Vale Phil Middleton

I begin this newsletter with the sad news of the passing of Phil “Middy” Middleton, a long-time member of the College’s Farm Agricultural Advisory Committee. One of the main aims of the College is to ensure our students work and train on a farm that re-flects industry best practice, and to achieve that we rely heavily on local farmers like Phil to regularly volunteer their time and help keep us abreast of what’s going on in “the real world”. We greatly appreciate Phil’s contribution to the College and wish his family all the best at this difficult time.

2016 Annual Report

The College’s Annual Report is now available on the College’s website. The Annual Re-port includes a summary of our students’ activities and achievements in 2016, finan-cial and farm enterprise reports, as well as a summary of 2016 Parent, Student and Staff surveys. Our 2016 Annual Report can also be downloaded from the Department of Education’s Schools Online website.

ANZAC Day Parade March

Eight local students: Leah Winter, Claudia Budrikus, Kayla Emmerton, Aisha Douglas, Gus Thomas, Niven Brown, Jamie Moore and Sam Marsh represented the College at Denmark’s ANZAC Day Parade March this year. The march provides us with an oppor-tunity to join in with our local community and pay our respects to those service men and women who have so courageously served Australia in various military conflicts over the past century. It is a pity that the bulk of our students were still away on holi-days because I am sure many more of them would’ve been very keen to march.

New Equine Position

The College’s Equine training area has con-tinued to grow, both in size and importance, over the past several years. This year we have forty-five students from Year 10 through to Year 12 undertaking Equine as one of their industry training area options. Last year that growth was recognised when

we created a full-time Level I-II Agricul-tural Technical Officer position specifi-cally for the Equine area. This year, to better reflect the nature of the role, we have decided to readvertise the posi-tion as a Level 5 Vocational Trainer and Assessor (Equine). This highly paid po-sition is currently being advertised widely to attract the best possible appli-cants. We expect the successful person to commence at the start of Term 3.

Deputy Principal Position

The College’s Deputy Principal position will also be advertised shortly with a view to the position being permanently filled for the start of Term 3. Along with the responsibility of managing the College’s daily operations, the Deputy’s role includes managing the College’s Registered Training Organisation status and coordinating Vocational Education and Training (VET) in our non-agricultural industry training areas. The College employs a Level 5 Vocational Trainer and Assessor to coordinate VET in our agriculture training area.

College Ball

This year’s College Ball is set for Satur-day June 10 and will take place at the recently completed Riverside Club in Denmark. While the Ball is primarily a night for our students, it does provide one of the few opportunities during the year for our parents and College staff to get together and enjoy each other’s company over an evening meal. This years dinner will be held at the South-ern End Restaurant at 6pm. If you’d like to join us this year please RSVP to our school office as soon as possible so we can make bookings. Parents who stay overnight in Denmark are also invited to come in and have breakfast with students on the Sunday morning before travelling home.

Just a reminder to parents about our approach to the ball. First and fore-most we approach the College Ball as a

school activity and we therefore aim to make it as safe an event as possible for our students. In keeping with that approach, it is our preference for all residential students to remain in residence on the Saturday night after the ball. Students requesting leave after the ball will only be released to their parent or legal guardian.

Day students attending the ball will also need to be collected by their parent/legal guardian after the ball. Alternatively, Day students and their partners can bring a swag and camp at the College overnight. Stu-dents with car licences will not be permitted to self-drive to and from the ball.

More detailed information about the Col-lege Ball will be sent out to parents soon.

Annual Board Meeting

Due to a clash with our Registered Training Organisation Re-Registration audit and our Farm Management Plan Workshop, the An-nual Board Meeting set for Tuesday 6th June, 2017 has been postponed. We will inform you in due course when the next date will be.

The normal Board Meeting will take place on Friday 2nd June from 2.30pm—4.30pm.

Electronic Delivery of Student Reports

Parents should’ve received an electronic version of their son or daughter’s Term 1 Progress Reports in addition to the tradi-tional hard copy report delivered via postal mail. We will continue to provide parents with both an electronic and hard copy ver-sion of school reports for the remainder of 2017 and review whether both are neces-sary for 2018.

course examination. These requirements are listed in the Year 12 Information Handbook which is available on the Authority website at http://www.scsa.wa.edu.au/publications/year-12-information.

Student Permission

All Year 12 students will be asked to give permission for the following:

(a) Release of their name should they win an award

The School Curriculum and Standards Au-thority award winners are published in the media and on the Authority’s website if per-mission to do so has been given by the stu-dent.

