The newsletter of the Northwest Alfa Romeo Club
IniezioneIniezione
With a whirlwind of activity as we neared December, the NWARC Holiday Party came together and people
showed up on a cold evening in Seattle. With one less weekend than normal between Thanksgiving and
Christmas, there were many scheduling conflicts which meant some of our folks couldn’t attend. Despite
that, the space filled up and those attending all seemed in wonderful holiday spirit.
There were many changes this year starting with the location. After look-
ing at a number of options we had chosen the Spitfire Grill in downtown
Seattle. They have a Redmond location that is always quite fun and bois-
terous. Their Seattle location is in the space that used to be the funky Sit-
N-Spin. Located in the Denny Regrade area just north of downtown Seat-
tle, it is a cool spot except for the parking which can be tough. The front
half of the place is a popular bar serving good food and almost always loud
and fun… if you’re into that scene. Luckily for our needs, they had a pri-
vate party space as well which allowed us to set the sound level where we
needed.

Holiday Party Cont’d...
Prior to most of us arriving, a couple members of the NWARC holiday party team arrived and decorated the
space and tables with excellent trimmings, Alfa flags, and more. Tables were set at one end of the room for
the Silent Auction items while the dining tables were to the other. Food tables and a staffed bar were on ei-
ther side of the remaining open space in the room. It was a little more crowded than we are used to from
years past, especially when we were at the Museum of Flight which had tons of space.
The Silent Auction tables had numerous items this year donated by our generous members and friends.
From baskets full of goodies, jams, dinners, house concerts, tickets to Concorso Italiano, a set of wheels,
artwork, miniature cars, design services, and much, much more, the tables were full for our holiday shopping
needs. Debi Schmid had donated a very artistic Christmas tree display, while I donated 3 Alfa Hot Wheels
cars. The Faherty’s donated their dinner party again while Cindy
Akana donated a dinner and House concert. There were plenty of
wonderful items and it all benefitted the club and our charitable side.
Another aspect that was new was the food was served buffet style
which turned out to be just fine. The food was prepared by Amy
Mekling Catering who had a dedicated chef serving a wonderful Italian
meal for us. There were choices of pasta and some wonderful home
made sauces… fantastico! The appetizers were good even if their
timing was a little weird. Dessert included choices of cheesecake and
chocolate mousse which seemed to vanish as fast as it showed up.
With the change to a buffet style from our traditional table service it
seemed to work very well with people getting the volume and style
that fit their tastes. My gut feeling is we’ll continue with this change going forward!
One change we won’t stick with, turned out to be a painful mistake, especially for a few attendees. The loca-
tion was designated as a bar… 21 and over only. There are always a few people who attend our Holiday Par-
ty who are under 21 years of age so this has always been, and will always be, part of our plan. Miguel and
his mom, Diane, drove in all dressed up nicely and in holiday mood only to be told Miguel was not allowed
in… Ouch. I brought both of my daughters who have attended many events before but since one was born in
1995, that meant it was only a matter of time until she was “carded” and kicked out. Ouch again. The Spit-
fire Grill, as the provider of the space and rules is clearly responsible to make sure the renter is aware of any
limitations or restrictions like this. Though they may have included it in some sort of communication, none
of our committee was aware so it falls back to the Spitfire… who obviously would have lost us as a renter if
we’d known. Sadly, they were not very apologetic… we will not make that error again.

Though the Bar issue caused pain, it didn’t ruin the evening. The conversations, laughter, drinking, and party
feel was very good throughout the evening. The Silent Auction sales were brisk and people were happy with
what they won / bought. There were give-aways and door-prizes as well thanks to people like Alfa of Taco-
ma, Jon Norman, International Autoparts, and others! Live music was an added treat being provided by Cindy
Akana who brought her keyboard and played a number of nice background songs as well as a few Christmas
tunes for the crowd.
With a handy podium made from a lectern and an Alfa flag, we started the presentation thanking the wonder-
ful help putting on the event, then introducing the current and new club officers. Next we reviewed the
events from 2013 with a slide show reminding everyone what they attended, while reminding others what
they missed… hint, don’t miss club events if you want to have a fun 2014!
Then our last Alfista of the Year, Mirko Freguia, came up to award the new Alfista of the Year award. He
started with a wonderful background of how his choice was made. Mirko read from the book The Last Open
Road, by Bert Levy, using the wonderful description of one of the
story characters who is a dedicated car person. The words could
fit a few members in our club, but as he continued Mirko honed
in on one person we have almost all crossed paths with over our
time. The 2014 Alfista of the Year is Joe English. Joe’s generos-
ity and support over the years through his personal side, and
Group 2 Motorsports has been outstanding. With donating space
for meetings, expertise for race prep, parts when we need them,
tech inspections, and just always sharing a positive happy car
attitude… he’s a great choice.
Overall, the event went really well and, speaking for NWARC, we
hope you all have a wonderful Holiday Season. The party was a
nice way to close out a wonderful year in the best Alfa Romeo
club in the area. The party only works when all of you attend so
thank you to the people who could be there, and to those who
helped make it happen by donating, calling around for logistics,
arranging the pickup of donations, working with the caterer or
space, making decorations or auction cards, or Cindy for the mu-
sical treat. I especially want to thank Judy Gehring who went
into 4th and 5th gear as the event approached. Without her ef-
forts we wouldn’t have had any party to write about at all. Words and photos by Fred R

