From the Editor’s Desk

Rested and recharged, it’s once more unto the breach, dear friends as Dubai’s club and live music scene expands once again after the summer slump. And there are a lot of reasons to be very, very excited, 5 of which we highlight in our cover feature.

Elsewhere, we take an in-depth look at Berlin’s vibrant club scene (and all just a budget airline flight away), have the lowdown on the Pioneer DJ Championships and have the usual essential gig listings and fun and games courtesy of the Angry Monkey and the Pan-Arabia Enquirer. Enjoy the issue.

What we did

WITh DUBAI’S EvENTS on lock-down, we’ve got international for our reviews this issue. And we start in Toronto, Canada’s capital city and one blessed with a summer that’s nearly as hot as Dubai’s. While you might think Dubai can offer some fierce club competition, Justice and M83’s mini-festival was going up against a sell-out Deadmau5 gig (the man-mouse is a local legend, having grown up in the city), while Avicii was also playing in town the same night. And the result? Every gig was packed to the rafters, although those at the Justice and M83 concert might have wished for a roof on their open-air affair, as the heaven’s opened just before show-time, drenching 5,000 people. French rock/electronic outfit M83 threatened to steal the show, notably when the sax solo on ‘Midnight City’ had the crowd on the edge of combustion, but the night belonged to Justice. Even if a torrential downpour hadn’t occurred during ‘Waters of Nazareth’ as if on cue, the Parisian pair crafted one of the best sets we’ve seen/heard as they dropped bass-heavy electro bomb after bass-heavy electro bomb. The only fitting way to finish the night off was with an Erol Alkan after-party at a nearby club. In the end there was no competition: Toronto wins hands down.

Exit festival is different. There’s the fact it was created as a protest to the Serbian government at the turn of the century. There’s the fact it’s held in the Petrovaradin Fortress on Novi Sad, an imposing and quite stunning arena (put it this way, it’s not a sodden field in Wiltshire). There’s the fact that it’s only a 5 hour flight away from Dubai (and a cheap one as Air Arabia fly direct), while the cost of living - and partying - is considerably cheaper than most festivals (beers are a snip at Dhs10). There’s the fact that they collate a huge line up spanning indie, rock and electronic music (Guns’n’Roses, New Order, Duran Duran, Skream and Plan B were on this year’s bill) and you can dance until dawn for every day of the 4 day festival - a pretty cool fact made even cooler when you watch Luciano drop a devastating edit of Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ at sunrise in the dance arena. And then there’s the hugely exciting fact that the organisers are looking to the Middle East as a source of talent for future gigs - Juliana Down were scheduled to play at this year’s festival but had to pull out at the last moment. Playing and partying at Exit Festival next summer? That’s a different summer plan that everyone can get on board with.

GOOD NEWS FOR EDM fans, as the dxb festival returns for another year, with 3 big name electro and American-leaning dance music names. Dutch DJ afrojack returns to the emir-ate after impressing recently at Cream-fields, while Far east Movement and huge US DJ Kaskade are also added to the bill. It all takes place on October 5 at the event's new home at Festival City.

As first Freshly Laced and then Deep Crates, the weekly Thursday night shin-dig at Casa Latina has been dishing up funk and hip hop beats for over 2 years now. And Deep Crates is welcoming in the new season by hosting a tribe called Quest's Ali Shaheed Muham-mad (left on photo) on thursday Sep-tember 13. An American hip hop DJ, rapper and producer, he was part of the group alongside Q Tip and Phife Dawg, and will no doubt be dropping some of the group's classics on the night, hope-fully including 'Can I Kick It,' 'Scenario' and 'Check The Rhime.'

Rejoice: The Dark Knight Rises is every bit as good as you hoped.

Grey-beard ravers. Always good to see that clubbing and raving stays with you even into your 50s.

Post-Ramadan rumors. Clubs opening, clubs closing, festivals being planned - it's all going on, and we've got all the gossip. Woo hoo!

Just a shame we had to wait a full month behind the international release to see Batman, yet again cinema in Dubai fails to deliver.

That empty feeling in your life as you struggle to fill that post-Olympic hole: synchronized swimming at JBR anyone?

