outdoor LIVING

By Dr. Carla Gull

Traditionally, natural elements have been a part of our holidays. Continue to make nature a part of your holiday traditions this year.

BriNGiNG oUtSiDe iNBring the outside in by decorating with pine cones, pine garlands, and other natural elements. We make natural ornaments, using various bits of nature. Using a hot glue gun with supervision, pine cones, sweet gum balls, sticks, and more, form ornaments to hang on the tree.

FeeD the BirDSDecorations outside can also help feed the birds. Cut cardboard into holiday shapes like trees and stars, making a hole in the top. Spread with peanut butter and roll in birdseed. Tie a ribbon through the hole and hang on a tree outside.Make an ice sculpture with natural elements by using a bundt pan. Add natural elements, such as cranberries, greens, etc., and water. Freeze the water. Take the ice sculpture out of the pan and hang from a tree.

SCeNtS oF the holiDaySBring the scents of the holidays into your home by making a simple simmering sauce. Simmer orange slices, cinnamon sticks, and cloves in a couple of inches of water. Mason jars of simmering sauce make a great homemade gift to a friend or neighbor.

holiDay traDitioNSMake nature a part of your holiday traditions. Many families hunt for a perfect Christmas tree at nearby tree farms. We go on a New Year’s Day hike each year. We also do Christmas nature scavenger hunts, looking for the colors of the season, snowflakes, evergreen trees, shepherd hook branches, etc. How do you make getting outside a part of your holiday tradition?

GiVe the GiFt oF NatUreTry the gift of nature as part of holiday giving. One year, we gave cousins the gift of a monthly nature club, spending time outside together monthly. Other gift ideas may be tools to explore nature, such as field guides, nets, bug jars, or gift certificates to local natural activities.

Dr. carla gull blogs at www.insideoutsidemichiana.com. She is often seen with her four tag-along explorers in the greater michiana area.

‘tiS the SeaSoN… to learN! By Lindsay Saunders Associate Executive Director, B&G Club Middlebury

What’s the key to a successful after-school program?

FUN! And it’s fun that Brittany Bayless creates every day as

Education Director in the Club’s Learning Center where she develops, coordinates, and implements the Boys & Girls Club’s academic programs.

FUN With a pUrpoSeFrom discovering the unique qualities and habitat of the polar bear through making and experimenting with ‘blubber’ to exploring the scientific method and creatively testing hypotheses in the group Mad Scientists, Brittany’s programs provide the hands-on experiences that encourage Club kids to fall in love with learning.

“I try to always find a way to make the topic I’m teaching fun and engaging,” says Brittany. “At the Club, we do this through high-yield activities designed to give members interactive, fun experiences that foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills.”

helpiNG thoSe Who NeeD US moStIn addition to programs like Lego Robotics and Book Club, Brittany also manages Super Kids, a 36-week homework assistance and career exploration program which provides academic support for Club members performing below grade level in math and reading.

the BiG piCtUreWhen they’re not receiving academic assistance through tutoring, Super Kids members participate in career sessions that introduce and allow them to explore a variety of different professions and career opportunities.

“The career sessions allow us to drive home the importance of education and motivate our kids to succeed,” says Brittany. “Each session is led by a guest speaker or presenter in the profession who takes the time to tell our kids the important role education played and continues to play in their career.”

“We were able to serve 40 Club members last year through Super Kids.

99% of our Super Kids participants increased their performance in math on the program’s post-test.” – Brittany Bayless

2014 Just Flew right By!by Julie Whitehead, Chamber Marketing Committee Chair

Here are a few tidbits from the Chamber of Commerce…

DeCemBer thirD FriDayThis year’s Third Friday in December falls on the 19th, only six days before christmas! Our theme for the December Third Friday has always been Sharing Means Caring. in our wonderful community, we unapologetically focus on the reason for the season. Our schools still decorate for the holiday and providewonderfulprogramsfilledwithmusicandreminders of the greatest of gifts. i challenge you this year to mark your calendars today: reserve time to take a break from the hustle and bustle. gather up your kids, your spouse, your dogs, your friends, and plan to walk around the downtown shops, up to the library and back, looking at the ice sculptures created by our guest artisans. i’m sure you’ll be able tofindsomehotcoffeeorcocoainato-gocupattheVillageInnortheLegendaryGrindtowarmyourhands(anditwouldn’thurttohaveapieceofpieora muffin while you’re at it!) The merchants will stay open late once again that evening in case you need a few more gifts to wrap. They will also be collecting non-perishable food items to give to the middlebury Food Pantry. wouldn’t it be a good thing to give just a little more to folks less fortunate this year? we are truly blessed to live in our community. So take some time to stop and reflect on the gifts that we have, to take in the lights and sounds of the season, and to give something to help someone you don’t even know. make plans to join us on December 19th from 4-8 pm.

