If you have been considering putting a pool in the backyard for the kids or as a means to cool off on those scorching summer afternoons, eventually you’ll have to choose between inground or above ground. For some, there is no debate and they absolutely must have one or the other, but for those who are still on the fence, the decision can be a little trickier.

The decision will alter the landscape of your property for years to come, and there are many factors to consider. A good first step is to learn as much as you can about each option and then go from there.

Above ground pools are easy to spot, because as the name suggests, they are positioned above the ground. For the longest time, an above ground pool was thought of as something you get if you can’t afford an inground pool, but that isn’t really the case anymore. These days, it’s possible to find above ground pools that look modern and sleek and utilize all the best materials.

Of course, an above ground pool is still going to save you money over inground, even with the modern updates. You can enjoy an above ground pool with less excavation, less construction and fewer labour costs. It’s also possible to transport an above ground pool to a new location, if desired. Obviously this isn’t possible for an inground pool.

Above ground pools usually consist of a support structure made of aluminum, steel, wood or resin. Then, a vinyl liner is laid over top of the structure. Resin pools won’t corrode or heat up like steel and aluminum pools. Different liner and wall patterns are usually available to enhance the overall look of the pool.

Some people feel that an above ground pool is an eyesore in the middle of a backyard, but when the savings and newer designs are factored in, it starts to seem less so. After all, an inground pool may not stick up from the ground, but it still takes up a good deal of space.

Depth is sometimes an issue with an above ground pool. In most situations, your above ground pool can only be a four or five feet deep. This is enough for having fun and some swimming, but diving isn’t really possible.

For many people, an inground pool is the only way to go if they want to get a pool in their backyard. An inground pool gives the perception of affluence and class. There are four basic types of inground pools people can choose from:

◦ Vinyl◦ Fiberglass◦ Concrete◦ Gunite

Concrete pools are often used for public swimming pools with higher numbers of swimmers. Concrete pools are relatively labour intensive, but will usually last for quite a few years.

Vinyl inground pools are often less labour intensive than concrete, and may also be less expensive. Vinyl pools use pre-fabricated materials, which simplifies the construction process. You can also get vinyl pools with a variety of liner patterns to suit your taste and design style.

Gunite inground pools are flexible and may be built in a variety of different shapes. Gunite is often used commercially, but some private homeowners also like the versatility it offers. Gunite pools are finished with concrete and plaster, and you can often add options such as waterfalls or custom steps to enhance the look.

Fiberglass inground pools come ready-made in one piece. They are preformed and prefinished and installation is usually quite fast. You typically need fewer chemicals for fiberglass pools because algae have trouble growing on the smooth surface.

It is true that inground pools can cost a lot more than above ground pools, but they also last longer and create a look that above ground pools can’t match. You also have options with depth when it comes to inground pools.

As for property value, an inground pool can go either way. Since it is a permanent fixture in your yard, any prospective buyers will determine if it’s a good investment or not. It may lead to you having trouble selling the house, or you may sell it faster and for more because it is there.

There are several factors you will need to consider before you decide which type of pool you want to install. Some of the more important ones include:

◦ Budget◦ Property size◦ Property layout◦ Why you want it?◦ Ability to maintain the pool

For some people, budget restrictions or the layout of their yard will basically decide for them. If you want to spend as little time possible maintaining the pool, you may lean toward above ground. If you love to dive and swim laps you may lean toward inground. Are you planning on staying at this house forever, or do you want to move?

If budget isn’t a factor, take your time and go through all the pros and cons before you make your final decision.