(b) Use of school work for creating support materials

The Authority is seeking permission for the use of school work produced during 2017, e.g. assignments, projects, portfolios, tests, school-based exam responses.

(c) Use of examination responses (written and practical)

The Authority is seeking permission for the use of ATAR course written and practical examination responses (copyright owned by the student)

It is probably easiest for everyone if stu-dents complete the online declaration and permission here at the College, but your son or daughter is encouraged to discuss each of the above questions with you prior to doing so. Indeed, the online procedure has been developed so that your son or daughter can-not complete the student permission unless they click on ‘Yes’ I have discussed my re-sponses to the above questions with my parents/guardians’. Further information is available on the Stu-dent declaration page via School Curriculum and Standards Authority’s Year 11 and 12 website http://senior-secondary.scsa.wa.edu.au/the-wace/student-declaration

Home Weekend

A home weekend has been planned for the WA Day public holiday weekend from 3rd June to 6th June. The College learning pro-gramme will continue to 4.00 pm on Friday 2nd June and resume 8.10 am on Wednes-day the 7th June. The College provides a travel day on leave weekends to allow stu-dents extra time at home. However, the travel day also results in lost instructional time at the College. It is therefore very im-portant that students complete a full work-ing day on Friday 2nd June and are back in time for a 8.10am start on Wednesday 7th June.

Muresk Institute Open Day

We have just been notified that the Muresk Open Day will be held on Saturday May 20. This should be an excellent opportunity for interested Year 11 and Year 12 students and the general public to discuss recent developments and courses available at the Muresk Institute.

The Muresk brand has been shown to be very resilient even after Curtin University of Technology closed the programs on the campus and moved them back to Perth.

Central Regional TAFE is working in partner-ship with Charles Sturt University to deliver the Bachelor of Agricultural Business Man-agement at Muresk Institute.

This degree provides students with a strong foundation in agri-business and the skills and knowledge required to pursue a career in a variety of agricultural industries. Stu-dents learn skills in business management and finance as well as the technical aspects of managing agricultural production.

The University of Queensland is also deliv-ering an Integrated Diploma Program in Agriculture at Muresk with a focus on new technologies. This is the third year the pro-gram has been offered in WA. Ross Murray and Richard Williams from the University of Queensland will discuss entry require-ments, course content and employment opportunities at the Muresk Open Day.

2017 Year 12 College graduates should consider the Charles Sturt/Muresk degree and the University of Queensland Diploma in Agriculture as options for study over the next few years. I am hoping to take interested Year 11 and 12 students to Muresk on Friday 19th May and after attending the Open Day, return to the College by 6.30pm on Saturday 20th May. Short Courses

A number of staff and students com-pleted the AusChem chemical users course recently. This two day course assists users of agricultural chemicals to manage risks associated with chem-ical use and to better understand obli-gations in the areas of duty of care, quality assurance and environmental management. Students were also in-troduced to integrated pest manage-ment, chemical selection and the ap-plication and transport of chemicals.

Year 12 Forestry and Conservation and Land Management students will be involved in a Chainsaw Operation and Maintenance course over the next two weeks, while Year 11 stu-dents are required to complete a Sen-ior First Aid course later in the year.

Student Declaration and Permission online

Each year the School Curriculum and Standards Authority requires all Year 12 students to complete an online declaration and permission.

The deadline for students to complete this process online is Thursday, 22 June 2017.

Student Declaration

All Year 12 students will need to de-clare that they are aware of the re-quirements to achieve the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) and for sitting the ATAR

From the Deputy It is therefore very important that students complete...

OLNA Testing

Results from the first round of OLNA testing will be available to schools from 19 May. As soon as the results are available to us we will forward the information on to stu-dents and parents. The next round of OLNA testing this year will be in September.

Work Experience-Final Week of Term 2

The following options are available to students in the final week of Term 2 from June 26 – June 30:

Year 10’s will have the option of participating in Country Week Sport or continuing at the College with their normal College program.

Year 11’s and 12’s will have the option of participating in Country Week or under-taking a one-week work experience placement. Year 12 students who are enrolled in a Certificate III Agriculture will also have the op-tion of staying at the College and continuing to work towards this qualification.

By this stage Year 11 and 12 students should know whether they are involved in Coun-try Week 2017. If students are not going to Country Week they will need to undertake a week of school-authorised work experience. Information regarding the one-week block of work experience at the end of this term has already been sent out to all par-ents of Year 11 and 12 students. It would be greatly appreciated if parents could re-turn the Work Experience Placement Information form to the school as soon as possi-ble.