Disco damage. Ouch. The day after seems to get longer and longer, and harder and harder. Now where did we put that Burger King menu...

RuMOuRSSasha is pencilled in to return to Dubai at the start of September.

the Stone Roses are coming to Dubai before end of the year.

In sports news, we've heard that the Harlem Global trotters and WWe are going to be hitting the city in the next 6 months.

taBOO Feat. caRL cRaiG, tRiLOGY, tHuRSDaY auGuSt 24 Trilogy continues to fly the underground, leftfield dance music flag in Dubai, and for that we’re eternally grateful. And after closing with Inner City’s stupendous live show before Ramadan, they’re back with another American act, this time the Grammy-nominated Carl Craig. A groundbreaking electronic music icon, the Detroit DJ is responsible for some of the most adventurous but dancefloor friendly material in the last couple of decades, while as head honcho of Planet E records, he’s put out some dazzling, forward-thinking dance music. he’s worked with international orchestras, he’s remixed for the likes of hot

Chip, Tiga, LCD Soundsystem and was Grammy-nominated for his remix work of the Junior Boys. In short, he’s a dance music pioneer, and the first reason to be pant-wettingly excited about the forthcoming season.

DXB FeStivaL, FeStivaL citY, FRiDaY OctOBeR 5 We’re not short of large-scale events in Dubai, but not all of them return for another year. We’re pleased to say the Live Nation backed dxb Festival is one that is returning, with another large — if American-leaning — line up including Afrojack, Far East Movement and Kaskade. They’ve also moved home for their one-day festival this year, taking up residence at Festival City. The organisers are also promising

5 of thebest

Page 23: Infusion 181 Aug 19-Sep 2 2012

more additions to the line-up, so expect more EDM and local big-hitters to be announced in the coming weeks.

360 Re-OPeNiNG PaRtY, JuMeiRaH BeacH HOteL, OctOBeR 11The city might be short of tourist sights (what exactly do the big red buses take a tour of — construction sights and Al Quoz?) but one guaranteed crowd-pleaser is sundowners at 360. Aware of the bar’s lure, Jumeirah have renovated the venue this summer, replacing the restaurant downstairs with a 2nd room, adding toilets and a second set of stairs upstairs, and generally making the venue into one of the best in the world, let alone the country. Contracts are still being inked, so the full line up hasn’t been released,

but audio tonic continues for its 6th year, bringing over more cutting edge deep house, disco-influenced DJs. And with a 2nd room to play with, we’re expecting big things.

SaNDaNce, atLaNtiS, FRiDaY OctOBeR 12 Think back to a pre-Sandance time, tough isn’t it? The beach festival has grown to almost define the city’s event scene, with the buzz starting months in advance as people try to guess the line up. Well guess no more as we can reveal all. American piano-rock band The Fray will be on hand to deliver the crowd-friendly hits, while Mat Kearney has been given sunset duties with his big hit ‘Ships In The Night.’ And UK electro-rap-dubstep star Example returns once again for more big beats

and bass, alongside DnB kingpin DJ Fresh, breaks and hip hop wizard Krafty Kuts and house master Frankie Knuckles.

GOtYe, tRaDe ceNtRe, NOveMBeR 22 It doesn’t happen very often, but when it does, there’s one all-conquering, all consuming song that sweeps the world, from Dubai to Dubrovnik. And the latest craze is Australian/Belgian electronic-rock producer Gotye, who’s riding a global wave thanks to ‘Somebody I Used To Know’ which has now racked up nearly 300 million views. Quite what the crowd will sing along to after he’s finished his big hit is anyone’s guess, but the four minutes before hand could be one of the moments of the year.

INDIAN COPS hAvE launched a series of raids on clubs and bars in India’s most cosmopolitan city Mumbai, which the BBC reported is believed to be ‘a concerted attempt by authorities to restrict

dancing and drinking’ by some music fans. hundreds demonstrated against the raid though state home minister, Satej Patil, dismissed their concerns told the BBC cops are simply applying long standing laws. “We can assure people that actions against innocent people will not be happening.” “But we don’t want a stigma on Mumbai that rave parties are conducted here,” the Minister added. Details of the nightlife clampdown coincided with a fresh travel alert for Brits travelling to Goa warning of thieves operating in the heart of the hippy/ backpacker district. “Travellers staying in hotels on the smaller roads in the Candolim-Calangute belt are advised to be particularly careful when walking to or from the main road as there have been reports of bag snatchings taking place on these stretches since the beginning of 2012,” the Foreign Office warn. “The perpetrators approach on two-wheelers with headlights on full-beam to blind their victims, snatch the bags and speed off.”

