INITIAL IDEAS

CONTENTThe documentary will be based on black youths-life after crime. This is a pinnacle subject for the documentary to be based on due to the timing of a Channel 5 documentary called ‘Gangland’. This helped to reinforce stereotypes about black youths to whomever was watching. The young generation took to Twitter to vent their frustration about the misleading scenes in the documentary and how people outside of London viewing this might have now a negative perception of all black people. This documentary won’t be so to speak ‘glamorize’ the lifestyle but to see the reformed characters of what happens next after you leave that lifestyle because you don’t have to exit the lifestyle either 6 foot under or in jail.

TARGET AUDIENCE

My target audience will be aimed at all races but the age ranges from 15+ as this is to give insight to youths and elder people that have such a negative perception of black youths and for youths to see there is always an out in every situation but to also focus on the fact that you don’t have to choose the lifestyle and how it affects the people around you.

I think this will appeal to the black youths at most as they do want people to see a balanced documentary and not only focusing on the negative.

Page 4: Initial ideas

MODE OF ADDRESSThe documentary will be ‘speak’ to the audience in 1st person as I plan for the subjects to speak directly to the audience so they can engage with the story. This will really add to the documentary as it’s a personal story told by the central protagonists and this will involve the audience. The subject will be telling the story to the audience so it’ll be done best in 1st person .

Page 5: Initial ideas

STYLE

The documentary will be in the style of participatory-led as the subject will be introducing areas of importance whilst telling his story. There will be a central protagonist that the documentary focuses on. It will also be observational in the sense that I will be observing the events in their everyday life and how their past events affects their life now.

Page 6: Initial ideas

CONVENTIONSThe conventions I will use are cutaways as this can engage the audience whilst the voice over acts as a ‘narration’ which will keep the viewer interested and this should appeal to the target audience as there are various different visual aids. I will also use text graphics, for example, when the subject is introduced for the first time there will be astons displaying their name and why they are relevant to this documentary. Non-diegetic sound will be added again to add to engaging the audience.

Page 7: Initial ideas

PURPOSEThe purpose of this documentary is to change perceptions of black communities as it’s constantly affecting their lives. The perception I want the documentary to change the most is that ‘black people are thugs’ and ‘they’re lazy that’s why they resort to gang activities’ .

Page 8: Initial ideas

LENGTH

I plan for this documentary to be at least 10minutes to fully delve into every individual protagonists story as well as explaining the scarce opportunities black people are given and how that affects their life.

CONTENTThis documentary will be based on media portrayal of Muslims as due to Muslim extremists group there have been a rise in hate crime towards Muslims. The media have misled certain members of the public with scaremonger tactics, I get the vibe that ‘You should be scared of all Muslims due to the fact they share the same religion’. It has even been reported by a journalist that escaped from the ISIS stronghold didn’t see them pray and even burned the Qur'an.

Page 11: Initial ideas

TARGET AUDIENCEThis documentary will be broad aiming at everyone to give insight to the public about what the perception that all Muslims have to face on a day-to-day basis does to them. My documentary will be appealing to Muslims as they are the topic at hand. Also to show them how ignorant it is to generalize a group of people because of some of that demographics' behaviour.

Page 12: Initial ideas

MODE OF ADDRESSThis documentary will be in the style of 1st person as it makes the documentary more personal and the intimacy of the documentary can engage the audience. It’s to take the audience on a journey with the central protagonists and potentially emotionally connect with the audience.

Page 13: Initial ideas

STYLE

The documentary will be participatory led and broken up into parts of allotted time. For example, the introduction will be 2mins, 4mins if the central protagonist's experience or opinions and another 2mins of closing to end the documentary. "How would you feel if this happened on your doorstep?' As a lot of people are ignorant to things that happen in other areas because they don't have to deal with it.

Page 14: Initial ideas

CONVENTIONS

I will be using POV, cutaways and scenarios so the viewers watching this can emotionally connect to what's happening and when they out themselves in that situation see how it affects them to group together and prevent this from happeningI'll also use mise en scene for example, when the central protagonist is telling his/her story there'll be a Mosque in the background. This is to again to the authenticity of the story and documentary.

Page 15: Initial ideas

PURPOSEMy purpose for wanting to create this documentary is open up the eyes of people who blindly judge Muslims without knowing them. This generalisation is illogical and I'm emotionally connected to this idea as my dad is Muslim and I don't want to have to fear for his safety everyone time he has to leave home to go to the Mosque. 'A bad apple won't spoil a bunch in this case. Many Muslims are subjected to hate crimes because of the scaremongering news which instil fear into people. How can a group of people that 'claim' to be Muslim can change your view of them as a whole? It was even published that an escaped journalist said Isis burned pages of the Qur'an yet you believe they are Muslims. It's beyond me how people can have jilted views on people based on manipulative news.

Page 16: Initial ideas

LENGTHThe length of the documentary will be maximum 10mins as the documentary needs to focus on the focal points I want to highlight from how Muslims feel as a whole and what they feel about the increase in hate crimes against them and how to fight it so it can stop.

