Stations are connected to each of the rooms with intercom and security

Hospital Food

Food is prepared daily by our on-site kitchen staff, using fresh, natural, first-

class ingredients. Depending on the patient´s health requirements, doctors

may prescribe a specific diet.

The diets are classified in two groups:

• Normal diet: this diet has no restrictions. Patients will be offered a daily

menu from which to make choices.

• Restricted diet: this is a special diet, according to patient circumstances.

Therefore, patients will not have a choice of menu. If the doctor advises a

restricted diet, patients may only have the food offered for the restricted

diet.

All menus have been carefully devised with help from our Nutritionists.

If you do not know which diet you should have, or if you have any queries

regarding your diet/food, please ask the nursing staff.

Pre-surgery/Pre-tests

Prior to surgery and some tests, it is important that the patient removes the

14.2 UMBILICAL CORD BLOOD BANK

The umbilical cord is normally discarded after birth. However, the blood

within it is one of the richest sources of stem cells. If it is conserved after

birth, the umbilical cord can be useful in the future. Stem cells are the basic

components which can develop into any other cells in the body, i.e., blood

cells, nerve cells and heart cells. They can restore the function of the blood

and immune system or the organs in our body.

They are harvested by extracting blood from the umbilical cord immediately

after the birth of a baby. It is a simple procedure, takes only 10 minutes, and

is painless, causing no harm to mother or child.

Donation to a Public Blood Bank:

This is a voluntary donation, altruistic and designated to an unknown reci-

pient. Hospital Parque San Antonio has had arrangements with a Public

Blood Bank since 2007.

Procedure:

• Consult your gynaecologist during antenatal visits.

• When you are admitted to the hospital to give birth, indicate your wishes

to the medical staff (midwife and nurses).

Donation to a Private Blood Bank:

This is a voluntary donation, private and designated to your own baby or

family member. Cells can be stored for future use using cryopreservation, a

process in which the living cells are frozen.

Procedure:

• Consult your gynaecologist during antenatal visits.

• Ascertain which companies have an authorised arrangement

with Hospital Parque San Antonio. *

• Contact the company of your choice.

• Bring the extraction kit provided to you by the company.**

Page 27: ingles con portadas-1 - Málaga Health con portadas definitiva_0.pdf41/2002 del 14 de noviembre. In emergency cases, admission will take place on arrival – with the necessary information

25

* The Hospital requires that the companies have an agreement with the hos-

pital as well as the legal authorisation to perform these procedures.

** The Hospital only extracts the specimen; it cannot be held responsible for

the conservation, transportation or dispatch.

14.3 UNIT FOR OTOACOUSTIC EMISSIONS

In the first few weeks after birth, all newborns can have their hearing tested.

This test is known as an otoacoustic emissions test.

The majority of the organs of a newborn are not fully develo-

ped. Checking the correct function of a child´s ears and resol-

ving any pathology as soon as possible is very important for

normal development and can help prevent future problems

(language, psychomotor development and the emotional and

social development of the child).

Early diagnosis of deafness in newborns can be determined by

a simple test which does no harm to the child and consists of

placing an earpiece in the ears while the child is sleeping or

relaxed; sound is delivered through the earpiece. When the

hearing is normal, the test registers a response to a sound.

Advantages of the test:

• objective

• simple and non traumatic

• reliable

• reproducible

• very fast, taking about 1 minute for each ear

Multicolour high definition CAT scan

State of the art equipment which produces three-dimenstional images in

seconds causing minimal discomfort to patients.

Due to its speed and high quality of images, precise studies can be perfor-

med of moving organs - like the heart - for non-invasive cardiac diagnosis.

The powerful software also allows virtual endoscopies (colonoscopies, bron-

choscopies) and three-dimensional angiographic images as well as skeletal

studies of high precision. This machine is invaluable when speed is vital for

certain diagnoses.

High field Magnetic Resonance

This type of resonance is an effective method of diagnostic imaging. It is

non-invasive, able to supply a clear picture of every organ, facilitating early

diagnosis of multiple lesions which are less evident in other studies or are

difficult to reach.

High resolution studies are performed which offer a substantial increase in

the quality of the images. Due to the velocity of image reconstruction (255

images per second) the duration of the test for the patient is shorter.

de an immediate diagnosis and treat-

ment for this pathology, dealing with

disorders such as miction (passing

urine) and abnormal growths. Early

diagnosis can prevent the develop-

ment of diseases and enhance the

prospect of cure.

Early diagnosis via:

• Study of the symptoms

• Physical examination (including rectal exam)

• Additional examinations: PSA test (prostate specific antigen), ultrasound of

the urinary tract, measurement flow, assessment of renal function.

Page 45: ingles con portadas-1 - Málaga Health con portadas definitiva_0.pdf41/2002 del 14 de noviembre. In emergency cases, admission will take place on arrival – with the necessary information

These tests are recommended for:

• Men of 50 years and over

• Men with family history of cancer or prostate disease (45 years)

• Men of any age who present urinary disorders that interfere with their

quality of life.

Diseases of the prostate are not exclusive to the older man; examination of

the organ provides the benefit of applying therapies that can improve qua-

lity of life and, in some cases, can prevent progression of incurable diseases.

29. UNIT FOR LITHOTRIPSY

This unit, situated in the area of out-patient diagnosis and treatment (lower

ground floor) has state of the art technology in diagnosis and treatment of

renal and ureter stones as well as treatment of certain orthopaedic diseases.

to the pathology of kidney, ureter and bladder. This procedure does not

require any anaesthetic or sedation; patients can be discharged as soon as

the treatment is completed.

For stones that cannot be treated by Extracorporeal Lithotripsy, we can per-

form a ureter-renoscopy with Internal Lithotripsy and extraction of the stone

fragments. This treatment is carried out in a surgical theatre under general

anaesthetic involving a stay in the hospital of 24 to 48 hours.

The unit for Orthopaedic Lithotripsy treats tendinitis (with or without calcifi-

cations) such as tendinitis of the shoulder, knee or Achilles´ tendon, tennis

elbow, heel spur, plantar fasciitis, bursitis, pseudoarthrosis.