Additional Work Experience for Year 12 Trades and Agricultural Studies Students The College recognises the importance of our students, particularly those who are apprenticeship, traineeship or employment bound, experiencing a range of different work places during their training program. We also acknowledge that work experience placements, particularly for our Year 12 Trades and Agricultural Studies students, often lead to apprenticeship or job offers the following year.

In light of this, an additional one-week block of work experience is available for all Year 12 Trades and Agricultural Studies students in the second last week of Term 2. These students then have the option of completing another week of work experience in the final week of term or participating in Country Week.

Exams

Year 11 and 12 ATAR students will be com-pleting exams in Animal Production Sys-tems, Plant Production Systems, English, Mathematics and Biology over the coming weeks. There will also be an Externally Set Task (EST) completed in Year 12 General courses. ESTs are in-class assessments com-pleted in weeks 3-5. The assessments carry quite a heavy weighting towards student grades so it’s important that the students are fully prepared.

All students enrolled in a Year 12 General course are required to complete the EST developed by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority for that course. The EST is compulsory and forms part of the school-based assessment.

Our teachers will endeavour to prepare stu-dents for all assessments but as always it is the students’ responsibility to turn up pre-pared with the right equipment and suitable notes (where permitted) for the assess-ments. For details about the EST please check the School Curriculum and Standards Authority website www.scsa.wa.edu.au.

Physical Education and Sports

The college has purchased two road bikes to help the students to be successful in events such as the Harvey Sports Carnival Triathlon and the Blackwood Marathon Relay. Mr Woodruff and other staff will be able to plan training rides with staff and students in the lead up to events and for general training.

Training and sports participation is being planned using the TEAM APP system. wacoadenmark.teamapp.com

STEM

STEM is learning based on the idea of educating students in four specific disci-plines — Science, Technology, Engi-neering and Mathematics. Here at the college we feel well placed to add value to this type of learning experience. Re-cently we have been out to Greens Pool for a Biology excursion, studying marine life. We have a number of maths pro-jects happening including dam and silo capacity measurement. In Computing we are also studying digital technologies for communication such as web site design and using the college drone for marketing and study of pastures and drainage.

Questacon

As part of our increased focus on sci-ence and technology we have invited Questacon Smart Skills Initiative to the college later this year to undertake some great science projects with students in all year groups. Questacon are experts in cultivating creative thinking and helping students to gain confidence using hands on learning techniques. We look forward to reporting on how this works out. More details on the work carried out by Questacon can be found here: www.questacon.edu.au

HASS (Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences)

Year 10 Geography students visited Ocean Beach on Tuesday 2nd May, to observe nat-ural processes in action, and to discuss envi-ronmental and management issues with Ranger Kym Phillips.

Students have been studying coastal pro-cesses and are using a Human-Environment Systems Model to record and analyse the sometimes complex relationship between the physical environment and the activities of people who want to use and enjoy the beach. Next week Shire Sustainability Officer Donna Sampey will visit the class to discuss the extent of natural erosion at Ocean Beach, and how the Shire plans to deal with it in the longer term.

From the Head of Studies Our teachers will endeavor to prepare students….

Week 4 - Term 2 – Autumn/Winter in Denmark makes for relatively warm swimming conditions at our beautiful beaches. Staff and students often take advantage of the ocean’s negative ions to promote positive vibes.

ANZAC Day – 25th April – a day of national remembrance

Students and staff represented the College at the mid-morning Commemorative ser-vice, College representatives Gus Thomas and Leah Winter took part in the laying of wreaths. Thank you to all the students who represented the College. Anzac Day is a time at which Australians reflect on the many different meanings of war. The day has been further broadened to include those who lost their lives in all the military and peacekeeping operations in which Australia has been involved.

Residential Camp – Cunderdin 27th May 2017

Denmark students are heading up to Cunderdin on the 27th May for a combined WACoA ‘social’. Information regarding this event has been sent out to parents, please return as soon as possible; thank you to WACoA Cunderdin for hosting this event.

Leavers Jackets 2017

They have arrived and almost all have been collected. The jackets look very smart with the class uniform and we have received some very positive feedback regarding the jack-ets. In future the school will send a letter at the beginning of fourth term for future 12’s so that parents/students can opt in or out of having a jacket; it is not compulsory to have a Leaver’s jacket. It makes sense to have this order placed as early as possible so that they arrive in the Term 1 holidays ready for the change of season in Term 2.