Primary Research:

I gave out a questionnaire to 4 16+ year olds for them to fill out.

Page 18: Initial ideas

CONTENT This documentary will be about police relationships with black communities. I think again is a focal thing to highlight as relationships with the police are important when it comes to who you can trust to keep you safe. However, in recent news there has been issues with whether black communities can trust due to the way they are treating them and how many of them are 'accidentally being murdered' whilst in custody or when trying to arrest them.

Page 19: Initial ideas

Target AudienceMy target audience is broad as this documentary is supposed to open eyes of other communities about what we go through as a black community when it comes to police and their behaviour when dealing with us. This is supposed to appeal to them as this is an ethical problem that needs to be fixed but can’t if people are ignorant enough to look the other way until it's something to do with them. This documentary will appeal to black people as this helps inform others of the hardships we have to go through as a community with police.

Page 20: Initial ideas

MODE OF ADDRESS

This again will be in 1st person to address this serious issue to the viewers, this is so they understand the severity of this problem and how it can potentially affect our lives. Most people aren't standing with the black community in support but rather standing against by ignoring it or branding it as attention seeking.

Page 21: Initial ideas

STYLEThe documentary will be in the style of presenter led. I’ll interview our school police about this issue and how we could possibly change it.The conventions used will include: cutaways of location that are important and add to the story, as well non-diegetic music in minor to reflect the serious tone of this documentary, I'll also add in headlines of things that have previously happened between the black community and police.

Page 22: Initial ideas

PURPOSEThis is for the people that don't understand what's going on and just branding our problem attention seeking and how it affects us if we don't stand together. I myself am affiliated with the black community and strongly think that this is a very serious problem that everyone is ignoring because it's not happening to them and I want to show them what they are allowing to happen to other HUMANS. How are we supposed to trust police to protect us if they keep physically abusing us? If you aren't standing against it, that means you are standing for it.

Page 23: Initial ideas

LENGTH

This will be a little longer than 5 mins as everyone is kind of aware of what's going on with the tension between the police and black community. This documentary will be highlighting the problems it creates when grated wrongly.

Page 24: Initial ideas

RESEARCH

Primary Research:I conducted a focus group with 6 people aged between 17-24 years old and they all agreed and said that this should be highlighted as it’s a very important subject to give insight on from people that will never be subjected to profiling.

CONTENTThis documentary will be about misogyny in the music industry and how difficult it is for the women who want to be musicians to get recognition for their talent. Also how people say that women rappers can't be better than male rappers because they don't have a 'strong' voice. They are always undermined and always face the most hate for the way they dress, the way they rap and who they hang around with. If a female rapper were to only have a group of guys as friends hanging around her or have a big male feature on their track they obviously must have done something for them to get it, or the people she hangs out with aren't friends and assuming there’s something more.

Page 26: Initial ideas

TARGET AUDIENCE

My primary target audience is musicians as they should know how hard it is for women rappers to succeed in the rap game. The double standards are stifling in music careers as they can't essentially rap about the same things males rap about. They could be labelled a 'whore', 'slut'. This is to highlight how ignorant some people are without realising it which adds to how difficult the problem is.

Page 27: Initial ideas

MODE OF ADDRESS

The documentary will be in first person as I intend to interview independent female artists that have their own story about how hard it has been in the music game for them to gain the recognition they deserve. This is so the audience can connect with the main subject at hand and engage in the story.

Page 28: Initial ideas

STYLE

The documentary will be participant led as this documentary is about the subject's story in dealing with sexism and double standards in the music industry and how that can affect your music. I'm currently in communication with the artists I want to do a documentary about.

Page 29: Initial ideas

CONVENTIONS I plan to do cutaways of location of where the artist started doing music and the transition from there to where they are now. I plan to do the interview maybe outside a studio or in a studio or somewhere that adds to the story of the subject's life. There'll also be music of the artist playing in the background to add to the authenticity of the documentary.

Page 30: Initial ideas

PURPOSEMy purpose of this documentary is to open the eyes of people that want to be ignorant when it comes to addressing sexism and double standards in the music industry as it’s a important problem that needs to be addressed. I as woman knows how difficult it is with double standards and what ignorant men say on Twitter about women. We can't behave in a certain way as its deemed undesirable yet they can.

Page 31: Initial ideas

LENGTHAs this is a real problem that needs to be highlighted so it can be fixed the maximum will be10mins as I'm focusing on two different subjects that have stories to share. This is to inform everyone who thinks that ignorance is bliss that the problem doesn't go away even if you choose to ignore it.

Page 32: Initial ideas

RESEARCHPrimary Research:

I conducted a second focus group to talk about the blatant disrespect of female music artists with people between the age of 16-21. 3 out of the 8 people didn’t agree with there being sexism in the music industry. This is why I wanted to do this documentary to inform people of the misogyny and the hardships they have to go through.
