There is plenty to look forward to in2007. The Legal Services Bill, adecision on Deferral of Call, theimplementation of the Carterrecommendations are among the
known. No doubt there will be events andchallenges not yet anticipated. For me thechallenge and the privilege is to be the Treasurerof the Inner Temple for the year 2007.
Within the Inn we still have to sort out theuse and development of Serjeants’ Inn. We havea great heritage of space and accommodationwhich the Estates Committee and theSurveyor’s Department in particular strive tomaintain, protect and use to the best advantage.
Education and Training remain the othervital contribution which the Inn makes. I am inawe of the achievements of the staff of theEducation and Training Department, but thecloser I get to knowing what is going on, I amalso humbled and thankful for the contributionmade by voluntary effort and sparing of
carefully designed menus and welcomingatmosphere, continues to thrive.
The Education & Training Department hasa large portfolio of courses and schemes forour students, pupils and the practisingbarristers. Each year a considerable amount oftime and effort is invested to ensure that theseservices are of the highest quality. We have alarge number of volunteers to help (to whomwe are grateful) but with the increasing numberof events on offer, we always need more…Please do consider sparing your valuable timeand contact us if you think you might be ableto help.
As the Inn’s staff, we do all we can to
provide a first rate service for you, with thehope that you will make full use of your Inn and take advantage of all the benefits ofyour membership.

At last November’s Private Guest Night,the Inner Temple unveiled the latestaddition to its collection, a portrait inoil of The Rt Hon The Lord Woolf
who retired as Lord Chief Justice last year.Commissioned earlier this year, it is
painted by Andrew Tift, whose other subjectshave included Tony Benn and Glenys and Neil
Kinnock for the permanent collection of theHouse of Commons and who has subsequentlywon the first prize in this year’s BP PortraitPrize at the National Portrait Gallery for hisportrait of Lucian Freud’s first wife ‘Kitty’.
The portrait captures Lord Woolf, inrelaxed mode, his hands clasped reflectively, afamiliar pose, if not dress, to those whoappeared before him in Court.

INNER TEMPLEADMISSIONS DATA PROJECT
In a previous edition of Inner View(Trinity 2004), I reported that the Inn hadreceived a Heritage Lottery Fund grant toset up an online database of the InnerTemple’s past members (ITAD). I am
pleased to say that the HLF project has beensuccessfully completed and officially launched.To mark the occasion, a reception was heldearly last year. The Sub-Treasurer welcomedguests, who included representatives from theHeritage Lottery Fund, the National Archives,the Centre for Metropolitan History and theSociety of Genealogists, whilst Master Bakeroutlined the significance of the database forgenealogical, biographical, historical, statisticaland other research. It was only left to me toacknowledge the generosity of the HeritageLottery Fund, who awarded the Inn a grant ofnearly £50,000, and to thank all those involvedin the project, particularly the project archivist,Jane Branfield. Guests were then able to viewan exhibition of items from the Inn’s archivecollection on display in the Luncheon Roomand to witness the database in operation. It wasa good evening, enjoyed by those who attended.
The database, which has been compiled overthe past two years, forms part of the InnerTemple’s website. It may be accessed directly(www.innertemple.org.uk/archive/itad/index.asp) or via the HistoricalRecords page of the Inn’s website. It currentlyincludes members admitted between 1547 and1850 and, in addition to membership details, thesite provide interpretative material about legaleducation and the legal profession in the past aswell as guidance as to how to search thedatabase.
ITAD has opened up a wealth of informationabout Inner Templars admitted before 1850: not just those destined to be lawyers, such asSir Edward Coke and John Selden, but alsofuture politicians, courtiers, authors, scientistsand adventurers. These include Elizabeth I’s
favourites Lord Robert Dudley, Sir ChristopherHatton and the Earl of Essex, thecircumnavigator and adventurer, Sir FrancisDrake, and the author and biographer, JamesBoswell. Offering easy access to remote users,the database has already proved popular. Usagefigures are impressive (5,492 visits and 29,372hits from 1 December 2005 to 2 November2006) and feedback is excellent. Televisionprogrammes, such as BBC 1’s ‘Who do youthink you are?’, have raised the profile of familyhistory and other record-based research,encouraging members of the public to useonline and other primary sources in greaternumbers. There is an increasing demand foruser friendly research sites, such as ours. Inaddition to its value for members of the Inn,there is no doubt that the internet-baseddatabase is helping to promote a positive imageof the Inn to the outside world. Indeed, it is souseful that we have begun to extend it from1851 to about 1920. In the absence of additionalHLF money, the Inn plans to fund the databaseextension itself, taking in some of our mostfamous members: Mahatma Gandhi, JawaharlalNehru and W S Gilbert. Watch this space!

