Term 4, Week 2

Proud member of the Bongil Bongil Community of Schools

Principal’s Report

Welcome to wellbeing week. Monday 11th – Friday

15th October is Wellbeing Week, as part of National

Mental Health Month. This is an opportunity for all of

us to focus on our own wellbeing, taking a little time

for yourself just to unwind and checking in with how

you are felling and where necessary asking for

support. It is also important for us to check in on

friends and family and see how they are feeling. All

staff members are also reconnecting with our students

and providing them with opportunities to ask

questions, share how they are feeling and, where

needed, provide some additional strategies.

Finally the rain is here. Over the past few dry

months we have been struggling to keep our gardens

alive. Fortunately the irrigation that the P&C put in last

year has kept them going. A few good days of rain will

give the grounds a good soaking and spring our

gardens and lawns back to life.

2022 enrolments are steadily building. In a 24 hour

period last week, we had 4 new students come for a

tour of the school - 3 Kindy students for next year and

a Year 2 boy. We welcome those families here to

Bonville. Our first Kindy orientation will take place on

28th October from 9:15 until 11:00am. If you know of

any families considering enrolling at our school,

please ask them to contact the school.

Our P&C will meet next week on Monday night.

This will be a zoom meeting at this stage. The

meeting will commence at 6pm on the 18th October. If

you would like to join please contact the school and

we will send you the meeting link.

Our school has been selected to receive an

LED lighting upgrade. The upgrade program

commits $157.8 million to replace inefficient light

with new LED lights, in up to 1000 public schools

across NSW over a two year period. This is

expected to reduce operating costs for schools

as well as creating over 1200 jobs in NSW.

The benefits of LED lighting include:

1. Improved learning outcomes in the classroom

as a result of improved lighting.

2. Energy saving – reduced electricity usage

and lower bills over the long term by replacing

inefficient fluorescent lights.

3. Lower maintenance and repair costs when

compared with fluorescent lights.

Our Bonville Public School – creating

respectful, responsible and resilient learners

in a safe, caring and inclusive environment.

Thank you for your continued support of Bonville

Public School.

What’s happening in our classrooms this term?

K/1N

This term K/1N will be consolidating our skills in all

areas as we prepare for year 1 and year 2. We have

the pleasure of Miss Bourke joining us for 8 weeks as

she fulfills her final teaching practicum. Small group

and independent reading tasks will continue the

development of skills in decoding, blending and

increasing vocab, whilst daily writing will be ongoing

for comprehension, creativity and expression. Our

integrated unit titled "Under the Ocean" will provide

many benefits for investigating, exploring, and

creating. The children will continue to be provided

with a range of outdoor learning experiences such as

buddies, gardening and gross motor. Our Friday's

buddy's session comprises of writing, where the

children are mentored and guided through their

writing task with the support of their buddy, coming

together to share their ideas as a whole group. We

are fortunate to have Miss Abby join us on Monday

afternoons for our structured dance session which

will be held in our outdoor learning area. Looking

forward to another productive and creative term.

1/2M

Throughout Term 4, 1/2M will continue to work

towards our reading, writing and spelling goals during

daily literacy groups. Reading will continue to be a

focus both at school and home. We will extend our

vocabulary and writing skills when learning to write

our own imaginative stories. During Maths lessons

we will continue to extend our mathematical thinking

and use of strategies through daily Number Talk

lessons. During science investigations we will

explore the concepts of light and sound. We will also

conduct experiments using a range of materials to

investigate their properties, how materials can be

combined, changed and used for different purposes.

Our history focus is on 'Past and Present Family Life'

where we will study similarities and

differences between students' daily lives and life

during their parents' and grandparents' childhoods,

including family traditions, leisure time, school life

and communications. We hope to finish off the year

improving our swimming skills and water confidence

as part of our 2 week swim program.

We look forward to another great

term learning together in 1/2M!

2/3B

This term in 2/3B our unit is based around Pirates.

We will be investigating the ships they sailed in as

well as famous pirates through history. Our artwork

will be pirate based, as will our writing, which will be

both factual and narrative. Our Maths this term will be

similar to last term ie Whole Number, Basic Maths

Operations, Number Patterns, Fractions and

Decimals and Problem Solving. We will also be

concentrating on basic multiplication facts and doing

research on Pirates and their ships for technology.

4/5H

It is a busy term ahead in 4/5H working hard to

achieve our learning goals. Miss Wilson from UNE

will be exploring a range of poetry during the first half

of the term while on her placement. In Science, we

are learning about ‘Earth And Space’ – exploring

planets, Earth and our Solar System. We will engage

in STEM robotics, and problem solving challenges

this term. Depending upon Covid restrictions, Year 4

will be enjoying 2 days at The Coffs Coast Adventure

Centre this term while Year 5 will be attending Lake

Ainsworth. Year 5 will be delivering their Captain

speeches this term. Hopefully all of Year 5 are in the

process of writing their letters to Mr Burkitt!

5/6G

This term 5/6G will be engaging in a variety of fun

and fantastic learning units! Students will be

exploring the unit "Third Rock from the

Sun". Students will investigate the solar system and

the Earth's place as part of a connected system. We

look forward to using our STEM Robotics kits and

learning to code using SCRATCH. In Mathematics

this term, we will be focusing on Fractions and

Decimals, Number and Algebra, Problem Solving and

Space and Geometry. 5/6G are all looking forward to

continuing our use of Google Classroom across all

Key Learning Areas. We will further develop our skills

when using digital technology to gather information,

combine text, image and graphic to demonstrate our

learning. We are all excited to build on our narrative

story writing skills, creating a "Choose your own

adventure story" using the ‘Seven Steps to Writing

Success’ program and continuing to work towards

achieving our individual literacy and numeracy goals.