Berlin’s iconic nightclub Berghain have announced they could be shutting down after New years Eve 2012, in response to massive fee increases demanded by Germany copyright organization

GEMA. Steffen hacks, chief of nearby landmark club Watergate, also said he’ll be forced to close under GEMA’s plans which will increase Watergate’s fees from €10,000 a year to €200,000. “how is one supposed to operate as a free entrepreneur under these kinds of conditions?” he pointed out, in an interview with Die Tageszeitung newspaper. Under GEMA’s new plan, which charges additional fees the longer clubs stay open, ‘average sized’ Berlin clubs currently paying €28,000 a year will have to pay €180,000, forcing the effective end of Berlin’s club scene, the Guardian suggested. Speaking to Der Spiegel, however, GEMA regional manager Lorenz Schmid appeared unconcerned. “The way I see it, they’ve been paying far too little in the past,” said Schmid. “I see no problem for a club manager if he has to pay €1.20 out of €12.” 5,000 Berliners protested against GEMA’s plan on the streets last week, while over 200,000 people have so far signed an anti-GEMA petition.

PROMOteR ON tHe RuN Escapade Music Festival organiser Nick vachon was reportedly on the run this week, after $600,000 was stolen from the vault of the Ottawa rave hours after 15,000 people danced to DJs including Afrojack, Avicii, Chuckie, and Eric Prydz. The Ottawa Citizen said’ police are expected to issue a warrant’ for his arrest imminently, after the 26 year old promoter subsequently vanished.

Album Reviews...WhILE DANCE MUSIC a decade ago might have been a riot of 130BPM plus beats, things are decidedly slower in today’s clubland. Low-slung, bottom-end bass tracks hover around 120 beats per minute, making things looser and funkier. But sonic renegade Andrew Weatherall has taken that template to extremes in recent years, creating slo-mo house and disco that sounds like little else around. As the infamous producer of Primal Scream’s ‘Screamadelica,’ Weatherall has always been a musical innovator, pushing, pulling and warping sounds to create a complex musical mix. Add this to his love of 100-120BPM house and disco, and you have his Masterpiece, a 40 track compilation that’s full of scuzzy, booming bass, tricky disco flourishes and, for the real fans, several never-heard-before releases. In short, it’s a cosmic, twisted, but always flowing journey from one of the scene’s pioneers. And with it being released on Ministry of Sound, hopefully a calling card for the slow music revolution that Weaterall is heading up.

A BAND’S MUSICAL GROWTh can be a difficult thing. Not everyone can enjoy chameleon-like changes in pop personality like The Beatles and still be lauded by fans and critics alike. And so when Linkin Park changed up their nu-metal meets rap template on previous album A Thousand Suns to include widescreen electronica and Europop, fans were divided (although the album still sold well into the millions). With their 5th album, Linkin Park have created a musical halfway house - tracks like ‘Burn It Down’ wouldn’t have sounded out of place on debut album ‘One Step Closer’ while ‘Lies Greed Misery’ brings them in line with the current dubstep/electro scene, with its frazzled, screamo vocals and day-glo beats. And with ‘Burn It Down’ and ‘Roads Untraveled’ they have two future stadium anthems that are among the best they’ve done. But while it might aim to please most fans, It’s too scattergun in its approach to be a classic. Andy Buchan