TRACEY DENNIS rejoined Inner Temple Library in November2006 as Deputy Librarian after being awayfrom the Inn for eight years. Since her employ-ment as an Assistant Librarian between 1994-1998, Tracey has worked at Lewis SilkinSolicitors as Head of the Library and ResearchCentre. Tracey will be writing a fuller accountof her experiences both inside and outside theInner Temple in the next edition of theLibrary’s electronic newsletter which will bedistributed in January 2007.

The Inns of Court have always hadstrong musical traditions. In the 16thand 17th Centuries their musicalentertainments were lavish and asignificant part of the cultural life of
the Inns. The Bar Musical Society was foundedin 1952, by Deborah Rowland, in order tofoster these traditions and to bring leadingmusicians of the time to the Inns. After morethan 50 years the Bar Musical Society continuesto exist as an important part of the cultural lifeof the Inns of Court. The Patron of the Societyfrom its foundation 1952, was Her MajestyQueen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Since herdeath in 2002, at the tender age of 101, theSociety has been very fortunate to have thecontinued support of its President, the Rt HonSir Anthony Evans, who succeeded the lateLord Taylor of Gosforth, himself a highlyaccomplished pianist, often heard at theSociety’s Members’ concerts.
In the past, with the assistance of ourFounder, the Society was able to engage theleading musicians of the day, including suchnames as Sir John Barbirolli, Sir ThomasBeecham, Artur Rubinstein, Yehudi Menuhin,Louis Kentner, Kiri te Kanawa. The ChelseaOpera Group, who had often appeared at theSociety’s concerts under their conductor Sir

Colin Davis, were most recently heard at theSociety’s 50th Anniversary concert in 2004.
In recent years, with the enormous amountof musical talent coming out of the musicschools, the Society has concentrated more onengaging today’s rising young musicians, oftenbefore they have become as well known as theyare now. A few examples are the BelceaQuartet (until recently resident string quartetat the Wigmore Hall), Kate Royal (2004 winnerof the Kathleen Ferrier Prize), Alice Neary(cello), and Ingrid Andsnes (Piano). Someconcerts have featured young musicianssupported by the Countess of Munster Trust.Our next concert, on 7 November 2007 at theGreat Hall of Lincoln’s Inn, will provide anopportunity to hear the rising young violinistThomas Gould, who is supported by the Trust.
From time to time the Society combineswith other organisations, such as the Anglo-Netherlands Society and Lawyers’ Music, topromote concerts in the Inns of Court. On 27 February 2007 we will again be joining withLawyers’ Music for a choral and orchestralBach concert in the Temple Church, at which itwill be possible for the Society’s Members toparticipate.
Today, in spite of increasing competition –from other musical events organised from timeto time in each of the four Inns as well as theabundance of events for which London isfamous – the Society continues to flourish,presenting three or four concerts each year. Inthe past, there was generally a concert in eachof the four Inns, one of which was often a

