inquick succession into the revolvingring to the dismay of all presentthere. Panchalee had to accepthim as her husband even thoughthe identity of Arjuna was notrevealed at that time.