Post school ball parties – what parents and students need to know

Students look forward to having a great night out at the school ball, but parents may be concerned about what could hap-pen afterwards at post school ball parties, especially if alcohol is involved.

Parents need to know that the Western Australian secondary supply laws now make it an offence to supply anyone under the age of 18 with alcohol in a private setting without the permission of a parent or guardian. The law carries a hefty fine of up to $10,000.

The law is particularly significant for post school ball parties because it places respon-sibilities on both parents and students.

Parents who host post-ball parties where alcohol is provided must be certain that children attending the party have been giv-en permission to drink by their parent or guardian, without relying on the child’s word alone. The law offers strong support for parents to resist pressure from their children to drink alcohol and this reason to refuse can also send a strong message to the person hosting the party.

There are other good reasons why young people should not drink alcohol. An Aus-tralian School Student Alcohol and Drug Survey study found that of students who drank on a single-occasion in the previous week, more than one-third drank at harm-ful levels. The post school ball party ranks as a single-occasion where alcohol-related harm is likely to occur.

The evidence indicates that young people are more likely to engage in dangerous be-haviour when they drink than older drink-ers. Young people are more likely to risk being physically injured and become in-volved in risky sexual or violent behaviour.

Our school is committed to protecting stu-dents from harm and we urge parents to respect the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council’s recommenda-tion that children and young people under the age of 18 do not drink alcohol.

Welcome back to all the students. I hope they all had an enjoyable break. Second term is an extremely busy one with lambing of the College’s Merino and Crossbred flocks, as well as a big AI program for the College’s beef and dairy cattle herds. Students are also completing Chemical Han-dling and Chain Saw competencies for their various courses both of these being run through TAFE as well as onsite training for many of their Cert II and Cert III competen-cies at the College. Around the farm we are still busy spreading fertilizer and lime, removing old fences and replacing them, tidying up some of our old buildings and creating areas for Aqua-ponics, storage and general tidy up as well as a new work station area for the farm staff employees so they have their own office space and work areas. Training of stock and students is still being undertaken in preparation for the Royal Show with training also commencing for the Farm Skills competitions. This year’s Show will be done on a slightly smaller scale than other years due to accommodation spaces being less and the configuration of males to females. Because of this our accommoda-tion will allow us to take 16-18 students for the 5 day duration of the Show with stu-dents being involved in :

Stock showing—Beef Steers, Merino Wethers, Stud Corriedales as well as assisting with other studs.

Farm Paraders—Beef and Sheep Han-dling

Stock Judging—Beef and Sheep

Wool Judging and Display—Sheep

Sheep Dog Challenge—Sheep Students may also if selected stay at home in Perth and travel in each day. This will allow us to take a few more students if this happens.

From the Farm Manager Preparation for the Royal Show is underway….

Farm Rosters

Farm Rosters for Term Two will soon be listed on the College website. These are in a PDF format and can be downloaded from the web. Students have been allo-cated to each farm section so please familiarise yourselves with the roster and encourage your child to fulfil their obligation.

The rosters can be located under the “Students” tab then select “Forms and Rosters”.

www.denmarkag.wa.edu.au

The College will also be training up to 3 Farm Skills teams for the Thursday event as well. Because of the limited numbers a very rigid selection process will be undertaken with the following points being used as a guide: (a) Previous attendance at shows will

not be a pre requisite. (b) Commitment to the College’s Good

Standing Policy (c) Male/Female numbers will be pre-

determined due to accommodation restrictions.

(d) Continuous training and commit-ment to the Show events will be required.

(e) Greater emphasis may be placed on Year 11/Year 10’s due to the exam timetable for Year 12’s in third term and their requirements to fulfil this.

Once we have a list of students that are willing to participate and a better understanding of their roles we will inform parents.

Conservation and Land Management

As part of the Conservation and Land Management program students have been working with the De-partment of Parks and Wildlife on a project to re-store and protect an area around the Mad Fish Bay carpark in Denmark. This is a project that will con-tinue for a couple more weeks yet and involves students applying a large amount of brushing to exposed areas to prevent further wind erosion and the installation of bollards to prevent vehicles driv-ing into sensitive areas. Leah Winter, Claudia Budri-kis, Jayden Carr, David McKelvie, Raymond Twist, and Jennifer Waters have been involved in the pro-ject to date and will continue to take part over the coming weeks.