Kelly Rose, Founder and Chairman of the Board of EverGreen RV, accepted the baton from Art Decio at Skyline RV which they just recently acquired. Rose plans to honor their great tradition and “innovate that into our EverGreen tradition as we build our own heritage. There is no doubt in my mind that Art Decio is Elkhart County’s number one citizen, and it is a humbling honor to purchase Skyline from a man of his character and integrity.”

the Birth oF eVerGreeNIn his mid-20s, Rose co-founded ASA Electronics with Tom Irions. In 1990, at the age of 40, he sold his 50% stake to Irions and purchased Starcraft, bringing it out of bankruptcy, and his corporate office was located in

Goshen for two decades. After taking it public in 1993, he then sold Starcraft to another publicly traded company and, in 2008, started EverGreen, relocating to Middlebury four years ago. “When we first bought all of the assets from a bankrupt company and started EverGreen at the height of the recession, I bought the building two days before Christmas. Some thought it was a crazy move, but others felt it was the best move we could have ever made. Many times when you travel against the grain, the road less traveled can give you more inspiration and opportunity for success.”

Why miDDleBUry?“Even though it’s grown and changed a lot, Middlebury is full of ‘salt of the earth’ people at the foundation. It’s

different from every other community, with a system of down-home, family core values,” says Rose. EverGreen employs around 600 people, many Amish. “They bring a sense of spirituality to the workplace that can affect a lot of good people who struggle. They influence their coworkers with peace of mind, family orientation, and God.

“We have some really good people who know what they’re doing, starting with Mike [Schoeffler, CEO] and Mark [Boessler, President and COO]; it just permeates throughout the company from management, to production, and beyond. The people in this company are what I am most proud of.”

eVerGreeN aND liFeStyleEverGreen RV manufactures lightweight, affordable, quality-built travel trailers, toy haulers, and fifth wheels. You might have noticed them in the news quite a bit – besides acquiring Skyline RV in October, they also have won awards from RV Pro (Best of Show 2014) and RV Business (a Top RV debut, 2013) for their Lifestyle Luxury RV line. Lifestyle manufactures premium models for year-round living comfort, including a shockingly spacious living area, luxurious furnishings, and beautifully-crafted cabinetry.

Charity makeS a DiFFereNCeChild and Parent Services, or CAPS, knows EverGreen well. The CAPS building is the ‘Joy Rose Center’, named after Kelly Rose’s mother ten years after she passed away. Besides CAPS as their number one charity, EverGreen also works with the Boys and Girls Club, Elkhart County 4-H Fair, and The Crossing, as well as several other charities. Giving back is extremely important and is something they will continue to do in our community.

lookiNG to the FUtUre

EverGreen is different because of the quality of their products and the character and integrity of their people, according to Kelly Rose. Those people and products are bringing the company into the next chapter right now.

December 2008Kelly Rose launches EverGreen RV in Middlebury, Indiana.

January 2009EverGreen acquires their first 125,000 square foot manufacturing facility.

December 2011Anticipating launch of Lifestyle Luxury RV division, EverGreen expands into second facility.

December 2013EverGreen becomes the fastest growing company of the top 15 manufacturers in the Towable RV segment for both unit growth (85.5%) and share growth (60.4%).

June 2014EverGreen commits $1 million to a new Customer Service and Parts Center locally.

Early October 2014EverGreen announces their acquisition of Skyline RV.

Late October 2014Lifestyle RV becomes first in the industry to use the ‘Sky-gazer window’, a full-view front windshield, in the new Element 30FLS.

Amy Checkley and Barb Holaway, founders of Resolution Run

For the second year, Resolution Run Founders Amy Checkley and Barb Holaway have organized this 5K run/walk and 1-mile fun walk with proceeds to benefit the Middlebury Food Pantry, and they couldn’t be more excited!

“Last year’s race was amazing!” says Amy. “Even though it was cold and a bit snowy, our racers showed up and had a good time. We had fantastic volunteers that helped the race run smoothly. Pam Bingaman [Director of the Middlebury Food Pantry] was giddy with an ear-to-ear smile. She asked us that day, ‘You’re going to do this again, right?’”