The RMx 1000 has taken Live SFx use to a whole new level. The new streamlined interface and been designed specifically for live remixing on the fly. It comes with a range of effects that not only are newer than any of the previous effects on the EFx units, but are all completely customizable to each individual user. The RMx give you the ability to chain a sequence of effects to your precise specifications through not one but two parameter knobs, add drum samples individually or looped (909 drum samples are built in as standard) or even add your own samples thanks to the super enhanced xpad. The xpad has four banks which means you can loop, mute, add, change and add Fx to your samples all running off a simple SD card. The BPM counter is in a league of its own which syncs with the BPM counter on your mixer giving you seamless loops

while sampling with the xpad. The massive DJ friendly knobs on the unit are ideal for DJs and like most Pioneer products perfectly placed for you to really get into the groove. My favorite effects thus far have to be the comp/gate, isolator and the noise feature for extra splash on the build ups and drops. The true magic of this machine is that Pioneer have been very kind to have also supplied the vST software which enables you to use the effects in the studio on productions, it works well with Logic, Ableton and most general production tools. We like a hands on approach to our music, and this wonderful piece of magic enables you to have a wealth of control over our music and effects! Pioneer RMX, Dhs 3,250, www.djcorner.ae

One thing you might not know about me is... I used to be a professional footballer from 17-21.

My worst ever job was... It’s hard to pick from being a footballer, record store music buyer or DJ, but organizing club events in Sydney was pretty stressful.

My favourite ever record is... Gui Boratto, ‘Azzurra’.

DJing is much like... Undressing a beautiful woman, over and over again.

Dubai’s clubbing scene is... Exciting, every night’s a party and every week has some pretty cool local and international DJs.

i’m really proud of... All my MUUI tracks; youtube.com/patrikcarrera

if i could change one thing about anything it would be...Let everyone enjoy life. Give the poor people some money, the homeless a home and the hungry some food.

i can’t live without... yellow curved fruit.

My biggest DJ achievement to date is.... Playing at some pretty cool clubs and festivals around the world alongside some pretty good DJs.

if you could DJ in any decade which would it be... I was DJing in the 00s and think it was amazing, so I’d do it all again!

if i could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be...Paris hilton or Ritchie hawtin.

i’m not a politician but... People should be taught to value people more than they value money or success.

Where to stay the Michelberger Hotel This has to be one of the coolest hotels I’ve ever stayed at, and within walking distance of most of the big clubs! At any time you will find people chilling in the lobby, or the jungle outside, where you can find ping pong, BBQs, football matches and the fountain of youth. It’s basically coconut juice with their own special twist, but after a week in Berlin you will try anything to recover some of the youth you probably lost along the way! If you love the Big Lebowski you are in for a treat because it’s the only movie playing on all of the Tvs in the hotel, you can even purchase a Dude style robe. Every little detail of this hotel was funny and unique which made up for their tiny rooms, but hey in Berlin you won’t be spending much time in your room anyways. michelbergerhotel.com

the clubs After living in Dubai for a few years, I have come to really miss the dirtiness of nightclubs, dancing into the morning, and hearing those long sets from DJs that truly take you on a journey. Berlin, with its relaxed licensing laws, is the perfect place to get all of that. People think I’m a wild girl when it comes to partying, well when it comes to Berlin I’m an innocent school girl compared to the insanity that goes on there!

Weekend When I went, Dirt Crew were playing lovely deep house at this split-level club. There’s a great open-air terrace, while we spent most of our time inside on the 13th floor (the 15th floor is only open on a weekend). The only thing I didn’t like was that it seemed quite a young, University-aged crowd, but the tunes were great. week-end-berlin.de

Watergate This line up is what initially made me book our trip to Berlin. Ame, h.O.S.h, hearthrob were playing live, while Stassy and Sebastien (and Maggie towards the end) were closing proceedings at midday the next day. During their six hour set Stassy and Sebastian changed genres seamlessly always keeping us on our toes and dancing until we left at almost 1pm. In Berlin the clubs

Watergate

Page 52: Infusion 181 Aug 19-Sep 2 2012

will never close as long as people are still dancing, a cool rule but it makes it really hard to leave! water-gate.de

tresor This is the scariest club I have ever seen. you walk in through a very dark concrete tunnel - it seemed very medieval - all the while you hear bassy banging techno as you walk towards the light. It was very smokey, the DJ booth was locked behind bars, and the crowd was more raver then clubber. We went to see Swayzak, which is

now S_W_Z_K, who played a very heavy techno set, which surprised me as I was expecting the deep house vibe from their Swayzak productions. One interesting thing from this club is that they give you a chip when you buy a beer, and if you return the empty bottle back to the bar they give you a 50 cent refund, a good way to keep the club clean without having to pay for a busboy. tresorberlin.com