Last Notice Before the Event! Many of you have participated in our annual New Year’s Day Anti-
Football Drive previously. It’s not that we really have anything against football, its just that we’re in the midst
of the off-season for driving and want an excuse to drive our cars. We may even miss the people and want a
good reason to hang with people we like rather than our families. The current weather forecast is for a high
of 48 degrees with high overcast… no snow or storms in sight! The weather gods seem to like our events.
This year, we’ll start in West Seattle at Starbucks / Safeway upper parking lot.
After our short driver meeting, we’ll try to leave by 8:40 AM. We’ll
wander to Alki before heading to the Fauntleroy Ferry dock to catch the
9:25 AM boat to Vashon Island. The 310’ M/V Tillikum can carry 87
cars, and has numerous restrooms, so we should be fine. (WSF does
not take reservations for this run.) Once on Vashon Island, we’ll ex-
plore the roads and the funky independent nation of Vashon stopping
for a visit to the old country store.
We’ll catch the ferry off the south of the Island and head for a early after-
noon lunch and optional stop at LeMay—America’s Car Museum.
When: January 1st at 8:30 AM
Where: Starbucks / Safeway
4754 42nd Avenue Southwest West Seattle, WA 98116

Return: Seattle area around 6:00 PM (after the Car Museum)

Just the Facts...
There are a few great car collections in the world. Sometimes we can see a few
of these cars at shows or concours events. Rarely, one of us gets a chance to
tour one of these collections and Joe Faherty got his chance. At our January
club meeting, Joe will be our special guest sharing the details and photos from
one such tour.
Joe toured the Nethercutt Collection in Sylmar California. The collection was
started by J.B. Nethercutt whose family was behind the Merle Norman Cosmet-
ics business. J.B.'s interest in beautiful cars started at an early age, but his
collecting started in 1956 with the purchase of a 1936 Duesenberg and 1930
DuPont Town Car. Now there are over 130 cars and a number of other displays
including a NW steam locomotive favorite, Vancouver’s retired Royal Hudson.

New Club Officers… Background Check Time
It’s claimed that about 2500 years ago, the Greek philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus once said, “The Only
Thing That Is Constant Is Change.” To prove him right, NWARC constantly, or at least annually, holds elec-
tions for the 4 club officers; President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. With three new changes
out of four positions it is a great time to say thank you to our current board members, Merril Gordon, Bill
Gehring, Thomas Jermann, and Gordy Hyde who have volunteered their time and guided the club nicely
through 2013. Thanks team! Now with 2014, the election changes are... Bill Gehring moves into the role
as President, Ken case joins the board as Vice President, and Ron Calkins returns after a couple year vacation
as Club Treasurer. Gordy Hyde keeps his solid role as Club Secretary.
Here is a little background on the President and Vice President now on the 2014 NWARC Board.
Bill Gehring, NWARC President: Judy
and I have been in the club since June
1985, but really haven't been active until a
few years ago. We bought our Alfa Romeo
in January 1985 after a doctor on Mercer
Island had originally bought it, but when
his wife became pregnant four months
later, they sold it back to Alfa of Tacoma.
Guess what happened four months after we
bought it?! When we bought the car from
Lino, he said there were a lot of nice people
and nice cars in the club and we should
attend an event. The first event was a club
picnic at Lake Sammamish and the next
was the Monterey Historics where Dexter
and Georgia Baker parked their motor
home. Our first meeting was at a Mexican
restaurant in Eastgate and Gene Pavola,
who still occasionally comes to a meeting,
was president. We did a few club things for
a while but when youth soccer, basketball
and baseball began happening we backed
off until our sons graduated from high
school.
My first "Alfa encounter" had been at
Western in the 60's where a friend had
brought back a GT Junior from Germany.
I never really considered one though, until
about eighteen years later when our Fiat
spider started getting the tinworm and Judy and I went to Exotic Motors in Bellevue to look at a used soft
window Porsche targa. They were an Alfa dealer and even though I didn't think I would fit in a spider, Judy
encouraged me to sit in one. It seemed that she had a boyfriend in high school who had one and she still
thought they were pretty neat. Spiders, not boy friends. (now, in spite of creaking bones, I can still even fit
in the Giulietta. Maybe not for too long, though) They tried to sell us "an executive car" but I'm glad we
ended up with the car we did. The story of how I stumbled upon our present spider was mentioned in the
last Iniezione and how we found and acquired our "barn find" Giulietta is pretty well known so I won't repeat
them here. Eventually in columns, you may read of my previous Morris Minor, bug eye Sprite, TR3 or TR4 as
I muse of the old days.
The main reason we've been attracted to the club is the people. They're great. We've enjoyed them and the
events and a couple of years ago, when Fred R asked if I would be club VP I thought I should give back a lit-
tle so that eventually led to my being president. I don't look forward to writing the columns, and they defi-
nitely won't be as entertaining as Merril's, but I have some ideas and at the end of my term, hope to leave
the club an even better organization.
Ken Case NWARC Vice President: I’ve been a member of NWARC since 2008. Louisa and I walked into
Group 2 Motorsports for our first meeting, and Fred R walked right over and welcomed us. Been an Alfista