“The Food Pantry’s shelves are bare after the holidays,” says Barb, “and this event is a great reminder to give while enjoying a refreshing winter

day outside. We are hoping to get more runners, walkers, and sponsors this year to keep this event going strong!”

To get involved, go online at www.EpiphanyPromotions.org and you will find the link to register. You can also register in person one hour before the race begins, or find a flyer circulating at local Middlebury businesses and mail in the registration and waiver before December 19th. The top three male and female finishers in each age group will receive an award, and two new awards for Largest and Fastest Corporate/Family Group (10+ entries) will be given this year as well!

Congratulationsto the Northridge Raider football team on an

unprecedented season – the best in recent history!

NHS Photos on this page are provided by Russ Draper

With seven regular season wins, a sectional win against Bishop Dwenger, and a regional win against Norwell, we’re overjoyed to share in the excitement of our outstanding team, coaching staff, and everyone else who makes Raider Football what it is.

This magazine was sent to print prior to the Semi-State game on November 21st, so we’re unable to predict the future but, based on everything else they have accomplished this season, we're as proud as can be of our Northridge Raiders!

The empty bowls Supper was a culmination of several weeks’ worth of work at the school, during which time each student made a ceramic bowl in art class. REMEMBER when

1867 was a mere two years past the assassination of the beloved

president Abraham Lincoln. It’s also only two years post-Civil War. Andrew Johnson was president, and the United States purchased the territory of Alaska from Russia.

1867 was also the year a small band of God-fearing people built Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren beside the Little Elkhart River on County Road 8. The church thrived for 145 years as attendees from the Bonneyville and Middlebury areas married there, were baptized in the river behind the white rural church, and raised their families there.

On December 30, 2012, with only a dozen or more attendees, Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren held its last service. The church may have closed its doors, but its legacy continues to reach others far and wide, both in memory and in tangible ways.

reSiDeNtS reCallThis Gothic style church, similar to so many rural churches built during this time period, holds many memories for Middlebury residents and their families. One person is Darlene Mockler, who grew up in this church.

“I attended the church from the time I was born until the Sunday the church closed,” said Darlene. “My parents were very active there, as were my grandparents.

“Back then, we had fire pits in the back of the church where we would cook beef in large kettles for communion. I could see my grandpa cooking and stirring that beef for hours on end.” Darlene’s grandfather was Will Bowman.

Darlene played the piano and, when someone donated an organ, she played that as well “for so many years I can’t count,” she said.

Shirley Yoder recalls the trio she sang with: “Claudette Berkey was the pianist and played for our trio, who were Shirley Hire, Bonnie Roderick, and myself. The church ladies held a fundraiser each year of a cream chicken and biscuit supper. Folks came from far and wide. We also made homemade mincemeat and sold it for supplies for the kitchen.”

Larry Yoder remembers, “My parents started attending Pleasant Valley about 1960. Allen Weldy was the minister. I was baptized at Pleasant Valley, but not in the river. There was a large metal tub located under the pulpit and that’s where I was baptized... I also remember Reverend Bowman and Reverend Gordon.”

Darlene remembers the last service the church held. “So many people came back and shared stories. It was

a very touching day where people recalled a lot of great times and some sad times, too.”

What’S Next? While the church may be closed, its story continues to unfold.

Curtis Bontrager recently purchased the building and plans to renovate the church into his home on one side and an apartment on the other side.

Bontrager, who grew up in Middlebury, said he knows the history of Pleasant Valley Church and respects the building for what it once was.

“People have used this property for many years,” he said. “If people want access to the river behind the property, they’re welcome to continue using the parking lot as long as they are respectful to the property.”

Bontrager also wanted to show honor and respect toward the church’s rich heritage by making sure everything from the church could be put to good use and continue helping others.

His first thought was to list the pews on Craigslist, thinking maybe another church might find them. What he didn’t anticipate was his single act creating not just a snowball effect, but an avalanche of grace.

which to hold church, but they had no furniture and very little money to spend to prepare the sanctuary.

Marilyn “kept feeling this prompting to get on Craigslist,” an online buy and sell site. “I did, and there were church pews!” she said.

The Joneses and Bontrager connected this past October at Pleasant Valley, where the pastors were given not only those pews, but also the lectern, the church sign, the lights, the carpet, and other items.

Including the organ.

“Our church had nothing in terms of furniture or fixtures. Now we have everything to begin services,” said Marilyn.

Marilyn and her husband have a special message to the people who attended Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren: “Your legacy lives on. People will be changed in South Bend because of what your church continues to represent in generosity and grace.”

One might say the gift goes on.