Berghain On the trail to Berghain you will see many strange animals painted on the walls, but nothing will prepare you for the zoo inside! It’s notoriously hard to get into, but after a long queue, the scary man at the door with tattoos and piercings everywhere, let us in. We paid the 12 euros entrance, checked our camera as no cameras are allowed inside (if you have a camera phone you just have to be respectful

tresor

Page 53: Infusion 181 Aug 19-Sep 2 2012

and not use the camera). The main Berghain floor is known for its gay crowd, so you will see guys shirtless, bottomless or both. The soundsystem is one of the

best I’ve heard, and the techno is as hard as it gets. I got up on one of the podiums until a guy in his tighty whiteys (made into a thong) took over. The majority of the night we were in Panorama Bar. Tom Clark was playing the highgrade Records night, and

it was one of the best sets I’ve heard in a while. he would create an amazing build up, then at the perfect moment when the bass hit, the blinds would open letting in the sunshine, it made people cheer with their hands in the air. I loved those moments of unity with my fellow clubbers. It’s hard to find those nights when the music runs through your body, making it flow as if its owned by the music, this was one of those nights. After about eleven hours inside, which is actually a modest amount of time to spend in there, our disco legs were done and we walked home in the sunshine at 5pm. I was surprised to find out that the club opens on Friday and stays open non-stop until Monday! Some people enter on Saturday and don’t leave until Monday morning, now that’s hard core. berghain.de

club De visionaire Our last night in Berlin we wanted to keep things a little less crazy, but still enjoy some good music. Club De visionaire was the perfect place, and is owned by Ricardo villalobos. It costs 1 Euro to get in, which all goes to the DJs, and it looks like a tree house on the water. It had a real cozy vibe, a place where you can chill and actually talk to people. It has a tiny bar area where the DJ booth is and people dance. clubdervisionaere.com

sign of the times Our clubbing schedule in Berlin was different then I had experienced in most places. Going out at 3am is the norm, but that’s just for the warm up, the real party starts around 6am. Berliner’s often sleep at night and wake up early for a full day on the dance floor. It was so strange to be going to a club with the sun up and leaving when it's still up, it was like we never saw night.

How did you manage to get a gig in Berlin? It was through Moodmusic’s boss Sasse as I’m doing a remix for his label and it was the Moodmusic label showcase night at Watergate.

raXon:

Page 55: Infusion 181 Aug 19-Sep 2 2012

Tell us about the party...I was playing the Watergate club on the water floor alongside Sasse, Kruse & Nuneberg, Dirt Crew and Ewan Pearson. It’s just amazing how just half an hour after the doors open at midnight, it’s at full capacity all the way until 10am. Just fantastic, positive energy.

Did you play the sound you are known for or did you have to change your style at all to fit the night?yes, I just played what I usually play and the crowd was going for it.

i think a lot of international DJs who have never been to Dubai have a certain perception about clubbing in Dubai, do you think this will change now that DJs from Dubai are getting to play at some of the best clubs around the world?Personally I think that of course, but I think that the key is in production. A lot of international DJs don’t get a chance to listen to DJ mixes from people they don’t know.

every city’s clubbing environment is constantly changing. Berlin is currently under threat, some of its best clubs might shut down in the next year, what are your thoughts on this?I think that no matter what

happens nothing will affect the music and there will be new things that will surface.

How have you seen Dubai’s night life change since you started DJing here and how would you like to see it move forward? It’s changing constantly, new clubs open every month if not every week. There are some great venues out there, but unfortunately owners just wanna make numbers hence you will be served mainstream/radio music. It’s always great to see a few parties that really are driven by real music, but Dubai is growing and so is its underground scene.

What are you looking forward to post Ramadan?I’ve got a few gigs in Ibiza in September, and then a 2 gigs in ADE in Amsterdam. And of course the new 360 launches in October, I cant wait for that.

Weird News...