since 1957 when a friend's mother bought a Giulietta Spider. (cool mom)
At that point I was a penniless teen so my first ALFA did not occur until
1965 when I graduated from engineering school. As soon as I started my
first real job I purchased a 1963 1600 Normale Spider. Loved that car.
Campaigned it in autocrosses with some success and accumulated more
speeding tickets than I really needed.
Then, life happened. Marriage, two kids, etc. No more ALFA's for nearly
40 years. Then in 2006, while attending festivities in Monterey, I saw a
restored 1600 Giulietta Spider that was a dead ringer for my old car.
Same color, same interior, same everything. Bam! I was reinfected. For
two years I searched for the 1600 Spider Veloce I had always wanted. I
finally found it in 2008. It was a mess; see through floorboards, wrong
engine, rusty parts in a box, the whole deal. Two more years and a ridicu-
lous amount of money latter it looked great, it had the right engine and it
sort of ran right. (that is still a work in progress) I was a happy man.
In my non-ALFA life I'm happily married, 20 years, have two grown kids by
a previous administration, three grand daughters and a son-in law who
owned an Alfetta. (he has since gone over to Porsches but he is allowed to
be married to my daughter anyway)
I am an Industrial Engineer by education, by license, and by career. Thirty
years an efficiency geek at Hyster, General Foods and for the final 25 years
at Safeway. It was great fun and it allowed me to briefy also be a line me-
chanic assembling huge lift trucks, a line foreman processing peaches, a
courtesy clerk bagging groceries, a night stocker putting up groceries, a
truck driver hauling groceries and a store manager selling groceries. At
the same time I ran investment real estate for 38 years on the side.
Louisa and I are big fans of the Half Lap tours, and have not missed one
since Sophia (my beloved Giulia) was restored. For us it is the perfect
combination of the social side of the club with the appreciation of our be-
loved ALFAs. We would like to see even more events where ALFAs are
driven in conjunction with social activities.

Looksmart makes great miniature
cars in 1:43 scale. They make a
lot of Alfa Romeos and now they
even came out with the new Alfa
4C Geneva AutoShow versions as
shown with the 3 colors; white,
silver, and the great dark red,
Rosso Competizione. Each of
these have the fugly headlight
setup that will be on the premier
version being sold in Europe and in the photos from Eric Hawley from early in 2013. I already have the dark
red prototype version of this miniature which is very nice! Now they even sell a cool version in the matte
white with tri-color stripe livery, Safety Car for the World Superbike Championship series. All can be bought
from AB Models for about $179.00 each. ( [email protected] )

I always enjoy history… some an-
cient, some recent. I find the con-
nections between the past and pre-
sent very intriguing at minimum
and exciting at other times. Those
who wander the Half Lap trips or
New Year’s Drives often get a dose
of my historical interest when I in-
clude it in the route guide to ac-
company the Turn-by-Turn instruc-

While normal people are sitting

announced a fun drive from Paine

January 1997 featured a huge technology step for
NWARC with John Burrows creating a club website.
Ten years ago the news was Gordy Hyde as Presi-
dent and Dave & Jane Emerson as Alfisti of the
Year. Dan & Linda Jardine spent their anniversary
in Italy and shared a wonderful bunch of words and
photos including photos of the “fearsome banking”
on the Monza Autodromo.
The Potlatch dominated the 2005 issues starting with
the March issue and going through September. That
really was a magic year! The magic carried into the
January 2006 issue where it reported on the
$11,750 we gave to Seattle Children’s Hospital after
the raffle effort on the Alfa Spider.
As we get a little closer to today, our January 2009
issue touted how we planned to defy the cold weather
and drive up Whidbey Island for our Anti-Football
Drive. It also covered the Holiday Gala and Tony &
Debi Schmid winning the Alfisti of the Year award.
For me, the most memorable moments are actually driving
my Alfas over the years and these articles sure
help to jog my memory. As I write this, it has
been 35 years, 3 days and 9 hours from when I
bought my first Alfa Romeo. There are a lot of
miles and almost all were fun. That was a his-
tory that was only added too by being a mem-
ber of Northwest Alfa Romeo Club. By Fred R