Members’ Concert, at which members of theSociety and their friends and families providedmusical entertainment of a very high quality.Participants in these concerts have included, inaddition to our President Peter Taylor,musicians such as Lord Justices Carnwath(violin/viola) and Lloyd (harpsichord), LordJustice Dyson and Judge Michael Harris (pianoduo), Harvey McGregor QC, Michel KallipetisQC, and Juliet Schiemann (soprano) andJennifer Johnston (soprano) who, having leftthe Bar in favour of a musical career, reachedthe finals of the 2006 Kathleen FerrierCompetition. It is hoped that it will be possibleto revive the Members’ Concerts as a regularpart of the Society’s calendar.
Other future concerts will be held on 4 July2007 (Gray’s Inn) and 6 November 2007(Lincoln’s Inn). At the first of these we areexpecting to be able to engage JenniferJohnston.
In order to continue the work of the BarMusical Society, of course it is essential toattract new members and in particular studentsand young barristers. Without new blood theSociety would gradually wither. Membership isopen to any member of an Inn of Court, and,in the Committee’s flexible discretion, to othershaving some association with one of the Inns.The annual subscription is £20, and £10 forstudents and barristers of under two years’Call. Concessions for concert tickets arenormally available to students and barristers ofunder five years’ Call. Anyone interested injoining the Society is invited to write to one ofthe following:

SERIOUS SEXUALOFFENCESSEMINARThe Inner Temple in conjunction with theCriminal Bar Association is organising a SeriousSexual Offences seminar to be held on Saturday10 March 2007 with optional specialisedadvocacy training on the morning of Sunday 11 March 2007. This seminar has beenaccredited by the CPS and also for 6 CPD hours(and an extra 3 CPD hours if you complete theadvocacy training). INNER TEMPLE IN MALAYSIA
An important and happy event for the Inn and our Malaysian memberstook place in Kuala Lumpur this September with the officiallaunch of the Malaysia Inner Temple
Alumni Association.After months of planning, the Association
came into being with a series of events attended by Master Butler-Sloss and the Sub-Treasurer, Patrick Maddams. A gala dinneron 15 September at the Royal Selangor Clubwas attended by more than 70 members andtheir spouses from all over Malaysia includingSabah and Sarawak. The British HighCommissioner Mr Wiliam Boyd McCleary and his wife Jeanette were guests of honouralong with the Director of the British CouncilMr Gerry Liston.
Sadly the Association’s Honorary President,Master Abdul Malek was unable to attend andthe guests were welcomed by its Vice PresidentJustice Dato James Foong Cheng Yuen.
Next day came the Association’s inauguralAGM where officers were formally elected, itsconstitution approved, membership fee set and aprogramme of events and activities for thecoming year established. The Association isformally registered with the Registrar ofSocieties, broadly similar to charitable status in UK.
This was followed by a legal lecture given byMaster Butler-Sloss on recent developments infamily law, and organised jointly with the Asean
Law Association of Malaysia (ALA). OurAssociation has already agreed that any InnerTemple member from any of the other countriesrepresented by the ALA can join the Association.Besides Malaysia, the ALA covers Brunei,Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore and Thailand.(www.aseanlawassociation.org)
Finally, Master Butler-Sloss andrepresentatives of the Association were receivedby the Chief Justice of Malaysia, the the Rt HonJustice Tun Dato’ Seri Ahmad Fairuz bin Dato’Sheikh Abdul Halim in the wonderfulsurroundings of the new Federal Court complexin Putrajaya and which included visits to itslibrary and museum displaying the constitutionaldevelopment and legal history of the Federation.
All these events received wide publicity in the Malaysian press which also stressed thatseveral eminent Malaysians are or have beenmembers of Inner Temple including he firstParamount Ruler of Independent Malaya, His Majesty Tunku Abdul Rahman ibni Al-Marhum Tuanku Muhammad, the first PrimeMinister of Independent Malaya, Tunku AbdulRahman Putra Al Haj ibni Al Marhum SultanAbdul Hamid Halim Shah and the first Malaysian to hold the post of Chief Justice, Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah.
