INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY If Millstadt schools are cancelled, all programs are cancelled at The Senior Center. If there is a school delay, the Senior Center will run on their regular schedule. If Millstadt Schools are on vacation, tune to Channel 2
or 5, for Senior Center closings or delays.
Happy New Year!!! Another year has come and gone. As we start a new one, it’s a good time to look back at our past year and where we want to go this year. This past year we have served over 18,000 meals. They have been excellent meals and everyone tells me they really
enjoy the home cooking. The Millstadt IGA, West End Tavern and Restaurant and Breadeaux Pizza have been doing an excellent job. The price we charge for the meals does not fully cover the cost of the food and the preparation of it, but so far we have been able to cover most of the difference with various donations and fundraisers. Another big change this year is that we have been offering more bus rides to different stores at least four times per month. Our finances have been quite stable over the past year and if we can keep up the donations and fundraising we should be good to go for the year to come. Thank You For All You Do For The Millstadt Senior Center.

Dorothy Louise Keck Dorothy Keck, age 94, passed away Friday, December 19 at 10:20am CDT at Columbia Convalescent Center in Columbia, IL where she had been residing the last several years. The eldest daughter of Prosper C. and Della (Hagely) Soucy, she was born Dorothy Louise
Soucy on September 19, 1920 in East St. Louis, IL. She married Henry F. Keck on November 5, 1947 in Belleville, IL. He preceded her in death on September 26, 2002 after 55 years of the most loving of marriages. Dorothy was also preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Prosper, George and Oliver Soucy; and two sisters, June Kolb and Marjorie Soucy. Dorothy is survived by two daughters: Carol Ricketts of Morton, IL and Diane Keck of St. Charles MO and four sons: John Keck of Belleville IL, Henry (Ellen), David, and Paul Keck, all of rural Millstadt, IL. She also leaves nine grandchildren: Matthew (Amy-lynn Fischer) Ricketts, Michael P. Ricketts, Julie (Jessica King) Keck, Jennifer (Matt) Rossmiller, Henry F. Keck III, David Chad Keck, Lauren Keck, Jaqueline Keck, and Jennifer (Rodney) Haas. Great-grandchildren include: Dorothy, Anna, Sophie, and Heidi Rossmiller, Rebekah Leah and Nathaniel Henry Ricketts, and Conrad Haas. Dorothy was the first woman to graduate from St. Louis University with a degree in mathematics and the first woman admitted to Pi Mu Epsilon, the mathematics fraternity there. During World War II, in an intensive effort by the Air Force to train all personnel in radio, Dorothy taught night and day at Scott Air Force Base. Her students ranged from young recruits to high-ranking officers much older than herself. Her intelligence and dedication earned her the admiration and respect of everyone lucky enough to know her in this life. After her marriage Dorothy devoted her life to helping her husband on the family farm and raising her six children. In 1966 she began teaching junior high mathematics at Millstadt Consolidated School. Making many friends among teachers and former students, she continued there until her retirement. Dearly loved, Dorothy will be missed by her family and her many friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Inter Faith Food Pantry or Millstadt Senior Center.

DID YOU SIGN IN? Knowing who is at lunch at the Center is important for a number of reasons. First of all it’s good to keep track so if someone isn’t there for a few days we can contact them to make sure everything is ok. Second, when you sign in and are registered we are able to submit your name to receive our grant money to help pay for the meals. A way to look at it is that if you aren’t registered and signed in we can’t send a bill for your lunch to the Area Agency on Aging.
Your Help in This Matter is Greatly Appreciated

2015 New Year’s Resolutions Resolutions are promises a person makes to do an act of self-improvement. Keep your resolutions simple and resolve to do something to make you a better person in 2015:
* Think positive, laugh more often; * Eat healthier; * Read a book in January; * Drink less alcohol; * Volunteer more; * Pray more, be more spiritual; * Complain less. Most of us fail to stick with our resolutions because they are too demanding, too vague or too unrealistic. A recent study found 59% of people kept their New Year resolutions in 2014. How can you be one of those who will keep their resolutions? Start by writing down your 2015 Resolutions and then do something!

Everyone through the Center is able to hear Betty Krupp play Christmas Music on the new sound system.
Christmas Music Pine Cone Bird Feeders We had so much fun last month making pine cone bird feeders. My friend Jean Colbert was telling me and I thought it would be an easy craft and fun to “give” to the birds. First we needed pine cones, and since I didn’t think of it ahead of time we had to purchase them but next year we can get lots for free. Well, I didn’t realize it but ours were cinnamon scented but I don’t think the birds will care if they are really hungry. I was in charge of tying ribbon on each one to serve as hanger. Everyone then took and rolled the pine cones in peanut butter and used a knife to get it all over the cones. They then rolled the cones in bird seed and making sure to coat the entire cone. Everyone packed theirs up to hang in a tree at their house. We laughed while we made them and sure

Millstadt Enterprise January 1915 Although the United States had not entered World War I in 1915 the local newspaper carried articles from Washington, D.C. regarding Great Britain and actions across the ocean. Great Britain was searching neutral vessels for contraband and food items destined for enemy countries. Other WWI news included: A dead whale was mistaken
for a submarine on the northern Dutch coast. The whale drifted ashore riddled with three-inch shells. Thirty tons of cocoa was purchased by the French government with a Pittsburgh company. The cocoa will be used by French soldiers. A New Brunswick, N.J. company received a $1,000,000 contract with the Russian government for horseshoe calks. The company will work day and night in an effort to fill the order within seven months. In news around Millstadt the Ed. B. Jung store announced a Closing Out of Business Sale. The store featured dry goods with American Calico priced at 5 ½ cents per yard and cotton flannel at 10 cents per yard. Handkerchiefs were discounted from 5 cents to 4 cents. Table Pride Brand Alaska Salmon was sale priced at 2 cans for 25 cents. For the cold season, Dr. Bell’s Pine Tar and Honey was sale priced at 20 cents for the small bottle and 40 cents for the larger size.

Services Available Meals on Wheels One of the Center’s most important programs, the Meals on Wheels program provides daily meals to people who have difficulty getting out of the house and/or cooking for themselves. Not only are we able to supply necessary food, but the driver delivering the meal is able to ascertain how the client is getting along and share some companionship. We have a number of folks dedicated to providing these services. They give freely of their time and energy to deliver the meals, make contact with the recipient and report back to the Center. The majority of the “regular” drivers volunteer one day per week and most have said it is highly rewarding for them.
Lunch Program Lunch is served Monday through Friday at 12 noon. You must be 60 years of age or older to qualify for this program. It is appreciated that if you want lunch you call the center by 3:00 pm in order to sign up for lunch on the following day. When you come in you may sign yourself up for the next day. If you like, you may sign up for the entire week or month. If you know that you can not make it and you have signed up, please call and let us know that you will not be here and tell us when you will be back for lunch. If you have any questions concerning the lunch program please contact Patty Evansco at 476-3731.
