• Alphasat, also known as Inmarsat-4A F4, was launched on the 25th July 2013
• Alphasat provides performance improvements in terms of power, capacity and available spectrum in the I4-EMEA region
Alphasat Update Background
• Inmarsat successfully transitioned the EMEA (I4F2) Classic Aero and SwiftBroadband services to Alphasat on 24th March 2015 (replacing I4F2 at the same orbital slot)

˃ New development that entered flight trials in 2014, that
• Will satisfy the demand for greater cockpit bandwidth
• Be backward compatible with Classic Aero
˃ Provides cockpit communications
• 2 Channels of Cockpit Voice
• ACARS Data, supporting FANS 1/A
− Reduced ACARS message delivery times
• Prioritised IP data supporting new applications:
− Electronic Flight Bag
− New Operational IP-based applications
− Flight Data Recorder data download
˃ Enhanced aircraft position reporting and tracking
• Built-in: i.e. additional to ADS-C & waypoint reporting
• Position reporting rate is highly configurable
SwiftBroadband (SB) Safety
In-built aircraft position reporting and flight tracking
Low cost + lightweight terminals

SwiftBroadband Safety Status ˃ All system infrastructure modifications in place and tested
˃ ARINC 781, RTCA MASPS and RTCA MOPS standards have been developed, ICAO Manual close to finalisation
˃ First STC has been completed on Hawaiian Airlines B767
˃ Successful first FANS flights of SB Safety for passenger operations
• In the initial phase of an in-service evaluation during 2015 on 8 HAL B767 aircraft
• Reduced aircraft separations being applied from the start of the trial
• Signing with second airline for 3 MD11 aircraft to join FANS evaluation
˃ FANS operational evaluation approval expected by the FAA PARC CWG in Q1 2016
8 © Inmarsat Global Limited 2015 – ICAO NAT PBCS/2 17-19 June 2015
˃ The FANS Over SwiftBroadband Safety (FOSS) project initiated at FAA PARC CWG will monitor SB Safety service performance against the ICAO GOLD
˃ Specifically it will examine
• Service availability
• CPDLC message latency performance against the GOLD RCP240 performance criteria
• ADS-C message latency performance against the GOLD RSP180 performance criteria
˃ If the required service performance is deemed to be met by the PARC then the PARC CWG chair is expected to recommend that the service can be used for routine FANS operations, including reduced separations