A family of bears drunk more than 100 cans of lager after breaking into a holiday cabin in Norway.

“They had a hell of a party in there,” cabin owner Even Borthen Nilsen told Finnmarken newspaper. “The entire cabin was destroyed. The beds and all kitchen appliances, stove, oven and cupboards and shelves were all smashed to pieces. It’s almost like taken out of Goldilocks and the three bears. The bears had got into the cabin through a window, before drinking all the family’s beer, eating all the food and smashing up thefurniture.”

A teenage motorcyclist who deliberately set off 26 different speed cameras giving German police the finger in each one has been fined Dhs20,000. Dimitri Salovic, 17, covered up in biking leathers and a full-face helmet, hid his registration number before roaring around Munich at speeds of up to 70mph, a court heard. Police finally nabbed him when they worked out a pattern to his route and set up an undercover traffic team where they thought he’d strike next.

DuBai: Following the opening of its office in Dubai, Facebook has revealed the first of what it claims will be many alterations to the social media site tailored to the local Arabic market. As of next week, users across the Middle East and North Africa will have the opportunity to respond with ‘Insha’Allah’ to an event invitation, along with the usual ‘Join’, ‘Maybe’ and ‘Decline’. “This was the result of several focus groups across the region,” said Facebook Arabia’s Regional Solutions Manager, Majid Johnson. “Adding an ‘Insha’Allah’ button for Facebook events was by far and away the most popular request.” Facebook Arabia also announced plans to introduce a ‘Platinum Upgrade’ specifically for GCC markets. “This was another big winner in our focus groups,” claimed Johnson. “Facebook Platinum is going to be our premium option for the more exclusive social media user. It’s going to come with a significant signing on fee, but will offer five-star services, such as a bespoke wall and 24-hour status concierge facility, along with space for just 50 members at one time.” Facebook Platinum is expected to launch this November.

vsWISQO RAyNER

The verdict: Another close battle, but Wisqo wins for his incessant insults — ouchies!

What was your nickname at school? Baby Elephant! And not because of the size of my trunk...

I didn’t really have one. My first DJ name was ‘DJ Twiglet’ though, haha!

Have you ever injured yourself at work? Does slow but constant damage to my eardrums count? After years behind the decks when others hear silence, I hear ‘eeeeeeeeee.’

Are hangovers injuries?

it’s not big and clever but… Rayner owns a pair of David Beckham brand flip flops.

Wisqo is on first name terms with everyone at the Kremlin in Bur Dubai.

My best claim to fame is…

Pretending to be the owner of Infu-sion to score some chicks at the Nasimi parties. It worked.

Looking after ‘In Transit’ a band fronted by Trans Global Underground who performed their first gig here at the Chillout Festival and are now go-ing to headline a huge UK Olympics concert called ‘River of Music’ in July.

Describe your best track in 5 words… head wobbling dance-floor killing machine. Pumping, sexy, rolling, dark, fun.

Have you ever been arrested?Nope, but I constantly want to arrest Rayner for crimes against fashion. Not in the UAE…

Your answer to everything is… yes. Unless Rayner asks me to be his wingman at The Jebel Ali Club again.

Send me a press pack.

What’s the best insult you could give each other? It looks like your face caught on fire and someone tried to put it out with a fork.

John Goodman called, he wants his appetite back!

The Monkey isn’t afraid of a bit of hard work. I’m a full time nit-picker, and supplement that income by being a banana banker in my spare time, speculating on the Dole market. And of course, I still find time to write this bi-monthly diatribe.

But I’ll tell you what isn’t a job (you were wondering where this was going, weren’t you?). Blogging. Blogging is not a job. Blogging is a hobby, blogging is something you do when you can’t get a real job writing. Blogging, in the wrong hands — which is most — is an online diary which reveals how mundane, how trite and materialistic your life is.

Sure, blogging is fun, blogging is harmless. But let’s face facts: your monthly up-dated blog where you post videos of your favourite kid’s cartoons, cat memes and blog-hot remixes (ie. ones never heard outside the internet) is never going to be filed under life changing, more life wasting. So next time you claim that you’re a full time blogger and wonder why people are stifling a snicker, wonder no more.
